The shooting happened late Thursday night on the corner of Highland Avenue and Benton Street. Both officers were wounded and the suspect was killed. Police officers showed social media video of the suspect displaying a magazine for his gun. There were multiple videos on Dustin Saffell’s Facebook page showing him holding the magazine and wearing a full-face ski mask. Thursday night when Saffell fired at officers, police say he had a magazine the length of a small club. The body cam video shows the moments before 32-year-old Dustin Saffell fires shots at two Benton Harbor police officers. Sergeant Reginald Gee is the officer wearing the body camera. He recognized one of the cars Saffell was allegedly last spotted in. Benton Harbor director of public safety Daniel McGinnis says Saffell was on the run from local and state police. “There were outstanding warrants for the arrest of a felony warrant for home invasion first degree unlawful imprisonment of our department. As well as a resisting arrest” said Daniel McGinnis, City of Benton Harbor Public Safety Director. He also had a note in his file for police to approach him with caution. Saffell allegedly hit Sgt Gee twice and another officer, Sgt Blake Kinzler three times. Kinzler came to Gee’s aid after he was shot. “One in the abdomen was stopped by his vest. Other one was through his left leg. He was taken to Lakeland where he had received surgery and he is in stable condition and doing well.,” said McGinnis. Sgt Kinzler’s wounds were superficial, he was treated and released. “Responding officers to apply a tourniquet to insurgencies late which was a great lifesaving mechanism because he was bleeding,” McGinnis. McGinnis says Saffell fired at least 15 rounds at the police officers. It’s unknown how many times Sgt. Gee fired at Saffell or what Saffell was doing at the house. “We aren't just one sure why he decided after all the time he's ran and fled and kind of made a game of it and decided to shoot it out this time,” said McGinnis. Michigan State Police are taking over the investigation.
