today we're at hunt elementary school for our summer youth program our summer youth program runs for six weeks during the summer and our officers are actually the camp counselors so some of the activities that the kids engage in while they're here at our summer youth program is arts and crafts we've got some enrichment activities where folks from the museum come in and provide some instruction there are sports activities that take place our rad class is our rape aggression defense class there's a kids version of that training and every kid is taught some basic self-defense tactics and techniques to utilize in the event that they're in a dangerous situation i think this program has a good relationship with law enforcement because it helps you create a bond with police that you probably won't have if you don't come to this program because even when i see police on the streets today i'm able to say hi to them and have a special bond with them like i wouldn't have if i wasn't in this camp our summer youth program really exemplifies our mission as a police department to provide high quality professional police service in partnership with our community not only do we have police and fire that are part of the the counselors we're also providing volunteer opportunities for our teenagers through our high schools to accumulate hours towards their graduation i did the program for four years before coming back to a volunteer the level of engagement that these children have with our police officers throughout the program is great because they're able to build relationships and bonds and it carries over into the school year these campers know hey this this police officer he helped me throughout summer camp i was just playing basketball with him a couple weeks ago and if they have a problem their family has a problem they know who their sro is their school resource officer they can come to them you know for help our summer youth program would not be possible without the outstanding efforts of our community involvement unit first and foremost have to thank broward county public schools for providing the facility they also provide a good portion of the nutrition that we're able to serve to these campers i also have to thank share your heart they provide the additional nutrition we've also got partnerships with phi serve off lease and parkridge baptist church they provide a lot of the materials that we need to run the camp but most importantly they ensure that every camper leaves here with a backpack full of school supplies for next school year in all new uniforms without the amazing partnerships that we've got we wouldn't be able to pull this off
