US Marshalss arrested Dariana Burton, age 28, the girlfriend of escaped inmate Derek Groves on Monday, June 9th, as part of the ongoing investigation into the May 16th jailbreak at the Orleans Justice Center. According to Deputy US Marshal Brian Fair, Burton was wanted on a warrant from the Attorney General's office for conspiracy to commit Simple Escape, a felony charge. Her arrest is the latest development in the manhunt for Groves and fellow escape Antoine Massie, both of whom remain unaccounted for. Burton, a former correctional employee, is accused of picking up at least one inmate in the immediate aftermath of the jailbreak. According to the affidavit, Burton participated in a video call with Groves 2 days before the escape. Groves initiated the call from inside the jail on May 14th. Investigators say Burton was seen holding a second device up to the camera, displaying an unknown man who joined the conversation remotely. The move allowed Groves to communicate escape plans outside of the jail's monitored systems. In a follow-up call later that evening, investigators say Groves again communicated with both Burton and the unidentified man. During the second conversation, the man reportedly called the escape plan a bad move and warned it could trigger a manhunt. But by that point, detectives believe Burton had already relayed the plan to outside contacts and was actively helping to coordinate it. Investigators say her role in the escape was intentional and active involvement in the planning phase. Furthermore, court documents state that sisters of recaptured escapee Lenton Vanurn received a facetime shortly after the escape and saw their brother in a car with Burton. Burton reportedly dropped Van Boren off at the home of Angel McKe on Peltier Drive in New Orleans where his sisters met him before he traveled with two other women to a relative's home in Mississippi. Burton is a former Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office recruit who in February of 2023 was arrested after officials say she brought a folding knife and a Cheeto bag full of tobacco and synthetic marijuana into the jail facility. She was booked for malfeasants in office and introduction of contraband into a penal institution. The charges were refused in October of 2024 by the Orleans Parish District Attorney's Office.
