-Tucson, AZ. -June 21, 2023. According to a report, a police officer shot at a suicidal man who charged at him armed with kitchen shears in Tucson. The bullet missed 35-year-old Nathaniel McKowen, but a different officer fired his Taser, and McKowen was taken into custody. The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team issued its report on the shooting on Friday, June 30. The incident happened near East Blacklidge Drive and North Richey Boulevard late on June 21. Officers went to the area after witnesses called 911 and said McKowen was threatening to hurt himself. He was also allegedly trying to break into a home. PRCIT said McKowen “had previously made suicidal statements in the days leading up to this incident. “ Officers found McKowen in a parking area outside a home and he was holding the shears on his wrist. PRCIT said officers tried to talk to McKowen and told him to drop the weapon several times. McKowen refused so an officer used a less-than-lethal weapon but McKowen continued to walk down the street. McKowen then began to run, still ignoring the officers’ commands. PRCIT said McKowen then turned around and charged at officers. That is when both officers fired their weapons. PRCIT said the officer who fired his handgun is Anthony Biondo, a one-year veteran of the TPD.
