Who are you? It's not good. >> Okay. What happened? >> I don't exactly know. I just got here. >> Okay. What do you What Tell me what you know to this point. >> I'm sorry. >> Tell me what you know to this point. >> I feel like losing it. >> What I know is that I was told that Dave pulled a gun on Jen and she kicked it out of his hands and it went off. >> Okay. Where where is Dave right now? >> In her basement. >> Is he shot? >> He shot. >> I just saw blood. I didn't go down there. >> I'm going to go get his kid. His kid is in the whole house and I was going to put him in my car. It wasn't >> I I want you to not do that right now. I got more cars coming. >> Okay. >> County 389. >> Okay. I just wanted to boy. His He's only 10 and he's by himself. >> I will take the air. Uh there is reported someone shot in the residence. Uh they're supposed to be in the basement. I'm out with another party that showed up after the fact. >> Who are you? >> I am a good friend. >> Come on. Move away from the house right now. >> 39. I swear to God. >> Okay. Go on. Go ahead. Sorry. >> Are you okay if I pat you down down here? >> Yeah. I just Whatever you >> Is that okay? I just When there's guns, I just want to make sure. >> Oh, 100%. I will do whatever you want. I >> Perfect. >> Don't want to fire up. I can do >> I'm just going to have you sit in my car so you're warm. Okay. >> Is that okay? >> Yeah. >> I just don't want at this point in time. Who's So, it's Dave's son in the in the pool. >> Yeah. Okay. This is so bad. >> So, Jennifer's not shot. >> No. >> Okay. She's not. You can just tell me what you want. >> Just stand in front of my car here. I'm just going to pat you down for weapons. Do you want to unlock my car? I'm going to have her have a seat. >> Okay. Here. Just set your purse on top there. >> Okay. >> Yep. >> Okay. Here's my phone. >> Okay. So, here's what I'm going to do. On your vital areas. I'm going to use the back of my hand. Okay. You understand? >> Yep. I do. >> Perfect. Sorry to be in your stuff. >> Nope. You're okay. My purse. My ID is in there >> if you need it. Um, it's in the zipper pocket. >> We'll get to it in a minute. Why don't you just go have a seat in my car? >> Okay. Can you put James in the same car? I'm going to try to, but I don't want you to call anyone at this point. Okay. >> Yeah, I won't. You want to I will >> just have a seat. Okay. >> Am I going to >> No, no. I just >> I just want to secure you for safety. Okay. >> All right. >> Okay. >> So, real quick, how did you get involved tonight? >> I had called her just to see like how she was doing. Yep. >> Um and she just called me like and was frantic. She's like, "You need to get over here now. You need to get over here now." >> And I didn't at that point I didn't even know what was going on. >> Okay. And so she met me at the door or actually she met me down here and I'm like let's go up there. Let's go see because I don't know, >> you know, I've never been in a situation like this. I didn't know. >> All I said is if he's hurt and he's not breathing, then don't touch him. >> But I don't know like if she went down. I don't know. >> Okay. And your understanding is >> pulled out. So what happened to the gun? What how did the gun come in play? >> Just your understanding. >> I was told that he pulled he got the gun out of her safe because he knows her safe code. Okay. >> And that he was pointing it at her and she went to go kick it out of his hand and I guess it discharged or >> it discharged or >> And you believe that he might have been shot. >> Well, I saw blood. >> A lot of blood. >> Did you see him at all? >> It was a quick peek from the top of the stairs and I turned around cuz I feel like I'm going to vomit. >> Yep. Were you in it was in the basement that you saw that? >> Mhm. Right down the stairs. >> Okay. Thank you. Okay. So, I just pulled her back right now until we figure out what's going on. >> But why is Jennifer doesn't know we're here? >> Nope. >> Can we call? We can call. Yeah, >> let's call Jennifer and have her come out. >> Okay. >> Okay, that's fine. Okay, just we'll figure it out, Jennifer. Okay. >> Yep. Come on out. Come on out with your hands up. >> No, I'm right here. >> Yep. Walk out towards our voice. >> I'm right here. >> Keep coming out with your hands up. >> Making contact. >> Yep. Keep walking towards our voice. >> Making contact with one. >> Okay. Keep walking towards our voice. >> I am. >> Yep. You understand? Keep walking towards us. >> I'm down. >> Yep. Keep walking towards >> No. Stand up. Stand up. Jennifer. Jennifer, stand up. >> Stand up. Stand up and walk towards us. >> Keep walking. >> I'm sorry. >> No. Keep walking towards our voice. >> I'm sorry. I want you I thought you wanted me down. I'm sorry. >> Keep walking. >> I'm right here. I didn't do anything wrong. >> All right. Hang up the phone. >> I can't. You have it. >> All right. Is there anything on you? >> No. >> Okay. >> I don't even have a run. >> Okay. >> I didn't do anything wrong. >> Come back here. Come back here. Tell me what what's going on. >> Uh Dave, hang up with me. >> Do you want me to go down? What do you want me to do? Please don't push me. >> Hang on your phone. >> No, you can hold on to it. It's okay. >> No, hang on to your phone. >> What? Where is Dave? >> He's on the floor downstairs. >> Okay. >> He shot himself. >> He shot himself? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Where is the 9-year-old? >> He is down in the pool house, I believe. I called Amy. I think she was speaking to him. I don't know if he's still down there. >> Okay. Is Dave making any sounds? Any >> I don't know. I didn't go down there. Okay. >> I I didn't I didn't go down there. >> Can I don't need to hurt me. Please don't hurt me. >> You're not You're not hurt. Put your hand. >> I didn't do anything wrong. He came after me. I didn't do anything wrong. >> Can I have one of you guys? >> Go with this officer. All >> right. >> What's that? >> Is there anybody else in the house? >> Hey, the only person in the house is Dave and the nineyear-olds at the pool house. >> Yes. >> That's it. >> No. Um, we have a boxer and a great dane. >> No other people. >> No. No people. >> Just Dave and the nineyear-olds in the pool house. >> The dogs are harmless. Okay. Please don't hurt the dog. All right, we need to get you to a spot where you can take a couple deep breaths and then I'm going to go and make sure that enough of this. >> We'll get you in a warm car that way you're not in the cold. Okay, >> I'm okay. >> Okay. >> So, we can't do this car. We got to You got to go back to >> Let's keep walking. Okay. >> Can you guys get James? >> I don't know. >> James. James. >> Was James in the house? >> James is 10. Yeah, he's >> Okay. My partners are with him. Okay. >> James is the only one here. My kids are with my ex tonight. And the only other thing in the house and James are my dogs. And Dave was threatening to kill himself. >> Okay. And my partners are with them right now. Okay. >> Dave's dead. I know he is. There's blood everywhere. Where's James? >> I just Is James his son? >> Yes. >> Okay. >> Please. They're not going to do anything to your dogs, okay? They would never hurt your dogs. Most of them have dogs themselves. They wouldn't want to do that. Okay. And you said the dogs are nice. They have no They have no reason to do anything with the dogs. Okay. >> Neither of us do. I don't know why. Why do you do this? >> I know. I know. Just keep Deep breath. Deep breaths. Okay. >> In through the nose, out through the mouth. Come on. >> Can you please >> I'm going to go check on James and I will come back. >> Can you Where can you check on them both? >> Yes, I will. I will come back with you. >> Thank you. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> This is the This is >> Check with Dave and then >> my witness is this is her car. And then we're going to need two, three people. You're going to need to get that 9-year-old. >> Yep. >> Sheriff's office. >> Hold that door. >> Hold here. I'm going to clear out here. >> Shoot. No. Come here. No. Sh. Oh, I just put all >> the victim was pronounced dead at the scene from a gunshot wound to the head. He was later identified as 47year-old David Joseph Nanovic. Nanovic had been in a romantic relationship with Jennifer. That kid bring him around. Don't bring >> Y. Yep. >> His name's James. >> Yes, that's supposed to be. That's where him and David are living. >> Are you the only one in here? >> Your shoes. >> Um, yes. >> I'll bring it to your mom. >> What's your friend? >> Amy, right? >> Amy. >> Amy. >> Yep. >> Okay. Okay. Sorry about that. Your your friend Amy. >> Come on, James. We're going to go on this side. Okay, bud. >> Yep. >> You're not any trouble. Okay. >> You're not any trouble. >> Who you talking to? >> Your grandma. Hey, Grandma. He's safe. >> Grandma, you're with the police. >> Yep. We're going to go walk him out to Amy. Okay, Grandma. >> Thank you. >> Yep. >> Bye. >> Bye. >> I just want to know is my daughter alive. >> We're still checking out, buddy. Okay. >> We'll let you know when we can. Okay. >> You're being very brave. Okay. You're nine, right, James? >> I'm 10. >> 10? Oh, okay. When did you turn 10? >> Valentine's Day. >> Oh, well, happy Billy birthday, bud. >> Thank you. >> Did you do anything fun? >> Hung out with my friends. Oh, very cool. >> You can clear the main and medics are clear to come up to the scene. They can pull in the driveway here. So, I'm just going to lock the door and then you can sit back there and say, "Where was her?" Okay. >> So, he doesn't know anything. >> Scary. Okay. But I'm right here with you. Okay. >> Uh he's at the bottom of the stairs. Uh appears to be at least one gunshot wound. There's a gun next to him. >> Uh we just need we don't know there's we're figuring that out. But anyway, if you guys could just go and check her vitals and see what we got. >> I'm not sure how long it's been since >> there's deputies down there. >> Deputies down there, >> but nobody else in the home. Otherwise, there's a couple of dogs. One's in the one one's locked up. The other one is friendly. >> Okay. >> How's it going, James? I'm Griffin. >> Thank you. I'm I'm sorry. I'm just really close. >> Oh, that's all right. I get it. I don't either. >> I just want to know if my dad's alive. >> Okay. >> Cuz I already lost my mom. >> I'm sorry to hear that, buddy. >> And what happened to her isn't like cuz she got sick or anything like that and it was worse. >> Okay. >> She like she had a mental disorder called bipolar. >> Yeah. >> One night she got really drunk. >> She went out to her car. >> Okay. >> Sorry to hear that. I didn't see the blood, but I saw the gunshot. And my dad came down. I was like, "Hey, my mom was playing around with the gun." And now she's in the car. I didn't want to tell him she was gone. >> So, we went out, saw she was gone. And >> yeah, then we moved here and this happened. And I can only imagine cuz I know she had a gun. I can only imagine that dad got shot somewhere. >> Okay. I don't know if that's true. I don't know if it's not. That's just my biggest guess. >> Okay. >> And I know my dad I know the first thing he said is I wouldn't see my kid. I know that's probably the first thing he said. >> Mhm. >> If he's going to the hospital, will I be able to visit him? >> Yeah. If he's if he's going there, I'm sure you'd be able to visit him. >> I'm just I don't know. I'm I'm not inside there. I don't know what's going on. I wish I had more answers for you, buddy. >> I know. This is the first time. >> I know. I got you. >> I'm 10 years old. I've been through a lot more than any adult. >> Yeah. >> I've seen things. I've heard things. I know things I shouldn't. >> You're very strong, James. >> Every time this stuff happens, it's just another normal day. >> I'm I'm tired of it. >> Jennifer, meanwhile, was still unaware that her two children had run to their father's house at the very start of the deadly altercation. >> Hello, miss. So, just tell them what you were telling me. We want to be able to account for everybody here. Go ahead and tell them. So, you said you had three people. When you came out of the house, you said the only people left in the house was David and and it was just David and uh James and I. >> My kids went back to their dad's house tonight. >> You just told me there was two other kids here. That makes me believe that my kids came back. >> My ex lives literally in my backyard. My kids come back and forth in between all the time. >> So, your kids are >> It's like not like it's nothing abnormal for them just to show up like if I'm in bed and they just >> call your your ex-husband and tell him to keep the kids at his house. They wouldn't come over here, you know. >> They might. Yeah. >> I will call him to make sure that the kids say it. He'll follow us. >> Jennifer. >> Yes. >> He says you're kind of freaking out. What's going on? >> I I have >> my partner that has you. >> Um I'm not freaking out. >> You want me to talk here? Let you know I have James. >> I just went to where James and Dave were in the back of our house. >> And where my kids were. >> Well, you said your kids were in the house, right? >> My kids were here like earlier like 20 months before um we got into an argument. >> Okay. Okay. But they turn off. >> Did he go with Steuart? Do they go with Steuart? >> Um my Stuart has my So Stuart and I alternate the kids. He has them this week. >> Okay. So, >> but my kids come and visit me even when they're with their dad. >> Okay. But your two kids right now are with Stuart. >> Uh they should be if they went home after they left here. >> Okay. We'll call >> their teenagers. >> Okay. >> Jennifer was brought in for questioning and investigators were clearly skeptical of her story. She maintained that David had accidentally shot himself during a struggle, insisting she had only kicked at his hands. >> So, John, I'm uh with the the Minnesota Bureau of Comprehension. I'm a special agent with them. I we come out and assist with death investigations, okay? And um I understand that, you know, [snorts] a crazy sort of horrible event happened at your house tonight. Okay? We want to talk to you about it and and understand what happened and you can decide at any time to exercise these rights and not answer any questions or make any statements. Do you understand all of these rights? >> Yes. >> Okay. And having these rights in mind, are you able to tell me what all went on last night? >> I think I would be more comfortable having an attorney just because you guys have been to her house so many times. Okay. Okay. >> And I've called and asked for help several times and haven't done it. >> Okay. We will h have an attorney come. >> Thank you. >> When Jennifer refused to provide a statement, investigators had to rely on her friend Amy for details that night. >> Um, what time do you think you got there? >> Let's see. 10:30, 10:35. >> Okay. So, you left pretty early after Charlie had messaged you. >> I did. When Jen um she was just like Jen called me. She called me a couple times and she just said, "You need to come over here. You need to come over here." But that's happened before when her and Dave have just been like verbally fighting and stuff like that. So, that's just what I thought it was. I I grabbed pajama pants. I thought we were going to go outside, have a cigarette, and I was just going to calm her down. >> Mhm. >> I didn't I had no idea any of that was happening or happened. Um she was just like, "I love him. I didn't do this." like you know that I'm in love with him and you know I don't know what happened and she's like it's not good and I kind of didn't really know what she was saying I didn't really believe I it's I just didn't know what I was walking into to be honest >> so obviously like her being so [snorts] upset I couldn't she couldn't even talk >> she couldn't even like say words she was like hyperventilating so I really I don't know what happened and I'm I swear to God I don't I don't know how it transpired. >> So you pull up, she comes running down and she's saying I I I love him. I didn't do you [clears throat] know >> well she had been telling me that's the only thing that I could get out of her. She's like it's not good. She's like I don't think he's breathing. She's like you need to come here. You need to come here. Okay. >> And I'm like then you need to call an ambulance. And she's like I'll do that when like when you get here. And I was just pulling up. And I'm like, whatever is going on, if it's that bad, we need to call the police. And you guys, or the police got there before I could even call. >> And so, did you go into the house or were you going around back? >> No, I did go into the house. Um, I asked her for a water. I hadn't been drinking or anything, but I was just like like I I don't know. I took one sip of it and she's like, "You got to go get James." The dogs were barking. I walked by the stairs and um I could I could see him in a lot of blood. I I'm like, I'm not going down there. She's like, go get James. And that's when I walked out >> the front door. >> Out the front door. And was trying to go around >> and that >> and I got stopped. It was literally like minutes. >> Okay. So, you didn't go down the stairs? >> I did not. >> Um, how long were you in the house? >> Maybe 4 minutes. Five. I It was quick. >> Where all did you go in the house? >> I literally walked from the mudroom into the kitchen by the stairs and back out the front door. Okay, >> that is it. But I have been to that house before. >> Yeah. >> Okay. So, like, >> you know, like I've stayed over there before, >> but that is I went straight from the mud room into the kitchen, walked by the stairs when the dogs are barking and I'm like, I can't I'm not No. >> Okay. >> And I walked out. >> If you were in the house for 4 minutes in the kitchen area, where was Jennifer? >> She was right by me. >> Okay. What were you guys talking about? Was 4 minutes. >> We didn't. She was like hysterical. I asked her for a drink and she like or like a water and she didn't have any. She was trying like trying to give me her cup and so I grabbed some ginger ale out of her fridge. It's probably sitting on the counter. >> Mhm. What did she say then? >> She didn't. She's like I think he's dead. You know, she had told me that what had happened was he had gotten her gun out of her gun safe. And I'm like, "How did he get that?" And she said, "He's got my code. He takes it. He gets in. He like goes in there a lot. I don't even know what her gun looks like. Okay. >> She's told me before it's pink that she goes to the shooting range with it and that's it. I don't even know what kind of gun it is. Um and she said he was like pointing it at her, threatening to kill her and she like kicked it and it went off. >> So he he got her gun out of the safe. >> That's what she told me. I don't even know where her safe is. >> And he was pointing it at her. >> Mhm. Threatening to kill her. That's what That's what I was told. But he he's done that a lot. Like I've heard him do that. >> He's threatened to kill me >> in person. >> Yeah. >> When's the last time you heard him do that? >> Probably January. He and I don't get along just because he of the way he talks to me. Like he tells me to kill myself and you know he's going to kill me and blah blah blah. I'm the worst person in the world yada yada yada. And um he yeah he's threatened to kill me when I went over there one time. He doesn't like it when I come over because I'll just verbally fight back. Yeah. >> And he was in the pool house one time and I she's got a deck off of her main like living room and he was down by the pool house just trying to intimidate me and threaten me. Okay. >> And I'm like I'm not having it. Like we're not doing any of this tonight. And this was in January, you think? >> That probably was in December, but it's just happened so frequently. >> So, what what is David and Jennifer's relationship? >> Okay, so it's kind of confusing, so try to follow me here. Dave's mom is Jen's aunt, but Dave and Jen are not related by blood at all. So, I don't know like how that works. The it it's goofy to me, but they did have a relationship at one point. >> Okay. So, they've been like intimate and it's been a couple. >> I think so, but it's never really been confirmed. >> Okay. So, >> that's just the thought. >> Has she ever told you like have that they've had sex? >> Mm- No. I guess what makes you believe that they were in some sort of intimate relationship? >> Because because she like has told me that she loves him. She loves him. She loves him. And I just have to imagine the same about her. It's just >> you can love a a cousin. >> Yeah. But >> you think she's talking love like >> I think like love love >> like attracted. >> Yeah. I think at one point I think I think at one point she was I think I don't know about anymore but she even told me tonight she was she loved him and she was in love with him but she's like I don't know what I like I don't know what happened. >> So he's lived here for over a year. >> I think he moved here in August. August of >> 23. >> And then you said James and David live in the pool house. >> Yeah. >> How did it's like guest house pool house whatever. >> Okay. How did James come into the picture then? >> Okay, so it's my understanding that Jen was trying to help Dame uh Dame Dave and James. Um because Dave's girlfriend, who is James's mom, committed suicide at their house the December before. So, James came first and Jen was taking care of James >> at that time, like shortly after that. I don't know when he got here. >> I can't remember. >> Prior to Dave coming. >> Prior to Dave coming. Yep. >> Okay. So, James showed up and then David showed up in like August. >> When do you think James got here? >> I don't know. I don't think he was here for the school year, but I can't be sure about that. >> Okay. But >> I'm not 100% sure. So James's mom and David were dating. >> Yes. >> And James mom killed herself. >> Yes. >> Okay. Where did that happen? >> That happened in her car in their garage while they were both home. >> Like in Pearl Lake? >> No, no, no. This was in Pennsylvania. >> Okay. >> Oh, okay. >> Okay. So, she found herself and then So, did David just call Jen and say, "Can you watch this kid or what?" >> I don't really know how that happened cuz we weren't talking at the time. I don't I think Jen and Dave were just trying to help each other because Jen was going through divorce and Dave, you know, had that happen and they were just trying to like >> I just I I guess I don't get how James ends up with Dave. >> It's his dad. >> Oh. Oh, it is his dad. >> I'm so sorry. >> Okay, you said his girlfriend. Okay, I'm sorry. >> Yeah, James's I'm sorry. Dave's girlfriend is James's mom. Dave's James's >> I when you said it Dave's girlfriend. I I assumed it was that Dave wasn't the the father. >> He is. >> Okay. >> Mhm. >> Okay. Um that makes sense. >> Yeah. >> Okay. I appreciate that. >> No, no problem. >> Um Okay. So, he showed up and then Dave showed up and uh >> I want to say it was maybe June. That's just a guess though. >> Okay. >> And then uh as far as you know, Dave and James have been living in the pool house. Um there's there hasn't been like >> well so it's kind of confusing because Dave and James are not allowed in Jen gets her and Ste switch one week one week one week one week and Dave and James are not allowed in their house while Charlie is there because Jen doesn't want any conflict with her divorce >> in him. >> Okay. Is she fully divorced? >> Mhm. It keeps getting delayed. >> Okay. >> So, they're separated. >> How many kids does she have? >> Two. >> And >> And so, I understand correctly, you were talking to her and she said that he got her gun out of her safe >> and was pointing it at her. >> Yep. Threatening to kill her >> and then she kicked him. >> No, she kicked the gun. >> She kicked the gun and it went off. >> That's what Yes. That's what she told me. >> Okay. Did you when you looked down the stair, did you see the gun there? >> No, I didn't. I It was so quick. All I saw I didn't even It looked to me like he was like face down. I All I could see was like blood on this side and I just moved. I I can't do that. I don't I obviously knew that he was not alive, but the amount of blood that I saw. I didn't go down there. >> Do you know of her having more than one gun or they just? >> Mm-m. Not that I know. Just one. one. Where's your say? You say you don't know where it's at. >> Okay. >> I don't. >> Okay. >> Do you know the combination to it? >> No, I don't. I don't touch guns. >> Okay. >> I've shot a gun one time and it was actually the summer and it was at like a shooting range and I was worried to do that. >> That's the first time I've ever touched. >> Why would David have the combination to hit safe? >> He's got keys to her house. He comes and goes as he pleases. So, that didn't surprise me at all. >> Okay. Like it didn't It worried me. It worried me. >> Why? >> Um because he's got several guns and because he uses a scope like and he shines it on her when he's trying to intimidate her and like threatens her with it, waves it around like it he does. That's what I'm told. I've only heard threats. I haven't seen him his gun. >> Okay. So, you know, Jen, well, we've never met anybody before. Now, >> is she pretty intoxicated tonight? >> I don't I don't know because she was just so hysterical. I don't know if she's drunk or not. >> Is she generally intoxicated? >> No. Mm-m. >> Okay. >> She does drink, but it's like on occasion. >> How about David? What's his drinking look like? >> Bad. >> What does that mean? That means he's drunk by 8 a.m. And I hate to even talk that right now, but drunk by 8 a.m. sleeping the day, waking up, drinking >> all day. No one is trying. >> I'm not stupid. I KNOW HOW THIS ENDS. >> Because I DON'T WANT TO GO. I just wanted to kill myself. Thank you. >> I hate you. >> Why would you do this to me? >> No, you don't. >> No, you don't. YOU HATE ME. WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS TO ME? >> Come back. Come back. Step back. Can you please pull on my shirt, please? >> Absolutely. I just my wife. >> Joelle's wife paid two $2,500 bonds the next day for her two charges for harassment and disorderly conduct. Joelle initially pleaded not guilty to the felony charge of harassment. But in December, she changed her plea to guilty in order to transfer the case to mental health court, remaining on probation for 2 years if she completes the mandated treatment program. Next, a domestic call at an apartment in Morehead, Minnesota that turns into a standoff. >> Show us your hands, Daniel. >> Drop the gun. >> In August 2025, officers were called to a Morehead, Minnesota apartment for a domestic assault and protection order violation. A woman reported being attacked by Nathan and Lucas Hyberg while two young children were still inside with them. But what started as a domestic call quickly turned into a deadly encounter. >> Is Nathan in the apartment room? Um, is anybody answering? >> No. Are you able to let us in the apartment? >> I don't think so. I mean, it's a long walk. >> I We haven't checked. We've been knocked. >> Sorry. >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> More police department. Come to the door. >> I wasn't able to get it. I'm sorry. I just Hi. Hi. Do >> you know if he's still in there? >> Is there anybody else in there? >> I mean, if they are, they are still in there cuz I don't have a key to lock it. >> Uh, his brother and himself. >> Nathaniel's more police department. Come to the door. >> Okay. Go hang out upstairs for us. >> We know you're in there, Nathaniel. We're not just going to go away. Nathaniel, >> it's not Nathaniel. It's Nathan. >> Or Nathan. If you want to bring your dog back to >> der, >> you can go ahead and just stand in the stairwell for us for now. We'll come talk with you. >> Nathan, we're not just going to go away. Come to the door, man. >> Nathan, I know you're in there. I heard you talking earlier. Come to the door. >> Nathan, it's Mor Police Department. You need to come to the door so we can talk to you. >> You want to hang out here for a second? >> Excuse me. >> You're trying to make contact. Okay. So, my daughter is disabled in there and she's asleep right now. >> So, >> it was Nathan and his brother Mason. >> Um, Nathan and >> Okay. Have you heard anybody exit the door? >> I don't know cuz I was down here. I took my dog out and yeah, I don't know if they left. >> Okay. How long has you been over here for? Um, they've been over here for about an hour. >> And what happened between you guys that made you want to call in? >> Well, one of them, well, he told me my boyfriend did. He told me and >> Nathan. >> Yes. >> Okay. How did he do that? >> He grabbed me by my neck and said, "Bitch, why are you calling the cops?" And I called the cops. >> Okay. Can you look at me so I can see if there's any marks on your neck? I don't see any. Did he hit you at all? >> No, he never hit me. It was just him putting his hand on your neck. >> Yeah. Show me >> when he did that. Could you breathe still? >> Yeah. >> It didn't affect your breathing at all. You could still speak or did it hurt? >> I mean, obviously I called you guys. >> Did it hurt when he did that? >> No, I just decided to call cops because one, you know, I know he wanted to see his kids. Fine. I let him see his kids and then all of a sudden that's what happened. >> Okay. Well, you know that you have that force protection. You shouldn't be letting them around you, right? Cuz I mean, it's in place for a reason. Is there any weapons inside of the apartment? >> No. No weapons >> other than like kitchen knives. >> Yeah. >> Okay. No. >> Mom, they're not going to bust a door down, I don't think. >> Are you guys going to >> Well, >> see my here. Hold on. Mom, can you talk to my mom, please? >> You can just put her on speaker. >> Mom, here. Hold on. >> Here's the deal. If we know he's in there, I heard a male talking inside, right? We could get a search warrant and if we don't have keys then we could enter in the apartment so we could break the door down. Yes. Why don't you see if you can get call to your landlord and see if they can get keys over. Can you do that for me? >> All right. >> Try to call your landlord. See if they can get keys. >> Nathan, come to the door. >> We have to get a search warrant to go in there. I heard a male talking in there. Okay. I I didn't I just heard her. So, >> unless she jumped out the balcony, >> you have enough for a search warrant. I mean, run it by bolts and >> No, then she said that he put her hands on her neck. Didn't obstruct her breathing or anything like that, but still enough for domestic. So, >> last time we were here, it took five plus minutes for him to come to the door last time, too. >> Nathaniel, come to the door. More police department. We are not going anywhere. We need to speak to you. Nathan, come to the door. We know you just wanted to see your child. We can understand that. The only other way this ends is with us busting the door down. Do you want that to happen with your kid inside? I think you're a better parent than that, man. This doesn't need to escalate to the point of us busting down the door. Nathan, come have a conversation with us. We don't need to escalate this and scare your kid. >> Nathan, just being honest with you, man. Being silent now isn't helping you out. I already heard you talking in there before you knew we were here. We know you're in there. You need to come to the door so we can have a conversation with you. I'm trying to give you the benefit of the doubt, man. You trying to be a good parent and be there for your kid. But this isn't something we just walk away from. So, I'm just asking that you be a good parent. to open the door and have a conversation with us so we don't have to scare your kids by knocking down the door. Nathan, we're it's going to be another minute or two. We're not waiting all day. If we need to go do a search warrant and knock the door in, we will. >> Nathan, here's the deal, man. There's about three options. You either open the door and speak to us. Okay? Or we get a search warrant, we bust down the door, or if there's a key holder that comes here, we're going to open the door and come in. >> Landlord's coming. >> Okay. Thank you. I mean, he doesn't live here. So, if the landlord comes with a key, we don't need a search warrant. >> Yeah, she as long as she gets >> she gave us permission. So, >> no, we won't need to go to search warrant. >> Well, looks like we don't need a search warrant, Nathan. But we're going to get a key. And if you don't come out before we get that key, then we're coming in. >> Where are you trying to go, man? >> This is nothing. >> Door Dash. What's the name on the door dash? >> Minecraft. Okay. >> Well, I mean, he's not going to be taking it, so >> he's he's not going to be taking it, so >> no one's answered the door for us. >> Okay. So, let me cancel it. >> Yep. You can cancel it. >> Thank you. >> Do you? >> Yes. >> Yeah. >> I'm just going to go double make sure and ask you we have permission to use the key to get in. >> Yeah. double check and then we'll >> I'm just doing it for our sake and you're we have permission to use that key to go into your apartment. >> Yep. >> And we can look through your entire apartment. >> Yeah. So I don't have nothing to hide. >> So we have full permission to go through your apartment and use that key to go into your apartment. >> You got it. >> Perfect. Who else is supposed to be in the home? It's supposed to be him and his brother. >> Yeah. And your kid? >> My kid. Go for it. We're going to be keying into the apartment. >> She gave us permission. >> I appreciate you, Regent, for the key. You go for it. Should be one of these two. >> Nathaniel, open the door. >> You can you can go. >> Yeah. >> Nathaniel, >> open the door, man. >> Smaller one there. >> Nathaniel, you need to come to the door and open it. I can tell you right now if we have to key into this door, I do not know what you are doing behind that door and in that apartment. You will have a gun pointed at you if we have to key into the apartment. He propped something up against the expensive entry. Nathan, move away from the door. >> Nathan, if this continues, you're going to be charged with obstructing as well. >> The next step is getting a search warrant and busting the door down. A key is not going to stop that. Exit the apartment. >> Nathaniel, this is is not going to end. We're not going away. Okay, you need to come and open the door. Move away from the door. >> No, >> I just heard I just heard him. He's standing there. I heard the floor creek. >> Nathaniel, if you do not come to the door, we are going to bust the door down. You need to open the door now. >> Let's try. Which key is it? >> It's one of the house looking keys. >> Sorry. Trying to get out of my hand. >> Nathaniel, open the door. >> That's most of turn. >> Yeah. I've never turned that far the first time. >> Did it go? Yeah. Open the door now. It's the police department. Nathaniel's brother, if you're inside, this is your chance. I believe your name is Mason. This is your chance to not be involved in this. You need to open the door. >> [sighs] >> Nathaniel, open the door. Let's get one more. Move out of the way of the door to Daniel. I >> got the door. >> I think he's like directly behind or something is >> Yeah, I got him right here. >> Hey, OPEN THE DOOR. >> GET YOUR HANDS. >> GET YOUR HANDS OUT. Get your hands out. pass. >> He's still refusing to move out of the way of the door. He's blocking it in the corner right now. We can see him, but he's not opening or moving the door. >> Okay. Ready? We're going to push in. I'm going to clear far. You guys turn corner and get him. Ready? Does that work? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Say that one more time. >> You're pushing or he's pushing? >> I'm pushing. >> Still there. Show us your hands, Daniel. Shots fired. Shots fired. >> Anybody hit? >> I'm good. I'm good. >> Shots fired. Nail suspect, blue jeer, blue shorts, white Viking jersey. >> Keep eyes on the other side of the apartment. I'm going to come around to you guys. >> Get outside now. Outside. Outside. >> Why did you guys shoot somebody? >> We did not shoot. Outside now. >> Who shot somebody? >> Need to go. >> Mom, where's my kids? >> They're inside. If you can note in the comments, some sort of black handgun, one round fired. >> You're good. You sure you're not it? >> Double check. >> Here, back up. >> I'm good. Okay. I don't see I don't see anything. You turn around. I don't see any holes in your vest. I think you're good. Okay, I just at 2414 3rd Avenue North where at apartment 16 m barricaded inside with a firearm. One shot fired at officers. >> After several attempts to resolve the situation safely, officers came under fire from inside the apartment. The threat forced them to pull back and call in the Red River Valley SWAT team to take over. Occupants of apartment 16. Exit with your hands up. >> Come here. Come here. >> Come here. >> You're safe. When the woman came home, she found the door chained from the inside. As she tried to run, Bellazan pulled her back in by her hair and arm. Over the next several hours, he physically attacked and sexually assaulted her multiple times. He held a knife to her throat, beat her, bound her hands and feet, and strangled her until she lost consciousness. At one point, he drove her to his mother's home in St. Paul to retrieve a handgun. >> Well, we'll start with the simple stuff, then. So, he took your phone, your wallet, and your how much money? >> My neck hurts really bad. It's a $1,200 in rent. I have a kid. Like I don't I'm 16. I mean, I'm 19. He's 23. >> Okay. Uh, what's his name? >> Jawan Bellison. I have a restraining order. >> You want to spell that for me? >> J A W A N E. >> Middle name? E O No, no, no, no, no, no. Take your time. All right, I'm paid by the hour. There's no rush here. You've been through a traumatic experience. You need to catch your breath. I'm not I don't want you to feel like I'm trying to rush you, okay? Cuz I'm not. >> I've been trying to talk to you guys all week and tell you all week. He's been hiding my freaking stolen car at his mom's house. This where he's going right now. >> Okay. his gun that he just shot at me. You should literally be able to see there's dust in his chamber. It's just been shot. >> I didn't know exactly where he threw it with my car again cuz it's just so sad. >> Yep. So, I'll get that information, right? And then I'm going to put it in a report and it's going to be sent to people who it it'll be out of my hands. I take the report and I write it out. Just uh walk me through what happened. to bear. >> So, I've been in my house hostage for like a week now. I've been getting beat on conscious, choked out. Um, this morning we woke up and it was just one of those days he could feed me. He's cut all my hair off and took my eyebrows last night. Not all of me. He has a voodoo doll. He's been putting my hair on voodoo dolls. Token me to the point where I'm dying. I called the police yesterday. They came. I told him he's been in my house and I can't. He won't let me leave. They just search for the restraining order and he ran away with my stolen car. They seen it was parked in the back, but I don't know. I guess they couldn't chase after. I don't I'm not I'm not mad. I just wanted to handle. >> So, you made a report yesterday night? >> Yes. And they came to my house. He was asleep and I had finally had my phone for the first time all week. I had got it while he was asleep and I waited on the phone for the 911 for like 30 minutes while he was asleep and he came and I guess my restraining order wasn't all the way active. So, all they could do was serve it to him and then he left and he came back to my house. Do >> you guys live together or No? >> No, I don't live together. I don't live He's never been allowed access to my house. He has my front entry door key. I've had to change my key. >> What's your address to your house? And so today he came back. What time did he come back today? >> No, he came back last night when the police left. >> Okay. What What time was that? Um, that was around like 700 p.m. 7:00 p.m. And once he got me, he took the stolen car and we drove to his mom's house and he made me way in the garage and he went inside and grabbed his gun and he brought me back home and he was going to kill me at any second if I didn't run out. He was ready to kill me. So, you went to his mom's house and you were with him. >> Yes, I was with him in the car. >> And what kind of car is it? >> It's a 2008 all black Impala with a scrape on the side and a black donut on the right back. >> And is that your car? >> Yes. It's been reported stolen for a week, but since he's my boyfriend, I told him they not my boyfriend, but my ex. He's I have a restrain order. He won't leave me alone. >> Okay. So, he went to his mom's house. Where's his mom live? And got the gun. And then what what happened? Where did you guys go after that? Oh, you were that cold, but you were just >> back to when you say home, you you mean to your place at Kax. Okay. >> So, when you got back home, what happened? >> You were just beating the out of me. I've been getting beat up all week. I don't know how I'm alive. He's been strangling me to the point where I'm passing out. I have to put my thumbs up in the air to get him to stop choking me so I don't die. We were downtown. >> So, you were in the car >> right before we got here? >> Yes. >> Okay. Which way were you guys going? North and south? >> We were just coming down this street cuz he's headed back towards his mom's right now. >> Okay. So, he's going towards Lake Street. >> Yes. >> But he just shot at me. So, he threw me up the car. >> He shot at you while you were in the car? >> Where were you seated in the car? >> I was in the back seat on the left side behind his the driver's seat. Left. >> Yes. >> Left in the rear. Okay. And he was in the driver's seat. >> Yes. >> Was there anyone else in the vehicle? >> No. But if like if whenever he fired my car, there's literally a bullet hole in that car in the back right left side of the seat. >> What did he say before before shooting? >> He said he's going to kill me. He said he's going to kill my family. >> And so he fired a shot at you. >> Yes. He just tried to kill me. >> And so then you jumped out of the car. >> He threw me out. Got me. Thank you. How did he throw you out? >> He pushed me out of the vehicle and took my phone cuz I tried to get my phone. >> Was he driving or was the vehicle parked? >> He was driving. He threw me out the moving vehicle. >> So, he reached around while he was driving it. >> Yes. I had tried to reach for my phone again and when I was so I could call for help and as soon as I had my phone, he threw me out the vehicle and when I was unconscious and passed out, he took my phone and came and drove off to his mom's house. That's the only place he has in this world to go. He has nobody >> except for me as [ __ ] He uses me for my house and my car. >> He's really shitty. He's going to kill me. Like, and nobody finds him. I live here. This is my house. I should be able to go to my house. I don't even know how he got in my like I don't know how. After being treated at the hospital, the victim is interviewed by investigators who have been piecing together the timeline and building the case against the suspect. >> So, he drove you in by your arm and what did he do? >> Um, he just immediately started hitting me in my head >> with a closed fist or open. >> Yeah. >> Do you remember anything he was saying to you? >> No. Just like thought you were going to set me up in the head to kill you. You're going to die. Yeah. He had me convinced I was going to die for sure. I came in there, he basically just had like a whole collection of weapons. He had a knife. He had cords that he was ready to tie me up with. He had alcohol out cuz he said he was going to start me on fire. And he had his weapon in his club. >> He had his gun with him that time. >> Oh, wait. No, he didn't have it when he got there. He actually took me to his mom's house to go get it and then brought me back. That's why you got thrown off the next day. So, we'll get to that part. But he had like What kind of alcohol did he have? >> Um, just so you know, where you were rubbing alcohol. >> Yeah. >> And said he was going to light you on fire. >> Yeah. So, he got the pistol that night he went to his mom like the same night I came. He said, "You're going to go for a ride with me." >> Oh, you went >> the same night and got his pistol. >> Okay. So, did he um tie you up before you guys went for the ride or he was punching you? is punching him as well as me. >> What? How else did he assault you? >> Um, strangely strangely. >> Do you remember how he does that? >> Yeah. Just like make sure I'm on the ground. >> Okay. >> Strangely, >> like with his two hands? >> Yeah. >> And he pins you to the ground. And then >> what does he do with his hand? >> Everything. >> But yeah, as soon as you poured the alcohol, you act like you want to be on fire. So he did he bound you? No, he must not. He pulled all your clothes off first and then he wrapped your arms and your legs and you were >> I was I was just dropped in alcohol at that point. >> Yeah. >> And blood. There was blood leaking all over me. >> Okay. >> Okay. So you got you pinned down and are your hips like up or >> I'm just face down. >> You're just face down. Okay. >> I'm just like on the side of the mattress. My legs are on the ground. >> Okay. I don't know. Like cuz he never did that. I guess maybe afterwards he felt like a thing or had remorse cuz that's when he told me, "If you don't want to die, you're going to let me cut your eyebrows and your hair off." >> So that happened after the sexual assault. >> Now, um, were you assaulted more than once that night? >> No, that was the only time cuz after he made me shave my eyebrows or whatever, he said I was disgusting.
