Eastbound Solen Road. Eastbound Solen Road is taking off on me. >> The deputy initiates a traffic stop after discovering that this car is stolen. But as he continues the pursuit, he doesn't know the violent criminal history of the suspects or just how horrifying this chase is about to become. >> Good hit. Crash out. Crash out. It's around 2:40 p.m. on December 3rd, 2021, when this Solen Police patrol officer notices a blue Ford Fusion in Solen, Ohio. Something about the vehicle makes him suspicious enough to run a random registration check, which reveals that it was stolen at gunpoint just a day earlier during an aggravated robbery in Cleveland. But as the patrol officer initiates a traffic stop, he doesn't know that this is going to lead to devastating consequences. But be advised that it was pink. >> Eastbound Solen Road. Eastbound Solen Road taking off on me. Call Batley build. Speed 60. All right, we're in Bentley mode now. Uh we're going to be coming to Can here in a second. All right, he's road eastbound continuing into looks like they'll chase him out of the city. He's pretty far ahead now. Probably going to be coming up to the Citadel Apartments. I just lost him going around the bend road going into uh Sugar Falls. There's a friendly little car up here, too. I'm going to terminate for now. Marlin Hayes, who is driving, and 20-year-old Rantel Parks, who is in the passenger seat. While the patrol officer has lost sight of the vehicle for now, what he doesn't know yet is that both suspects have a telling criminal history. J. Marlin was caught distributing drugs at 18 while both J Marlin and Rontel were involved in another car theft just 4 days earlier on November 29th when they threatened a vehicle owner with a firearm, demanded her wallet, and drove away in her car. And yet, what they have done to the owner of the vehicle they are currently driving or the chaos they are about to unleash is still something no one anticipates. Now, [music] as more officers in the area are alerted to the vehicle sighting, they began making attempts to stop the suspects in their tracks. still in general area. If you guys just want to get on these main roads in case it comes back in, be in position of stick. As Jay Marlin swerve to avoid the stopsticks, he crashed into a white truck carrying an elderly couple and struck another van. Now, as responding officers do their best to assist the victims of the crash, along with Jay Marlin and Rantel, they are about to witness the full impact of the choice this teen has made, leaving several people injured and shaken. >> Are you hurt anywhere or just bleeding? >> Okay, just lean against the car for me so you don't get dizzy. >> I'm okay. >> Okay. >> Don't move. >> I'm not going to move. He's got worse injuries. >> All right, step up, man. >> Get out. >> Where's that gun, man? >> Here. If you hop out, I'll get it. I'll keep cover. >> I don't see it. I must have bounced. >> Can you step out? >> Which one? >> Cover him. I'm going to see if I can get him out. Cover him. There's a gun in the car, so keep your gun on him. >> Okay. >> He's cuffed, but >> I'm going to try to help him out of the car cuz he asked if I could help him climb out. What's your name? >> What's your name? >> What? >> Montel. >> Ron, you're going to be all right, man. >> Paramedics are here. >> Do you think you can move on? >> I can't I can't pull you out. I'm just going to hurt you more. Let the fire department come and cut this open. They're going to cut this open. Just relax. Okay. Just breathe in nice and slow. Oh, >> he could get out. He Roy just told me to cover him. So, >> yeah, cuz I >> We got We got you. >> His leg was all folded up. He can't get out either. >> I get it. But no matter what, the fire department's going to have to come out. Did we get the gun out yet or no? >> No. Okay. >> No, we don't know where it's at. >> All right. Keep your keep your hands out passenger side. >> While the two victims, 89year-old Norman Schultz and his wife, 85-year-old Sally Schultz, remain the top priority to provide urgent medical care, officers turn their attention to rescuing the two trapped suspects from the car. But eventually, one of them will uncover a harrowing detail about the car theft that will immediately change their approach to securing J Marlin and Rel. They got one. It's in there. There's a gun on the floorboard. >> They said it's on the floorboard. >> I mean, >> probably not at this point. Um, >> unless you guys want to check your area, see if there's any guns anywhere cuz we I think we have one now. >> Okay. Um, >> you think they were pitching them out the windows? >> They could have been. You said you saw one, right? A gun. >> You saw them pitching out the window. >> Oh, I didn't. No, I didn't see them pitching out the window. He said according according to Roy, he said there was one in the car. >> Okay. >> There's no getting that open. His other's leg is folded up to his chest. >> I'm not pulling him out now anyway. So, I can go back to that squad. >> Oh, I didn't know his leg was folded up. I was going to try to pull him through the windshield, but his leg is like pulled up to his chest. It's broken. I'm sure. I just hope the other people aren't too bad. I think these guys are probably going to be all right. >> I don't even know here, too. What's your name, sir? >> Norm. >> I got him random. >> You got his ID. Did you get his wife's? >> No. Sally. >> Oh, yeah. She's pretty banged up. He's the owner of the van truck. >> Wife's name Sally. >> Sally. Yeah. >> You're okay? >> Yeah. There's a seat belt like I'm choking up. But >> yeah. Do you want to have them uh look you over real quick? >> I mean, I don't think I need to go to the hospital or nothing, but >> there's a lot of adrenaline going right now. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Yeah. I'm shaking. >> Yeah. They're seriously injured and they're seriously injured, but screw them for now. As soon as I get somebody free, I'll have them take a look at you. You all right, Rantel? You still breathing okay? Talk to me, man. >> Okay. I know. >> They're going to They got to cut you out, though. You're You're trapped up cuz of the dashboard folded in on you. They got to cut you out. All right. >> They're going to take the top off the car probably and cut you out. >> No. No. >> They They got to They got to do their thing, man. And they got to fire up the jaws of life and cut you out. Just keep your hands out here for me. >> Can I get some? >> Go ahead. >> I didn't see the gun in the floorboard. >> Okay. So, it's either somewhere still inside that car or it came out. >> They're just the one gun in the car. >> Stay more to the front cuz I we got the FD in the background. They just one gun. >> Is that what they're saying? >> So, they say you guys need them extricated. >> They're handcuffed. >> They're handcuffed. There's a gun somewhere in the car, but they're handcuffed. >> And this guy's leg is like folded up to his chest. I mean, he's he's up bad. >> All right. >> Driver might be able to get out >> or we just pull him out and sit him on the grass. >> Give me a damn C. I'll take him out myself. >> Front seat female. That car explain uh >> blood dinners. I heard >> that was the that was the male as far as I know. And then the uh the female, she had some uh I guess some stomach pain, some rib pain possibly. >> Nothing life-threatening though. >> No, no, no, no. >> They're lucky. And these guys are lucky. >> Yeah, I had her squeeze my hand. >> Front right pocket. Removing gun. >> Don't reach for that gun. >> Is that the only gun on you? >> Weapon secured. >> Where's the other one? Where's your gun at? >> Not another gun. >> We're We're going to end up uh riding with them obviously cuz I want them charged with aggravated vehicular assault. >> Oh, see there was a gun in the car. >> Yeah. >> Full magazine. One in the chamber. >> Go ahead and turn. Oh, really? That's fine. >> Right legs, bro. >> Okay. [screaming] today. >> They're hurt. Didn't sound life-threatening according to Mark, but >> with J. Marlin finally out, units now focus on getting Rontel out of the car. But even after assigning an officer to ride with each suspect to the hospital, there's much still left to be uncovered about J Marlin and Rontel. >> 102101. I'm riding with him. Okay. >> Did you guys end up catching the date to that uh that carjacking? I don't know how recent it is. >> Pretty recent cuz I looked in the thing. plate reader and it was only uh start hitting the stone like in the first. So, >> what's your name? >> J Marlin. >> What? >> J Marlin. >> J Marlin. >> J A Y M A R >> L O N. How old are you? >> 19. >> Last name's Hayes. >> Yes. >> Okay, >> I'll search him here. Let me step you in the back seat. >> Let's see. We got my >> I have a female radio. >> Give me one second. >> Possible right teamer. I feel horrible because I was going through the intersection and this guy in this truck, old guy started to go and I'm hitting lights and sirens and you know he's still kind of going make eye contact with tell the bang bang thing, you know. >> Well, it is they don't care. >> They don't care. With the victims already transported to the hospital, and J Marlin and Rontel now preparing to be transported as well, officers believe the scene is beginning to wind down, but one phone call is about to change the way they have been looking at the two suspects all along. I'm >> just looking to make sure nothing else came out of that car, like a gun or something else. You know, >> these guys don't care. >> No, they don't. >> Right now, the only thing I care about is that they're in pain. That's it. >> Is in a horrible spot. >> It might be interesting. That might be interesting. >> Hold everything cuz they shot a guy during the process and they don't know the condition. >> All right. Well, these were both laying right in the track of the crash. So, Lantel and J Marlin had not only stolen the car the night before, but they had also threatened the owner to step out before one of them fired multiple shots at him. Then, they fled in his car, leaving the victim bleeding from his gunshot wounds. He was immediately rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery. Now, as officers put the final pieces of this duo's shocking crime puzzle into place, they will eventually discover that one consequence of this incident is about to change the nature of the case. >> All right. Hey, this guy is actually looking at murder charges that you got in that in that squad. So, he nothing to lose by trying to get away or uh grab your gun or anything like that. So, be extra careful. All right? Don't let him out of your sight. Uh stay in the room with him. Like I said, he's got nothing to lose except because he's up on murder charges. All right, you need I'm going to have someone I'm going to have someone replace him. We're going to call for overtime. >> Contrary to everyone's fears, the shooting victim survived and was released from the hospital a week later, but with the bullet still lodged in his hip and mounting medical bills, he set up a GoFundMe page to help cover the costs. [music] However, the same could not be said for Sally, who passed away that same night from multiple injuries sustained in the crash. Her husband Norman later filed a wrongful death and negligence lawsuit against the city of Solen and the village of Bentleyville, arguing that deploying high-risk stopsticks at 80 mph directly in the path of innocent drivers was an act of negligence. There are no known updates indicating whether the lawsuit ever reached a settlement. Ultimately for this case, J. Marlin was charged with felony, involuntary manslaughter, aggravated robbery, felonious [music] assault, aggravated vehicular assault, times two, failure to comply with order or signal of a police officer, having weapons while under disability, carrying a concealed weapon, grand theft. He was also charged with a felony count of drug trafficking from the June 2021 case. Rontel was charged with felony aggravated [music] robbery, robbery, grand theft, theft/ petty theft. Ultimately, J. A Marlin was sentenced to 71 12 years in prison for all three cases against him since 2021. Rontel was sentenced to 18 years in prison for the same crimes. While justice may have been served, Sally's family and community will never forget the life she lived and the loss [music] they continue to carry.
