On what seemed like a normal day, police were called to a home after reports of a heated family disturbance. What started as an argument over the family dog quickly turned into a tense confrontation between a teenage boy and his stepfather. >> Hi. >> Hi. >> We got a phone call >> Uh-huh. >> saying some something was going on here. >> My husband and my oldest were fighting a little bit, screaming at him. And my oldest kind of shoved my husband a little bit. Um I left work and came home. >> All right. >> It seems good now. >> They're good now? Are you sure? >> Yeah. Yeah. No, yeah. And you can talk to them if you want to. >> Yeah. Can we >> Yeah. I don't know if my dog will let you in, but >> Can you put the dog somewhere like a bathroom or something then? >> Oh, I don't know. I mean, she'll let you, but she'll just bark and I don't know how well you can talk to her then. >> How's it going? Is he in here with you? What's your name? >> Michael. >> Michael? Roxy. >> Roxy. She won't bite. >> So, what what happened? Here, come on out here. What's going on? >> So, he was hitting and dragging on the dog trying to get her to go upstairs, so >> Okay. >> I started arguing with him because I didn't want him to hurt the family dog. Then he came out trying to hit me, so I pushed him in self-defense. Then he came after me again. >> Did that happen in the whole time? >> No. I did that to myself, punching a wall. >> Is it hurting anyway? Like, do you need the EMS to come here and check you out? What about your dad? >> your hand or anything? >> No, I'm fine. I did it to myself. >> Well, do you need him to check it out? >> No. It's okay. >> All right. Where's your Is it your stepfather or your your dad? Could he come out here so that I could talk to him? >> I'm not trying to get bit by a big dog, so >> Yeah, not really. >> I'll wait. >> Basically, the determination is >> What's up, brother? Can I talk to you down here? What's your first name? >> Brandon. >> Brandon. My boy. Brandon, what's going on? Well, >> Michael dead. >> The boys, yeah. Okay, so there's another one of her sons. >> There's Yeah. Michael dead. >> Are they your sons, too? >> Tucker is. The four are, one's not. >> Okay, and the one that's not is Michael. >> Michael. >> Okay. >> He's the oldest. >> So, you guys exchanged some words over what? >> Over the dogs, that I'm not helping, that I'm not listening, that I'm not cleaning their room. It's [ __ ] disgusting in there. And we have like a mice problem right now. We're trying to clean that up. They won't listen. >> Pulled outside, all the mice want to come in. >> I It's just It's It's hell. So. >> Um so, you're saying it was verbal, any type of physical contact in any way, shape, or form? >> No, I mean, he did put his hands on me, but it was nothing like that was bad. Like, we never hit each other or nothing like that, but >> Okay. >> Nothing bad. >> Okay, cuz he's saying that you hit him. >> I never hit him. >> Dude, listen, let me tell you something, all right? >> I never hit him. >> York State, parents are allowed to discipline their children. >> Yeah, I know that, but I would never hit them. >> And I'm not the person that's going to show up and say that discipline wasn't discipline, but discipline reaches a certain point where >> All right. >> you know, I mean, there can be excessive, too, right? I'm not seeing any type of injury. He's not saying that he's injured. He's >> totally untrue, though. >> Okay, do you need EMS, anything like that? You're fine? >> No, this is crazy. >> Listen, >> I never would do that. >> We're cops. We have to show up. We have to ask questions. We have to do our >> Right. I I appreciate that. Like, I would never ever ever ever hit them. They're They're my kids. I love them to death. >> Sure. >> You know? >> Um grab his information. >> Yep. Yeah. I mean, I I don't even I've spanked their butts in years. >> Uh-huh. So, how did the physical altercation start? >> I asked him to come get the dog, he wouldn't. So, then he was just saying [ __ ] saying [ __ ] saying [ __ ] And >> up in your face while you were saying [ __ ] >> up on top of the stairs and then he said some [ __ ] and I said, "Okay, you want me to come get me." So, I walked up the stairs and then he put his hands on me and then that was like I got the elbow. He ended up calling Rachel. Rachel came home from work. She left the nursing home to [ __ ] see what was going on here. >> are into it with each other. How does it end? How does like that stop? And does he run into his room, shut the door? >> his room. Tucker went into his room and I went back downstairs cuz my kids downstairs were crying. Like, this is just crazy. >> What was your name, bud? >> I'm Brandon. >> Brandon what? >> Schull. >> Schull, S H U L L. We just We just have to make sure right that it's a disciplinary thing. >> Yeah, like it was not We're not a fist fight. It was just whatever, I don't know. Verbal more of verbal abuse than anything. And he he towers me, so I'm kind of scared of him, actually, to tell you the truth. >> You know what? >> He's a big boy. >> a feeling that even my son's going to do that to me someday. >> big boy. Like, he I mean, you're a big boy. >> Sure. I've been told that before. >> And your son's bigger than you? >> Not yet, but possibility someday he could be, right? >> he's only 14. >> Yeah. >> Well, he's tall. >> We're getting bigger as a human race. >> Oh, yeah. Right. >> Let me go in and talk to mom. >> Okay. >> Um >> Yeah. >> basically the determination that you come to is whether or not this is a disciplinary thing or whether you feel that it was something more, you know. >> So, but I me and myself, like there was nothing bad like that was happening over it. Like, I don't know. I mean, we [ __ ] and we scream at each other. That's basically about a lot of what goes on, you know. >> Yeah. Yeah, no, it's >> didn't want nothing to do with him. >> you've been your the entire time >> you know my whole life and then like it seemed like every time he gets mad he always throws the I'm not his father thing at me, you know, and then that kind of hurts me because I've been in his life forever. >> Yeah, that's that's a tough thing to deal with. I mean it's it really is. >> And I like It was just over the [ __ ] dog. Over the dog. All I wanted him to do was just get the dog out of my way so I could clean, you know. That that was my my my thing and then he just stands there and he just runs his mouth and runs his mouth. >> Now he is 14. I mean it's that age. I I did it at 14. >> But then it's the group of kids that he hangs out with, too. And that's I mean there's some of the kids that he hangs out with are pretty bad. >> Have you have you talked to the resource officer or anything about that? >> what I I told him I wanted to do. >> I mean that might be your first step and hopefully outgrows it. >> Right. He's a He's a good good kid and like we're trying to get him situated because he's in the P-Tech program and he's in the welding and all that and then like we try telling him this is your future, this is your job. Like not many kids get into that. So then he disrespects me and he misses the buses and all this stuff, you know, like he I don't know. We're just me and him butt heads a lot. That's all I can say. >> going to happen. I mean I got I got an 11-year-old daughter and that's all she does, butt heads. >> I'm I mean I'm glad I got boys. >> Yeah, I got yeah. >> But at the same time a girl probably wouldn't be so bad, but then again once they get older and they get that attitude. >> Oh, yeah, for sure. For sure. >> But >> For sure. I uh Has this ever happened before? >> Like as far >> as far as having police here or anything? >> No, no, this is the first time ever. No, normally we're trying to break stuff up down the road. That's usually the people down the road that are fighting, Tony and the chick down there. >> Oh, they're out of there now. >> They're gone now? >> Yep. >> All of them? >> Uh Tony and Tony's the girl or they're over on different street. >> Sweet. >> Yeah. >> So. >> They were cuz they had my boys involved in their incident over the summer where uh >> Mhm. Yeah, I heard about it. >> the baseball bat. Yeah. >> Nice to meet you. Sorry under these circumstances. Sorry. >> Should I stay here or we good? >> Uh you're This is your house, brother. >> Okay. >> All right. Here, just just step out here for a second. Just stop here. All right. So, all I'm going to do is a DIR form. This is more discipline than anything. >> Okay. >> Um try not to let it get to that level. Cuz I mean, if it takes someone a step >> All right, we're going to have to do something. >> Right. Right. >> Um so, I have to do the the domestic incident report just to file it. >> Okay. >> Um do you want to give me a statement? You don't have to. I have to do it anyway. So, it's okay if you don't. >> What are you What are you meaning like a statement? >> what happened. >> Uh yeah, I can if you want. >> Okay. All right. >> makes it easier. Whatever you want. >> All right. No, it's up to you. >> I mean, so. >> You don't have to. >> Okay. >> If you don't want it on file or if you don't want a statement on file or nothing, you just want to let it >> Yeah. >> roll. Done. >> Yeah, that's fine. >> Do it that way. >> Yeah, let's do it that way. Okay, what do you need from me? >> Nothing. >> You're good. >> I need a signature here in a few minutes, but that's it. >> Okay. >> Okay? >> Yep. >> Other than that, uh yeah. Try to keep your heads cool and >> Yes. >> stay separated and go do something for a little while. >> going to. >> Maybe come back and have a decent dinner or something. >> know what I mean? >> Exactly. Maybe we should go out to dinner as a family. >> That's probably something that would probably help us out, you know? >> help. Maybe ask him what what he would like or something. Okay. Yep, you'll be back in a few minutes. >> Yep, just give me a few minutes to start filling this out and >> All right. >> We're back with you.
