Please like, comment, and SHARE! 🙏 🔍 Episode Overview: At about 8:55 PM on August 9, 2022, Evesham Township Patrolman Thomas Anderson was called to a crash on Taunton Lake Road. He arrived around 9:00 PM and found a 2018 Nissan Rogue wedged against guardrails on both sides of the road. It blocked the bridge near 199 Taunton Lake Road. Patrolwoman Danielle Torres went to the driver, who was being examined by first responders. She was identified as Marie Mendez. Marie declined further medical care. Anderson spoke with two witnesses, who said she had been driving too close behind their car. They had seen the crash and noticed a wine bottle inside her vehicle. The smell of alcohol and the witnesses' statements led officers to begin a DWI investigation. Marie said she had just left her mother's home and denied drinking. Officers asked her to perform field sobriety tests. Sergeant Robert Hansbury started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. He saw that Marie's eyes did not move smoothly. Both eyes showed clear, steady shaking when turned to the side, beginning before they reached a 45-degree angle. Anderson then gave her the Walk and Turn test. She failed to touch heel to toe, keep her arms at her sides, and take the correct number of steps. During the One Leg Stand test, she could not raise her foot properly and had trouble keeping her balance. After the crash, Marie faced a DWI investigation. Officers noted the strong smell of alcohol, and a witness had reported seeing a wine bottle in her car. She also struggled with the sobriety tests and was arrested for driving while intoxicated. Anderson brought her to the Evesham Township Police Department for processing. Her car was towed and held for 12 hours under John's Law. At the station, Torres read Marie the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators. Marie agreed to give breath samples. The Alcotest recorded a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.19%, more than twice New Jersey's legal limit of 0.08%. After processing, she was released to a sober adult, who signed the Potential Liability Warning form. Anderson issued summonses for driving under the influence, careless driving, marked-lane violations, and having an open container. Marie was arrested for DWI in Evesham Township, New Jersey, on November 26, 2022. On March 16, 2023, she was found guilty of careless driving and lost her license for 90 days. A plea deal led to the dismissal of her other three citations. That same day, she was also convicted of the DWI from November 26, 2022. The remaining traffic charges from that incident, including marked-lane violations and reckless driving, were dismissed under the same agreement. Marie was ordered to pay $1,130 in fines.
