A young pregnant mother leaves a grocery store. Moments later, she's shot by police in her car. You medic. >> On August 24th, 20123, 21-year-old Tequia Young was killed outside a Kroger store in Blendin Township, Ohio. What began as a suspected shoplifting call ended in a fatal police shooting. Police officers were already in the parking lot when a store employee reported that a woman had stolen bottles of liquor. They approached a black Lexus parked in a handicapped space with no license plate. Inside sat Tea Young, pregnant, and a mother of two. One officer stood by her window. The other, officer Connor Grub, positioned himself in front of the car. When Tequia started the vehicle, Grub fired a single shot through the windshield, hitting her in the chest. >> 29 375A 375. >> What's that? >> Female is hallucinating. >> Hey, stop. They're asking for assistance. >> Traffic. >> Shots fired. >> Where is it? I copy medic you medic. >> Nothing right now. >> Trying to clarify. Get a hold of 270. 271. >> Okay. What's that? >> So, we're just unlocking this old lady's car and uh manager came running out. The lady next to us went running in this car. Manager comes running out and goes, "Officer, officer, she just stole stuff and this other person just stole stuff." And so, we're beating on her window. >> We're trying to get to her. She's going to want to stay longer. >> Yep. Yep. Yep. >> All right. Um, if you're able to get Scotty Hasbro, if you're able to just grab like a makeshift crime scene log and start jotting down names for me, I'd appreciate it. >> Thank you. >> Whatever I can do to help you. >> Anybody uh help me out? Help me out here. So, um, if we could extend this scene back to that other stop sign. The shot was fired probably somewhere in here. We could try to find a, um, a shell casing. >> So, um, yeah, just extend it out to this stop sign. So, she was parked like in this handicap spot. >> Somebody doing the >> um >> crime scene. >> Uh, I got uh what's his name? One of your deputies on it. >> So, what's that? I'm okay. Yeah. Um and then over to one of these. >> Officers and a nearby doctor tried to save her, but Tequia and her unborn baby were pronounced dead at the hospital. Body cam footage showed a tote bag full of liquor in her car, and surveillance video appeared to show her taking bottles from the store before leaving. So um where he should be so >> I don't know was involved what they made a phone call already >> who did if somebody else was involved in this they probably already made a phone call to their peoples >> so they'll be here eventually maybe. >> Yeah. Yeah. You said there was another person associated >> supposedly. Yeah. So, never saw them. Just we were right next to this lady's car. So, just self, >> I guess. How did you come to find us? Like, where where were you at? >> I was in the store shopping and I heard some heard the sound and then uh I when I stepped over, you know, one of the employees said somebody, you know, um had an accident. So, then I came out and that's when I started. >> And then you saw us trying to start the CPR and >> Okay. Yeah. Everything's I really appreciate you. Thank you, sir. >> What can we do to help, man? >> Um I wish I knew. I'm uh I'm involved myself. So, uh just trying to be cautious about what I touch, I want other people to be uh involved. Not that I know of right now. Um my chief's running around. There's some some folks they're going to be like as people are wanting to leave, go collect information. Um if there is like any onlookers you want to approach and go like, "Hey, do you see anything? Get some contact info." square him up on your camera um so we can get back in touch with him and then I think funnel everybody out like that that way. >> Okay. >> Um so you have officers with >> this is our one officer was on the scene. >> Okay. >> All right. >> Did you have traffic for him? >> [ __ ] >> No, just as soon as he's >> So he'll be obviously witness officer. We want to get him with one of the attorneys as well cuz BCI will probably want to us or is it BCI? >> BCI. Well, no. ECI will probably do. >> So, is going to double, >> right? >> So, I'm going to run point on this side. I'll egress over to senior officer. Make sure they're taken care of. [Applause] >> At first, police withheld the officers names using Marcy's law, claiming they were potential victims of assault. Almost a year later, on August 13th, 2024, officer Connor Grub was charged with murder, manslaughter, and assault. A minute-long encounter in a parking lot ended two lives and changed many others.
