In the early hours of May 8, 2023, a sergeant initiated a traffic stop after observing a vehicle driving without headlights and exhibiting erratic patterns. Upon making contact with the 25-year-old female driver, she appeared incoherent, and a strong odor of alcohol was detected, raising immediate suspicion of impairment. To assess her condition, the officer administered a series of field sobriety exercises. The driver struggled significantly, failing the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test, exhibiting poor balance during the One Leg Stand by starting prematurely and swaying, and failing to walk heel-to-toe in the Walk and Turn test. Most notably, she sang the alphabet when instructed to recite it. Based on these observed failures, her erratic driving, and inconsistent statements, she was placed under arrest for driving under the influence. Following her arrest, she was transported to the Hunterdon County Sheriff’s Department, where Alcotest results confirmed a blood alcohol content of 0.16%, double the legal limit.
