Earlier, she littered the hallway with cigarette butts, banged on a neighbor's door with a broomstick, and yelled obscenities from inside her apartment. Later, she tore up flower beds and damaged plants, but wasn't confronted. By the third call, she had ripped keypads off the entrances, thrown garbage out her window, and chased a neighbor while making threats. Officers were shown video evidence, and the program coordinator confirmed they'd be pressing charges. >> I was out here when you made the huge mess with the with the ashtray. >> So, that guy up there gets all the women drunk in here. >> It's not about that. >> They're dying. What are you doing? >> Whether or not they keep that. >> What are you doing? What are you doing with my information? What are you doing with my information? What are you doing with my information? Microsoft X. I dare you. Fire this guy. >> I'll adjust your cuffs. Okay. >> You're going to kill me. >> Yeah. I want a woman to judge me. Woman only. Woman only. >> Okay, that's fine. Yeah. >> Hey everyone, it's Trent, prior deputy sheriff, patrol sergeant, and canine handler. All right, so the big issue here or main point of topic is the fact that we have three cops dealing with one woman who more than likely has some sort of mental health issue, and one of these cops tases her. So, prior to me getting into the breakdown portion of that tasing incident, I just wanted to cover a couple things first. So, incidents like the one that we saw in this video involving people with potential mental health issues and law enforcement officers, this has been a hot topic for a very long time now. Specifically with regard to public opinion, there is a large portion of the population that believes that law enforcement officers should not be going to these calls at all because they are not adequately trained enough to deal with these types of individuals or if they do go to these calls that they should always be accompanied by a mental health care professional. Now, I could talk about this topic forever. I have a lot of experience in going to these types of calls. However, for purposes of time, I'm going to just focus on the incident that we observed in the video. So, back to the call itself, it sounds like these officers have been to the suspect's residence three times on the same day. So, clearly, she's having some sort of issue, but we don't know what her diagnosis is because I'm not a doctor. I don't know about any of you. However, she is exhibiting those signs of definitely having something off with her. More than likely, it is some sort of mental health issue, but we also don't know if she's ingested any drugs, if it's a combination of things or just one. That being said, something's not right. And when you're dealing with people like this, there's a couple different routes to go. It all depends on the crimes that are committed because unlike what the suspect said, even if you have a mental health issue, you definitely still can be arrested for committing a crime. But if you don't have somebody that wants to be a victim of a crime, then when you're dealing with somebody like this suspect, there's always the possibility where you can just place them on a 5150 hold, which entails you detaining them, transporting them to the nearest mental health facility if you happen to have one of those, or the nearest hospital. Then a mental health care worker will show up and take over from there. But because like we see in this video, we have somebody that wants to be a victim of a crime this suspect committed regardless of her mental health issue. These cops still have to do their job and enforce the law. And I will say based on my experience going to calls like this, not always, but a lot of the time they can turn very violent very fast because the person you're dealing with might not fully understand what's going on or fully grasp reality and they don't really know what they're doing. So that's why yes, there is additional training to learn how to talk to these individuals and how to deal with them and going to these types of calls, but you never know what's going to happen. And like we see in this video, this suspect starts to fight with these law enforcement officers because they're going to legally place her under arrest. She tries to bite one of them. I've been bitten a few times and you could potentially get some sort of infection from that. So to overcome the resistance, prevent escape and affect the arrest. And the fact that this suspect is not cooperating whatsoever, clearly fighting with these cops. We don't know if she's going to try to bite one of them again or be successful in doing so. They decided that was just the easiest route to go the less than lethal taser option in order to immediately deal with that situation and get the threat neutralized. Now, not every cop would do that in this situation. Some, because you have three cops there, would try to regain control of the suspect, place her hands behind her back, and put her in handcuffs. But others would do what these officers did because they might think that it's going to mitigate the likelihood of future injury to the suspect or to themselves. Either way, these types of calls can definitely be challenging and complicated. And regardless, in the vast majority of areas in the United States of America, the mental health care system is a complete joke and definitely inadequate. And that's going to be it for this one. See you guys in the next one. She was charged with criminal damage to property, assault, resisting, obstructing a peace officer. [Music] [Music]
