One afternoon, an officer was dispatched to a grocery store after an off-duty colleague working security reported detaining a woman he had caught shoplifting. Is all this from Giant Eagle? What's What's from Giant Eagle? Why were you throwing the other? What about all this? This is from Giant Eagle. Jesus a Katie pull this open. Hey uh door date of birth 112 90 Katie Jones. Hey. Yeah. Obviously got stuff mixed in everywhere. Okay. So I'll get it for you. Okay. Is that her? I don't know yet. They're looking. You understand? If we don't identify, you're going to be going to jail, right? So, make sure it's good, right? Good info. You're w you don't know yourself. What do you say? With who? All my friends. All your friends. Yeah. What do you got on underneath the uh the coat? Ready? What's your middle initial? M. Radio 6791. Her middle initial is M as in Mary. Let's step inside out of the cold. He's got to put out the cigarette. Right here is fine. Hey. Hey. Hey. Stop. You're going to be tased. You will be tased. Stop. Ready. Starting up for pursuit headed towards Main Street. Katie, I'mma tase you. Stop. You want tased, Katie? You are going to be tased. Stop. Come on. Stop being a idiot. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. You guys can slow down. I got her. Stop. Come on. Stop. Katie, what is your problem? Katie, seriously, I was going to tase her, but I appreciate that. Didn't feel like Yeah. You're not going to get I didn't tase you cuz I didn't want to hurt you. All right. He's going to double off for you. Okay. This is bad time. Yeah. Check you out. You just got women. Well, see, Carl gets here. Katie, what do you got on you that you're scared? Go to the bathroom. That's the problem. He hasn't on yet. I know. You got on you right now? No, I know. You mean check me? I don't shake my bra. I don't get Well, she's going to say my hand. She's got it. If I let go, are you going to run with handcuffs on? You're good. Tried to walk her in here so she'd be warm. Chase all that way. You think you're going to outrun me? Like, what was the deal? Stop looking around. Don't even think about it. Drive me crazy. You don't think that I understand what preflight indicators are? What do you got on you? No, you're lying. You're lying. I'm not lying. My partner's going to search you. Okay. And your honesty goes a little ways right now. Huh? Which one? Where are the doors? Other than all, those pens. Where are those pens from? Where? Michael's. Okay. She's still doing the I'm nervous. My nerves are Did I start on you fast? Well, I was like I don't know what she's doing. So, I kind of let her get a couple feet away from me and I realized what she's doing and she just said when I tried to stop her, she kept walking. Did you try to stop her? Yeah. Yeah. The car and that lady Katie ducked. She got moves. You're not very quick though. How old are you, kid? Again? 32. How old? 32. Okay. So, that is again 90. You got it already. No. Sounds about right. Are you not from Ohio? You are. We're not getting information back on that what you gave us. So, you already got theft. There's just going to be a theft site and you're going to walk. Yeah. Okay. I told you that. Now, you got fleeing resisting arrest. Okay. If you continue to lie to us and not tell us who you are, we're going to have to fingerprint you and sit on you and send it to the FBI and wait till we hear back from them, find out who you are. That's going to be another charge. I heard. Okay. So, just stop the BS and just tell us who you are. You got warrants. You're already you're here. You're not going to go anywhere no matter what. So, just Ashley Jones. Thank you. Ashley Jones. Yeah. Spelled A S H L E Y. What are you reaching for? I was trying to move like it's an infected thumb the probably won't take me what's that infected infected last Have you recently been pregnant or are you pregnant right now? No. Got a bunch of warrants. Huh? She got a bunch of warrants. She does have warrants. Oh, she didn't think she had anything. They said clear. Basically, they didn't scroll down far enough. Oh, all right. So, do a preliminary here and then go back and do um search. Yeah, we're going to do it back at this station. So, private not you pick up an extra felony on top of all those other guys. I'm already going to note in my report that you after talking to you, you were cooperative and you let us know your identity. So that will be in my report. I'm going to word it just like that that you were cooperative. Okay? It goes a little way to the judge when they read that stuff. Okay? If we have to go through all this song and dance and find more stuff, it's going to negate everything. I can tell by your eyes if you tell and the fact that you said you're on your period and you needed to go to the bathroom. No, I don't. We're I mean, we're going to get real close and personal, but we're not going to do it right here at So, I'm going to do a quick search and then we're going to go back to the station. I'm going to go ahead and ran out right now up until this point. Ashley, not Katie, you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against your court of law. You have the right to talk to a lawyer or have him or her present with you while you're being questioned. If you cannot afford to hire a lawyer, will be appointed to represent you before question if you wish. You can decide anytime to exercise these rights and so um yeah, it has a weird weight to it and I felt everywhere. It's just I don't have anything that's going to hold her. Yeah. Um and she she has cigarettes. I watched her pick one up. There we go. What you got? Nothing sticky cuz I'm really I mean you seem like a nice girl. I'm really not going to be happy though. [Music] What was it? Miscellaneous groceries. This This is Michael's. This is Ali's. This can be hers. This is obviously stolen. Probably Burlington. But so I'm thinking these two. Give them back to stores if they want. But that's up to you. Hey everyone, it's Trent, prior deputy sheriff patrol sergeant and canine handler. So in my opinion, it was probably a good idea that this officer did not use this taser on this woman like he threatened to do because in my opinion, it did not qualify. She wasn't actively resisting. She wasn't fighting him. She was running away from a crime that ultimately was just a citable, meaning that she would be issued a citation misdemeanor, which is a low-level crime. Now, could he have been justified in using the taser if other elements were met based on her criminal history, the crime she had just committed? If she has a history of fighting with law enforcement, if they thought that she had some weapon on her and she had just used it. Yes, of course. So, there are things that you that would allow him to do that. However, you have to be able to articulate that fact. And he was probably just using it as a threat because sometimes cops will do that. We'll say, "We're going to use the taser on you or deploy the K-9 just to gain compliance because sometimes people will hear those words and they will automatically stop and then go ahead and go with the program." Either way, he definitely made the right call in this scenario. And then in terms of everything she stole, I think the total dollar amount was somewhere around $863. And and in the state of Ohio, the threshold that you have to meet to turn a shoplifting into a felony, the dollar amount for that is going to be $1,000. So you have to steal more than $1,000 worth of items for it to turn into a felony, which is a higher level offense. So this woman stealing $863 worth of merchandise seems like a lot, and it definitely is. However, it was just going to be a citation, and they were going to give her a court date, and she was going to be released. And a lot of states have started to implement that just because the court system was so overcrowded with shoplifterss due to the fact that it is just rampant in most areas right now. Similar to defenses as well. And I'm not saying I agree with that. I'm just stating that that is going to be one of the main reasons why that exists. And then as that older cop stated at the very end, you have to contact each of those individual retail stores where all of these items came from to see if they even want to be a victim. And if they say, "No, we don't. we just want our stuff back, then she actually wouldn't be charged with that. Only when a store wants to be a victim and since it is a misdemeanor, they are going to have to be the ones to press charges. And that's why they have to fill out a form. Generally speaking, it's going to be some sort of citizen's arrest situation. But because she wanted to lie about her identity, and obviously that was because she had multiple warrants for her arrest, then she caught additional charges. And then what's also indicated in this officer's report is they located suspected methamphetamine. I believe in one of her bags. And that's very common. People will steal a bunch of items from stores just like this woman did and sell them in order to continue their drug habit. But that is going to be it for this one. See you guys in the next one. She was charged with shoplifting and resisting arrest. [Music]
