What's the problem? I don't understand what's the problem. >> Well, they're saying that uh you opened an account over there at Western Springs with a different name than you're using here and you're >> No, I didn't open up an account. >> So, is there a reason why you would be at Western Springs then? Cuz I mean, there's camera footage with you. So, I mean, you can try to lie to me and say you weren't there. >> I don't understand what's what's going on. >> Well, we're trying to understand why you opened a an account at a different location with a different name and then you're here with a different name. >> I don't. On February 12th, 2025, Shamberg, Illinois, police chased a woman who tried opening a bank account with a stolen identity. She bolted from one bank only to try again at another, but her cocky attitude and evasive answers didn't help her case. What led to this bold fraud attempt? Watch the video to see her unravel. >> How you doing? >> Oh, I'm good. Do >> you uh were you at uh uh Western Springs earlier? >> No, I wasn't. Okay. Cuz they got they got video footage of you over there trying to open up account with a different name. >> I don't know why. >> So, is there a reason why there would be camera footage of you opening up an account? >> No, I'm not sure. >> Okay. Are you trying to open an account here right now? >> Yeah. >> So, you were telling me you weren't at Western Springs earlier today? >> No. I mean, what's the pro I don't understand what's the problem. >> Well, they're saying that uh you opened an account over there at Western Springs with a different name than you're using here and you're >> No, I didn't open up an account. >> So, is there a reason why you would be at Western Springs then? Cuz I mean there's camera footage with you. So I mean you can try to lie to me and say you weren't there. >> I don't understand what's what's going on. >> Well, we're trying to understand why you opened a an account at a different location with a different name and then you're here with a different name. >> I don't I don't know. I mean, I'm not doing anything. I don't get it. I don't know. >> So So my question is, why did you open an account at a different branch with a different name while you're here with a different name? It's a pretty simple question. >> No, I understand. Um, I don't I don't know. >> You don't know? >> Who Who are you texting right now, ma'am? If I may ask, >> my daughter. >> Your daughter. Okay. Do you have an ID? >> Can we get the ID? >> Yeah. You You guys want >> I don't have any ID on me. >> You have anything with your name on it? A photo? >> No. >> No. So, how are you opening up a bank account with nothing? >> Yeah, I do. >> Yeah, I don't know. >> I know. When you want to take a copy of her ID? >> Yeah, >> the Pennsylvania one. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. >> So, I'm not understanding. >> Yeah, I don't understand what's going on here. These cops are right here, and I don't understand. >> The suspect is clearly nervous as she pretends to look for an ID. The officer can see one in her purse, but she refuses to give it to him. >> What was that you just said right there? >> Excuse me? You want You want my ID? >> Yeah, I've been asking for your ID. >> Yeah, I understand that. >> Do you have a card from another bank with your information on it? >> Yeah. Yeah, I do. >> Where would your ID be from? What state? >> Where would my ID be from? >> Yeah. Yeah. Do you have an Illinois driver's license or do you have another state? >> I don't have Illinois driver. >> What state do you have? >> Listen, if this is all a giant misunderstanding, we'll we'll we'll figure it out and we'll get you on your way. Okay. >> My understanding you seem very very nervous and concerned. It's okay. >> I don't I don't >> Right. But we we do have a job to do and we do have to investigate some stuff and there's some information. If you'll do me a favor, just set the phones down up here. Are you Who are you talking to right now? >> I'm talking to my mom. Okay. My >> dad. Can you can you tell unless they're going to send you an ID, do you mind hanging up the phone so we can continue? Cuz that's kind of delaying our process of being able to talk to you, right? >> Oh, yeah. >> Right. And unless they're going to >> to me and they're asking for my ID and stuff. >> My biggest concern is you were clearly texting somebody. >> So, do you have a do you have a car? Did you drive here? >> No. >> Okay. How did you get here? >> How did I get here? I got a ride >> with the black Nissan. >> Excuse me? >> From the black Nissan. Listen, we already know everything. So you you're playing dumb with us and you're wasting our time right now. >> Okay. >> So do you have an ID in the bag? Yes or no? Because we have this ID that you just gave to Western Springs earlier and this looks like you. >> Yes. >> Janelle M. Were played dumb when officers confronted her, denying she'd been at Western Springs Bank earlier. Despite clear camera footage, she acted clueless, repeating their questions to Stall outsmart them with a quick lie. Her nervous fumbling through her purse, phone glued to her ear, screamed classic criminal caught in the act. >> Okay. So, where's your ID? >> That the one that >> Yeah. Here. >> Yeah. This is kind of racist though. >> Not at all. >> Racist. >> I explained to you, >> I know you situation. >> I understand. So, >> so it has nothing to do with race. >> Nothing to do with racism. >> No. >> I mean, you're committing a crime, right? So, it doesn't really matter what race you are. >> I'm in um Chicago. I mean, not Chicago. Can you get your ID? >> Yeah, but I I need to You know what I mean? For my safety and you know the only person there's there's multiple people here. >> No, I know. Just for my safety since I'm the only one. >> Do me do me a favor. Put it on speaker phone. Set the phone down in front of you. This is the other concern we have, right? I don't know who you're talking to. >> What should I do here? Because I feel attacked. I want to listen to everything that they're saying. >> Put it on speaker phone. The person can listen to our conversation with you. There's no secrets. >> Yeah, I know. Well, okay. They want me to give my my ID and so I'm looking for it. >> There's a there's 100 in here. I'm putting it right here. Just >> for you. >> No, it's from what you opened. I don't want to lose it. From what you open the account with, we need to make sure that it's in there. You did you give them $100 for deposit to open an account? Okay. They just gave that to me. It's in an envelope. >> Oh, who does that go to? >> Well, right now it's being collected as potential evidence. So, >> Okay. Okay. >> So, you do not have any ID on you, I'm assuming, because there's not much in that paperwork and in that bag. you know, unable unable to. The partner's clearly got your driver's license. >> You were holding something that you put in the pocket. >> It was my It was a debit card. >> Okay. >> Can I take a look at the debit card? >> It It did not look like a debit card. >> You want to look at the debit card? >> If you can pull it out. Yeah. >> Would I have Do I have information to search that? >> Can I look through there? >> No. >> Nothing. Okay. >> I'm sorry. I don't mean to be either. >> Ma'am, you were just holding an ID. >> No, I wasn't. >> And I I literally just saw it. >> No, I was holding this. No, you weren't because >> the suspect hands the officer a fraudulent debit card. >> Natasha Williams. >> She just had an ID earlier and I saw it and she put it in a little pocket and she's trying to act dumb. Can you get your ID, ma'am? >> You want the ID? >> Yes. >> Yes. >> There you go. >> Okay. Same ID as this one. So, why were we playing difficult? >> I wasn't playing difficult, sir. I'm like really like I have never >> Nothing to be nervous about when I'm asking for an ID. It's all I'm asking for. >> Were you or were you not in Western Springs before? in Western Springs Bank. Hartland Bank in Western Springs today. >> Keep in mind there's cameras and footage. >> That's the only reason we're here. We didn't just find you out of the blue and decide to come in here. >> No, I understand. >> 338. >> So, they're asking if I was in another location today and they saw cameras of me being in another location. Dad, >> trying to open an account, which was for fraudulent. All we're trying to determine is why they would >> That's what I But I would think >> What's What city is this again? >> You're in Shamberg currently. Shamberg. Shamberg, Illinois. Yeah, I'm in Shamberg. >> Is your car outside still? >> No, I didn't have I don't have a car. I don't have >> in a black Nissan that was parked by Taco Bell. It's gone. >> No. >> Is the car over there? >> As far she was texting. >> No, I don't have No, I don't have any. Nobody. Nothing. >> As officers grilled her about the fake IDs, Janelle's story crumbled. She claimed she got a ride in a black Nissan, but couldn't explain who drove her or why the same car was at both banks. Her lies were worse than a drunk trying to talk their way out of a bar fight. Sloppy and obvious. She pulled the race card faster than she could have pulled her ID, accusing officers of bias to deflect. >> So, the camera just showed you getting out of a car. >> Yeah, of course. No, I I mean, I don't know what you guys are trying to say. I didn't drive here. >> I didn't drive physically. Don't >> I'm not worried about that. I'm not worried about that. I'm worried about where the car is and if somebody else is in there. >> No, no, no, no, no, no. >> Okay. So, how drove you? >> Who drove me? >> Yes. Somebody drove you. >> I mean, yeah, but it was somebody I don't know. But there's no You're thinking somebody >> Why would they be driving you to two different banks? The same car. Black Nissan. >> No, there was No, there was no same car. I don't No, there Okay, look. No, seriously. There was no same car. Okay, >> that's for sure. There's no same car. There's nobody here. I don't know the person. And it was >> How did you order that ride? >> Was it I'm talking about this is where I came. What do you mean? >> How did you Who would just randomly drive you, though? That's what I'm trying to determine. We already know what's going on, right? We already know that you've gone to another bank, opened an account. It was flagged as fraud. You were now at this bank opening another account or attempting to open another account which is also being flagged as fraud, which is why we are here, which is why we are having this conversation with you. There is a black Nissan which has been identified in Western Springs today and now here, same vehicle. So, are you are you being put up to this? Is there somebody that's forcing you to do this? Is there something else going on? cuz now is the time to really start to like not not delay what you're telling us and to tell us the truth of what's going on, right? There's no reason to be scared. We don't have our guns out. We're not doing anything. We're just talking to you out, right? We're just talking to you. We're having a conversation with you. >> I know, >> right? >> Yeah. >> In my experience, generally, when somebody is concerned that they're doing something wrong and they know they've been caught, they do what you're doing, which is right now, searching in your bag for multiple times for an ID that you know you're going to have to give to us. You know, you're going to have to give it to us. You know, we already have your information. You know why we are here. So now is the best time to get your side of the story out because if you don't get your side of the story out, all we have is the bank story and they have you flagged as fraud, right? >> Do you see what I'm saying? >> Yeah, I see what you're saying. >> So now is the time to really start to kind of search your soul and decide if you want to go down this path and just be considered somebody that's fraudulently opening bank accounts or do you want to be somebody that tells the truth of maybe there's something else going on and if there is something else going on, now is the time to tell us. Does that make sense? Do you see what I'm getting at here? >> There's nothing else going on. So again, I'm going to ask the question. Were you or were you not at the Western Springs earlier? Okay. Why are you on surveillance footage at Western Springs opening in a bank account? And why would they have your driver's license? Have you ever banked here before? Do you ever have account prior? >> No. >> So, how do they have a Florida driver's license? >> What do you mean? >> They have a Florida driver's license. That driver's license that they gave us on that printout is from Florida. >> Yeah. >> Separate from the driver's license that you just gave my partner. Completely different ID. Same person, different ID. Why would they have one from Florida when the one you have on your person is from here in Illinois? So, >> I don't have Illinois. >> Okay. Is that a Is that a driver's license from Florida? I didn't see it. So, >> yeah, but I don't have >> So, why would they already have that? You obviously didn't produce it to them prior to us being here. Did you give it to them already? >> Yeah, I did. >> So, you gave them the driver's license. I'll give it to her. >> Is that driver's license is the same one that was used in Western Springs to open an account? Cuz they're going to have a copy of it as well. >> I mean, >> her denials hit a wall when officers pointed out the Florida and Pennsylvania IDs. Same face, different names. She was the worst liar ever, dodging simple questions about where she lived or why she was in Illinois. Officers stayed patient, offering her a chance to explain, but her evasive I don't know mantra only tightened the noose. >> The western screams I'm not understanding like this is a lot. Like my dad is like, >> but your dad's not involved and your dad. You obviously care for your dad. >> But I love my my father's my protector and >> and you don't think that he's a little bit worried about probably what's going on? You're calling him randomly and telling him that you have the police talking to you at a bank? Well, I mean, no, because Yeah, because I want to tell him like cuz he knows I'm, you know, here and I'm only one here. Only me. >> Yeah, you're okay. >> In this whole state, I get that in this whole state. So, yeah. >> So, what brought you to Illinois? >> What do you mean? >> Like, why? Why are you in Illinois? You have a driver's license from Florida. Do you live in Illinois or do you live in Florida? I mean, that's a pretty simple question. >> Yeah. >> And you're being very, very evasive. >> No, I see. So, somebody that is like in here opening the account like >> I do stay in Illinois, but that's what I'm what I'm saying is that >> where where do you stay at? I just I just feel like I mean so what are you guys what are you guys saying like what is >> we're trying to figure out >> but what's going opening fraudulent accounts and if you're not opening fraudulent accounts we're trying to figure out what is going on so maybe the bank has a clear picture of what they're dealing with. >> Yeah. Yeah. I'm in Neighborville. So >> you live in Neighborville. Okay. >> I'm going to give you your bank card back. I don't need this bank card. >> Okay. Give me one second. >> Okay. This is where we're at. >> Okay. >> I put the phone down real quick. >> No, I'm listening. I'm sorry. >> Well, you might want to pay attention to this. Okay. >> Go ahead. Yes, I'm listening. >> So, this is obviously a fake ID. All right. >> Yes. >> And the Pennsylvania ID you have here? >> Yeah. >> Is it fake, too? >> What is that? >> The ID you use at uh Western Springs. It's the same photo. Pay attention real quick. >> I'm paying I'm bike. So, just come back. >> Okay. Well, so this is what's going to happen. >> You're already going to be under arrest for this. >> For for under arrest for what? >> For having a fake ID. Okay. >> Mhm. >> Now, ma'am, >> I'm listening. I'm listening. >> Okay. I'm giving you the courtesy to talk to you right now without being in handcuffs. If you continue to keep doing what you're doing, I'm just going to put you in handcuffs and you're done with the phone. Okay? >> So, I'm trying to give you the courtesy. So, put the phone away. >> But my dad has Stand up. >> Okay. I'm under arrest. >> Stand up. Can I put >> Stand up. >> Okay. Please >> stand up. >> I've already put that in my property. >> We'll do this. >> Okay. >> Do you have anything in your pocket? >> I'm able to get um No, I don't have anything in my pockets. Am I able to um am I able to um The question that I have is when wherever we're going, am I able to get a number out of my phone? >> Well, cuz I don't >> You just texted somebody that said or said they got me. I'm in Chicago. Yes, it did. I saw the text. I was standing right behind you. It's going to be on my body cam. I saw it. So, this phone is now evidence. So, whoever you're conspir conspiring with or whatever, >> but what about like I don't get no numbers. >> Well, we can give you access to pull numbers out of the phone. >> Oh, yeah. That'll be That's all I ask. That's all I ask. >> Fine. >> Just to pull number out of the phone. That's I don't And what city are we going to? >> You're in Shamburg. >> Yeah. So, what is the >> Shambra? That's where you'll be. You're going to Shrek police department. >> I just I'm the only person out here. So, >> that's okay. You don't have anything on you, correct? All you're wearing? >> Yeah. This is going >> The officer's frustration grew as Janelle kept stalling, clutching her phone like a lifeline. She swore she'd never been arrested, but her fake IDs told a different tale. Her attempt to play the victim, whining about feeling attacked, fell flat. She was caught and she knew it. >> Since you're female, we're not going to do a full >> search female that can swing up to this location for her search. >> Well, I don't mind. >> No weapons, no anything. So, what's the process? What's >> I'll explain it to you later. >> Am I going to like >> I'll explain it to you later. I've given you numerous chances for me to explain it to you and you continue to be rude and be on your phone after I was trying to explain you stuff. So now you can wait until we get to the PD and then I'll explain to you everything. >> Are you going to like a county or >> you're going to the Shamburg police station currently? >> Police station. >> Yes. You can you can have a seat here. We're going to wait for officer to search you before we put you in the store card. >> Do you get phone calls in there or no phone calls? >> You don't get any phone calls in there? No, I mean not me receiving phone calls, but I think you get like a call. >> You can make a call. Yeah, >> you can make a call. >> So, again, now's your time to be honest with us. Where is the vehicle? >> No, there's no vehicle to be 100% honest. >> How did you get here? >> I got here by Uber. >> I got here by a lift. >> I just want to make sure there's not. >> No, there's nobody there's nobody else with me. I'm only by myself. >> That's all I want to make sure. >> And I didn't get a ride. Nobody's sitting waiting nowhere like that. No, I'm >> We're not going to question you anymore. I just want to make sure that our backs are safe, that we don't have another officer coming here and there's somebody out in the parking lot. >> Oh, no, no, no. There's nobody parked around the corner, parked down the road, down anything. There's nothing like that at all. >> You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in court. You have the right to speak with a lawyer and have him present with you while you're being questioned. If you cannot afford to hire a lawyer, one will be appointed to represent you. Do you understand your rights? >> Yes. >> And are you willing to speak to us? >> What is that? I'm sorry, the last part. >> Are you just Are you okay to talk to >> like how we're talking? Yeah. >> Like cuz I'm trying to talk to you courtly. >> Oh, yeah. Yes. Yes. I just didn't understand. >> What I was trying to tell you earlier is the Western Springs location of this branch said that you were just there and you opened up an account using the Pennsylvania ID, which is also fake. Or is it is this your actual ID? This is fake. >> So regardless, >> I know I can't. I'm so sorry. Rude or my brain. >> It's a lot to take in. Yeah. It's >> Regardless, you're going to get fingerprinted. >> I've never been arrested in my life. So regardless, you're going to get fingerprinted >> and it's going to tell me your real identity. >> Yeah. >> Okay. So, is the Pennsylvania ID fake as well? >> It's yes or no? >> Cuz I already know the Florida one's fake. >> You got two different names on here. So, obviously with the same photo, the exact same photo, which is you. This is kind of that situation. >> Question that he just Okay. >> Well, you just read off. >> Is your Pennsylvania ID fake? >> Keep in mind, like I said, right, everybody's got two sides to their story. We don't know your side of the story cuz you were being very very evasive. Now is your chance to tell us what is going on. >> Can I please hit my vape? My whole soul and stuff is like >> Yeah. I I I understand. >> Yeah, that's it, sir. >> Okay. >> So, this is your >> I can hold it for you to tell us. >> Janelle switched to pleading, insisting she'd never been arrested. Officers weren't buying her innocent act, especially after she tried stalling by echoing their questions to spin more lies. Her request to vape and grab phone numbers showed she still thought she could charm her way out. >> What is going on and what your intentions are? >> As of now, we have a woman who's got fake IDs at banks opening fraudulent accounts. Is that the story that you want represented? Is that what you want everybody else to know? Or do you want your side of the story out? Do you want to tell us what is going on? Maybe there's some explanation. I don't know. Maybe you're running from an ex and you're hiding your identity because you're concerned. I don't know. But you have to keep in mind that you need to tell us the truth of what's going on. Are you making a mistake and you're opening fraudulent accounts? You've been putting up to this. This is your chance to get your side of the story out. The facts are clear. We know the facts of why we're here and what you're under arrest for or what you're being charged with. He's already explained that to you. >> My only question is this Pennsylvania one also fake. It's all I'm asking. >> Is this the time where I can say that I don't want to talk without a lawyer? >> Sure. If you don't want to talk without a lawyer, that's fine. I'm not going to ask you any more questions. You are going to still be fingerprinted. So, regardless if you say anything, if your name doesn't come back to the two names that are on here, you're still going to get charged for possessing both these fake IDs. >> Yeah. >> I'm just giving you the courtesy to admit to it. >> It's not. >> It's not what? >> It's not. Go ahead. >> It's not It's fake. >> I'm going to find your real name, so you might as well just tell me. >> You're just delaying the process. >> Well, I don't mean to delay it. I'm just like really I'm really scared, though. I'm just I'm just >> I've never been arrested before and I don't know what's coming. >> So, >> what's uh your first name? >> If you don't tell me your name, then I will be charging you with obstruction of ID. So, you have to tell me your name unless you want another charge. I suggest you just give me your name. I'm trying to help you out. I'm going to find your name regardless. You're going to get fingerprinted. Like, there's no there's no way around it. But if you refuse to tell me your By law, that is obstruction ID and that's another charge. Okay. My name >> What's the first name? step over here. You can you can just turn. >> All right. Do you have anything on you? >> Nope. I don't have anything. >> I got heels. I'm sorry. >> Do you have anything in your shoe there? >> No. You want me to take them off? >> Do you want to take off your shoes now or you want? >> No, we can do it at the PD. >> Okay. Yeah, you guys. >> We'll do do it at the PD. We just wanted to get an overall. We're going to put you in a squad car. Okay. You'll be transported back to our PD and we'll have another female officer there that will search your shoes and stuff like that. Okay. >> Mhm. >> One of our auxil. Thank you very much. >> No problem. >> Okay. Okay. I'm going to walk you up. >> Okay. >> Slippery. So, I'm going to help you. I'm going to hold you here. >> Okay. >> All right. >> I'll take it. >> Yep. >> I'll take it very slow. We're going to go to this car right here. >> The second one. >> This uh 101 right here. Is there any way these loosen >> loosen? No, it's my fault. I apologize. I don't >> I can't loosen them. They're as loose as they possibly can be. They're pretty tight. They're pretty loose. I mean, I can get two fingers in there. They're probably looser than me. >> You're not far from the >> I'll push your jacket in there. How about that? >> Okay. Thank you. >> Take a little pressure off. >> Yeah, I appreciate it. Thank you for being >> As officers read her rights, Janelle's evasiveness hit a wall. She admitted the Pennsylvania ID was fake, but clammed up about the rest, invoking her right to a lawyer. Her claim of being alone in Illinois, far from her Florida roots, felt like another halftruth. >> Yep. I'll hold you that way. You can lean. I know it's an awkward position. >> Oh, can you bring my jacket in? >> Yep. >> Yeah. >> I'm so sorry. I can't. >> These are opposite than ours. Ours go this way. >> I know. The better way. >> Where is it? >> These are old. It's like tucked all the way in the corner. >> I'm gonna go I'm gonna reach really far over here. I'm set. >> Yeah, it's the worst spot ever. >> What I really just care about is just, you know, getting access to I mean, you guys giving me numbers out of there. >> We'll let you get the numbers and you can make a phone call from our police station. You have constitutional rights. We're not going to take those from you. >> Do you see it? >> It's like tucked in that corner. I know it's a pain. >> I got it. >> Yeah. This I was not expecting that. >> Okay. >> It's the worst. This is a old spot. That's why. >> That's okay. >> There you go. A little better. Nothing. >> Yeah, I was I say like I start going this way. >> I'm just going to tuck this into your back. >> Okay, that's >> So there we go. >> Yep, that's fine. >> Thank you. Thank you very much. >> So So I checked both of them. We can get double fingers. >> The biggest thing is because you're in an awkward position. We don't have too far of a drive. It takes a little bit longer cuz the weather's pretty bad. So I'm going to take it slow. >> But once we get into the PD, we can readjust those cuffs. >> Okay. >> When you got that person, were they out? Did they get out? you kind of invoked your right to not speak with us, right? So there's certain things I can tell you certain things, right? I can talk to you about generalities, >> but there's certain things that I can't discuss with you >> in detail. >> Correct. So all I can say is it depends on the situation, right? You at any point have the freedom to tell us, no, I'm willing to talk. I'm willing to tell you my side of the story and tell you what's going on. Um, all I can tell you is that in these generalized situations, it depends on the circumstances surrounding the case, right? We don't treat every single person and every single situation the same. Everybody's different. Everybody's got a reason for doing what they're doing and why they're doing it, stuff like that. So, with that being said, I I don't want to mislead you by any means, but I will tell you that generally, no. I mean, you're facing a felony, a felony for fraudulent activity, opening fraud bank accounts, using fake IDs. Those are felonies. Those are subject to mandatory or they do have minimum sentences which would require some sort of jail time. With that being said, a lot of the situation is based off of your circumstances. They take into consideration where you live, where whether you're working. There's a lot of things that are taken into consideration. Those are all things that we discuss and we work through with the courts. >> Was she a solo scammer or a pawn in someone else's game? Too scared to spill the truth. Janelle's scam to open fraudulent bank accounts with stolen identities collapsed under the weight of her own lies and undeniable evidence. This wasn't just a crime. It was a stark reminder that playing dumb can't outsmart cameras and trust in shady online schemes can cost more than freedom.
