At 8:39 p.m., dispatch advised Kewanee police that 27-year-old Alec Dillender had texted his family saying he was going to get gas. And then he was going to crash his car at 120 miles per hour. He was last seen in a gray Nissan Altima. Officers spread out across the city checking gas stations and scanning major roads. Minutes later, one officer spotted the vehicle. 2110 completely lost him tall on a 207 we transferred him to the sheriff's department. Alec Dillender. Kent Railroad. Kent Railroad. Turning onto Railroad. Heading south. South. South. 2110 39 going 30 south. 74 Rather than engaging in a continuous pursuit, officers began positioning themselves around nearby intersections anticipating the vehicle's direction of travel. As the speeding Hyundai moved through the neighborhood, patrol units waited at key corners ready to intercept and prevent the driver from slipping through the area. I'm on watch it. After reaching dangerous speeds, officers terminated the pursuit and lost sight of the vehicle. For a brief moment, there was nothing. No visuals, no contact, just radio traffic and uncertainty. Then minutes later, dispatch received another call. A vehicle had crashed near the viaduct at Northeast Street and Railroad Avenue. Witnesses reported heavy damage and smoke. Hey, hey, somebody just went under the viaduct and hit it. They're calling the cops. They're there. Okay. Or maybe not. All right, someone's out there, okay? Officer going the wrong way. Oh, they hit the viaduct. They're going the wrong way. There's a car that hit the viaduct. Missy But they went um Missy towards the viaduct and hit it and He didn't hit the curb, he just went straight through there. Do you know what the car looks like? Oh my god, my adrenaline is going so bad right now. Do you know what the car looked like? Straight through. He like went up the What did it look like and but he He was the guy who was Is the vehicle still there? It's fast. Excuse me, ma'am. Is the vehicle still there? I can't see it from here. Okay. What did it look like? >> I can see smoke and I can smell it. You can see and smell smoke, but you don't see the car? Cutting out. Are the officers there? I don't see No, they're coming the wrong direction. I just seen them pass here with the lights on in the opposite direction. Okay. You said the officers were coming. >> Oh my god, is that something laying there? Is that something laying there? They hit the side of the viaduct and But what is that moving right there? Is Is the vehicle still there under the viaduct? No. The vehicle's gone? Yes. It hit I seen an officer right now. Okay. Okay. All right, I'm going to disconnect then, okay? Okay. They're they're going there now. Yep. All right. I'm sorry, I'm a little bit shaken right now. Straight. you. You're welcome. Everybody close down the road. Close down the road. K-125, looks like there's some damage by the viaduct. I'm going to get out, try and then inspect it. Where's it Where's it at? He hit this? Which one? Right? That Damn it. He did it, dude. It was this one. That's this one. K-125, can we get fire and route or the vehicle's on fire up on top of the viaduct? The PC. You up there? Come down. There's fire. K-125, I can't get to it. What's that? So I took hard fire here. It blocked it out. Yeah. If you can hear me, come down. I don't know if we can get to it. All right. I'm here with you. I can't see. I can't see. Hold. Give it. Give it. Hold that. Hold that for you. I got you. YOU'RE ON FIRE. GET IT ALL OVER. HEY, GET ALL THE FIRE OUT. GUYS, WE CAN'T GET IN THERE. WE CANNOT GET IN THERE. OKAY. We got No, we got a Strowd, pull out what you can. We can't get in there. There's no way. Oh, yeah, let's go, let's go. QY60, get See if you can get fire to expedite that. Dude. One male occupant, no explosion so far. It's just been the fire. We are about 40 30-40 yd. Uh I got a hold of Peter I had dispatch get a hold of Pete. We have uh Uh we had a Jack that uh we tried to get a stop on. He sped up. We killed our lights and he rammed it to the viaduct going about 80. We have a huge fire uh at the viaduct. Uh fire's on scene. I just wanted you guys to know what we got going on. Yeah, every Everybody's fine. He Uh I had everybody kill our lights off. He came back into town and he just rammed it going about 80 or 90. Alec, what's his name again? What's his name again? Something Hall? Alec Hall? Hall, yeah. Alec Hall? Yeah, I believe so. Yeah, I'm not sure if it's Hall, but it is Alec. Yeah. But just in case he got ejected, he's like He's got unconscious or something. Just had to have him right there. And then the county's going up and around behind certain bushes, the train tracks coming back in that way. Just in case. Dude, it just sucks that we were all in one spot because we can't even set up traffic control at that point. So, it's like if we had people over this way, one over this way, we could at least shut down the road so he doesn't crash into somebody, but God damn it, dude. Oh, thanks. I was right in this area, too. We got a call about it, so I don't know how I didn't see it. Was he then ahead of you? Yeah. Yeah, he was No, he was ahead of like all of us. I lights when we got to uh we got to like the car dealership because I'm like I'm not chasing him into town going 80 mph. Right. Yeah, I seen you turn around and I seen him go down. Yeah. I thought he was just going to keep going back to the mountains. He swerved around in the NTM parking lot there. Mhm. Came back in the town. God damn it, dude. What? Yeah. I thought like if he did somehow survive it and got out, he'd probably get up the tracks this way somewhere. >> Yeah. Apparently he was on the phone with mom in the salvage. No one's with her right now. Sarah's coming. So, so >> need CID on scene probably. I think they're probably the best to work. Just wanted to let you Okay. Uh Is anybody coming in? Pete's coming in right now. So, go ahead and uh yeah, Adam's going to be coming in here shortly. I think Pete's handling that. So, why don't you two go handle parents and uh we'll go from there. >> We can take this. I don't know. I don't know which way to go. I mean, obviously odds are >> We need to not alive but I just want to But I would go be with him and let them know there was a car crash and So and what you guys need to figure out is is if he was on the phone with her the entire time were they sitting in the Rotunda while this was going on? >> I had it on body cam I was You were there? >> was on speaker yeah. Okay got you. Okay. 2166 might be handling it but if not could you give 22 a call cuz we're going to need an accident reconstruction. All right we still don't have confirmation yet they're still up there fire's out everything. You guys all okay? Yeah that was just super You guys see it happen or what? So the way >> mentally right now? Huh? You okay like mentally right now like Matt? I was right there like I was right I didn't see the crash because I thought he went up this way. Okay. So the reason I was trying to get people to go around and do everything is cuz he was coming to town 80 miles an hour and we needed traffic control. I didn't want him coming into town. Huh? He's in it. He's in it okay. Uh so yeah we needed traffic control with him coming into town at that speed. >> Who is it? Uh Alec Dillinger. Dillinger? I don't know I thought it was Alec Hall I think so. Yeah off Wilbur I think 700 block Wilbur or something like that. Um Uh I'm thinking of Larry Dillinger. Yeah I think that might be maybe dad. I looked up a Dillinger but uh They live out on the north end of town? Yeah they live right over here off Wilbur. >> the guy I'm thinking of he lives on the north end of Okay got you. So What up? Um One and two are on the way. Okay. I was county involved in it at all or they No county was like in the area but they didn't really >> They might have your I have them. >> reconstruction on my ass. Chief can get here then. We might need uh incisors or someone with something to the car out before we can get him out. Yeah, that's going to have to wait until we do the reconstruction and stuff. Um county's here. Right now I had him on the back side in case he got ejected. Matt's letting them know the break. You guys still have them? That was That was It was Chad. And Chad Chad just retired, so I would be all right with Slavonski doing it. I mean we weren't right behind him chasing him. No, no. So I can tell you exactly I can tell you exactly how it went is I saw him and I as soon as he was coming at me, I turned my lights on, stopped because I wanted him going past me and if there was any car behind me, I didn't want them going any farther. Okay. So I turned my lights I kept my lights on and cruised towards his way and as soon as Sarah got on the radio and called out, he's on the phone, he said he's going to himself. So I had got on the radio, I said everybody stop, we're not going we're not pursuing this, we're not doing anything like that. I don't want him wrecking while we have our lights on or are doing stuff. Mhm. It's a good call. Yeah. He flew past me. I tried to get turned around, I couldn't get turned around. They went around me and then we all came this way and then he could see the sign. So he had basically come straight on railroad and just went right into He just went straight into it. Yeah. >> he went out and came back. I got flagged down by some people over there. Yeah. Somebody called the 10-50 and All right. So He said I'm sorry, Mom. myself right now which starts with an Police say the man drove off. Officers went after him but ended the pursuit moments later. They saw the man again about an hour later and tried to stop him again. Police say he took off again. They got a few a call a few minutes later about a vehicle hitting the viaduct. Emergency crews went out and found the man at the scene. >> In the end, there was no arrest, no courtroom, no sentencing, just a burned out vehicle beneath a viaduct in Kewanee and a family left with the last words they heard over the phone. Officers had terminated the pursuit. They had tried to slow it down but sometimes the outcome is decided long before the crash. This case was closed as a fatal traffic accident. One driver, one choice, and a night that ended in silence.
