Okay, [Music] >> she's gone. >> These officers had just found a hardworking teenage girl whose life was tragically cut short. But sadly, horrifying scenes like this are part of the job as an officer. >> This looks like a body that's burning. >> I know you want the gate open, baby. We're working on that right now. Okay. >> Their most autistic child whose name is is basically caged into the downstairs living area. And when I say caged, caged. >> These were the moments when good cops discovered the most horrific crime scenes. Starting off with the case of a strange encounter that led to a chilling discovery. A man who had taken the lives of his entire family. >> I'm serious. I'm not crazy. He said that he five people. >> What the hell, dude? >> Cleveland police. >> Oh, [ __ ] Yo, it's real. Get EMS rolling. >> On January 13th, 2023, officers from the Kuya Hoga County Sheriff's Office were on patrol when a man suddenly walked up to their cruiser with a sickening confession on his lips. >> I'm serious. I'm not crazy. And you could go to the address and verify. The address is that court, but I want you to handcuff me first. >> All right, let me pull up really quick. What the hell is going on, dude? What the hell, dude? Come on. I got us. Get out. Turn your camera on 240 radio. Go ahead. >> Yeah, you can put us out or clear us off of this assignment. >> No cause and uh put us out at 44 and Clark with a mail. He approached He approached our vehicle and said that he just did something bad and he's going to give us an address on M court as to what he did and where it's at. 3719 Mac. >> He said that he killed five people. >> While officers were speaking with Martin, whose story seemed far too outrageous to be true, dispatch received a call from his ex-girlfriend. She claimed he had facetimed her during a walk shortly after committing the alleged crime. >> Cleveland police, this is operator Taylor. How can I help you? Hi, Tira. Um, I got a phone call from my from my ex-boyfriend that he just killed his whole family. The one he said he killed was his sister, brother-in-law, two kids, and his sister's father. >> Okay, ma'am. Hold on one second. He said he text you this. >> No, he called me to tell me that. >> You think he's serious? When the first time he called, he was crying and told me that he loved me, that he's always going to love me and he's never going to see me again, and he was very highly upset and then hung up. When I called him back several times, he refused to answer. >> Given the sensational nature of her ex-boyfriend's claim, it's no surprise the dispatcher initially responded with skepticism. But as the caller revealed more details, the situation began to shift, offering context to his story and hinting at potential danger for anyone involved, including responding officers. >> Does he have any mental physical disabilities? No, he's bipolar, but he did tell me that he has a gun and he still has two bullets in it. >> Two bullets left the deputies with a haunting question. Would Martin take his own life or would he harm someone else? >> And I know the mom and the grandmother on way to on the way to the house. >> Um, his mother. >> Her mother. What? It's their mother. Yeah. His >> boyfriend's mother. >> Yes. You know her name? You said he's known to have what kind of disorder? >> He's bipolar. He He has bipolar issues. >> Do we know anything else? >> Um, no. He's been in prison before. He's been there total 21 years of break, but it was never for charging. >> So, he called upset and crying. >> Yeah. The first time he did, the second time when we talked on FaceTime, he seemed a microwave. He seemed more calm, but he just kept saying over and over because, "I did it. I did it. I did it." >> Officers with Martin were able to arrest him. And while he was driven to the police station, other deputies closed in on the address at Mack Court. When they arrived on scene, they met Martin's mother, who was deeply concerned about the safety of her family. Thank you. >> My daughter lives here. I got a call from two cousins. My son murdered them all. I don't know. I just got here and I don't trust him. So, I was afraid to knock on the door. I was waiting for you guys. >> Son's not here. I don't believe he he approached you. Do you know? Do you know who the cousin? Does he have mental disorders? What's up? >> Who? >> Who? The guy that got >> My son. Yes. He was locked up for 20 years. Yes, he's got mental. >> What was he locked up for? >> Uh all kinds of violations >> like like violence against people. >> Okay. Just hang tight for us. >> But you know my daughter's car by my side. Never [Music] [Music] >> female. >> We don't need permission. >> I wasn't notified of anyone being inside. >> Clint, please not check. I don't have the cops. I don't know. >> Oh [ __ ] >> Clean. Police. >> Somebody's on the bed. >> Oh yo, it's real. Get EMS rolling. >> According to a probable cause affidavit, officers were allowed to enter the home. They entered a devastating scene. Five victims each shot in the head. Three of them, 16-year-old Jaden Munice, 34y old Angelique Munice, and 70-year-old Miguel Angel Gonzalez, were pronounced deceased at the scene. Two others, 48-year-old Anthony Booth and his 8-year-old daughter were rushed to a nearby hospital. Anthony Booth later succumbed to his injuries while the 8-year-old survived, but with the unimaginable trauma of losing nearly her entire family. Homicide detectives and crime scene units worked quickly to piece together what had happened. What could possibly drive someone to commit such a horrific act. Only one person had the answer. Martin Munice. He was taken to the station for questioning. What he confessed wasn't just disturbing. It was the kind of truth that would haunt detectives for years to come. is um Detective Schulz and I, Chuck and I, um we're really not too up to speed on what all is taking place here. Excuse me. >> Well, I tried to kill my sister's whole family, but two of them got lucky and lived. >> Two of them got lucky and lived. >> Okay. >> The other three didn't. >> What What prompted death? Anything specific? >> Just the way people treat me. >> Okay. You know, I came home from prison. I didn't bother nobody. I tried to get a job. They're going to tell you when they scramble through my tab. I was on deed. I did job interviews. I went to Catholic churches, just couldn't get a job. And then they make food, but they eat it all. So, by the time I get to it, there's nothing to eat. And all they tell me is that's my business. Okay. So, I let that go on for months. You know, I got blisters on my feet from walking 11 miles trying to get a job, but you guys got two cars and you can't drive me. >> Sure. >> So, I killed them. >> So, how how long have you been living at the house on there? >> Couple of months. >> Couple months. >> The detectives were stunned by Munice's cold confession. He wasn't holding back and now they were eager to uncover the motive behind his actions that night. >> So, Mr. Munis, can you can you walk us through the events of this evening? How it transpired or? No. I came upstairs to eat and I asked my sister's dad. No, I'm lying. I asked Jaden, her son. I said, "Yo, where's the rest of the food at?" He said, "No, it's gone." I'm like, "What you mean it's gone? I didn't even eat yet." So, he was like, "Well, I don't know what to tell you." So, I said, "Okay, well, where's my sister at?" So, I asked my sister. I said, "Where's the food at?" She said, "I don't know. Why are you asking me? I said, "Okay." I said, "Yo, uh, I didn't eat. We're going to have a problem." Nobody said nothing. So, uh, they had to go. >> Munice's next confession made it clear that Munice had already accepted that he'd spend the rest of his life behind bars. >> What happened when you left the house? Do you recall where you went? >> I don't know, man. I just wanted a gun in my hand. >> Sure. Do you any idea where where you where you put that? >> No, >> not certain. >> Did you take it out of the house with you? >> Yeah, it was on me. >> I don't know where I put it at. I had to put it somewhere. >> But you left the house with the gun. >> Yeah, I wasn't going to leave it there. This ain't the first time I'm killing somebody. I got caught with the first gun on the first body. They just couldn't prove it was me. >> Where was that at? >> New Jersey. I gave the guy's name is Jamon Molina. I killed him October 13th, 2013. Northgate Park Daylight. >> Why'd you do that? >> He robbed me. >> What was his name? >> Jamie Molina. You need to call them and verify if you want. >> Martin Munice was charged with first-degree murder in connection with the homicide in New Jersey. In August 20124, Martin Munice was sentenced to four consecutive life sentences for the quadruple homicide on Mark Court. Moving on to the case where a routine welfare check led to what may be one of the most disturbing discoveries yet. >> Do you mind? Do you mind if I come in? >> Yeah. >> I know you want the gate open, baby. We're working on that right now. Okay. Their most autistic child whose name is is basically caged into the downstairs living area. And when I say caged, caged. He's naked. There's feces around. It's extremely messy in the area. >> On April 23rd, 2024, officers were dispatched to a home in Nevada to conduct a welfare check after several of the kids living inside the home hadn't attended school for a long time. >> Sorry to wake you up, bud. What time did you go to bed? >> About 2 three >> this morning. >> Yeah. >> Okay. So, it's not horrible. You got some sleep. >> Yeah. >> Uh even though the kids might have kept you awake some. >> So, I'm just here uh because they asked me to be here. >> Okay. >> Based on the situation, the kids haven't been in school. One of them is being home homeschooled uh for the number of days that they haven't been in school. So, they got a few questions based on what they need to do as a school representative. Okay. >> For truency. Okay, does that make sense? >> It sounds like you got some challenges here at the house. Um, your wife and you have different, you know, schedules to probably try to handle the kids and stuff like that. That's great. It sounds like you're doing trying the hardest you can to make the situation work, right? So, but they still have a job to do based on, you know, their policies and >> students. Yes, we're just checking because they haven't been at school. Um, >> um, he's not in school today and >> um I think he has to be the school. um uh they're supposed to be in uh Nevada Learning Academy, but they haven't been, you know, enrolled. So, we just concerned to see, we just want to check that they're all okay. >> Um so that I can bring the report back to school. >> Um what concerned me was that I heard the banging and he said, "Let me out. Open the door." He thought it was police. He's like, "Please, let me out." So, but then when I asked if he's okay, he stay quiet. So, I just wouldn't assure that that I can see that he's okay. >> Oh, yeah. He's okay. And a kid like that, it makes sense that they would say, "Let >> the man who eventually opened the door was identified as 41-year-old Jeffrey Scanland." Initially, it was just a school official who knocked, but when no one answered and she heard screaming from inside, she immediately called the police. >> The old like child kind of like >> Yeah. He >> Do you mind do you mind if I come in? >> Yeah. Um he's a big kid. >> I I can come in. >> Yes. >> Okay. >> Um >> he's half Samoan, so he's a big kid. Oh yeah, probably got some meat to him. >> Oh yeah. >> Once inside, the officer saw what looked like cage bars installed in the living room. But that wasn't all. The room was reportedly covered in human waste smeared across the floors and walls with piles of trash scattered everywhere. Coming up, Jeffree started explaining why things were like this. >> Um, so, >> hey buddy. >> He basically we had to do this because it keeps him from kicking holes. >> Mhm. >> Everywhere in the house. Does he have like uh he doesn't hit his head on the walls or anything like that? >> No. No. >> Okay. >> Um how about the other children then that are supposed to be in school? >> Yeah, they're upstairs. >> You able to get them down here? >> Yeah. >> Hey, Sarge. >> The officer wanted to ensure that the other kids inside the house were okay. Meanwhile, another officer arrived and started asking Jeffrey questions about the cage. >> Set up for him. >> Yeah. says part one. >> Yeah. Half some kids. He's >> very strong. >> He just turned 11, but he's >> super strong. Yeah. I mean, I he's ripped off cabinets, kicked holes. His room upstairs, he you know, he kicked a hole all the way through into my bedroom. >> Okay. >> You know, it's just he, >> you know. >> Okay. >> So, to keep him from destroying the house, we try to keep him in here. >> He doesn't know how to unlock. >> No. Wow. Well, On this one, we had to uh we had to tie this up. And then on the other door, on the other door, we have a key lock. >> Okay. >> So, >> cuz Yeah. I mean, some some of them are very observant. >> Oh. Oh, dude. They are >> smart. Smart in ways that we don't expect sometimes. >> Oh, they're so sharp. Him him and my daughter, they're both autistic. So >> So my concern as a safety officer >> is what happens in case of a fire. >> Uh that that can be cut right there. It's just tied up. So, that door opens right up. Uh, and the other one has it locked. >> So, he could open it and yank it. >> You have a >> uh No, it's just tied up right now. It's just tied up at >> Right. Right. Right. Right. >> But I mean, technically >> Okay. >> It opens right up. >> Okay. >> Yeah. Yeah. They were concerned about that when they installed it. >> Yeah. Yeah. And that's I mean, that's what we're looking for is the safety of the situation. Did you want to go up and get the kid? Jeffrey explained that he had two children living with autism, but kept only the older 11-year-old boy shielded from the rest of the house, claiming it was due to the boy's strength and alleged destructive behavior. Moments later, the father of four offered an explanation for the children's absences from school. >> Hi, baby. How did I go to school today? >> Uh, they've been sick for about the last couple of days. Um, >> we're good. She doesn't She doesn't need to come all the way down. Or do you have questions or >> uh No, I don't know. Yeah, she uh they've had the flu for about all the last week. It started with him and they were throwing up and she caught it, he caught it, whole house got it for me. So >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. And that wasn't related to the school though that they had the flu. >> No. >> Okay. So commun communications >> communication is huge. All right. Right. >> So, no matter what, call the school cuz I've even had like casinos call us to check on employees. >> Okay. >> Casinos, adults check on their adults >> because the adults didn't call in sick or this or that and it's been 2 days. So, we even have, you know, big corporations calling on adults employees to make sure they're okay. Okay. >> So, big thing is communication. Call the school, say, "Hey, she's not feeling well, stomach flu. Be out for 1 days, maybe 5 days, whatever." Same with whatever other children. So that way they have an understanding what's taking place. >> Jeffrey told police that the family had been sick with the flu, but that excuse didn't get him off the hook so easily. >> They both share a car and go to work together or something, you know. So yeah, I was passed out and didn't know if it was just >> right pounding or not. And >> so his speech isn't uh very good right now, right? >> Yeah, it's not. >> Okay. when he was first born, I mean, he he didn't actually start talking till he was about four or five years old. Okay. >> We thought he was just going to be non-verbal for his whole life. >> Yeah. >> But, you know, he's been going to school and basically all all his verbal skills are basically just what he wants and then what he copies and hears off of him. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. Cuz I tried to communicate through with him through the the window through the plywood just to make sure he was good. I'm like, "Hey, are you okay?" You know, everything good? cuz he was >> and of course the way it sounds because of his size I mean it sounded horrible but I was like well he's not screaming like he's in pain or anything like that. So >> I was like you know hey I don't see any >> like cause to be concerned in that aspect cuz he's yelling >> cuz you know some kids on the spectrum that's what they do. >> Yeah. You know, I just like as long as he's, you know, if he's, you know, using his head like some of them do, as long as he has the helmet or something like that, you know, >> he loves using his feet to get kick. >> Doesn't look like he's got any injuries or anything like that. So, that's good. >> Yeah. We've had to I mean, all this plywood we had to put up just so he doesn't break windows. >> Yeah. I noticed the one window was broke. >> Yeah. >> I mean, that made sense when I seen it. I'm like >> outside the officers called CPS to give them a rundown of what was going on at the scene. So, um, the situation is, uh, we're probably going to we're going to need somebody out in route here. So, we got our SVU on the way, um, their most autistic child whose name is is, um, basically caged into the downstairs living area. And when I say caged, caged. Um, he's naked. There's feces around. It's extremely messy in the area. and uh windows are boarded up. So when our SVU gets here, I don't know what children may need to go with you guys, but this is extremely autistic. Uh very strong uh young boy because he he tear he tears apart the house. He's teared cupboards off a wall and stuff like that. He's just strong and very destructive as a child with his level of autis autism. He doesn't have I'm surprised he doesn't have a helmet on, you know, so he's not banging his head against things, but like he was pounding on the plywood that's over top of the windows and it was I mean, you could hear from the street. I mean, just thuds, thuds, thuds, thuds. But when I was trying to ask him his name and stuff, he couldn't uh he's not cognitively able to answer questions. So with that, I mean, he's been out of school for a while, I guess, and I mean, I could understand why in a sense. Um, I don't I mean, you'd almost have to have a specialist come into the house and meet with them. Um, they've been sick, though, too. It looks I I don't see that it doesn't appear that the kids look sick right now, but there was some sickness going around last week, like throwing up, flu kind of stuff. Coming up, the children's moms arrived at the scene, giving the officers an opportunity to talk to her for the first time. >> Hey, you Misty. Hey. So, we got called here. My name is Officer Boie. We got called here because the Clark County School District uh truency officers were tasked to come out here um to try to make contact, make sure the kids were okay. All right. So, that's why we came out here was to assist them. Um based on them not making contact, they could hear some screaming from the inside. So that's where we went ahead and uh they called us to assist and try to figure out what the situation was. Okay. >> So we came here um and their job was to make sure that the kids were okay cuz they haven't been in school, right? And nobody's been calling the school to give the updates. So they weren't aware that the children were sick. >> So your husband, we're talking to him right now. He informed us that they were sick and that was one reason why they were out of school. Um but there was also concerns based on uh you know, we heard the yelling from the inside, the pounding on the inside. you know, what's what's the real situation? >> Police identified the mom as 46-year-old Misty Scandlin. >> Does that make sense? So, that that brought up >> Yeah, we see that. We understand that and we know that's a challenge. Um, so based on that, uh, going in there talking to your husband was asleep, so it was hard to get him up. He finally came to the door. So, we were talking to him trying to understand this the whole situation of everything. Does that make sense? So, based on that, we're here now. We're going to be sticking around for a little bit. We got a few more questions to ask and go from there. Does that make sense? Did you leave work early? >> All right. Well, thanks for coming off early. >> Back inside the home, another officer asked Jeffrey a few final questions before Child Protective Services arrived to help rescue the child from the cage. >> Um, when when did you have this installed then? >> Uh, a few years ago. Probably 6 years ago. >> Oh, wow. Okay. So, he was strong at a young age. >> Oh, yeah. Yeah. >> Oh, yeah. >> Jeez, buddy. It's just part of his stming. He just >> Oh, yeah. Yeah. You know, that's that's Yeah, I get it. So, we actually have um >> you know, the the good thing about this is we can start a conversation and stuff. We have a team right now they're called crisis response team and their main goal is to help people like this in the situation having these challenges and things like that no matter what the age is because they're you know from from kids all the way up to um you know 80-year-olds you know so when we uh and they also help with like people as well but um they they come and help and provide uh resources um try to help out with finding a program a plan you know, things that can help out the family cuz it's I know you've grew he's grown up with it, you've grown up with him and stuff in this realm, >> but sometimes you get stuck in the same patterns and don't realize, you know, all of a sudden 2 years later there's more resources out there, but you haven't looked for resources for 2 years. Does that make sense? >> Yeah. >> So, there might be more resources out there that you're not even aware of. >> Okay. >> You know, um I know sometimes the schools are very good at helping with resources as well. Um but you know they have their protocols or people they work with and we have we're kind of independent in a sense that uh our team uh it's it's a newer team so it's probably why you haven't heard of it but they're they're newer at uh dealing with these situations or not with these situations dealing with helping people. So but they're able because they're new they're they're grabbing all this information everywhere they can come from. And one of the main officers has an adult child that's on the spectrum and so he he knows exactly what it's like, you know, between the different triggers and things like that and they might grow out of a trigger and develop another trigger, you know, so they're a really good team that understand the situation and could help you with uh additional tools. >> Okay, that makes sense. >> The officer kept the suspects talking until reinforcements arrived to speak with the 11-year-old boy, who clearly didn't seem happy with the situation. >> The bubble guppies Oh, the gate open. >> You have you beautiful voice. I love to hear you talk. Can you tell me something else? >> Gate open soon. >> Yes. >> Would that make you happy? >> Oh, I can't wait to make you happy, buddy. >> Gate open. >> He doesn't dance. He's just >> Hello. >> I know you want the gate open, baby. We're working on that right now. Sounds like there's a >> problem with that being >> okay. >> But yeah, I'll keep um >> um master bedroom's up there right at the very the top of the stairs to the left and there's the shotgun's open. So um if by chance I don't catch it. >> We're working on the gate right now. This angle captured what living inside the cage was like with boarded up windows and human waste smeared on the floor. >> Hey, >> can we talk about the words, you know? >> Yeah. The words, you know. >> You like the gate open. Why do do you like the gate open? >> Yes. >> Oh, do you like to be back here? >> Go back here. >> Here in this room. Do you like this room? >> Nobody. >> Hey, buddy. Do Do you like this room >> or do you >> out? [Music] >> Do you want the gate open? You like the gate open? Yeah. Soon. See you real soon. So guess what? >> Guess what? >> Soon. Soon gate open. >> Yeah. Soon gate open. >> Gate open. >> Yeah. Soon. >> Coming up. Emergency services arrived at the scene and granted the 11-year-old's request. >> Gate open. >> Get open. >> Gate open. That's right, bud. >> Soon. Gate. Open soon. >> You guys ready? We're ready, sir. >> And they're contained, right? >> Yes. >> Heads that way. >> Up. >> Yeah. Up bed. We're going to open gate and go to bed. Open gate. Sit bed. Open gate. Sit bed. Open gate. Sit bed. Battery level is low. >> We just wait. Hold on. Just wait one second. >> Yeah. Yeah. [Music] >> Ready to the bathroom. >> Yay. Here we go. Right to the bed. When the gate was opened, the child was put onto a stretcher to evaluate his physical condition. >> Oh god. Oh boy. [Music] >> Yeah, we're going to we're going to if it's cool, we'll both go in the back with you guys. Cool. Let's play. [Music] >> Jeffrey Scanland and Misty Scanland were both arrested and charged with one count of and one count of neg. Now to a case where a father stood beside officers as they uncovered the heartbreaking discovery of his daughter deceased. >> How are you related, sir? >> I'm the dad. >> Your dad. Okay. And then if you would just come unlock the door quick and >> Okay. >> She's gone. >> What? Madison was a 9 mm. >> Well, I thought she just passed away. >> She's dead. I was just told she just passed away. >> She's dead. >> On May 12th, 2022, 23-year-old Madison Clevenger failed to show up for work. Known for her dedication and passion as an EMT, her absence quickly raised concerns. When her colleagues couldn't reach her, they contacted her family who rushed to her home. But when they knocked on the door and rang the bell, there was no response at all. >> Sisters. >> Hello, puppy. Hi. >> How old is she? >> Uh, in her early 20s. >> Early 20s. >> Any of y'all know family member or anything? Oh, you're a family member. Okay. >> Sister. >> Sister. Okay. >> Got a cry bar or something so I can break in. >> Yep. Um there's a window unit back here. I think we can probably move that window unit. Not the not the closed one cuz it's clearly um screwed in, but the other one we could probably get in that uh far window unit back here. We can probably get through there. Growing increasingly anxious, the family called the police for assistance. Together, they managed to find a way into the house through a window. Madison's dad was the first to enter. >> How are you related, sir? >> I'm the dad. >> Your dad? Okay. [Music] >> And then if you would just come unlock the door quick. The dad came to unlock the front door and as he opened the door, his face revealed the nature of what he had just discovered. >> Okay. [Music] >> Okay. Yeah, [Music] she's gone. >> 211 212. >> She's 107. Okay, I'm going to need y'all to go out. I'm sorry. >> Sir, I'm sorry for your loss. >> Can we Can we step outside? >> When officers entered the room where Madison lay, she had no pulse and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The area was quickly secured as detectives and forensic teams moved in to investigate, documenting every detail. There were no signs of forced entry. a chilling hint that Madison may have known her killer. >> She's She's dead. I'm sorry. You can't go in. >> Can I see her? >> No, right now. I'm sorry. >> I'm sorry. [Applause] >> The detectives focused on her relationships, particularly her recent boyfriend, Hunter Bishop, as a possible suspect. >> She didn't say she didn't want anything. If she's pulled over, she's >> I've heard that name, too. >> Oh, he's friends with some real winners, too. >> Real winners, she said. Yeah, he is. >> I think and I think I've heard of him in that in that regard. Something about your baby mama calling me daddy just sits right with me. >> Well, this was from May 6. That's the last time he's posted anything. >> That was last week. >> N days ago. >> Yeah, he may have his settings set up that some of his posts don't post unless you're friends with him or something. >> Neighbors reported seeing Madison's boyfriend leaving her home the night before her body was discovered. Officers were already suspicious and his reaction when they spoke to him only deepened those suspicions. >> Let me see your hands, man. >> Hey, I'm Officer Ash with the police department. >> How's it going today? Officer >> doing good. Uh, you got your license, registration, and insurance. >> Uh, yeah. Driver's license. Is there anything in the vehicle I need to be worried about? Any bombs, guns, drugs, illegal contraband? Ain't got any firearms or anything in the in the no >> vehicle? Okay, Mr. Bishop, do you mind taking a step out of the vehicle for me? >> What? What? >> Well, I just want to make sure there's nothing in the vehicle I need to be aware about. >> What is it? >> Okay. Well, to be honest with you, you're wanted There it is. Uh, our CD is needing to speak with you. >> Who? Your what? >> Our C. Our detectives need to speak with you. >> So, I need you to step out of the vehicle and I just >> Okay. Um, can I turn my vehicle on? Roll my windows up. >> Yeah, we'll we'll let you turn it back on. I just need you to step back out here real quick cuz at this point at this point, you are being detained. You're not being arrested, but you are being detained. There was an incident that happened last night that you need to that our detectives need to clear up with you. Okay. Oh, do you have a warrant or anything? >> No, that's what I'm saying. Right now, right now, you're being you're just being detained. You're not being arrested. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> Make sure. >> No. >> What's that in the front of your pocket or front of your shirt? Where's the gun at? >> I don't have a gun >> there. Well, you have a holster. Where's the gun at? >> I don't have a gun. >> Well, where's the gun that's supposed to go on this? Let's see. >> Okay. Like I said, as of right now, you're just being detained for questioning. Okay. If you would go ahead and put your hands behind your back for me, I'm going go ahead and place you in handcuffs. So, there's not a gun in the in the in the vehicle. No. >> Do you mind if I take a look to make sure? >> Okay, there's no problem. All right. If you would to sit back here to my vehicle, like I said, we'll get you we'll get it all rode up and all this fun business here in a minute. Okay. And I'll let you get some stuff if you need something out of there. >> I don't want to leave my car here. >> No, no, >> it's going it's going to go with us one way or another. Either you're going to drive it or we'll have it towed one of the way. >> I can't afford to get it towed. Okay. >> Why am I sitting in the back? >> Just cuz you can't sit up front. Police obtained surveillance footage from around Madison's apartment and nearby areas to trace her boyfriend's movements. What they found was chilling. The couple had recently visited a gun shop together. With that discovery, suspicion turned into probable cause, painting a picture of premeditated betrayal. Armed with enough evidence, detectives brought Madison's boyfriend in. The interrogation room was now set to become the place where they'd uncover the truth. All right. Before we get to talk, we got piece of paper just like everything else. >> Am I Am I being charged with anything? I don't know what's going on. >> No, right now we're just doing our investigating part of why we wanted to talk with you today. >> No idea. >> Okay, that's fine. details as much as I can. Our officers went out to residence today to check on welfare of a buddy. She missed an appointment which apparently is unlike her. And when we finally was able to locate her, she passed away. At this point, we are trying to talk to everyone who has known her or has seen her previously and trying to put our pieces together. So that's why I'm talking about you today. Oh wow. >> Pay close attention to the boyfriend's reaction when told of his girlfriend's sudden death. >> Oh wow. >> Moments later, another detective entered the room. This kind of switch up is a common interrogation tactic designed to increase psychological pressure and catch the suspect off guard. >> Detective Ripper had to step out for a little bit. He's falling off some other stuff. Uh he asked some questions about the uh the traffic stop and everything cuz officers were telling me some some concerning things. They found a holster holster here on is empty. Was there a gun in it? [Music] >> There was no gun in it. >> Um would you carry a holster without a gun? You know, I I wouldn't want to lug this stupid thing around if I didn't have a gun in it. Um, why' you have a holster? Did you Madison go to Guns Plus and purchase a gun? >> I gave her some advice on picking something out for her, right? >> Did you guys go together? >> She shot it. Did you go out and shoot at the pond up there and got the targets and stuff? You spray paint to paint the targets and all that other stuff. You remember that? We have targets, too. >> Yeah. >> The detective first questioned the suspect about the gun, then got more direct, pressing him hard for the truth. >> You got a holster on you. You got a gun in your car. It's probably got your fingerprints all over it. I got a I've got a 9 mm uh casings from when you guys went shooting. I had the targets when you went shooting. I got stuff at the crime scene that says what killed Madison was a 9 mm. >> Well, I thought she just passed away. >> She's dead. >> I was just told she just passed away. >> She's somebody shot her. I mean, um, wow. Um, I was just told she passed away. >> She did pass away. >> Well, I guess I've never informed how. Yeah. I mean, we I believe we took my car out there to go. I guess you could have left it in the car. I mean, I was at my house all night last night. All right, >> coming up. The detectives switched once again as a third investigator entered the room. This time, the approach was emotional, hoping to break through the suspect's defenses. I want to know, am I dealing with the absolute cold blooded kid that dealt with somebody before and now lo and behold, you got a hold of another gun and just some things happen or am I dealing with the person that spread of the moment things happen? The simple fact is I've got you on video holding a gun. We've got statements from individuals saying you shot a gun. That's enough right there in that sound. So, what I want to know is who is the person I'm dealing with? Who am I dealing with, Mr. Did you? Absolutely not. Mr. Bishop, did you hear? Absolutely not. Everything you're telling me right now is not for sure. I don't have Look at me. Face me. Come talk to me. What happened? Start from the top. What time did you go over there yesterday? I don't know. I was sitt in the parking lot for I don't know 15 30 minutes. I don't know. We went over our house on the porch. Smell a couple cigarettes. >> Soon the detective then made the final squeeze for the truth. >> Should lay it all out. >> I'm going to go check on a few things, verify a few things, and I'll be right back. >> Okay. So, you're really good at your job. I want you to remember when I take I told you five I'm talking to you. Um I'm not going to write a statement for you because it is obvious that I'm making this some details that will be better displayed or showed in videos because there will be um McDonald's video footage and I can promise you we're going to be every bit of that. But I want your statement as far as what happened. Okay? This is your chance >> to write it all down, to lay it all down for me. This is so that you can make it crystal clear for me. So, give me just a second. I'll be right back. The case proceeded to trial with Madison's family attending every hearing in hope of justice. In the end, the jury found Hunter Bishop guilty, and he was sentenced to life in prison, ensuring he would never have the chance to harm anyone again. Moving on to the case, where officers responded to what appeared to be a set fire, but it turned out to be an attempt to cover up a disturbing crime. This looks like a body that's burning. What's up, doggy? You sure are hanging around here. Is that your person over there? On April 5th, 2023, police received a call about a reported fire. But as they investigated the scene, things took a horrific turn. >> Good. >> I need you to get fire, C. And uh 04 out here. This looks like a body that's burning. Upon arrival, officers discovered a body that was burned beyond recognition. >> Standby for fire. [Music] The officers were left with countless questions. Who committed this horrific crime and why? At first, the case seemed like a scattered puzzle, but then out of nowhere, a key piece of evidence surfaced. >> What's up, puppy? [Music] Meet Titan, a poodle mix investigators later confirmed belonged to the deceased. Using dental records, the victim was eventually identified as 26-year-old Mandy Rose Reynolds. What's up, doggy? You sure are hanging around here. Is that your person over there? That dog sure is hanging around, which makes me think. Yeah. >> Is there anybody at the station that could bring us the chip checker like at the fire station or over the PD? >> Titan reportedly kept barking and evading police all night. It wasn't until the next morning that animal control managed to catch him. Still in the same spot, unwilling to leave his owner's side. When they scanned his microchip, it led them to Mandy Reynolds. Detectives tried calling her, but only reached voicemail. Hours later, one detective got a call back from Mandy. Only that couldn't be possible. >> Hi. Um, I just got a message saying you guys found my dog. >> Uh, we believe so. So, what is your dog? Uh, he's a p he's a poodle retriever mix. >> Poodle retriever mix. >> Yeah, he's white. >> Okay. Where does the dog belong? >> Well, I was on my way to uh Witchah, Kansas, and I I live in San Marcos and uh Titan is his name. He just he just ran off. >> He ran off from where? Uh from uh Waco. >> Were you staying in Waco? >> No, I was on my way to Witchah. >> Okay. Then you made a stop somewhere. >> Yeah. At a rest area. >> What was your name? I apologize. >> My name is Mandy. The detective listened as the caller spoke, but soon realized something was off. It wasn't Mandy on the other end of the line. They were actually speaking to her cousin, 29-year-old Derek Denalt, a ninetime convicted felon and now the prime suspect in her murder. Days later, a license plate database flagged the victim's car in Witchah, Kansas. When officers located the vehicle and tried to initiate a traffic stop, the driver hit the gas, triggering a high-speed chase through the city. >> Running west. >> Running west. Yep. Take us to the backside. They've got three up here. But we're approaching the child right now. >> Take us to the back. >> The chase ended when the driver crashed in a grocery store parking lot. Surveillance footage then captured the suspect sprinting inside the store, desperate to escape. The suspect eventually tried to hide inside a shelf among canned goods. However, it wouldn't be long before police entered the store to track down their murder suspect. Is there anyone in there? >> Yeah. [Applause] >> Where'd he go? >> They say they towards the back, but I just didn't get [Applause] out. >> Give us a bunker in here if we can. >> He went down aisle. >> Go, go, go, go. We have people in the store. We have it. What's it? 283. We're in the store. Let's get a bunker in here. >> Over there. I hear something yelling. >> Come out. >> You make any movement, you will be killed. >> I got hands. >> Crawl out. Crawl out towards the sound of our voice. Somebody get less lethal. >> Somebody's gonna have to back off one direction or the other. >> Place lethal. >> Go ahead. >> Call out towards us. You're gonna have to move with me. >> Ready? >> Yep. >> Derek's hiding spot was unfortunately for him quickly located. >> Pull them out. >> 283 clear there. one in custody. >> We need to go with C. We need to go with cameras. Make sure you didn't toss anything. >> Radio. >> So then I went I turned it on my east side. Hey Jimmy, >> make sure you didn't toss anything. Just so we're clear, let's get EMS inside for the suspect. >> Five. >> Isle five might be withdrawn or ODM, sorry. >> Hey, brother. What'd you take? >> What' you take? Hey, >> take something pills. >> He might have taken something. >> All right, let's see. We get outside. >> Yeah, we got to go that way. >> Someone stay here and make >> the car, too. The car. >> Hey, can I get one of you guys to stay here so we can just down our >> Yes. >> Thank you. >> The lighter fell out of his pocket. >> Just making sure there's nothing else. I'm just if you just leave it real. >> Is that you calling it? >> Yeah. >> Good job, man. While police were now dealing with Derek, let's rewind a few days. Surveillance footage showed him at a Walmart buying a large plastic bin, a gas can, and a shovel. This was just one day before Mandy's body was discovered. According to prosecutors, Dererick used Mandy's grandmother's stolen gun to shoot her, placed her in the bin, and then carried out the horrific act that officers would later uncover at the scene. Derek Dalt was later sentenced to life in prison for the brutal murder of his cousin. As for Titan, Mandy's loyal dog, he was adopted by her best friend shortly after her death. Moving on to the case where officers responded to a scene where a father had lined up his three sons and taken their lives away from them. >> Show me your hands now. >> Stand up and walk. >> Stand up. Walk towards us. >> Stand up now. >> Stand up. >> Stand up. has staged an air to go ahead and fly whenever any can get your hands. >> On June 15th, 20123, officers received a chilling call. A man had allegedly taken the lives of his three sons, ages 7, 4, and three. >> Where's your emergency? >> Um I am I'm uh there's a girl uh running down the street that her stepfather is killing everyone and her family. Um, it's on the corner of uh where there's a body shop in the fire department. Do you know what road this is? >> Okay. What's your name? >> Give me the fire department. >> What's your name? >> My Do you know what road this is? >> Laura Lindell Road. >> Said what? >> It's Laura Lindell Road. >> Okay. And what did the female say to you? >> She says that her stepfather is killing everybody in her house. Officers rushed to the scene, unaware of what they'd encounter or whether the father intended to harm anyone else. >> Where's he at? >> He's shooter on the porch. >> Get him right here. Right here. You got him on the porch. >> We've asked. That's the last place we've been told. >> You show me your hands now. >> Stand up and walk towards us. >> Stand up now. Right. >> Walk towards us. Stand up with your hands up. >> We got a visual in the mail. Not showing his hand. I'm not following commands. >> Stand up now. >> Not showing hands or following commands. >> His name is Chad Dorman. Chadman. >> I know. We got to go. >> I know, but we can't first. And he's not complying. And you know he's a shooter. We got to find cover first. We ain't no good if we ain't safe ourselves. >> Hey. Hey. No, we need to come from this side where we can see him. Don't take cover behind her. We see him. We're going to approach from this side. We got cover >> right here. >> 29 and 60° right now. Show us your hands now. Stand up. Stand up. Stand up. >> Stand up now. >> Stand up. >> Stand the up. >> Going to go ahead and fly whenever any of us can >> get your hands 21. It's in there. >> Those guys can confirm that there's people that need first aid and that's the shooter. It's not. Upon making it to the house, the father sat on the porch with a rifle next to him used to perform the horrific crime. >> Can I roll over? I ain't going to hurt you. I ain't going I ain't going to hurt nobody. >> You got anything on you? No, I ain't got nothing, man. Phone. That's it. >> I ain't mad. I ain't I ain't nothing. >> Just make sure that dog don't come out. I don't think he'll bite you. Just don't reach for him and try to grab him and pet him. He won't bite you. >> What's going on, man? >> Nothing. Uh, can I stand up? It's kind of uncomfortable. >> I'm going to get you a running away. You can do whatever you want with me. [Applause] are staging at the station till now at 60 ft. >> Here. >> You the only one else inside the house. >> What? >> You the only one else inside the house. Sit down right here. >> My My daughter, she ran over to the fire department. >> Sit down. >> Uh it's my stepdaughter. Put him in the cage. >> That's a little That's a little >> Yeah, the road to main solid. >> Dur was taken into custody. A week later, an officer entered his cell to formally read him the charges. Sit up. Right there. >> Sit right there. Chad Dorman. All right. There's uh charges came out today for you. All right. I'm going to read through these. If you got any questions, give them to me at the end. All right. All right. >> Looks like count one uh aggravated murder says on about June 15, 2023 in the county of Claremont. uh did knowingly purposely with prior calculation designed cause of death in violation of higherrise code 290301 aggravated murder unclassified felony. All right. Victim under the age of 13. All right. Count two. Grand jury further finds are present that Chad C. Dormant on about June 15, 2023, County of Claremont did purposely with prior calculation to design cause a death of violation of a high-rise code 2903.01 aggravated murder victim under the age of 13. Count three, aggravated murder, Chad C. Dorman on about June 15, 2023. the county of Claremont did purposely with prior calculation design cause it of um their their initials. So I won't read the initial violation of high revised code 290321 aggravated murder unclassified felony victims under age of 13. >> Investigators later uncovered that Dur had lined up his three sons and then ended their lives. His motive remains unclear. He was charged with three counts of premeditated murder and held on a $20 million bond. Now we turn to the chilling case of a cop killer who in a shocking turn also took the life of his own mother during an exchange of gunfire with police. >> Sir, you need to open the door or you will go to jail. >> I am not going anywhere. >> You need to open the door or you will go to jail. >> I'm going to kick it. >> Go. >> On May 27th, 2020, officers responded to what appeared to be a routine court-ordered eviction. A tenant was expected to vacate the premises without incident. But what unfolded that day was anything but ordinary. >> Sheriff's office. >> Sheriff's office. Open the door, please. Are you sworn in under oath of office? >> Yes, we are. >> I have a judge's order, sir. >> Sheriff's Office, >> let me see your hands. >> Hello, miss. Where is he? >> Bring him out now. He's that way. >> All right. He jumped off the third floor balcony. >> Nope. He's got door lock. >> Two. >> Open the door. The door. >> Upon entering the apartment, officers discovered that the tenant, Salama Pendleton, had barricaded himself inside a room. At first, it seemed like a tense but manageable standoff until the situation suddenly spiraled into something far more dangerous than anyone anticipated. >> Sir, you need to open the door. You will go to jail. I am not going anywhere. >> You need to open the door or you will go to jail. >> I'm going to kick it. >> Go. [Applause] You can too. >> Yep. I'm dead, too. >> At this point, the suspect was still barricaded inside the room, and tragically, his mother had been struck during the exchange of gunfire. The suspect was armed with an AK74. >> Okay, clear that. Clear that. Get out of fire. >> Kelly's in the fire room at the end of the hall. I think the female is a 103. Huh. Salama, >> I'm not coming out. The situation hit a standstill once it became clear that Salama had no intentions of getting out from the room, making it impossible for the officers to get medical to attend to his wounded mom. >> Salama, I swear you will not be harmed if you put the rifle down and come out. >> I've already been harmed. You violated my constitutional rights. You broke into my home. >> You got permission to come in here. You broke in. >> We need I had >> You broke in. You're breaking in and you're trying to kill us. >> Okay. >> I have the right to protect myself and my family. >> Careful. >> The suspect kept insisting that it was the officers who had taken his mother's life. However, medical reports later confirmed that the fatal round came from a rifle matching the AK74 that Salama had been firing. I don't >> drop it. >> Drop it. >> Keep moving. >> Drop the gun. >> Drop it. >> Drop it. >> Drop it. >> Drop it. >> Shut fire. bird. >> We got officer now. The gunman also suffered non-life-threatening injuries. All three were rushed to Altru Hospital. Tragically, Officer Cody Holty was pronounced deceased upon arrival. He lives on in our hearts and memories. Rest in peace, Cody. At trial, Salama Pendleton was convicted of two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Moving on to a case where an officer risked his own life to save a boy who was being electrocuted. >> Stay back. >> Stay back.
