It was just a regular traffic stop and then the next thing I hear he's resisting and then shots fired. I'm going TO THE HOSPITAL. >> THE SUSPECT WAS IDENTIFIED AS 37-year-old Jonathan Beeson. At the time of the incident, which took place on October 14th, 2024, [music] Beeson had warrants for alleged drug trafficking and assault on a peace officer, leading to the officer's attempt at taking him into custody. In response, Beeson opened fire on Callaway County Sheriff's Department Corporal Justin Backs and Deputy Gardner Pottorff, resulting in one gunshot wound to the corporal's arm and four to the deputy's stomach. Beeson, while surviving for nearly 30 minutes after suffering a gunshot wound to his head, according [music] to Sergeant Carhoff, was pronounced dead at the scene. Both Corporal Backs and Deputy Pottorff were transported to University Hospital and medically treated. They both fortunately survived, but not without a long and arduous recovery. While Corporal Backs was released from the hospital 2 days after the incident, Deputy Pottorff remained hospitalized in the ICU for 2 weeks following the incident. A Facebook post from the Callaway County Sheriff's Office notes that during his hospitalization, Deputy Pottorff took his first steps for physical therapy by getting wheeled outside for fresh air. In response to the incident, Boone County Special Prosecutor Roger Johnson reviewed the body [music] cam footage to determine the legality of the use of force by the officers. The prosecutor commented, "There is no question that Beeson fired first." and subsequently determined that the officers acted lawfully and in defense of self and others. Both [music] Corporal Backs and Deputy Pottorff have since returned to duty after months of physical therapy and intense recovery. Donation links for both Corporal Bax and Deputy Potteroff are listed in the description below if you would like to donate in support of their recoveries.
