On April 22, 2022, Officer James Perz, while on an extra duty assignment, was alerted by a school staff member about a potentially impaired teacher, prompting him to locate a silver 2015 Hyundai driving erratically towards a landscaping trailer and initiate a traffic stop. The driver, identified as Lauren Brunetto, claimed to be having a panic attack, but Officer Perz observed clear indicators of impairment, necessitating a call for backup, with Officers Miller and Styles subsequently taking over the DUI investigation; despite initial refusal, the driver eventually complied with requests to exit the vehicle and perform field sobriety exercises, ultimately failing the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, Walk and Turn (improper turning, incorrect steps), and One Leg Stand (failed to raise foot properly, put foot down early) tests. Following her inability to perform the exercises adequately, along with the discovery of six bottles of vodka during a vehicle search incident to arrest, the driver was placed under arrest for driving under the influence, admitting a prior DUI arrest and later agreeing to provide breath samples at the police department.
