At some point, the original 911 caller, Ashley Deardorff, left the house. Then, at 6:55 a.m., a child inside the residence called 911 to report that the shooter was deceased. Officers were able to safely clear the house several hours later with armored vehicles, drones, and robotics on scene at the time. A month later, Ashley Deardorff, the shooter's wife and original 911 caller, was federally indicted on charges of conspiracy, straw purchasing, and making false statements while purchasing a firearm. The allegations [music] stem from her husband's 2007 conviction for second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, where he assaulted his cousin and pulled a knife on him. After his conviction, Gooden's gun rights were revoked and he was prohibited from owning firearms. In 2020, Gooden attempted to restore his gun rights, arguing that he needed to protect his family. [music] However, the court denied his petition due to his assault conviction as well as two previous allegations of assault by a previous girlfriend and Deardall herself. During her court proceedings, US attorneys argued that Deardall illegally purchased five [music] firearms for Gooden, two of which were used in the deadly 2024 shooting. One of the weapons, a semi-automatic rifle, was equipped with a binary trigger, allowing the gun to fire once when the trigger is squeezed and again when it's released, effectively [music] doubling the rate of fire. He was also equipped with hundreds of rounds of ammunition purchased by Deardall. Text messages recovered from Gooden's phone showed that she knowingly violated federal law, and on January 14th, 2025, she pleaded guilty to two counts of straw purchasing. She was sentenced to 45 months for each count, set to run concurrently, and will be on supervised release for two years. [music] As of the time of publication, she is lodged at a medium-security prison in Greenville, Illinois, with an expected release date of September 2028. According to a post on social media, her seven kids are staying with extended family members. Tragically, officers Paul Elmstrand and Matthew Ruegg, [music] along with firefighter paramedic Adam Finnseth, all passed away. We've added links to their available GoFundMe [music] pages in the description below. The loss of three first responders left the entire state in mourning and resulted in more than 10,000 people attending the memorial service in person. In the days after the tragedy, fellow officers and first responders met to grieve over the loss of their friends. >> I was standing next to him on his last call, and now it was me that was looking to him for the answer. I believed in him as a crisis negotiator. And everyone here should know he was doing an amazing job of it. >> And it is unacceptable that Matt did not go home that morning. The loss that his family and friends feel is unbearable. And at the same time, it is also true that Rougie left us with remarkable gifts. For example, I noticed that I'm saying I love you a lot this last week and a half, and I'm hearing I love you a lot, too. >> Almstrand, Rougie, Finseth. We were there for seven children. Nothing could be more honorable. >> [music] >> All units, Officer Matthew Rougie, badge 45-183, Officer Paul Almstrand, badge 45-176, and Firefighter Adam Finseth, badge number 83, have answered their final call. May you forever rest in peace.
