And then he started screaming at me and calling me a stupid [ __ ] and telling me I needed to talking tough to him. And he threw all kinds of laundry and everything all over the living room. And when I walked down the hallway to my bedroom, I told him I was calling 911. He kicked my door and broke one of the hinges in the on the door. Your door? Yes. This is my bedroom. Okay. How do you approach a situation when the man that you're trying to calm down is already convinced that you're the enemy? That's the challenge that officers face the moment they stepped onto this property. And as an officer, you face this numerous times in a day. Now, I usually try to disarm the person by not feeding the fire with more hostility. And instead, I use compassion. And sometimes by me just acknowledging someone's frustration will usually lower their guard. And other times, it just didn't. And doing calls like this is where deescalation is truly put to the test. And people love to critique the police, but police often encounter people where they're at their absolute worst. And police departments that have implemented deescalation training programs have reported a significant reduction in use of force incidents. For example, the Camden Police Department in New Jersey saw a 40% decrease in serious use of force incidents after implementing deescalation training. But here's what most people don't understand. Deescalation only works when both sides are willing. And if a suspect is determined to argue, provoke, or resist, there's only so much officers can do before safety becomes a priority. So before we rush to criticize how police handle these moments, we should ask ourselves, will we do any better facing people at their absolute worst day in and day out? And that's what this was. A test of patience, judgment, and resilience in the face of a man who wanted none of This suspect was charged with criminal mischief, resisting an officer without violence, and assault on a peace officer, totaling a bond of $1,500.
