You got the attitude, the disrespect, the whole show. Then the relatives show up and suddenly it's a concert. Nobody's listening and everybody's performing. And she had that look in her eye like she was about to go crazy. A veteran officer once told me, "Always keep calm with everyone. But when it's family, it can explode quick, especially when someone has to get arrested, so be prepared." And he wasn't wrong. You could feel the shift. The moment the bat stops being seen as authority and starts being seen as a threat, that's when you know things can go bad fast. And the law doesn't care who you related to, mom, sister, cousin, whatever. Once you step in and block an officer, you're part of the arrest. Now, I've seen moms end up in cuffs next to their sons. And I've seen daughters crying from the back seat while their boyfriend screaming outside the car. So, when the lights hit and the bad steps out of the car, it's not your time to play protector. It's your time to be smart. Because when the night's over and the dust settles, the only question that matters is why you were part of the problem or the reason it didn't get worse.
