Treat me with a little bit of respect. >> You treat me like you treat me your pissed off at you for causing all this crap. I didn't cause any crap. >> Don't do that. >> Do not turn on me, man. I'm not doing >> overdoing everything. Relax. >> Well, no. You haven't seen nothing yet. >> I know. Why are you pushing all this? >> I didn't do one thing. I made a decision. >> Put it in your Hold on a second. Don't take my money. >> The suspects could have been engaging in skip scanning, a classic selfch checkckout trick where you deliberately forget to scan certain items. But since they insisted the microwave rang up at just a dollar barcode, swapping seemed like the more likely con. >> You in my house now. Okay. >> Why you yelling, bro? >> Because you ain't listening. You in my house now. You follow my rules. Sit down. >> Holy crap. >> You guys want to be disrespectful, you guys can spend the you can spend the weekend in jail. How's that? You are talking your way into the a weekend at the score jail. >> What are you talking about? >> I just said so. You understand English? >> Quiet. Please >> quit talking to me. Please. You're You're talking to me. Okay. >> You made something very simple to a customer. Okay. >> I said, "Let me pay you." >> No, you can't just take something for a dollar and go, "Oh, I got caught. I'm going to go pay the other 79 bucks at the top of the box." Oh, >> that's not how it works. >> Microwaves and other small appliances are prime targets for theft because they're easy to move and can fetch decent resale value. Some Walmart models even top $200. But for this suspect to claim it was all a mistake means they honestly expected anyone to believe a microwave costs a single dollar. >> So, it asked you for the warranty for the bed. When you try to scan the microwave, it gave you that red error signifying that it wasn't scanned. It said that for the pop for the soda. >> No, it didn't. It was for the It was for the microwave. It's clear right here. Look, I'll show you. >> Okay. Well, I didn't understand what I didn't understand that. I didn't understand what you're saying. I really don't understand. >> No, you're scanning. >> But go back to me where I'm scanning the stuff. It shows me scanning everything I try to scan. >> Here, look. Check this out. >> Okay. >> All right. You're scanning. I'm scanning. >> It gives you the error. The security guard pulled a classic deescalation move, assuring the suspects he wasn't outright calling them thieves or accusing them of stealing. >> See this? >> I didn't say no. >> Then you go scan the bottom. >> No, but I'm not saying it cuz I don't know that the bottom is my bed. I scanned my bed. I didn't try to do what you're saying. That's not true. If you look at it, bro. >> Yeah, but I'm just saying you can see it, man. I can do what you're saying. >> Sir, let me talk to you real quick. I need you to understand something. We're not calling you thieves. We're not saying that you are stealing. Our job is that the moment that you pass that last point of sale and you take an item that's not on your receipt, listen, it is considered theft. I'm not calling you a a thief. All I'm saying is that the moment it passes for me, whether it's on your if if it's not on your receipt, >> I didn't look at that. I completely didn't pay that no attention, bro. I thought that. >> Unfortunately for you, when it comes to that, it doesn't matter anymore. The security guard here used a classic deescalation technique, saying he wasn't necessarily calling them thieves or accusing them of stealing. The cop probably did this to reduce the tension in the room and try to get a little cooperation. >> And like I said, when you guys told me the price of it, I get it. Okay, that ain't the price, but here, pay the price, cuz that's what I was trying to do. My intent was to pay for what I bought. I didn't come here to steal with the kid and I'm a thief. No, man. It's not true. I'm 50ome years old, you know. I like the treatment and you're yelling at me, dude, like from a kid. Irritates the hell out of me. >> Who you talking to? >> I'm talking to whoever he's listening. >> That's not sweet. >> You're 50s something years old. >> Don't give me to stare down, buddy. >> Just calm down, please. >> No, cuz it hurt you, but just please. >> It hurts kind of. >> Oh, it hurts the [ __ ] out of me, too. >> What? What does >> Just You do you. People just try to >> rationalize everything. >> That's what you think. That's what you're doing. You think you're doing that? >> You think you you developed that method of shoplifting on your own? >> You I'm not sharp. >> The male suspect wouldn't let up, arguing non-stop and turning a simple interview into a battle of wills, while the female suspect played it cooler, showing a bit more willingness to cooperate. >> Everybody is clear. Randy, you do have uh some history of organized retail theft, though. Yeah, you saw that >> this is a trespass warning saying that you cannot come back to this particular Walmart for a period of 3 years. Correct. >> I don't know what he wanted but >> it's better than the it's better than the alternative cuz the alternative is his is permanent I think. Right. >> Yeah. >> Okay. Good. Sign here. That's just saying I'm giving you a copy. You don't have to sign it if you don't want it. >> It says I can't come here for 3 years. for three years. It's standard. Everybody that comes through this office gets one of these. >> You know, theirs is it's particular to this Walmart. Be honest with you. >> The one of ours is for every Walmart. So, you guys can still shop at a different Walmart >> until we get this courtship. >> Organized retail theft involves groups stealing items often for resale, sometimes backed by largecale criminal networks. So, this was either an unbelievable coincidence or the suspect had just been caught red-handed yet again. >> Stand up. If you decide to break this trespass, you'll probably be facing more charges. If you decide to come back to Walmart and steal as little as I can, >> steal. I >> I'm not saying you're stealing, man. I'm just giving you the details. Listen up, please. If you come back to Walmart and if you steal as little as I can, you're going to be facing failure. Okay. Not only are you trespass, but you're stealing and that's considered >> Last week was so easy. >> Giving you the details. >> Everybody just said acquies. >> I wasn't here last week. >> Oh, yeah. what this means. Understand that >> everybody's just >> acknled for >> the couple was ultimately charged with retail theft. With today's advanced store security, shoplifting is harder than ever. And when thieves do roll the dice, the cops are usually right there to shut it down. Stealing from stores rarely pays off. Modern security catches most thieves fast. Honesty is always cheaper than a criminal record. On July 27th, 2025, police responded to a Walmart after loss prevention reports a woman concealing clothing and dog food, scanning only select items. Surveillance clearly confirms the theft. >> That's good, sir. Good, sir. Thank you. We >> got Marie Adney inside. She's got a basket full of stuff. Um, >> yeah. Has she checked out already? >> She's cashing out right now. So, she she's about to walk out. So, my guy's going to make contact with her. >> Okay. >> She's right here on 29. >> Okay. >> She's got a basket full of stuff. >> The suspect identified as Marie Lackey spent nearly 3 hours shopping. She carefully scanned some products while hiding others behavior Walmart security recognized from her prior thefts at other stores. >> She had a bunch of She was in here for like 3 hours shopping. >> Okay. She had a bunch of clothes folded. Um, and so what she was doing was she she scanned the outside item, but there was like three or four folded in between. >> She had a bunch of uh dog food. >> Oh, frequent shopping. >> Yeah, I I know Kohl's has dealt with her a lot. That's who sent us her information. >> Okay. >> Um, she usually stages the carts and has other people come in and get it, but in this case, >> at the exit, officers stop Lackey and escort her to the loss prevention office. She is read her Miranda rights and formally placed under arrest for shoplifting. Stop. Stop. Bomb. Boter. Heat. Heat. Hello, Mary. >> Yeah, just follow us to the office over here. >> Well, I can pay for it. >> Well, it's Yeah, it's too late now. [Music] >> If you guys want to go. >> Yeah, we'll get everything over here. Do you have any idea what you need? >> Do you have any other items in your in your purse or collect that you didn't pay for? [Music] >> Do you guys want to do you have your receipt as well? That way you guys can see what you paid for. >> So just uh before before we uh start any other I'm just going to read you something. Just cuz you're not free to leave, okay? Doesn't necessarily mean you're going to go to jail or nothing like that. Okay? Right now you're not free to leave. Okay. You have the right to remain in time. Anything you say can, will be used to consume the court for law. You have the right to talk to a lawyer. Have to be present with you while we while you are being questioned. If you cannot afford or hire a lawyer, someone will be appointed to you to represent you before any questioning if you wish. You can't. >> Lackey admits she might have missed scanning a few items, but insists she paid for most of her cart. A review proves otherwise. Over $538 worth of unpaid merchandise, a felony under state law. tell you that any time to exercise his rights and not answering my questions or make any statements. You understand me, right? If you want to talk to me. >> Okay. >> So, yeah, right now you're not free to leave. You're basically under arrest for shoplifting. Um, so what happened? >> I don't know. Like I just I just I kind of just always like separate them and stack them and I don't know. Officers remind her of Walmart's zero tolerance policy, a lifetime ban from every Walmart location nationwide with only a slim chance of corporate review after a year. >> I tried to scan, but I probably did let some of them go through like on [Music] >> All right. >> So, you basically just >> I paid for most of it, but I know I probably didn't do >> Okay. Well, I mean, that's why we're here. they saw you on the cameras. So, depending on the dollar amount, um, we'll just give you a citation. If they want you trespass, we're going to have you trespassed. Um, like I said, depending on the dollar amount. If it's not a felony amount, we'll give you that citation. >> 500 500 500 or more. >> Well, it's for the items that you didn't scan. >> Yeah, >> it's for the items that you didn't scan. So, as long as it's not 500 or more, we'll just cut you a citation and then um I'm sure they're going to want you trespass. So, we'll just have you trespass and you won't be allowed on any Walmart. Okay? And trust me, they're really good at what they do. That's all they do all day. Check cameras and people. So, if you decide to go to another Walmart, all this information is going to go to another Walmart. They're going to check you out there. They're going to see you there. And then after that, you will go to jail for assessing. >> Okay? Just because we just advised you right now that you're not allowed at any Walmart here in Las Cruus. At least I know it's probably in El Paso, too, but >> yeah, I'll get this to keep the stuff that I paid for and all that. >> Yeah, you'll get to keep what you paid for just what you didn't pay for. Obviously, that's what you're going to be charged with because you shoplifting. >> Can I pay for it still if I >> if you want to take it if they let you? I mean, >> I think after Yeah. >> No. >> Yeah. So, I mean, >> you had a chance to >> I mean I mean it is what it is. We don't take any offense to it, but then there's consequences and >> unfortunately you're not allowed in any Walmarts now. Okay. And it's a lifetime ban. Okay. So, unless you talk to their management and then >> I believe after maybe like a year or so, you can call corporate and then they decide whether you can >> uh not yet. We still have the dollar amount to see. >> As long as I'm not owner. >> Yeah. I mean, just cuz you've been cooperative. Um, I'm not I'm not guaranteed. >> Records show she paid about $170, but unpaid items exceeded $500. Officers explain that Walmart surveillance is extensive, making it nearly impossible for shoplifterss to slip through unnoticed. >> See that if you go shoplift at another store, the same thing's going to happen, right? Just with me. Uh, just cuz you've been cooperative with me and whatnot, I'll cut you that citation. You still have to go to court for it, obviously. Oh, >> like quite quite a bit of stuff. >> That's the one. Yeah, >> that so far that's all she's paid for it. >> Just this? >> Yeah, but we're we're She paid for it. It was 170 bucks for stuff. She did pay. >> Oh, okay. Okay. >> We're just trying to dissect. >> And I don't know, Marie, if it's the first time you do it or not, but like my partner said, they're they do this for a living, you know? So, they're good at what they do at the first. [Music] >> Yeah. And I mean, you're not the first one that does it. You won't be the last. But you know, Walmart has pretty good security cameras. So, >> this is the only stuff she paid for. >> So, yeah. >> Do you know what what time what time she came in? >> I started watching her around 10:50. So, she might have been here 10:30 or so. >> Yeah. If if she scam, she's she stole more than she scanned. You know what I mean? I don't know if it's the first time it you do it or not, but or it's the first time you had you you got caught. But I mean, hopefully it teaches you a lesson to not do it again cuz like I said, this time, you know, you weren't placed in handcuffs or, you know, you weren't taken to the unit or anything like that. But I can't guarantee you that next time if you do do it, that's the same routine is going to happen. You know, it just depends. Yeah. I I don't know either. That's why they're they're checking right now. But >> that's why I like I know like for some of them I just like shirt $4, you know, like cuz I didn't know what it's not that I was trying to just >> Lackey insists she wasn't trying to steal everything, blaming a little voice that told her she could get away with it. Officers confirmed the theft total before tax was $558, requiring felony arrest. >> It is still I know he wasn't. Well, I was trying to figure all these that stupid little voice in your ear that says, "Hey, you could get away with it." >> Yeah. And like I said, they do this for, you know, for a living. So, >> they're good at what they do. So, >> yeah. >> Even if you think you're going to get away, most of the time you don't. There's times maybe cuz they're not watching the cameras, but most of the time everybody gets caught. >> How many? $558. >> Is that with text or without >> before Texas? >> Yeah. So, I mean, >> yeah. >> So, unfortunately, you are going to be placed in handcuffs and take it to my unit. I don't know. Do you want to call somebody right now? >> Yeah. >> For to pick up your dog. That way, we don't turn it over to animal control. >> And I mean, >> there's no way like I could pay for some of it and >> how long will it take for them to get here? Because I mean obviously we can't >> not >> we can't wait that long. Do you want to get that started? >> They're snowing it all around me. >> Ma'am, you shop with $50,000. >> Okay, that's it. If a little bit less than that, but I I mean there's no way they agreed to let me pay for something. >> There's nothing. >> Sir, >> you wouldn't let me at all. nothing. Like like I told you, look, you might be going through some hard times, but like stuff that you do, there's going to be consequences to it. And unfortunately, today you're going to go jail for it. I mean, hopefully you won't do it later on, but I mean that's I know it sucks, but when it comes to being a felony level, we can't turn back on that. >> Can I just give him like my car keys and all of that? Yeah. Okay. Yeah, Michael just give me my car keys and my purse and stuff, but I just leave. >> She also had her dog with her during the incident, distracting shoppers while she concealed items. Police arranged for someone she knows to pick up the dog so it doesn't go to animal control. >> It's okay, Papa. You're going to go with Chad, Papa. Okay. I'm going to leave him really loose. Okay. You've been really cooperative. >> Do you guys need anything else for me? >> Good. >> All right. Swing over and put the seat belt on. Okay. Marie Elizabeth Lackey is officially charged under New Mexico statute 30- 16 to 20 with one count of felony shoplifting. Her case is referred to the district attorney backed by surveillance footage and receipts as evidence. Stealing may seem small at the moment, but once it crosses the felony threshold, the consequences can change your entire life. No matter how clever you think the plan is, surveillance always catches up in the end. After you see the next case, you may want to think twice. It's shocking. And for more videos, subscribe to Law Zone if you liked this. >> Okay, let's try this again. How does the name on your license appear? Because you're not coming back with no record. >> On January 1st, 2025, police responded to Target for an active shoplifting incident. The suspect, a woman in medical scrubs, because nothing says, "Trust me," like looking like you just left a hospital, caught stuffing merchandise into a coat. What the [ __ ] [Music] Hello officer. >> Hello. >> Sorry. >> Hi. >> Um, I didn't mean to do this. I can think. >> She's a registered nurse with about $300 in unpaid goodies. She tries the I'll pay now strategy, but officers explain that's not how theft works. You don't get to dine and dash and then offer your credit card when caught. >> Okay. So, uh she has her purse around $300 worth of unpaid merchants. You just take everything out. Okay. >> No, I'll pay for it. >> Yeah, take it out. >> All right. No, I was going to give it to my somebody. Okay, I'll pay for it. I promise. >> Right now, it's too late, right, to pay for it. You already tried stealing it. No, but I can always pay, right, sir? >> No, you cannot. >> Huh? [Music] >> But I'll pay for it. >> Have a seat, please. >> Have a seat. Do you have any ID on you? >> No, I don't have >> You don't have any identification? >> It's in my car. >> It's in your car? >> Okay. What kind of car do you have? >> Paper. >> What kind of car do you have? >> Just don't ruin my name. >> Huh? >> Just don't ruin my name. >> Don't ruin your name. Yeah. >> Okay. >> I promise. I promise. >> You ruined your own name, so I'm going to need your name. >> Have a seat. Do you have anything on your person that may uh hurt anyone? Like needles, >> knives? >> Don't Don't listen. Put everything down. I didn't ask you to do that. Take off that jacket for me. Put it over here. Don't go in your pockets. Listen to my instructions. Okay. >> Okay. Stand up. Take that jacket off. Place it right over here. Right over here. Place the jacket over here. >> Right there. >> Right there. Turn. Put your hands up. Turn around. >> Okay. Have a seat. >> Have a seat. >> All right. >> Is this your jacket? >> I'm sorry. Yes. >> It's mine, too. >> Is this yours? Yeah. >> No, that's mine. >> It's brand new. >> Yeah. >> Stop lying, man. Why you lying? >> No, bro. I put it over there in the back. >> I'll pay for it. >> Those are Ray-B bands. I think it's probably good. >> Yeah. Take a picture of you with just my records. >> But there always says like you can pay for No, not at Target. Only only a Walmart. murder. >> She argues that other stores looking at you Walmart let people pay after being busted. She throws in the it's New Year's. I have a patient and it's a birthday gift. Excuses for good measure. None of them work. >> Okay. Target's really serious about the and all that stuff. >> I know, but there's always you can pay for it at Walmart. Not in here. No, you cannot pay for it no more. Okay. >> Well, can can I resolve it? >> Um, >> it's new year, >> so please. >> I know. New year. Give me. >> Um, so okay. >> No, I'm not. I don't speak Spanish. >> You speak Spanish? Where are you from? >> Philippines. >> Philippines. Okay. When you listen, I can I can pay for this. I'm professional. >> So, I'm professional, too. And I got to do my job. >> Sumaya. Sumaya is your middle name. >> Yeah. Oppo. >> Huh? >> Yes, sir. >> Okay. And your last name is uh >> Yeah. Listen, I know this stuff. I know that when you do that, you can always pay. So, don't go through too much. It's new year. Very sorry. >> Please. >> I don't care. >> Please, sir. >> No, this you're saying $300. $300. >> I'll pay you for >> What is your address? >> Do me a favor. Don't argue with him. >> Okay. >> Okay. Everybody has a job to do. Right. >> Okay. >> This is his job is to catch people who steal. Right? If the company has an ordinance that they're not going to let anybody go past a certain amount, then that's his job to continue and follow that ordinance. >> Okay? >> It's not yours to dictate whether or not he could let you go or now you want to pay for all the [ __ ] that you took. >> Okay? >> Can I pay for it? Cuz I have to give it to somebody tonight, please. >> Mhm. >> It's a birthday. I still have a patient to go. So, >> if I can pay for it, I know >> what what what do you do for a living? >> I'm a nurse. >> You're a nurse? >> She hands over her ID, says she's from the Philippines, and insists she's never been arrested for theft before. Officers finish the paperwork, and load her into custody. >> A registered nurse or >> I'm a registered nurse. >> Registered nurse. Okay. What brings you over here? >> No, I have a patient nearby here in um North Latro. So, I go past >> North Latro. Yeah. >> Okay. >> I didn't mean to like what I said. I'll pay for it. It's New York. I know Walmart does that, but I know. >> How many times have you been arrested for uh retail theft? >> Never. >> What about theft in general? No. >> Just first time cuz I'm rushing. >> Okay, let's try this again. How does the name on your license appear? Because you're not coming back with no record. >> Okay, >> we can go to my car. What? >> I want to pay this because I want to >> Hold on a minute. What? >> Mari Somaya. >> Okay. Is the name Somaya? >> Middle name. >> Is that spelled out in your license? >> S U M A Y A. That's Filipino. >> Can you give me a copy of the video and stuff? >> Yes, sir. You have you have a USB? >> Uh, yeah. >> Yeah, I can put it in there. >> And also, uh, do you have any complaint forms? >> Yes, I do. Are they the new ones? >> Yes, sir. >> Okay. [Music] >> Yes. The same the same way you get the number. The same. Turn around. All right, let's go. >> I'm not running. >> Huh? >> What is it? >> Very sorry for me. >> You're very sorry for you? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> I'm married to a cop. >> You're married to a cop? No, you're not. >> I am. New Hampshire. Starky. Look it up. >> New Hampshire. >> Yeah. >> Where's that in the the state of New Hampshire? >> Oh, okay. So, he's not a cop anymore. She mentions being married to a former US Air Force member, expresses regret, and still gets hit with a felony retail theft charge. She's booked, then released with a court date. >> I used to be US Air Force. >> Huh? >> He used to be US Air Force. >> He used to be reserved. >> Yeah. >> My son. >> Meanwhile, across the store, Target Loss Prevention has another woman detained. This one with $664 in unpaid items. She thinks she'll just fill out some forms and be on her way. >> She would simply complete paperwork and be released. But officers arrived. >> But it was okay. >> It wasn't my fault. You >> said you weren't calling the cops. >> You said that alerted them. So, but you have to sign right here. >> I'm not signing a blank piece of paper. >> All right. Well, I mean, >> she's furious because she was told the police wouldn't be called. Staff say she was seen shoveling items into a giant bag and walking past the checkout like she owned the place. Target asks for her arrest. >> Yeah, clearly. >> Like, thanks for lying to me, dude. >> Do you have your ID or driver's license? >> No, I just gave him the information I had. I don't have an ID. I'm trying to catch you. This is crazy. I didn't know that he promised he wasn't calling the cops, but not >> I wasn't stealing. Just steal, sir. But you were still right. How much your last name? >> 664. >> All the shopping carts. >> Am I going to jail right now? >> I don't know. >> Are you guys arresting her? >> I don't know. >> What do you mean? You know, how do you not know? >> Cuz I don't know what happened yet. I have to talk to them. I'm just asking you for your information. >> I just want to know if I'm in >> Yeah, I know you're in a huge rush. I'm not going to rush that. >> I don't know if you're going to jail. I haven't talked to him yet. >> Okay. >> Have you heard me talk to anybody but you since I walked in here? So, slow down. >> Okay. >> You're not going anywhere till we're done. >> Yeah. Clearly. >> Clearly. Uh, what's going on? Busy. She was shot coming in, had a huge bag. She started putting merchandise in her bag as she was walking the floor. Found her bag. Then after that, she came up to the front, passed all the check lanes, went downstairs without paying for it, and that's when we brought her. >> Okay. How much stuff has been taken? >> 664. >> Okay. What do you guys want done then? Do you want her arrested? >> Yeah. >> Really? >> Wow. >> Can you take your purse off? Stand >> up. >> Officers tell her to drop the bag and get ready for a search. She refuses to sign paperwork. bad mouths target employees but eventually admits, "Yeah, I did it." >> Drop the bag. We'll have check bags around your bag. Okay. >> Okay. >> I have a nap. Can I pull this out? >> Too, >> huh? >> We'll explain everything later. >> Oh my god. >> I want my bag and my purse. >> Thank you. Nothing illegal in there, right? That we have to worry about, >> guys. We're going to search. >> You have anything on your person? There's my female officer that searches you and lock up. >> I'm not signing that piece of paper cuz there's nothing on that piece of paper. >> Okay. >> So, got like that. >> Okay. >> He lied to me. Obviously, not that it matters. I did something wrong. You know what I mean? Like, I get it. But that's not how it played out. >> Other elf, right? No, >> cuz we're going to have a female search. >> Oh my god, that was so rude. He's [ __ ] dude. Target sucks. First of many offenses. I'll probably have throughout my almost experience and career. Dude, God, I'm sorry, but I didn't do the crime, so I guess I got to do I hope they don't [ __ ] make me spend the night in jail tonight. >> She spends the night in jail, also charged with felony retail theft, and is released the next day with her own court date. Stealing, no matter the excuse or profession, carries serious legal consequences. Once court payment offers won't erase the crime or prevent arrest.
