It's like a furnace. The heat was set on 81. There is a fire. There's a fire in the >> to that. They set a fire bonfire in the sunroom. So, no one's like cleared the house yet? Been through the house? We didn't go in. We going to wait till y'all got here before we went. And the sunroom door was open. So, we don't know if they were in there and they come out or they're still in there. Okay. Sheriff's office. Sheriff's office. Someone's been staying here. Is there a window back there that he could get out of? >> There is a um Yeah, turn on the road. There's a big glass window that looks like a like a church window. So, you can't see through it. I feel like he's been here for a while cuz someone's playing a game on that computer like Candy Crush or something. There's a bedroom door right past that one on the right. It's locked. He's in there playing some radio singing to himself. Is there any guns in the house that you know of? >> No. No. Then we'll take care of business. Okay. Sheriff's office. How can I help you? You can open the door slowly and show us your hands. Hands. Walk towards us. Stop. >> Turn around. Turn around. I got it. Go ahead. Put your hands behind your back. Do not move. Do you understand? Let me get the damn thing. So, what the Wow, I wasn't expecting that. Super slippery, wet. >> Yeah, there's nobody else in here if y'all want to come in. The house still smoking. The house doesn't smell like it's smoke room, but it's the little fire still smoking a little bit. >> Thank you. What's your name? I don't have a name. Close the door and get me out of this country. The suspect, as it turns out, did have a name. 24-year-old Mike Wilson allegedly started a fire in the house's sunroom and used photo albums that contained photos of the homeowner's deceased husband to start the fire. Luckily, the fire was put out by a relative of the owner who also happens to be a volunteer firefighter. The suspect was later charged with felony third-degree burglary and felony second-degree arson. He is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. This next case shows another suspect keen on fire as he possibly caused a large gas leak in his own apartment building intentionally, which has the potential to blow up the entire building. He did meth and then up for 3 days. You think? Yeah, he said he did. Come on. Come on. Let's go over here. Is there really only two up there? Yes. We'll get them in a minute. What happened up there? You said you slipped and knocked yourself I slipped and slipped them right in. I was throwing up. There's the stupid fire. Slipped in the fire. So, does your apartment reek like gas? >> As soon as I get up the steps, we're slipping on the steps in the snow and shoes are slipping on the floor. It's not a good day. He's just going to make a phone call. What's going on, bud? She's going to take me out. I had dip in the backyard before. Is there a person in the backyard? Yeah, he's in the backyard. They need to ask to She was allergic to ensue me up to sleep. Everything is funny in my house. This is the funniest thing in the house while I'm sleeping. I'm going to wake up and go what is going on here? She did she she threw up What did my mom do? She put something in my veins. Every time she she did she wants it. She lied to >> know it. She lied to you. Man, she's bad. She gave you meth? Every time she ever since time and Neil's time. She put my Neil's time. I did the video. That's just a dog. It's a neighbor's dog. But we just I can smell gas in there so we need you over here. She did that today for that. I had to get the stuff and I put the storage first to get the truck ready to go sleep. You know what to get the Dodge, get the bed in the back. That is the back of the Dodge Cummins diesel sleep like a baby every night with the diesel running. Never shut it off. You have a good day. You have your glasses closed. Oh my glasses. I have them here again. What's happening? This is gas leak. Oh. Again. Again? They're here to check it out. Um so, you guys were here this morning. Yeah. You got a key, Chris? Hm? No, you guys stay down here, Chris. Just give him the key. Just take it off your belt. You can't go up there. Especially smoking. There's a gas leak. That was the gas leak. That was the key open the door myself and do what I need to You can't go up there. You can't go in the house with the key open the pathway. The door was open. Can you just unsnip it from your belt? Yes. Okay, then go ahead. So, I mean to get it for you again? You guys want to get it for me again? I got the whole thing. You guys want the whole thing? Let's get it. Let's get the whole thing. Give my dad his keys and get out of here. Okay. Okay. Okay. What's key is it? That's the door both keys. They both keys open the door. They both open the door. They'll bring it right back. You know what They just got to get in. You guys want to turn it off for me? You guys want to turn it off cuz there's gas in there. I don't want Turn it off. Turn it off. He's freaking diesel on. They were here this morning and they're doing valves. I think the valves never shut off the whole weekend. Oh, I can smell something up there but I can't smell what it is. I can't smell it. >> Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Don't leave. Don't leave. So, all right. No, but he's he's All right. Yeah. Okay. Okay. All right. All right. Is he All right. Okay. Okay. Okay. All right. They don't Okay. Okay. Oh, okay. Okay. But he Okay. Okay. Okay. After transporting the suspect to the hospital to get checked out since he was possibly breathing in gas for an unknown amount of time, he does a complete 180 on officers. Get on your stomach now. Get on the ground. Get his arms. I got him. Give us your hands now. You done? I swear. I've never had suboxone before. I've never had suboxone before. Oh my god. What the Throw on this set. Sit up. Here, sit up. Hey. You can wash. Despite firefighters and officers' suspicions that the suspect, Chris, tampered with the gas meter that caused the gas leak, Chris was charged solely with attempting to disarm a peace officer and resisting obstructing. Both of those charges were later dismissed on the court's own motion after they discovered the defendant tragically passed away at the age of 38 due to a prolonged battle with drug abuse. Some police calls are loud, some are fast, and some are just uneasy. Walking into a house you don't know, especially one half empty, might not look dangerous on camera, but trust me, every officer feels it. You got doors you didn't open, there's someone inside you haven't met yet. So, you're pushing forward while your brain is running worst-case scenario. In our first encounter, the anger isn't really directed at officers, it's directed at confusion. When someone demands to be taken somewhere impossible and can't ground themselves where they actually are, you're not dealing with the fight, you're dealing with a mind that's just off. And now the officers have two responsibilities at the same time, protect the homeowner and protect the person causing the disturbance from their own mental state. The second situation is an unstable moment inside a shared building because it doesn't just affect one life, it places other people one bad decision away from catastrophe. You got the sleeplessness, the disconnect, the speech, then the sudden aggression during medical care. That's someone being pushed way past their limits. Sometimes these calls aren't about arrest at all, they're brief intersections between police and someone already losing a battle long before police even showed up. And really, when I'm watching a quiet scene, I'm watching the moment someone else's worst day almost became everybody's.
