HE'S in a car garage. The suspect, Charles, was taken into custody a second time and promptly transported to jail. He was charged with criminal damage to property, secondderee [music] recklessly endangering safety, fleeing, eluding, escape, felony bail jumping, driving a vehicle without consent, and resisting obstructing, with six of those charges being enhanced with a habitual criminality repeater modifier. Charles plead guilty to criminal damage to property, secondderee recklessly endangering safety, and fleeing eluding with the rest of the charges being dismissed. He was ultimately sentenced to three years in the Wisconsin state prison system and 2 years of extended supervision. Control isn't lost in a fight. It's lost in one brief moment. And that moment normally doesn't look dramatic. It's the smallest motions. A hand on a door, a glance at the radio, just a half a second delay. That's all it takes because control doesn't get taken at least. And fear does not wait for permission. Handcuffs never calm people down. They make them feel cornered. And a corner person isn't thinking about charges or tomorrow. They just want air and freedom. That's exactly why cops keep their hands free. Because once attention splits between two things, control does have a clock on it. The crazy part is a cuffed suspect running around doesn't reset anything. It forces officers to abandon containment and switch to recovery, which means wider searches, more force options, and fewer chances to slow it back down. Custody is where professionalism gets tested the hardest. Not by violence, but by routine fatigue, and by thinking this part is easy. Danger doesn't announce itself anymore. It waits for comfort. And the second comfort creeps in, control is gone. And what felt safe a moment ago suddenly isn't. Always remember handcuffs don't stop fear. It traps it. And trap fear doesn't negotiate.
