It seems like you're wound up really tight right now. >> Why? Like, what's been you know, >> but I'm okay. >> The female subject is likely a person with mental challenges. If the police officer is correct and the female subject was drinking alcohol while already facing these alleged mental challenges, then this is a critical situation. [music] Alcohol often has more severe effects on people with mental challenges. People with these conditions may drink less often than the general population, but they are more susceptible to alcohol's harmful effects. >> No. So, I don't think you are. I can smell the alcohol on you. I see your behavior. Let's get someone over here to help you with the kids. At least give you a break. A metal break so you can decompress. Based on reliable sources, the suspect was charged with two counts of endangering children and one count of disorderly conduct. The children were placed in the care of the county's children's services. The suspect was sentenced to 180 days in jail with 176 days suspended, one year of active probation, and was ordered to complete an alcohol assessment. The suspect pleaded guilty to an amended count of endangering children, which is a firstdegree misdemeanor, and to disorderly conduct for allegedly being intoxicated. The safety of the children should always be the highest priority regardless of anyone's mental issues. A person with mental health challenges can experience much worse symptoms if their children are taken from them. The trauma of separation can cause severe anxiety, deep depression, isolation, and loss of identity. This experience can worsen existing conditions and sometimes cause a crisis, making it hard for the parent to cope or seek treatment. [music] Many individuals, especially foundational black Americans with intellectual and developmental disabilities, are punished within the criminal justice system rather than receiving appropriate treatment or support. This occurs due to systemic failures at every stage of the legal process from arrest to incarceration.
