Early in May of 2020, Albuquerque resident Jose Nuñez Romaniz was headed to the bank to deposit some money so he could buy some socks online for his grandfather. Jose came upon a large clear plastic bag filled with cash next to the A.T.M. machine. Romaniz called Albuquerque Police Department to come investigate the bag of money he found. The money was unmarked that he could tell and was left in plain sight on the side of an ATM machine. It was apparently left by a Wells Fargo contractor who was supposed to put the money in the ATM. Police took custody of the cash totaling $135,000. Romaniz was given a plaque, gift cards, sports gear and even a $500 scholarship from a local electric company at a formal ceremony with City of Albuquerque and local business leaders. Romaniz has a desire to become a police officer one day and did the right thing.
