A mother tells detectives that her 3-year-old son accidentally shot his 2-year-old sister. But as investigators press for answers, her story begins to change — again and again. On July 21, 2020, Milwaukee police responded to a home after 2-year-old Zymeiia Stevens suffered a fatal gunshot wound. Her mother, Jasmine Daniels, was taken into custody and questioned about exactly what happened inside the house. What followed were three custodial interviews and several conflicting explanations. Daniels initially told investigators that her young son had fired the gun. Hours later, she gave detectives a different account involving an unknown man who entered the basement, handled the firearm, and fled after it discharged. She later described another version involving a man dressed in black. But surveillance footage raised serious problems with those explanations. Then, during her third interview, Daniels gave investigators another account — this time saying she had been handling the gun herself when it discharged. In this episode of Evidence Lab Interrogation, we examine the Jasmine Daniels police interrogation, the contradictions detectives confronted, the evidence that challenged her changing stories, and the investigative techniques used to determine what happened to Zymeiia Stevens. Daniels was ultimately charged with first-degree reckless homicide. After unsuccessfully seeking to suppress her custodial statements, she pleaded guilty to an amended charge of neglecting a child where the consequence was death. Importantly, no court found that her 3-year-old son fired the fatal shot.
