He is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. This next case shows yet another suspect fleeing from police resulting in a crash. [music] Except this time the officer pursuing gets involved in the crash as well. >> 757 F1 fleeing from me eastbound Dean Street. I was trying to fight my airbag to get out of the car. 10-4. Are you all right, honey? Yeah, I'm good. I couldn't stop cuz of the wet pavement. >> Yeah. Yeah. And I slowed down for him and then I saw the crash. I'm like I tried my I tried my damn just to stop. So I don't know which I don't know which car I hit. I think I hit this one. 757 I'm going to need a tow for my squad. Sure you don't need anything? Yeah. Yeah, I'm just pissed off. I couldn't stop cuz of the pavement. What is he wearing? I have no idea. I I couldn't get out of the car because of the airbag. All right. Over the course of the next 4 hours police are able to track the suspect down to a gas station where he's currently hiding in the bathroom. With the help of a K9 unit officers attempt to apprehend the suspect. COME OUT. COME OUT. COME OUT. COME OUT. COME OUT. PUT YOUR HANDS UP. COME OUT. YEAH, NICE AND SLOW GET YOUR HANDS UP. WE HEAR YOU. NICE AND SLOW WE NEED TO SEE YOUR HANDS. ALL RIGHT. COME OUT. YEAH, HE'S GOT IT. HANDS UP. HANDS. GET YOUR HANDS ON THE GROUND NOW. TURN AROUND. WALK BACK. TURN AROUND. HEY, I'm going to Hey, somebody go around to the other side. GOT HIM. ON THE GROUND. ON YOUR KNEES. WALK BACK. KNEES. KNEES. KNEES. I GOT I CAN'T HANDS BEHIND YOUR BACK. GOT HIM. I GOT HIM. HOLD HIM HERE. SPREAD YOUR FEET. THIS SUSPECT, QUINELL, was charged with two counts of aggravated fleeing exceeding 21 miles an hour over the speed limit, aggravated fleeing causing over $300 in property damage, three counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding disobeying two or more traffic devices, speeding 35 or more miles an hour over the speed limit, two counts of leaving the scene of a crash, disobeying traffic control signals, failure to signal when turning, failure to signal when changing lanes, and improper lane usage. He pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated fleeing and eluding disobeying two or more traffic devices, and no contest to the rest of the charges. He was sentenced to 30 months in prison with 126 days of credit. He was ordered to serve at [music] least 50% of that sentence before being placed on mandatory supervised release for 6 months. He was also ordered to pay $1,081 in court costs and $12,755.60 in restitution. You know what stands out in both of these? It's not the speed, and it's not the crash. It's how fast things fall apart when someone already knows they shouldn't even be behind the wheel. That first pursuit was over 100 mph, cutting through traffic, and those stop sticks, that's precision. That's an officer stepping in and taking control back before it got worse. But here's where it gets real, because according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, there are tens of thousands of police pursuits every year, and most of those pursuits, they start with something small, like a traffic stop. So when we see somebody take off like that, we're not watching a one-time bad decision. We're watching a pattern play out. Now let's go to that second clip. Crashing a parked car, its airbags deployed, and that officer is stuck in that vehicle for a moment, and that's a dangerous place to be. Because if that suspect had turned that aggression towards the officer instead of running, that's a completely different outcome. Now instead, we got 4 hours later, K9 tracking, and he ends up hiding in a bathroom. And after a while, this kind of behavior stops being random, and it becomes familiar. So when someone runs like that, do you think they're reacting in the moment, or following a pattern they've already been living?
