Under 720 ILCS 516-25, the crime is committed the moment you take or conceal merchandise with the intent to permanently deprive the merchant of its full retail value, regardless of whether you actually exit the store. So, exiting the store without purchasing the merchandise is [music] most certainly retail theft. The store employee wants the suspects to be issued a criminal trespass warning. So, putting unpurchased items into bags, whether they are personal bags, store-bought gift bags, or even the store's shopping bags that are for sale, is typically seen as an attempt to conceal them without paying for them. So, next time don't walk out without paying. >> According to reliable sources, the two suspects were arrested for retail theft after walking out of the store with $174.61 in unpaid merchandise. While the two suspects were in the process of being booked, the police also discovered that both suspects were in possession of cannabis, so the police added an additional charge of unlawful cannabis possession to their existing charges. If the two suspects had accepted the store employees offer to pay for the merchandise, they would never have been charged.
