On September 3, 2023, Evanston police officers observed a Mercury Sable parked on the south side of Davis Street facing westbound perpendicular across three angled parking spots. The front driver door was open and upon approaching the vehicle, the officers observed the 28 year-old female driver leaning over the center console asleep with the keys to the vehicle on the front passenger seat. The officers knocked on the door to wake up the driver, who slurred and mumbled making it hard to understand her. Feeling that it was not safe for her to drive, the officers asked the driver to complete standardized field sobriety exercises. The driver was also offered the opportunity to complete a preliminary breath test (PBT), but she was unable to provide an adequate amount of breath, despite three attempts. She was arrested for DUI and transported to the Evanston police station. She also attempted an evidentiary breath test (EBT), but also failed to provide a sufficient breath sample. She was then issued a citation for DUI.
