On February 19th, 2023, Patricia thought a trip to Ulta was a shopping spree, but it ended in a highstakes standoff. After getting busted for $700 in shoplifted goods, she decided that surrendering was optional. She didn't just resist. She [music] went for the officer's firearm in a desperate bid for freedom. Watch the video to see what actually happened. >> So many chances and I said, "Please don't try to run." I really try to run out. >> As soon as you walked up behind me, you tried to pee. >> I asked you if I could please use the restroom. I swear to you. No, I really got to go. Can you help quickly, please? >> Get back in the female just slipped her cuffs, reached through the back of my car, and got a handgun. It began as a routine retail arrest, the kind officers handled almost automatically. Patricia acted cooperatively, politely, and [music] anxiously like a drama queen. She played every damn card until she made the unthinkable, dangerous move that dragged the police into the most chaotic situation imaginable. >> Female has a gun. She's uncooperative. She's got a gun in the vestigule. Hey guys, she has a gun. >> She has a gun. Lock it down in there, please. >> What was that? >> She has a gun. Please lock it down in there. She slipped her cuffs after I put it in the back hatch and then reached through the back hatch and took it. >> Okay. I assume it's loaded one in the pipe, right? Yes. She still got handcuffs on. Uh, she slipped one hand. >> Things took a dark turn when she managed to slip her cuffs and grab the officer's gun. The moment was pure [music] chaos as the officer realized his weapon was now in the hands of a shoplifter. Suddenly, the store parking [music] lot turned into a tactical nightmare. >> Honor, >> she's uh she's got the pistol. I see the light on. I believe she just goes into the car. >> All right. I need one person here who's going to be giving us information. >> I I'll be here. sir. >> Shield. >> Stop. >> Shield. >> In the car. >> Drop the gun. >> TURN YOUR HANDS. >> DROP THE GUN. >> THE HANDS. Is there somebody you want us to call for you? >> Back up a little bit. >> Back up. Back up. Back up. >> Backing up. Tori, let's go, buddy. Patricia wasn't just armed. She was now trapped in the sallyport with a loaded handgun. The entire police department went into an immediate lockdown, turning the building into a [music] fortress. The tension in that room was thick. >> I got one. >> I got it. >> Being right here. Yep. >> Yep. >> Just be cognizant of >> Yep. >> Cockkins, do not >> pop up, buddy. Don't >> I've got long gun above you. >> Take the wall. >> Who do you want us to call? >> I want to breathe and I'll talk you guys out there. Open the door. >> What's your name? I want some air and a moment to just breathe air. You guys are recording this. I know. I want some air. >> Her negotiation began with a stolen pistol. She acted like she was the victim of a stuffy room rather than a self-made crisis. Officers tried [music] to stay calm, but it was clear she was just stalling for time. Her logic was as twisted [music] as her original plan to steal perfume. >> And then I will get off the car and let you take me. I just want to sit there for a second and breathe without having to feel the pressure of this plane on me, please. >> Okay, I'll get I'm going to walk over there with my gun and you're going to end up having to shoot me. None of us want to hurt you. Okay. The only way that we can work with you is if you drop that gun out of the door. >> I'm going to displace back. Come in through the backside of the conics area and come in. So, we have somebody behind you also. >> All right. You're going to have a 40 with me. He's cocking through the pepper ball right here. >> Uh, you're going to have a 40 or you going to have a lethal with you? >> Yep, I'm going to have a lethal with you. Do you want me to take Kubak since he's a play right now? >> What's your first name, ma'am? >> Somebody who's not in training. >> Okay, not a problem. Now, >> put the dash on. Gun on the dash. Now, >> open the door. >> While negotiators worked to calm Patricia and convince her to give up the gun, officers inside the building quietly brought in armed units through highse security side entrances. Because the situation was serious, they also had to relocate several detainees from their cells to another secure area to maintain control. Zabra 47, David 7. >> Tell him's outside. >> Awesome. Tell him to head over to the uh >> uh to our back docks. >> 87, I need you to head to the back dock. >> And then he's going to be meeting an ambulance there. >> You're going to be meeting an ambulance there. >> All right. So, she's going to they're going to come in from there. They're going to come down here. Then she's going to go that direction. Okay. Come on this way. >> Right over here. >> Shooting stands behind the car. >> And I've got Deputy Brown there as well for now. My name's Matt. What's your name? >> Bravo 6. I'm inside of booking. I have the car in my sights with the rifle. >> Do you have any name that I can call you? Doesn't even have to be your real name, but just talk to me. >> What's your name? >> I cannot open that door. >> Sit over there. >> I can let you walk out this door. open. >> So, they're going to open this bay right here. >> Okay. >> Um, if you guys want to >> go through this entrance here. >> All right. Thanks. >> Cuz the rest of the building's locked down right now. >> Yeah. >> Please step out of the car with nothing in your hands. >> It is not a possibility. >> There's a 40. That's pretty simple at the car right now. outside the booking. >> If you throw the gun from the car, we can open that door. >> Put it out of the car. We'll let you drive out. >> Do that right there. >> Okay. Step out of the vehicle. >> I want you to go outside there. You're going to open the door. See, >> she has the gun again. >> You guys, you see what you wish? I'm giving you my word. >> I don't believe you now. You're just fine. >> If you surrender the gun, we will walk you out this door. >> No, that's not what you said. You said if I put my gun out, then you open this door. Open this gun. This door and I will throw my gun out. >> Actually, I said if you throw the gun out of the car. >> No, I said I put on the dash. I open the door and then I'll throw it. >> She got the gun to her head. >> Come out here. >> Uh, she's got a She's got a scan. Okay, come on out >> quickly, please. As fast as you can that way. >> Keep going. >> She still has the pistol in her hand. She's held it to her head several times. >> Um, she's made statements about um, she's telling my mom that I loved her. >> Um, she wants us to open this door. >> If you don't work with us at all, >> which I assume is her going to be trying to blow it out of here. >> They're coming out the door. You going to be cool with me for the walk? >> Okay. >> I appreciate it. >> Thank you. I appreciate it. >> Patricia became more and more stubborn about her demands, forcing [music] officers to seriously consider stepping in and pulling her out of the vehicle. The tension kept building as patients ran thin and it was clear the situation was [music] heading toward direct action which unfolded shortly after. >> He's on lockdown and they will not open that door. But we have this door open and if you surrender the gun, we will let you walk outside to take you into custody. >> It cannot be opened. >> Walk outside. I will shut off the car and walk out this door. You open it. Okay. >> I'm behind you. >> This is the only door that we can open. >> I don't believe you. >> What can I do to get your compliance besides opening that door? Because I cannot do that. >> I can't. Please let me help you. >> We'll pull a car right there and I'll get in the back seat outside that door when you guys back up. >> We have a car right outside the door. >> Okay. Well, >> come walk out to it. >> Back out and walk out. >> We can't right now. >> That door is the comm's team with the female. So, let them do the talking. >> If they initiate, >> if we hear over the radio that we can throw pepper in there, then we'll do something. But at this point, we're going to stand. We're So, they have pepper and 40 on the outside, too. >> My hands are kind of tied where I'm at, ma'am. >> Hey, let me bump off one of the pistols. >> Can we bounce somebody with a >> Put the gun down. >> Put the gun down. >> No. Um, get the gun down. >> Can you put both your hands up? >> Can you just put your hands up so we can keep you safe? >> Let me walk out of there. Move away from the door. >> Okay, put your hands up and start walking out the door. >> Away from the door. I can't. >> Please surrender the gun so we can work with you. >> You need to do it. >> You put the gun down so we can get you out of here. >> Ask you to push out your >> left hand. >> If you drop the gun out of the car, we'll back up >> and we'll walk you out of this door. >> First you need to do is drop the gun out of the car. Never ever going to happen. >> Said she's never going to drop again. >> Hey, can somebody get a bulldo ear plug here? >> Hey, where's your rifle? Is it in the rack? >> It's in the rack when I left. And since she was able to access it, she'd be able to get it out of the rack. >> Okay. Is it a Is it a full auto? >> No. It's a 223 standard patrol rifle. There's SWAT armor in the back and a 40 and a pepper ball, but she hasn't accessed that trunk. >> Okay. Is there a Do you guys run full autos on your SWAT? >> No. >> Rig? >> No, it's just a standard 223. >> Okay. All right. Thank you. >> Throw the gun from the car. Do it now. >> Stop asking me. Open these doors. >> I'm not asking you. I'm telling you to. >> Everybody on opse secure. Obse secure. Cameras are on. >> Can you open the door or can you get out of the door? >> All right. I'm ready. >> Come on. >> All right. Give that to me again. >> You were out a few minutes ago and nothing happened to you. So do it again. >> Nothing happened to you. Officers planned to give negotiations a few more tries, hoping words [music] might still work. But patience was running out fast. You could feel it coming. The calm before the storm. Once those last attempts failed, all restraint was gone, and the situation was seconds away from exploding. >> Direct line of communication. She's about um 15 ft inside from this door. She's got the door open to the patrol car. >> Do we know her name? She's a Jane Doe booking. >> She said she got picked up on a theft ticket. >> I don't have my body cam, so everyone has. >> Yeah, everyone. >> What do you need, sir? Rita, >> take over negotiation. >> Hey, they call Rita's up. Rita's up. Okay. >> Ma'am, my name is Rita. I'm with the sheriff's department. Let me help you out of here today. >> Ma'am, I need you to come out of the car with nothing in your hands. I want to make sure that you're safe today. I'm going to go I'm going to take Fort Collins channel and we're going to start chopping around. >> You got to tie it all on her. >> Yeah, I can see her bobbing around through the windshield from here. >> Would it be better if this were pulled up just a little bit more so you can go on the the trunk instead of the roof? >> Probably. >> Okay. >> All right. Well, let's get out here and get a cigarette. >> You know I can't walk a cigarette into you. You know I can't walk a cigarette into you. >> I can get you a cigarette out here, but I can't get you one in there. >> I don't have control of that. >> Can you get out of the car so we can talk? >> What kind of cigarette you want? >> Dude, can you start going through the building? Find some cigarettes. >> He's got them here. My >> We got cigarettes. You got cigarettes? >> Yeah. We just want to get a >> Which one's yours? >> You have no cross >> to the female that's in the's police car. I do not want to see you get injured. I do not want to see you injure yourself. Will you please pick up the mic and speak with me? >> Hey, if she's going to come out, we'll let her smoke it. Sig, tell her >> you come out. We'll let you smoke. >> They're getting They're getting one lit for you. Hold on. >> She's got to come out here to smoke it because you can't in there because of the gas tanks. Are you cool with us throwing an unlit one in? >> I mean, will you smoke them away from Try not to set off all this stuff? >> Unlit one. >> Yeah. All right. Unlit one. >> All right. We're going to throw this thing as best we can. I don't know how well cigarettes throw. >> There's a reason I'm not a baseball player, so >> just leave the gun on the deal. Leave the gun on the dash. Okay. where you are. Okay, I appreciate that. >> The negotiators even tried to throw an unlit cigarette to her, which felt more like a circus act than a police procedure. She was so focused on her nicotine fix that she almost forgot she was surrounded by a soda team. It was a bizarre moment of humanity in the middle of a very dangerous and highstakes criminal standoff. >> Do the Sally port door like the team from it. >> That sally port door. >> Yeah, the far one. The far one. Did you move the car at all? >> I think she did cuz I think that's how it ended up there. So, >> push up. >> So, just eyes on. Let me know what it looks like for as far as deploying. >> Yep. We got good eyes. Close it back. We've got that door open. All right. Get set up where you can get >> Yep. I got it, bud. Got it. Okay. Is she in the car? >> Yep. To the left. Can we get on the left side of this >> so that we're not cover? >> Yeah. Go down. Just keep doing what we ask. You're doing good. >> She starts the vehicle. >> Moving. Vehicle's moving. You're good. You're good. >> Get that shield back up. Get that shield. I got it. >> You got all good. She's not going to be able to come through these doors. >> We're having trouble hearing you. And moving further away doesn't help. >> I'm having a hard time hearing you. Moving further away doesn't help me. Help you. >> Will you pick up? >> Well, how can I get you a cigarette if you're not talking to me? >> Ask her to pick up the radio. Ask her if she'll pick up the radio if we talk to her on the radio. >> Can you pick up the radio if we talk to you on that? >> What do we think? >> What's that? >> All right. Well, we got to talk through this so we can get you a cigarette. >> My boss is concerned. >> It's true. We fored her last time. object to the car. >> And you can end this by coming out without the gun. That's how that's the quickest way to end. >> The quickest way to end this is to come out without a gun so I can get you a cigarette. >> All right. Well, we're working on getting a cigarette just >> Well, I'm working on getting you a lit one. Okay. >> My boss is concerned cuz there's fuel tanks in there. They don't want us lighting anything in there. >> The car has a half gauge, right? >> I don't know. They It may have a full gauge. >> I can ask. It look like a half page or full page. Can you tell? >> I think it's a full page. >> Can't tell. Doesn't look like it doesn't look like there's a divider in between. >> That's nice. >> The police had handed her chance after chance to step out and keep [music] things calm, but she ignored every peaceful option like it was background noise. Talking didn't work. Patience ran dry. Officers were done whispering and fully prepared to go in loud, fast, and without asking nicely anymore. >> Some more, please. Caukins, is she mad at you? >> No, I think she's just situation. >> She thinks we promised her a good cigarette. >> She thinks we promised to open a door, which nobody ever did. I think she's just >> No. And you're ready for bang. We're going to display pepper on that. Ready for >> You guys ready? Stand by for bang. Yep. Bang. >> Bang. >> Bang. >> Bang's gone. >> Okay. Okay. Here's Bang away. Bang out. Gun's still on the dash. >> Car's on. >> Turn the car on. >> Go ahead. >> Misfire. Misire. It's a misfire. Windows. >> There's some good shots in there. >> Turn on the car on, >> ma'am. They're just trying to let you know they're serious. They're just trying to let you know they're serious. >> I want to work with you on this, but we only have so much time. >> Cars are in reverse. It's going backwards. Losing sight. >> I barely got her. >> No, she's moving forward. >> Get that. Well, if you keep doing this, >> step out of the vehicle. Ma'am, please get out of the vehicle. I I'm begging you. They're going to keep using force until you cooperate. Please. I want to get you that cigarette. >> She has the gun. >> Guns to her head. >> Ma'am, please don't hurt yourself. >> Hold on. The way she's pointing the gun, it's like parallel to her head. >> Ma'am, don't please don't. Please. We We want to help you. Put the gun down. Would you start by putting the gun back on the dash? It makes me really nervous when you have that gun to your head. I I don't want you to hurt yourself. >> I can tell you're really desperate for that cigarette. >> Don't pointing the gun at herself and [music] making suicide threats only bought her a little time. Armed teams had already mapped out a way to force her out, and it wasn't gentle or forgiving. The sympathy window closed fast. What came next wasn't mercy. It was a calculated nononsense plan [music] to end the standoff. >> That 40 rear window the rear window. >> It won't go through it. >> You guys can deploy gas from that side. >> There you go. >> You want a triple chaser? >> Yep. >> Ma'am, I still want to work with you on this. doing well if you keep doing this. Step out of the vehicle, >> ma'am. Please step out of the vehicle. I'm begging you. They're going to keep using force until you cooperate. Hey Coleman, just so you know, she has like a bag or something in her left hand, which she keeps covering her face with. >> Thank you for putting the gun on the dash. I really appreciate that. >> I will throw the keys outside of the freaking door. You throw me in the cigarette. >> Ma'am, I understand you're having trouble trusting us. >> So, ma'am, I want to show you some good faith. Okay, then throw the keys out and I'll throw in the whole pack. >> So, these guys are set up here. We're getting ready to coordinate the pinch with the bearcats. We're following up behind those bangs. September time for the crack of the cat. >> You want to get on the >> Yeah, get on the cat. They're probably going in. >> Yeah, >> ma'am. See, >> I've lit the cigarette. >> Okay, I've lit the cigarette. If you throw the keys to us, I will throw the cigarette to you. It's burning as we speak. >> Car's on. >> Okay, ma'am. That's what they're worried about. They don't want the car on with the cigarette. >> Car's moving. >> She's backing up. >> I just talked to my boss. If you leave the keys on the roof, I will throw the cigarette in. Okay. One minute. Okay. [snorts] You see it? >> I'm going to throw it as hard as I can. >> It didn't go very far. Okay. >> The final moments sat in heavy silence. No [music] jokes, no patience left to stretch, just measured steps. Every bad choice she made came back to corner her one by one. Control didn't get taken from her. It leaked out slowly the same way it came in. Everybody wants you to get out of here safe. We want to get you that cigarette. But the problem is the last time we did this, I did what I said I would do and I throwed you and I threw you the cigarette. I ma'am look >> ma'am ma'am these guys are no GO Keep going with the passenger side. >> The gun is to her head. >> I got shields. >> Okay, let's put back. Hey, >> the gun The incident left officers shocked but lucky [music] to be safe. One stolen gun inside a police station caused chaos that no one expected. Dozens of officers had to respond to a risk that [music] could have ended badly. It showed how fast things go wrong when someone refuses to follow rules. She really outdid herself. Drop the gun. >> Drop the gun. >> Drop the gun. >> Drop the gun. Put the gun down and we'll give you a cigarette. >> That's not negotiable. >> We'll bring you a cigarette pack. We can throw a [ __ ] of the whole cover behind you. Just so you know. All right. >> Put the gun down. the gun. >> Shut the gun down. >> I can't see her. >> I can't see her. I can't see her. >> I can't see her. Hands up. I'm already on the ground. I'm already [screaming] >> You're making it hurt me. All right, let's clear this. >> Every move she made pushed her further from any clean exit. Instead [music] of slowing down, she doubled down on bad decisions like it was a talent. She proved a hard truth. Some people don't need enemies because they sabotage their own lives just fine. >> I'm sitting down. I don't have nothing. I don't have any. >> I sat down before you guys attacked me. I didn't I turned myself in and put the guns down. You guys still My arm. My arm. My arm. My arm. I got shot. Are >> you thinking about trying to get away? >> No, I just started having a panic attack because he wouldn't open the window to let me have air and I like started hyperventilating and then when I got there and he like tossed the gun in the back. So the thing was like right there. And so I like slipped my hand out of my cuff and and got it, but like it was just really me freaking out and having a panic attack at the same time and thinking about going to do a lot of years in jail. Like it wasn't his fault. I just it was it was it was me, you know. So but he did everything he was right. So >> he did everything right. Um did he open the door to come get you at any time? He went to come get me. >> I mean, that's >> But as soon as I got it, I held it up to my head and he took off in sight. So, I didn't say anything to him. I just said I mean, I I was just like I put the gun to my head. I think that he just saw it to my head, you know, and then I don't think he was going to stand there in front of me with a gun and nor was he going to open the door to let me out with a gun. So he just retreated, which is I mean it was smart. It was he did what he was supposed to do. >> So what happened? >> I feel super bad. I kind of I don't want him to get in trouble for my I just he he wasn't at fault. That was on me. Yeah. Pretty much all I when I knew they weren't going to open the cell port for me and I wasn't going to get some fresh air. I just was thinking I'll have one last cigarette before throw my life away. >> Did they ask you to do anything? Of course they asked me to do they asked me all the things that they were supposed to and I just wasn't going to even think about complying until I smoked a cigarette cuz >> What kind of things did they ask you to do that you weren't going to >> turn myself in, put the gun down, throw the keys out. They asked me everything. Every every single thing that you could think of to try to end it, they asked me and I just wasn't going to do it until I got a cigarette. >> Were you using drugs or today? >> No, I didn't. >> Totally sober. I'm to I've been sober since I got out of jail. Yeah. I just for >> I just freaked out. I just had a I just know what I'm looking at [clears throat] and I don't I did when I was 16 I got arrested. 17 I went to prison and I did 15 years till was 32, you know. >> And I uh >> During the interview, Patricia nearly wiped her hands clean trying to deny any real motive for holding an officer hostage [music] and pin everything on her anxiety. That excuse fell apart fast. The story didn't line up. The actions were too extreme. And her last attempt at rewriting reality only made her look more calculated, not confused. >> I just was I didn't want to grow out there. I really thought I could. >> Hello, >> babe. I resisted arrest and I got the cop's gun and went on a standoff and the dog bit me and I got shot with those pellet guns like three different times. I just got out of the hospital. >> Where? Where? Are you serious? >> Yeah. >> Hey. >> Yeah. >> And where are you at now? >> They have me. I'm here at the jail, but I they asked me if I would talk to them about what happened. Yeah, I got to they said I have to wrap it up right now cuz I got to do this interview and it's getting late, babe. But I'll call you as soon as I get into the jail. [snorts] Okay, >> I'm going to have the phone next to you. Write down the number, baby. I love you. >> I love you, too. He's going to write it down for me. [snorts] >> I'm going to be here for you. Don't worry, no matter what. >> I know, babe. I love you. [gasps] The lesson [snorts] here is clear. Don't mess with what isn't yours, especially a cop's gear. Patricia's impulsive choice turned her world upside down. Now she gets all the air she wants, but only in a prison yard. A few stolen items came at the cost of her entire freedom. Patricia had existing warrants and was charged with firstdegree assault on a police officer, secondderee kidnapping, aggravated robbery, firstderee aggravated motor vehicle theft, disarming [music] a peace officer, criminal mischief valued between 5,000 and $20,000 and resisting arrest.
