Reyno La Cock attempted to conduct a traffic stop when Austin Desylva, 28, made a U-turn to evade the officer. A pursuit ensued through downtown Canmore and into a residential area. During the chase, Desylva fired two shots at the officer, one hitting his police vehicle and another striking a nearby home. The officer then cornered Desylva at the end of a cul-de-sac and fired 25 shots. Desylva, who was hit in the face and neck, then fled on foot before being found and taken to the hospital. A subsequent search of his car led to the seizure of cocaine, cash, and a weight scale. Desylva has since pleaded guilty to firearms, drug, and driving offences and was sentenced to 7½ years in prison. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) investigated the incident and fully cleared the RCMP officer of any wrongdoing.
