Welcome back everyone. Today's video comes to us from Cedar Key, Florida. In Florida, we have a species In Florida, we have a species of shark that's commonly mistaken as a baby hammerhead and it's called a bonnethead shark. These sharks are much smaller than hammerhead sharks and their head does have a hammer shape, but it's much more rounded and much more narrow than what you would see on a hammerhead. Anyways, a few years back sharks saw a sharp increase in regulations and now anglers are required to have a permit just to target them from the shoreline. Anyways, several years back sharks saw a sharp increase in regulations in Florida. If you intend to target them from the shoreline, anglers must now possess a shore-based shark fishing permit. There are currently 15 species of sharks that anglers are permitted to keep and eight of them have no minimum size limit, the bonnethead being one of them. Anglers are permitted to keep only one shark per person and if you happen to be on a vessel, you're only allowed to have two per vessel, but that one per person rule still applies. With those regulations in mind, let's get into today's video. >> Saw you pull me. >> Yes, sir. I saw you walk away, so. >> Yeah. >> Do any fishing today? >> Yeah. >> Yeah, you got any fish yet? >> Yes, I do. >> Yeah, what'd you get? >> Um, I guess uh catfish and small Do you want to uh small fish? >> Small fish? >> Yeah, some small. >> I got you. Do you have uh your fishing license? >> Yes, I do. >> All right, cool. >> But uh you can check it through my driver's license, right? >> I can, yeah, but you don't have it on you. >> Yes, I do. >> Or do you have it on you? Got you, okay. Just check that real quick, all right. And do you have any uh fish in the cooler? >> Yes, I do. >> Okay, cool. Oh, bonnetheads. So, those are uh the sharks. >> Uh can I keep it or not? >> Uh you can. So, we got All right. Um, you can only just the catfish, yeah. You can only keep one of them now. >> Okay, can I throw it away or >> Uh don't throw it yet, but choose the uh the biggest and keep the biggest and put the other two up here. I'll let you uh decide which one's the biggest. >> This one the biggest. But uh if you want to I can throw it away because I I don't eat it. I just use it like like photo laser you know. >> Yeah, now I got you. Just go and put that right back in there. All right, I'm going to take these real quick and I'm going to look up your license. You go ahead and keep eating, you're good. >> What's baby hammerheads? >> Uh they're the uh pretty much the cousin of them. So they're called bonnet heads. So the bonnet has more of a round whereas the uh the hammer is going to be the hammer. >> Oh, okay. >> So yeah, they're just um only allowed one. He's at three. So they're biting today. Got check this. The issue is is you're only allowed one. >> To be honest, I didn't know that. You got regulations to be honest. >> So they don't have a size, right? So there's a there's an app that's called Fish Rules and it shows you what it is, right? So this is a bonnet head shark. You could see with the pictures it matches up to you know what's in the picture. So open season, no size limit, but you can have one and basically one. So you can only have one shark per day, right? Um so across the board one shark. So now you have three. Um >> I didn't know at all. So I'm really sorry, yeah. >> I got you. >> Because normally I got catfish and I just put you know, I don't eat it. I just put it like because I I'm I I'm okay. I I didn't know the really regulation we have to follow to be honest. >> Right. No, I get you. >> Yeah, yeah. I was wondering if you could you forgive me or >> I I I personally forgive you, right? I I have no quarrels with you. I didn't know will never be a valid excuse. Anglers are required to understand the rules and regulations before going out and if you're not sure, throw it back. You um have you been had an issue with us before or not? >> No, no. >> No issue, okay. >> I'm very clean because I'm I'm working for I'm scientist, you know, I'm foreigner like I come to you at the work like science. >> Oh, okay. >> And fishing for for you know enjoy the whole time. >> right. >> And sometimes because sometimes I eat, sometimes I just dig like you would like for for to like put in the under tree. >> Mhm. >> To like photo photo like >> Use as fertilizer, yeah. Mhm. >> Uh but I I know that I I have to say violate violate regulation to be honest. I I know that now you told me. >> Right. >> that and then next time I I never do that. >> Next time you'll know. I know, I get that. Um unfortunately with it cuz they're they're dead now, I do have to address it, okay? Um so I will be citing you for having uh over the bag limit of sharks, all right? Um so I just got to print that out real quick and then I'll explain the rest to you, okay? >> All right, so just give me a couple seconds here. Okay. Let me give you back your ID >> Thank you. >> forget about it. All right, so our two copies are the same, right? And this is your copy, this one's my copy. Um so what it is is the citation here is bag limits, >> Okay. >> right? The bag limits for sharks, you're only allowed one per person, right? So it says it all right there. Again, this is your copy, says it right there. This is the phone number um and then this is the courthouse. >> Okay. >> So what it is is it is uh it's a sizable offense, that's actually a criminal violation. >> Oh. >> So it is a it's a second degree misdemeanor, all right? So what happens is you don't have any priors with FWC, right? So normally it goes uh to Gainesville, they look over it and they usually turn it to a fine amount. I can't promise that they will, but usually they turn it just into some money. Um okay, so >> Is is there any do they put me in in the jail or something like that or >> In in the jail? In the jail? >> Yeah. >> So it it could be, right? If I if I sense you were a poacher and I wanted to arrest you, I could take you to jail. >> Oh. >> So, this is very serious, right? Um I'm not doing that. You're a good guy. You just were keeping fish. I get it. But, you got to follow the rules, right? >> Okay. >> Um so, all I need from you right here is just a signature. >> Okay. >> It's not an admission of guilt, just saying that uh you basically you'll take care of it. >> Okay. >> Um and what happens is within 30 days, they should contact you. But, if you don't hear anything within 3 weeks, call that number, or reach out to Bronson here. >> here 3 weeks or something? Can I write uh which one? Which one for me? >> This one's for me. This one's for you. >> Okay. Can I write here 3 2 weeks 3 weeks? >> Yep, that's fine. That way you're staying on top of it, so they know that that you're paying attention. >> call this number in 3 weeks, right? >> Yep, 3 weeks. If you don't hear If If they don't reach out to you, give them a call. >> Okay. >> All right. And then >> Uh and and other thing is is that because I actually I don't know this rule against me to buy a house or not, because I apply funding. >> No, it shouldn't. It I I don't know for certain on I can't say 100%, but no, it shouldn't cause you an any issue like that. >> Because I apply for mortgage, you know. >> Right. >> Is something wrong, and I they >> No, I mean I mean people that go to jail and come out, they can apply for houses, too. It doesn't shut you down. >> Because I If If in process, it's closing to close approach to closing closing day. >> Right, right. >> And I don't know if because of this and uh because I already deposit some money, you know, 20K already. If something happen, I lose all money, you know. >> I got you. >> And because I don't know regulation here, whether or not this one against me about buy house or something, and then >> It probably won't. I don't I don't foresee it being there. Um just, you know, like I said, talk with them on it. I'll do my report. You were good with me, so odds are they will just turn it to like, you know, a couple hundred dollars, and then you just pay that, and you're done. >> Normally, may I ask you a question? Normally, they say they call me, they send a check to me, or what so they do? >> So, uh they'll reach out to you. Like I said, if you don't hear anything within 3 weeks, reach out to them, but more than likely they'll send it in the mail. >> Okay. Okay. >> So, they'll send it to this address, right? So, that address is good? >> my address. >> Okay. And then they've got your phone number, too, which is right there. So, they can call you, as well, and they'll talk with you on that. Um let me get you a fishing regulations magazine. So, that way you know which ones you can have. Okay. So, yeah. It has all the the fish and stuff. >> Okay. >> Most of them. Not all of them, but most of them. >> Mhm. >> And then here's your sharks and everything. So, there's there's your bonnethead. >> Okay. >> Um So, just, you know, use this to know what you're catching, right? You catch a lot of these, redfish, black drum. You catch a lot of those here. >> But then my which how many you know how many I should keep or >> Yep. So, it says right here. So, um spotted seatrout actually Sorry, wrong side. Underneath it. Underneath the fish underneath it. So, >> Mhm. >> 15 in. Um and then it tells you how many you can have per day. >> Okay. Mhm. >> Right? So, we're the north central Actually, it doesn't say what it is. Hm. 1 second. Let me check that real quick. All right. So, yeah. They've got us in the Just cuz this is a common one, I'll just circle it for you. So, five per day. >> Okay. >> It's for me? >> That's for you. Yep. >> Okay. Thank you so much, sir. >> So, um okay. Any other questions? >> No. No. >> Okay. Just going forward, I mean, you can keep fishing. You have your license. You're good to go. >> Okay. >> Um just going forward, make sure you only keep what you can keep. >> this regulation. Okay. Okay. I got it, sir. >> All right. >> Thank you so much, sir. >> All right. It was nice meeting you. And like I said, I forgive you. I have no issues with you. I just have to address the violation. >> I understand. So, thank you so much, sir. >> Yep. I'm going to I'm going to toss the sharks real quick and back into the water. Okay. I'll see you later. In the end, the angler was charged with two misdemeanors for harvesting or landing more than one shark per day. Unfortunately, despite an exhaustive search, I'm unable to locate any court records associated with this case. Now, the incident took place in Levy County, so I checked their courthouse and there's no sign and I made my way to the neighboring counties. I went ahead and checked the courthouse over in the Gainesville area and I couldn't find it there, either. Now, the case not showing up could be a clerical error by the courts, maybe a mistyped name, but it could also be the officer filed it in Gainesville, but this took place in Levy County. So, unfortunately, we're ending the video without a full recap on what happened, but we hope you enjoyed it.
