It's a forever possibility. There's a chance that we get your side of the story that no one's going to shoot you. Just before 2:00 a.m., Ashley Dyrdahl called 911 reporting a child assault inside a home in Burnsville. She met officers outside and showed them disturbing messages. While they began investigating, they didn't know the suspect, Shannon Gooden, had already barricaded himself inside with the children. I'm sorry that this is happening for you and I'm sorry that you have to you have to feel like your kids and your life is being torn away from you. Yeah. But I've mentioned it Shannon before. You you still haven't even given your story. This is the very very early stages of how how this starts out. Yeah. It doesn't mean that it's a forever possibility. There's a chance that we get your side of the story and the whole thing flips, right? But I haven't even We No one's talked to you yet about what happened. Yeah, that's why I came out there, man. I don't think so. I haven't had my radio on, so I don't know if they got the SWAT team out here. I don't know what they've got outside. How long can I sit up here, man? I would hope for your kids' sake, not long. They don't need to see any more of this, Shannon. It's not healthy for them. I'm getting tired, man. Thinking about coming down there, man, with my hands up. Well, I can I I can assure you that no one's going to shoot you. I'll place the handcuffs on. I'll make sure no one does anything besides treat you with professionalism and respect. Yeah. And the faster we do that, Shannon, Yeah. the sooner that your kids don't have to see or hear any more of this. It can't be healthy. Yeah, I agree. When you come downstairs, Shannon, Uh-huh. just let us know, okay? Shannon Cortez Gooden was a 38-year-old convicted felon who was legally prohibited from possessing firearms, yet he maintained a platinum membership at a local gun range where he practiced shooting frequently. Despite his criminal history, his girlfriend, Ashley Dirdal, allegedly acted as a straw purchaser to provide him with an arsenal of high-powered weapons and tactical accessories used in the February 2024 ambush. Following the standoff, a forensic analysis of Gooden's phone uncovered nearly 1,000 images involving a minor, providing a grim backdrop to the domestic dispute. We're still going to have the bright lights on, but that's only so we can see what's going on. All the guys here, I'm pretty sure every single person in this room, they've been listening to our entire conversation. We didn't get the trigger-happy SWAT team in here just to do that, so everybody knows that all we want to do is ensure your safety. And that means professionally and respectfully placing you in handcuffs so that this ends for your children and they don't have to hear it anymore. There's no need for any any violence of of any kind. We just want to make sure that we we ensure your safety. And that's as you mentioned, coming downstairs with your hands up, nothing in your hands. The final moments inside the home were a complete blackout. There is no footage of the SWAT team's entry or the end of the standoff, only the word of a child. Still trapped inside, one of the children called 911 to tell dispatchers that Shannon Gooden was finally dead. At 10:15 a.m., tactical teams breached the upstairs bedroom and confirmed the news. Investigators and the medical examiner later verified that Gooden had taken his own life with a single gunshot. The violence was over, but the investigation into the hundreds of rounds fired from that bedroom was only just beginning. Today, three members of our team made the ultimate sacrifice for this community. They are heroes. Our police officers and our fire paramedics, they come to work every day. They do it willingly. They know that they might have to give up their life for their partners, for someone else. Officers Paul Elmstrand and Matthew Ruegg and Firefighter Adam Finseth were killed responding to a domestic incident. By the time the sun rose, the cost of the standoff was agonizingly clear. Three first responders had made the ultimate sacrifice. Officers Paul Elmstrand and Matthew Ruegg and Firefighter Paramedic Adam Finseth. With the gunman dead inside, the investigation eventually came to a close, leaving a community to pick up the pieces. What began as a desperate plea for help ended in a tragedy that redefined the city of Burnsville. It is a grim reminder that behind every siren and every 911 call, there are heroes who risk everything and a day that no one walks away from unchanged.
