A San Diego police officer shot and critically wounded a 60-year-old man Wednesday afternoon in the garage of a San Carlos home after the man’s parents reported he was suicidal and threatening them with a gun, police said. Officers were called around 4:10 p.m. to the home on Bonnie View Drive between Murray Park and Wandermere drives, according to Officer Darius Jamsetjee. The street is near Green Elementary School and Lake Murray Community Park. The man’s 91-year-old father told police his son was “acting suicidal” and threatening him and his 89-year-old wife “with a loaded firearm,” San Diego police homicide Capt. Richard Freedman said during a news briefing Wednesday night near the scene. Several police officers, including at least one with a dog, responded to the neighborhood and planned out their approach to the home, Freedman said. When they moved closer, they spotted the man inside an open garage. “He had a firearm in his hand,” Freedman said. “He presented that firearm at the officers.” Investigators later learned the weapon was a BB gun, police said Thursday. One of the officers fired at the man, striking him at least once, Freedman said. Paramedics took the man to a hospital, where he was in critical condition as of 8 p.m. Police did not release the man’s name but said he lived at the home with his parents. Freedman said the man did not open fire on officers, but they did recover the pellet gun in the garage. Police did not provide any other details about the shooting. Homicide detectives are investigating, as they do for all shootings involving law enforcement in San Diego.
