In this incident, law enforcement had documented visible injury, fresh bleeding, and a direct and cooperative victim statement. Somebody who wanted to press charges. Even without the suspect's initial cooperation to provide some sort of statement, the totality of the circumstances gave these officers the probable cause necessary to determine who the primary aggressor was. Once the suspect starts displaying disorganized behavior, rapid agitation, talking to people who aren't there and emotional volatility, this becomes not only a criminal case, but a mental health safety issue as well. And with that kind of liability, law enforcement is required to take action. And there are wide variety of reasons why somebody like the suspect would display this kind of behavior. But due to the nature of the offenses committed, criminal custody takes priority over a standalone mental health detention. >> She was charged with domestic battery and two counts of aggravated battery to a peace officer.
