This begins as a call for medical [music] assistance from the suspect, but soon multiple deputies are chasing him after he steals a deputy squad [music] car. And as the pursuit unfolds, he refuses to stop, turning a simple call into complete [music] chaos. >> Get your feet on that car. Get your feet on that car. >> It's around 6:15 p.m. [music] on October 26th, 2024, when these Marion County deputies respond to an individual requesting assistance after drug use in an area of Ocala, Florida. But there's something about his criminal history they don't know yet. Something they are about to discover in the worst possible way. >> What's going on, sir? Are you the one that's been calling us? >> Yeah, well, actually, he was calling. He he he had he wanted to he asked he used my phone. >> Okay. >> And uh I just landed and I saw him uh cross country and through my field. >> Okay, who is this person? >> I I I know he's a drug addict, I think. >> live on this property or not? >> No. No. No. >> know where he's at right now? >> Yes, he's right there. I I just pointed to that's his head. He's He's 50 yards You can see him moving a little bit right there. He's not making sense, but he he thinks people are coming to kill him. >> Uh what >> He's I don't think he's got any weapons and he's very polite, but but really out of control, you know. I mean, not out of control, but out of his mind, you know, a little bit. He He's too tired to run, I think. >> What if this is our original RP because I don't see anyone especially not 50 yards in front of us is like in front of where that little tall grass stalk is there. I'm not seeing crap. And the lady who just called is Shirley, so I don't know if you want to go up and try to make contact with one of these residences. >> There is another person here. >> You hear somebody else? >> Yes. >> I don't see crap. >> Unless he's using a deeper voice. >> I hear a deeper voice. >> see anything over there. Worst Worst we can do is walk out there and see if we see anything. >> Worst case scenario, we drive out there. >> I mean, he's claiming he's just past where he is, then we can walk out there and see if we see anything. Unless he's flicker or something. I don't know if that's a person or what. If you want to stay put, we'll I just don't want him to jump up and get squirrely and then you're caught up in the middle of something. Okay. >> He had a chance. He had a chance to do anything. What he says is bigger than me. >> But uh >> He's He's really just laying flat in the grass. All right, if you want to stay We'll go up there. I don't want him to jump up and after you or anything. Hello, Sheriff's Office. What's going on? >> I'm having a really bad day. >> Okay. >> You have my uh record, police record? >> I I got nothing, sir. All we got was a phone call saying you were at the cemetery, which didn't wasn't the case. >> The person needing assistance is 41-year-old James Brady. But now, as deputies try to understand exactly what he is going through, James begins giving them a series of strange answers. >> Would you call in dispatch or have one more cop come out, please? >> Dispatch called me here. What What is it you need? >> I don't trust anybody anymore. >> Okay. Well, you called us, so you must need us for something. >> I've had bad experiences. >> So So, what is it going on? What is it you called us out here for? >> Uh Well, I'll tell them now. I don't know. What did dispatch say? >> They told us that you called, said people were after you, you were in the trees, and then a second call came in, you said you were at the cemetery. That That's all we've been told. >> And are you guys here to like protect and serve my best interests? >> I'm here because you called. I'm not sure what it is we we can do for you. That's what we're trying to figure out. Well, if all you've done is used prior to us being here, and you're not in possession of any There's nothing we can do about your probation. I can't violate you for having consumed something prior to my arrival. What is it you you need of us right now? Sounds like from what we got from this gentleman, this isn't your where you live. >> I'm thinking about moving in. Um, psychiatric who would you recommend? >> Well, it's up to you. Do you want to go Do you want us to drive you somewhere? Because we can take you to the closest facility if you want to go. >> Where would you take me to? >> From here, the closest place would be the Vine. You ever been there? >> Um, no. >> Is that something you're interested in? Do you want to go to the facility? Are you thinking about injuring yourself or injuring yourself in any way? >> I'm thinking about laying here till the stars come out. >> Okay, so what what is it we can do for you, sir? I asked you I answered your question about the psychiatric facility. Do you want a ride there that we can offer you? What we would do is we would call an ambulance. They would get you screened because they would have to make sure medically you're clear. For for for for what, sir? >> That's a good question. Because by now, here's the fun thing. >> Okay. >> I was involved in this once. And there are drones of yours up there, there are drones of the other guys up there. And everybody's watching everything. We're going to play cat and mouse. Over some [ __ ] in the middle of the field high as a kite. >> If you want to go to a facility to be seen, a psychiatric facility, an ambulance can take you to the hospital. They will screen you. They will ensure that you're in good health so the facility can receive you. And then the facility can can you can get transported to the facility and then they will see you on a voluntary basis. You're not giving me a reason to send you there against your will. You're asking to go there voluntarily. And so that's what I'm trying to do is I'm trying to provide that opportunity. >> I'm actually screwed. >> Well, you're in the middle of a field right now. It's probably one thing you shouldn't be in the middle of. How did you get here? You're not living out here, so how did you get here? >> Step back 20 ft. >> Why? Why are you asking me to step back? What's going on? >> I am nobody. >> I mean, you're somebody. You exist in front of us. So you're somebody. >> What did you do to get the guy's coordinates on that one? >> What's your what's your name so we can call you by your name instead of just You don't have to be your real name. What name do you want us to call you by? Is your name Brady? Is that the name you gave on the phone? >> As James continues giving ambiguous answers, deputies eventually discover his name and learn that he has had several run-ins with the law. Yet, there is one particular charge he is infamous for, and James is about to volunteer that information himself. >> They poisoned me. >> Okay, what what is it that that you got going on? We're out here with the gentleman in the black beard and the ball cap just laying down on the grass on this little airstrip. What Are you having a problem with him? >> Sir, you said someone poisoned you. Who poisoned you? >> I'm talking about the one that the one that flew in on the airplane. That's the one. >> She was never 10-12 with him. She called us because her son-in-law was the one who flew in on the airplane. I guess when he came in, he called her. And then she called us. >> What side are you on? >> I don't know enough about anything to have a side. I'm here simply because you called us, and that's the only thing I'm worried about right now. >> I have a bad habit of stealing cars. That's what pissed her off. >> While James has warned deputies about his history with car thefts, they still don't know how serious it is. In June 2021, he was arrested in a hospital emergency room after tracking data led police to a stolen Honda CRV he had driven from Ocala to Leesburg. Court records show that James entered a no contest plea in early July of this year for violating a domestic violence injunction with two prior convictions, and was released from the county jail only 10 days ago on October 16th. But now, deputies are about to find out just how serious James has been about his habits. >> And these are going to work out though. See? Yeah, it was 10 days ago. And >> It was in here for violation of a injunction. >> Where are you going? Where are you going? >> Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey. Where are y'all two? >> What's going on? We don't really have any pursuit or anything at this point. Yeah. >> Is your car locked? >> Yeah. >> No. >> Whose car is that? >> I just locked it. >> Oh, that's yours. >> Hey! >> 556, that means >> Hey! Stop the car! Hey! >> As James sets off to repeat his history of squad thefts, deputies from across the area begin responding to the scene, [music] still unaware that they are chasing a seasoned criminal who will stop at nothing this time. >> I don't want to hit one of our own cars, man. [ __ ] it. >> Hey, is he in this car? >> That's 10-4, he's in the front. Sorry, I attempted to pit once already. >> Marion, I need every unit start heading this way that's not on something. Marion, make contact with that ambulance, tell them to stay right there at that gate, keep it locked. Don't open that gate. What's that? >> You want to ride? >> Hold on. Please stay tight. Sir, find somewhere to go to get safe. I don't know what this guy is going to do. Try to get in the the the the hangar or in the house somewhere. I don't know if he's going to charge us our vehicle or what. Stay off the radio. Listen, if we can keep that front gate locked, he can't get out of here. So, don't don't open the gate. We're trying to keep him in here. We we don't want him to get out of this field. Hey, I want one of you to get over there by that front gate in case an ambulance moves. Keep it blocked. We got him contained. Hey, back off him. We got him contained in this thing. Just give him some space. >> In theory, the sergeant's plan is perfect, as containing James within the property would hopefully allow them to end the chase without any damage. But, James seems to have a way around everything, and he is soon going to completely derail the sergeant's plan. >> 5507, do you have any unsecured firearms in this vehicle I need to know about? >> Just the rifle that's in the lock, in case you guys would know the way to unlock it. >> 10-4, you You have any additional handguns in there? >> 54, I just have my service pistol on me and then the rifle that's in the lock. >> 10-4, sounds good. >> 401, he came out on channel 3. James, James, pull over. James, pull over. >> All right, we're going through Ah, he made it out of gate, Marion. We're on 52nd Street. 52nd Street headed towards Pine. Notify OPD. He is not running with lights or sirens. He is at a high speed. >> 401, 401, I'm 10-51 on 52nd Street. What's the direction of travel? >> Coming up to Pine. All right, slowing down for traffic. Let's see what happens. All right, we're northbound Pine, northbound Pine. All right, we missed this first set of stop sticks. Still going northbound Pine. >> As James continues driving recklessly on the roads, units begin making more desperate attempts to stop him as their patience wears thin. But to James, none of their methods are new or even challenging. >> 53-70, I got stop sticks in front of the Queens. >> Is the GPS tracking that car? >> OPD's got sticks at Queens. My sticks are out of commission. Somebody ran them over. Negative hit on sticks. Negative hit on sticks. Go northbound. Passing 32nd. Hold up. Hold up. Clear. Clear. Clear. Clear. Get out of my damn way. All right, passing 23rd Street. >> Passing 23rd Street. OPD is passed. Moving over for the train. >> Get out of the way! GET OUT OF THE WAY! >> 23rd Street, OPD is passed. >> We're good. We We were out here cuz We were dealing with him and he got up, ran off on foot. I was checking the lock on my door, pressing the button, and he hopped in my car and took off. >> So, we got >> county chasing him down in my car, so holy So. >> With James fleeing in a squad car, frustrations continue mounting as deputies [music] desperately try to stop him before he harms any civilians on the road. But, James is determined to evade and is about to leave even more damage in his wake. >> Marion, OPD needs to stay out of my way. They're about to cause a signal four. >> All other agencies need to stay out of the pursuit. I only need Kilo until their Kilo drops. >> James 240, I wasn't able to spike him. >> Off the air radio. >> I need the radio, guys. Passing 200. >> Passing 200. Working on raising the net. D, can you please >> I'm going back now. >> Now >> What the [ __ ] are you doing? Get the [ __ ] OUT OF MY WAY! >> All right, 65 >> Marion, I'm out. >> Uh Marion, Kilo, they're going on 10th Street now. >> 6585, I'm behind OPD. We're westbound 10th Street. >> I'm going to put on that car. I'm going to put on that car. >> 6585, I'm out. >> 6580 >> I'm behind it. I'm going to try and pit maneuver. >> You're okay. You're okay. You're okay. You're okay. Hey, you're not going to get out of there. >> COME OUT WITH YOUR HANDS UP. KEEP YOUR HANDS UP. HANDS UP. COME OUT OF THE CAR NOW. >> TAKE YOUR TIME. TAKE YOUR TIME. WE GOT ALL the time in the world, guys. >> YOU JUST SAW A COP CAR CHASING ME OUT. GET OUT OF THE CAR. >> OPEN THE CAR. >> OPEN the door now. Take your right hand and grab that door HANDLE ON THE OUTSIDE. Take your right hand and grab the door handle on the outside. Step out. Face away. STEP OUT. FACE AWAY. Step out AND FACE AWAY. >> FACE AWAY FROM THAT. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS. >> USE YOUR RIGHT FACE AWAY. Face away. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS. >> I'LL GO. I'LL GO. I'LL GO. GENTLEMEN, I CALLED I called the cops twice. These guys showed up and they I told the cops it was false. There's something going on at the hilltop loft. I think they're doing prostitution. Somebody rob me, please. I think they're doing prostitution out there. I accidentally stole the The main guy's car in 2020. I think I stole his car in 2020. Anyway, I was up there for the last week. They drugged me, and I think they have other people in there. I came out and I was listening to the guy talk, and he's like, "Boss, I think this is the guy that stole your car earlier. You want to meet him?" The boss is sitting there asking I This I don't trust her and the guy. How bad's my Look at I don't think I got any damage. I was I DON'T TRUST THESE GUYS. I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE MY PHONE, PLEASE. >> GET IN THE CAR. GET IN THE CAR. >> With James in custody, the immediate threat to the public is finally over, but there is still much to discuss, analyze, and even celebrate. While some believe this situation should have never been allowed to happen. >> Dude, I was ready to sign Yeah, man, that was a beautiful pit. I might have have to say. I mean Yeah, and that's just I think that would come right off. >> Who was it? Whose car? Is Liddy okay? >> He's fine. >> Is he back over there still? >> Yeah. >> No, I'm I'm okay right now. >> 55 or something. We have a unit available. I'm stranded here at the scene. >> He wasn't confrontational with you in any way, right? He just simply asked to get use your phone and have someone and get a call for us. >> extremely agitated and confused and then >> He wasn't at the home knocking on doors, windows, trying to get into the house, inside the hangar, or anything like that, was he? >> No. >> No, okay. >> And he was he was very polite when he asked if it was okay if he stole my plane. >> No, that was Yeah. >> Is that your first? Is it really? I know, isn't that a pri- Bowman always steals my pen, every time I've gone in for a pen. >> I don't know. >> I never thought my first of career one would be against a cop car. >> We're going to have to do a follow-up to this now. >> [laughter] >> Dude. >> Dang. >> While things are under control now, most deputies are still reeling from the shock of what James pulled off or riding the high of finally stopping him. For others, it is still about piecing together the crucial details from that first call. >> Let me do that with her first. >> I am so happy. I'm so happy. Good to you, buddy. >> Well, if again, if you guys come across anything suspicious out here, so we can uh begin looking into that. >> Well, that was the sus- the suspicious thing was >> Well, I mean, that was definitely something else. So, this doesn't work. I literally was behind him doing this, and then all of a sudden the car door opens. And I said, "That's your vehicle, right?" Sanchez, she goes, "No, that's yours." And I'm like, >> Oh, no. >> Person I'm like, "Yeah, and he's in my car then." Cuz >> What year is the body style of it? >> No, I got the old I got 2014. You all right? You got enough air? Huh? >> I've had better days. >> I imagine so. >> Hey, let me turn the air down. >> You're ruining my brand new >> Hey, actually hey, don't mess with, please. Hey, who's Who's taking this truck? >> What do you mean, who's driving this vehicle? >> Huh? >> I don't trust anybody. It's nothing personal, but Okay. >> I Yeah. >> I'm Corporal Sucesky. I'll make sure that you're in good hands. I promise you that. >> Why would you do that? >> Why would I do that? Cuz I care. >> E- Even af- Even after everything you did? >> I just stole a car. >> Listen to me. >> You tracked me around the level playing field for Listen, for half an hour, and then you're still trying to be nice to me. >> We're going to we're going to treat you like a human. A- Once everything's done, like what it is now, everything's secure, we're we're going to treat you the way you'd want to be treated, my man. And that's just the way we work. What it is what it is. We can't undo what's already been done, but we're not going to treat you bad, man. You have my word. I've been here almost 10 years. You have my word. Okay? My My word is everything. You give me nothing. >> No, we're good. Okay. All right. >> [laughter] >> We're good. I'm just kidding. You hear me? You heard me yelling at you to make sure your car's locked, right? So I was pressing my lock. >> I didn't hear you. I was focused on him. >> Cuz I saw him walking to the car and I noticed when he got past us What? >> Windows open. >> Oh, windows down. Oh, no, as as he's coming towards past us towards the vehicles, I'm doing this and I said, "Hey." I was like, "Pay attention. Make Make sure Check your car. He's running towards our cars." and I'm doing this. He opens my car door which I I I was telling her I said he's entering he's getting in your car. She goes, "That's not my car." And I'm like, "Not my car?" And then I'm like, "Oh." And so I run up. But of course, I'm not going to run in front of my car. So I run around the back. I don't want to go over my own freaking head. At that point he's closed the door and he takes off driving. >> Thanks for telling me out. >> I'm sorry. I'm I'm sorry. >> No, it's not your fault. >> It's It's either stop to get you >> No, I I >> or just blow by. >> I wasn't expecting you to stop. I started running when I realized that I wasn't going to run down my own car. I looked back to see if you were in your car yet. >> Yeah. >> And I saw you were already rolling and I'm like, "I'm not going to make her stop and pick me up." And I was like, "Let me trail this so if something happens, you know, I need to be able to know what's going on." So if you notice I was kind of like half jogging, kind of trying to predict where he was going to go, get ahead. And once you spun him and he came right back the way you just were, that's when I had my gun out cuz I'm like, "If he runs back towards me, I'm >> I'm going. >> I'm shooting this guy. I'm not letting this car get by. >> You can hear on my body cam say, I don't want to hit one of our own cars, but [ __ ] it. [ __ ] it. >> Yeah, I mean they're really >> Ultimately, James Brady was charged with felony burglary of an authorized emergency vehicle, fleeing attempting to elude a law enforcement officer, grand theft of a motor vehicle.
