Around 5:11 PM on April 27, 2022, Officer Sarah Wexel with the Athens-Clarke County Police responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident on South Milledge Avenue near the intersection with Henderson Avenue. The accident involved a two-vehicle collision between a 2012 Ford Focus and a pickup truck. Officer Wexel arrived on scene and made contact with the 27-year-old woman who was driving the Ford Focus which had struck the pickup truck from behind. The woman was identified as Arianna. As she was speaking with Arianna, she detected indicators of impairment. Arianna told Officer Wexel that she was coming from The Local 706, a popular bar in Athens, Georgia, but denied consuming any alcohol before operating a motor vehicle. The other driver informed the officer that he was stopped at a crosswalk to yield to a pedestrian as he was struck from behind by the driver of the Ford Focus. A few minutes later, Officer Haydn Asinas arrived on scene and took over the investigation. Arianna admitted to Officer Asinas that she had probably consumed 2 cocktails before operating a motor vehicle, and also admitted to smoking a prohibited substance. Based on his suspicion of impairment, Officer Asinas asked Arianna to walk over to the sidewalk and perform field sobriety exercises. Officer Asinas started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test, and he observed the lack of smooth pursuit, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation, and the onset of nystagmus prior to 45 degrees. He also observed a vertical gaze nystagmus. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test. During the Walk and Turn test, Arianna did not touch heel-to-toe on each step and took an incorrect number of steps. The third exercise was the One Leg Stand test, and Arianna failed to raise her foot in the proper fashion while using her arms for balance. The fourth exercise was the Lack of Convergence test, and Officer Asinas observed a lack of convergence. The final exercise was the Modified Romberg Balance test, and Arianna estimated the passage of 30 seconds over 56 seconds. Based on the motor vehicle accident, the odor of alcohol, her admission to consuming alcohol and another substance, and her inability to adequately perform the field sobriety exercises, Arianna was placed under arrest for DUI. After Arianna was placed under arrest, Officer Asinas read her the Georgia Implied Consent Notice, and she eventually agreed to submit blood samples. Officer Asinas transported Arianna to Piedmont Area Regional Medical Center (PARMC), where her blood was drawn. After the blood draw, Officer Asinas transported her to the Clarke-County Jail for further processing. Arianna was issued the following summonses and eventually released on a $4,050 bond: DUI – Multiple Substances – Less Safe (40-6-391(a)(4)), Reckless Driving (40-6-390), and Following too Closely (40-6-49) ----------------------------------------------- Please LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, and consider supporting our channel (email us for more information).
