An officer with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife was on patrol when he observed a fishing vessel returning from a trip. He made contact to initiate a resource inspection. >> What site are you guys going to this side or that side? >> We're supposed to be on the other side. >> Okay. Okay, stop. Stop riding on the car. Stop. Stop riding. >> Thank you. Thank you. >> Yep. >> Okay. Can over there. Okay. I see what's in your hands. Huh? >> Hey, >> knock it off. Stop writing. Don't Don't write don't write when I'm here. >> How's it going, guys? >> Good. >> Yeah. >> Unbelievable. >> I don't believe it. >> All right. I'm with Fish and Wildlife. Just let you know I do have a camera on. All right. Just have to make you aware of that. Uh just check your guys' licenses and catch. He'll have some questions for you first here and then I'll I'll check all your fish. All right. >> Uh any uh salmon encounters today? >> No. >> Uh what were your releases for today? >> Uh the boat? >> Yeah. Fish release today. >> Oh, no. No, no, no. Releases? >> No. Okay. No small lings or rock fish or anything? [Music] >> You ate crabbit today? >> Yeah. Awesome. Just need to see your fish real quick. Go ahead. >> So, they in the cooler? >> No. Uh, in the box right there. You mind if I hop aboard, please? [Music] Snakes. >> What do you guys think that is? >> Uh, >> no, that's a yellow eye. [Music] This is a canary. All right. >> Okay. I'll show you the difference when I get them all out. But you got a ton of yellow eyes in here. [Music] >> That's a yellow. >> Yeah. >> Any other fish on board? >> No. You guys catch these out deep when you're hobbit fishing probably. >> Yeah. >> What depth do you encounter? Uh majority of your rocks are shut. >> 500. >> I just need to measure how it cooler where it works best for you. How many halibit did you guys get? >> Come on. Two. >> All right. So, these Yeah, these seven are yellow eyes. That's a canary right there. But >> the uh the card we thought that it comes with the black fins. >> So So they have a little bit of black on the tip of their fins there. But it's pretty >> it's pretty minor. Um see with the canary here they have canary has a fork tail as opposed to the squared off tail. Um canaries also have much more modeling on them. Um the other thing it'll show you on uh on that sheet you're looking at is yellow eyes have a rough ridge right here over their eyes. If you feel that right there, there's a rough ridge. See how canary doesn't have that? >> Yeah. >> And then yellow eyes. I mean, the main thing is just >> Look at that eye. Fins. >> Yeah. Yeah. You're not going to see a canary this big. I'll tell you that right now. This is This is like a 80y old fish probably right here. All righty, guys. That's all I need. Thank you. >> So, we can throw this one back in there. Everything else looks good. I think >> Yeah. I'm going to hop back on real quick. Can you see fishing licenses from everyone, please? You already have yours. You caught one of how it, right? >> Yeah. >> I guess. >> Yeah. And you just marked that when you were going up. >> Tried to. Yeah. >> Yeah. Is this the mark that you tried making right there? >> Yes. I have no idea what the date was. >> Okay. Yeah. So, how how wasn't open on the 30th? So, um >> What is this mark? Is that >> That was me trying to purchase. That was just you trying to mark it. Okay. >> Cuz you caught the one, right? You said. Okay. >> All right. So, I need to see IDs from everyone, please. Are they all yellow? >> Yeah, those are all yellow eyes. So, here's here's canaries are the other ones in here that kind of look similar. >> Yeah. >> Are you going to feed them? >> Uh, they're going to get donated. >> Donated. >> Probably. Yeah. >> Science and research maybe. >> Uh, food bank. Really? Yeah. >> All right. Um, yeah. So, obviously you guys know you can't keep the other eyes, right? It was just a misidentification it sounds like. >> Yeah. So unfortunately for your own >> what >> not intentional unless >> I'm not I'm not accusing you of bit being intentional. Normally people don't have them sitting on top when it's intentional because they normally have them hidden when it's intentional but um >> regardless pretty bad pretty bad to have seven yellow eyes on your boat. Um >> it's a it's a pretty big no no in the state >> pictures several times and keep looking at the black tails and these don't don't have black tails. Yeah, they just have a little bit of black there on the tips. It's it's very subtle um that that characteristic for them, but when you're catching big orange fish like this way deep, it's almost always a yellow eye. >> When you catch them deep like that, fishing for >> how it comes so big. >> Yeah. Yeah. And you can see, I mean, I mean, to me, when I put these side by side, there's just a there's a big difference in the in how they look. I mean, you can definitely tell it's a different species there. Um, the main the main thing I would look for, like I said, is like a pretty easy one just to tell right off the bat is >> they they have a fork tail. Uh, the canaries do where yellow eyes have that square tail. They don't have any fork to it. Um, and then the other thing is just when you're pulling up and you see me, definitely don't go for your cards and start riding on them. I get it. That's your instinct, but it's not not a great look. Um, have to have them recorded right away. We do that because of the limits on how annual limits. Um, so very important. I I will say, can you get those recorded now? The two >> Oh, that you have. >> Yes, I would love to. What's the date? >> It's the 2nd. May 2nd, 52. And you're You caught him in area three, I assume. Did you go out to the southwest corner or where did you guys go out to? >> I think it's what corner 31 mile from here. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Yeah. >> So, you're three then. So, >> yeah. >> You'll put in there, you know, 352 is how you mark that. >> All right. No other fish on the boat, right? >> No. Oh, this right here. >> Oh, come on, guys. >> What's it? Okay, this is when I start to get a little irritated. Why are these ones down here? >> Stuck down there in the heat of the moment. We weren't trying to hide anything from you, buddy. I I really out there. Couldn't keep tracking [Applause] all. [Music] So those are all all yellow eyes down there. [Music] >> Are there any other fish on the boat? >> No, sir. There should be. Please. >> Yeah. Look. We can open all the hatches and hide allers if you like, but yeah, we're not hiding any fish. >> Really, really important that you tell me though. >> God, man, we're not hiding any fish. Let me open everything for you. Okay. And you can reach into anything. We're This is honest mistakes, man. >> Okay. Um, you want to look forward? >> It's all good. I'll just That's all that's all check. But it's just really important when I ask that question. >> Yeah, for sure. >> That you remember uh cuz the way it looks on camera obviously is that I'm asking you a question and then I find fish as soon as I open up another >> container. all there. >> So, were these ones that were down in there, were they caught a little earlier in the day or something? >> Yeah. >> Okay. I can I can tell. Yeah. So, you got 13 yellow eyes on board. Okay. Um each one of these fish can be a gross misdemeanor in this state. um which can add up to for yellow eyes is about $500 a fish in court. So, uh pretty big deal. Um I'm not going to go that hard on you in terms of that, but you are you guys are all going to get something in the mail from the court, okay, that you're going to have to respond to. >> Um I don't know exactly what's going to entail in terms of like if you're actually going to have to go into court or not or they're just going to knock it down to like an infraction or something like that. I'm not not sure of that yet. Um, but regardless, you're gonna get you're gonna get mail and you're gonna have to respond to it. Okay. Otherwise, you're going to have warrants issued. So, um, does everybody understand that? >> Oh, yeah. >> Okay. All right. So, next >> next time, all I can say is that don't keep fish unless you're certain about what they are. Okay. Um, do you guys spend much time out here at all or >> first time? >> This your first time? First time ever? >> We usually salmon. >> Yeah. Okay. >> I know you've been very kind to us. No, appreciate it. >> Hey, I don't it >> I don't hold anything personally ever against anyone for in this job, but >> could be tougher. >> Um, obviously I have to do my job. So, um, be hard on this. This is >> what you need to do. >> Yeah. Were you Van? >> Is that correct? Okay. And then >> Jake. >> Jake. Okay. Okay. And then yeah, you guys will be held responsible today for failing to record your how bit too because you didn't have them recorded when you came in. That's a very minor one. Um that's just a small ticket, but um just expect to see that on your reses, too. Um and then the yellow eye thing is going to have to be sometimes I not if it's only one or two I can knock this down, but when there's 13 on a boat, you guys are all going to get something for it in the mail. Okay. So, >> all right. All right. No questions on that. >> All right. >> Can I help you? >> Uh, I'm going to need to get a picture real quick if I'm all just laid out here. >> All right. You don't have to help me by any means. Um, [Music] >> all right. So, we're just going to take them up to my truck. >> Yeah, by no means do you have to help carry these up if you don't want to. You know, I'll tell you it happens. It's not like the end of the world or anything, but just make sure it doesn't happen again. All right. It sucks. So careful in the sound making sure that your sound right. >> Yeah. >> I mean [Applause] [Applause] What does that cost to fish? >> Yeah. >> Not good. >> Not good. >> Get a man. >> All right. Thanks. >> Not good. Not good at all. >> They just don't have any like you know the canaries have that modeling on them too. >> The canary doesn't have a yellow eye. >> No. Exactly. Doesn't have that yellow eye like that. Sometimes they'll have a little bit of a yellow hint but >> not like that. >> No. >> Yeah. I mean that's like >> that's the definition of a yellow eye. >> And them guys all the time. >> Yeah. In the end, all four anglers received charges for retaining yelloweyed rockfish and failing to submit a portion of their catch upon request. Two of the anglers were also cited for failing to immediately record their halibit. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide the outcome as we were unable to locate the court records and our attempts at contacting the prosecutor's office failed.
