Like I said, when I first came in, I hit the corners thing in there and there was a lady crunched out looking at something and I almost hit her. A pair of uh toilet clippers came up. I almost hit her. >> Okay. >> I just >> Okay, surely it's going to be a lot better if you're just honest with me. >> Okay. Yeah, I put them in there. >> Okay. >> Just two. >> Yeah. >> Okay. Cuz they told me you're on probation. >> Yep. So, is there anything your agent needs to know that you've been >> No, you can call her and tell her that I have police contact. >> Well, I'm going to call her and tell her that you have police contact. >> Um, just wait here. I'm going to have you hang out with my partner. >> The woman denied using any substances and tried to back up her claim by telling the officers a story, hoping it would somehow work in her favor. >> Are you on medication for the back surgeries? >> No, I don't take any medication at all. >> Okay. because I I was I was an addict and so I quit taking everything. >> Okay. >> And then I was in the hospital last week. >> Okay. >> And I had um infected kidney. So, here's the deal, Shirley. What happens with these is you're going to get a city ordinance citation for theft. Um, we have them, so we're not requesting restitution, but I do have to take you down to the jail, get you booked in, and then you're released. >> It's a book and release process. >> Um, your back hurts. What I'm going to do is I'm going to go get a transport belt. Keep your hands in front of your body >> so I can be more comfortable as we transport you to the jail. >> Or bat, are you getting that? Can you take >> Yep, I'm good. Thank you, Shirley. Before transporting the suspect, the officer took a moment to explain the situation to his partner, making sure she fully understood what had happened and what the next steps would be. So, like I told her, it's a book and release. Book her in, she's free to go. There's no bond or anything like that that you got to post. It's a real quick process. Um, I'll get you a ticket and you'll have a court date. You um actually, I don't think it's even mandatory since there's no restitution, but you have a court date with the ticket. All right. Load that stuff in. >> Yes. >> Come over here. >> Do you know where the jail is? Are you going to go pick her up? >> Yes, sir. >> Okay. Do you know where to go? >> Uh the one off of the name of the street. She claims she was just looking for her cousin, the one with the money, and definitely wasn't planning to steal. >> But other than that, like I said, you guys be arrested. I can take care of. I see her downstairs right there by the escalator. I'm telling her to come pay for the stuff. I'm walking down. They said, "Come here." I come here. I'm applying with you guys. I said, they say, "Yeah, you can't just walk past the thing. It's a policy where you just can't walk past the thing." I tell them, "I was looking for my cousin. My phone is there. All right, let's move to this next case where things might get even messier [Music] on September 27, 2023 in Okala, Florida, where a Circle K employee dialed 911 after what might have been the wildest convenience store showdown of the week. The drama. two women, some sneaky beer moves, and one very angry Polar Pop Cup. >> It smells like there's alcohol everywhere. This lady trashed my store. >> She came behind the counter. >> Literally came behind the counter and attacked her. >> Okay. >> It goes on and on throughout the store on our way out. >> All right. Are you injured anywhere, ma'am? >> I don't think so. I have little cuts and scrapes. My glasses are broken. Do you need EMS? >> No. >> No. Have you ever seen this person before? >> I'm pretty sure she's come in before. Yeah. Okay. >> The lady trying to steal. >> It's all on camera. >> Let me ask you question. Quick question. Was she in Was she trying to steal? >> Yes. >> And you confronted her. >> I asked her, "Where are the cans of alcohol that you have?" Cuz I watched her take it out of the door. Did she put them in the four cup that's down here after she threw it at me? Because they smell like alcohol. It's all over the machine. It's all over. She poured them in there. >> Yeah. So when I asked her where the cans were, she got all defensive and then was like, "Say I won't." And then she threw the cup at me. Sorry. She threw the cup at me. >> According to the employee, one of the ladies tried the old hide the beer in the soda cup trick. When confronted, the suspect responded not with an apology, but with flying beverages and flailing fists. >> She came around the corner and >> she hit me. And I kept walking away from her and she kept calling me a scared [ __ ] I'm not scared of you. I just don't want to lose my job. Not to mention, I'm 4 foot 11 and you're like what? 56 foot away from me. I'm tiny. I don't want to be beat up by nobody. >> What were they saying when they were bringing >> The situation escalated fast. The suspect allegedly leaped behind the counter like it was Wrestlemania, started swinging, and had to be physically dragged off by a customer and a friend. The poor cashier just wanted to keep her job and her nose intact. >> There those cups in. >> Um >> cuz I had seen her go over there cuz the doors make a ding-ding when you open them. So when they opened, I looked over there and I could see her and she had two cans in her hand. walked over to the Polar Pop area on this side of the counter. >> So then when she came up with her friend, she had two Polar Pop cups, but no cans. So I already knew I'm not dumb. I've worked for Circle K for 7 years. I know how this works. So I was like, "Where's the cans of alcohol?" And she goes, "Oh, I didn't want them anymore, so I threw them away." And I said, "Well, can you go get them so you can pay for them?" And she goes, "Why don't you go get them?" and was in my face and then picked up the cup and she was like, >> even after being pulled away, the suspect wasn't done. And then she came back up to the counter and then started walking this way like she was going to come back over behind the counter. >> The friend, >> no, the girl that. >> So then I stepped over the [ __ ] on the floor to go that way and she called me a scared [ __ ] Which you're two times my size, lady. I'm not a fighter. Yeah, I'm going to stay the hell away from you. And then she won out. And then I think she came back in one more time and then they left. >> Okay. And then I locked the doors because at that point I wasn't helping nobody and I was done. I did cuss at her, but that was after the fact. But I wasn't aggressive. I wasn't rude. I wasn't mean. I don't know what the hell is wrong with people. Should be considered child abuse and tiny. As officers were finishing up their reports at the scene, a man and woman approached them, asking about a lost key that was reportedly found inside the store. When questioned about their connection to the incident, the woman revealed she was the mother of one of the suspects. She told officers her daughter had >> Then enter mom. But from you just telling me saying that she got into a fight into into the store, I need her side of her story. Okay. >> But like I said, I gave him I provided him my name with the case number so owner of that of that of that key can come to the PD and claim it. >> Okay. The officer kindly suggested, "Maybe your daughter should come down and explain things." Mom agreed, saying she'd rather her daughter go to jail than get into something worse. Parenting level realistic. She said, "Mom, I don't know if I will be going to jail, >> okay, >> or not, but I just I'm just letting you know that I got into a fight with a lady at Circle K." We know what Circle K, okay? >> Cuz she ain't You see the thing? It didn't say. So, so called the police. She called somebody. She called the Okay. Well, I don't have any money, so I don't know what to tell you. >> I got you. Okay. Like I said, if you can call her, text her, whatever. I work till 7. Her best bet is just to call me so I can talk to her in person and go from there. Cuz if not, I'm I'm going put out a warrant for her arrest. >> That's fine with me. >> Okay. >> But it's my thing. I'm just being as mama. For real. For real. Time was ticking. >> Quick, get it over with so she hasn't be looking over her shoulder every time she's out. So I like I said I work till 7. So if she can come to me before 7 before I send out a warrant for her, but she is she is going to be placed on arrest once I see her. So just let her know she is going to jail, right? Moral of the story, don't mix beer, polar pops, and punches at a Circle K. It's not worth the mug shot. >> Whoever wrong for having that stuck in my >> On December 17th, 2023, police were alerted by WCO food staff about potential shoplifterss actively concealing items throughout the store. In a surprising twist, the suspects turned out to be a grandmother and her granddaughter drawing officers into an unexpected and tense encounter. >> This is where Oh, she's wearing black. >> Yes. So, she had a box in her hood in either she just picked it up to conceal in her pants right now, but then she has something else in her bag. >> Grandma now? >> No. Yeah, they've been concealing together. I don't know why they're separating all of a sudden. >> And there's another female, a smaller female for sure. Um, >> so would you You want the items back, obviously. >> Oh, hell yeah. >> Then you want them trespassing. >> Oh, mostly. >> Okay. >> So, I can show you real quick that way. It's House of Beauty cuz >> it's just me right now. >> Okay. But grandma has a ton of stuff in her purse on on top of purse. >> Okay. All right. Cool. I'll try to bring it back over here. >> Officers aren't typically faced with confronting grandmothers and grandchildren committing crimes together. But the law doesn't bend for sentiment. Bound by duty and law. They approached the pair without bias only to quickly realize that despite appearances, these suspects are no different from the average shoplifter. >> Ladies, how you doing today? >> Okay. >> Hey, uh, let's go ahead and bring all this. We're going to go down to the LP office. We're going to go have a little chat. Okay, >> cool. >> We're going to have a chat. Why? >> Yeah. So, right now, um, you're you're most likely concealing items right now that were shoplifted. So, let's just go have a talk down at the LP office so we don't have to make a talk out here. Okay. >> Okay. But I think you're mistaking. >> Okay. Well, if I am, then I am. So, let's go have a talk. >> Okay. >> So, go ahead and just follow me. >> What about all my frozen food? >> Uh, if Hey, if it's a mistake, we'll we'll we'll get some new ones. Okay. Go right. Go right. Go right. Ma'am, stop taking items out of the bag. Kind of a dumb move, right? We're going to go straight to customer service. >> Because this was a family shoplifting case, there's a strong chance financial hardship played a role in their decision. But while desperation may explain the motive, it doesn't excuse the crime. There are numerous resources available: charities, food banks, and community outreach programs that they could have turned to for help. In many similar cases, suspects are often cooperative and show immediate remorse. However, this grandmother stood out not for regret, but for her defiance, making the situation even more troubling. >> Are you grandma? >> Ma'am, what what's your name? Just go ahead and put your hand behind your back for a second. Why? >> Ma'am, put your hands behind your back. >> Why? >> Cuz you're being for. >> No, I'm not. Yes, you are. No, I'm not right now. No, I'm not. Relax. Look first. Relax. Let go of the purse. >> Let go of the purse. >> Stop fighting with us. Do it. >> Male officers are often instinctively cautious when dealing with elderly women trying to balance enforcement with respect. In this case, however, it's the female officer who takes charge and firmly lays down the law. Despite the suspect's age, her behavior mirrors that of a seasoned thief, defensive, confrontational, and lacking remorse. It's a stark contrast to the image most people have of grandmothers making the arrest all the more jarring. >> I thought you were saying some dumb. >> You're saying dumb. >> Listen, you have three officers and you're fighting. You're not going on. You're hurting my arm and you're resisting against us. >> Bring it back. Bring it back now and I'm going to throw you on the ground. >> What an idiot move. >> Go ahead and turn around. >> I have another young one here. I need to know where she's at. A second grandchild is also present in the supermarket, though she doesn't appear to have taken anything. Still, officers suspect she may have been used as a distraction. Her being left alone in the store now becomes a serious concern. Meanwhile, grandma shows little interest in cooperating or resolving the situation quickly, further complicating matters. >> I read you something right now. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can't be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to the presence of an attorney to assist you prior to questioning and to be with you during questioning if you so desire. If you cannot afford an attorney, you have the right to have an attorney appointed for you prior to questioning. Do you understand these rights? >> Do you understand these rights? >> Take doesn't know. >> How old are you? >> Okay. 16. >> How old are you now? >> Okay. >> Back. >> Yeah. >> This is how you set an example for this young lady. Have a seat. Have a seat. Say please. >> I'm not going to say please to you. You disrespected us by trying to resist arrest. >> The detained grandchild is just 16 years old. As a minor, her identity is protected and she may face more lenient consequences under juvenile law. However, her involvement could lead to additional charges for the grandmother specifically contributing to the delinquency of a minor. A serious offense wear and te. >> It's not personal. It's just used to take the understand. >> She took all the >> I did not know that. >> He was right next to you. >> I did not know that though. I was shopping through the store myself trying to get groceries. >> But whoever wrong >> for having that stuff in my purse. >> She just kind of wrapped things up for a second. Okay. >> But I'm just trying like alcohol or anything. >> She was >> I wasn't aware of it. >> She was right behind you. But I wasn't aware of it. I didn't see her. Go ahead and turn just real quick. >> Is there any way we can separate the juvenile here with her back to the camera? >> Yeah, you can separate. Yeah. Okay. >> Just clearly like speak with her cuz it's >> she's grandma's talking. She's talking. >> Yeah, we're okay. We're >> We have a granddaughter. She She has a disability. >> Really get freaked out. You know, officer is with with her right now and she's fine. That first chair is fine. >> Just cuz we have so much talking. >> Shoplifting is already troubling, especially at her age. But using her own granddaughter as an accomplice takes it to an all-time low. Shockingly, her behavior is about to sink even lower. >> Don't know how that got in there. I was going to the store shopping. I have a cart full of food to buy. Okay. >> And they came up to me and said that we had to come in here because there was a possibility of some shoplifting going on. >> I didn't know. I was walking through the store looking at stuff and everything and some points I walked away from my purse. Look at your cameras. >> I don't know how it got in there. >> Okay. And was your purse in that little seat area the whole time or >> It was in the little seat area. Yes. >> Okay. How long would you say that you lost visual of your purse your whole time? >> I don't know. I'm I was looking at stuff trying to see check prices and and and figure out what I was going to get and probably at some points it might have been for a little while but >> Dez was there by my purse so I I don't know. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> I mean technically you just dumb and stuff except for what she was doing. I had no clue she was stealing alcohol. I don't even know what that is. Like I said, I don't drink. >> Okay. >> Did you see her at any point except in her purse? >> I did not. >> The granddaughter remains unaware that her own grandmother has just placed the blame entirely on her. But what's even more shocking is that one of the items in the grandmother's possession could link her to a separate crime. As officers wait for the girl's parents to arrive, the questioning intensifies, revealing a deeper, more unsettling truth behind this family shoplifting case. >> Do you have a middle name? >> The Buzz Ball. >> The Buzz Ball. >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> No, but do you have a middle name or no? >> Jane. >> What is that? Like a alcohol drink? >> Legal first name. >> Yeah. >> Why you stealing alcohol? You're 16. >> Can you spell it for me? A R M I N R. >> It's okay. Relax. >> Do you have anything else on you right now? >> That's from the store. >> After the 16-year-old granddaughter admitted they were both intentionally shoplifting, the grandmother granddaughter duo was transported to the station. Meanwhile, the younger grandchild, who hadn't been detained, waited alone in the store until her parents finally arrived to pick her up. >> Guys called me. You said my daughter was stealing. My mom being arrested because my daughter was her. >> So, she actually was concealing in a purse as well. So, it was it was separate events at the same time, if that makes sense. So, she had stuff in her purse and then there was stuff in another purse. >> There there there is surveillance of her concealing as well. She admitted to concealing. Okay. I sometimes when I personally me, I'm not trying to make excuses for everybody else. Sometimes when I don't have a cart in my hands, I'll put stuff in my own bag, but I'll pay for it when I get to the counter. >> Yeah. You know, she said she said she was shoplifting and um obviously you can extrapulate from that with grandma. Obviously, I can't talk about that, but you can kind of take it from there, your own imagination about it. Um but so what's going to happen tonight is that she's going to be taking uh taken to Durango, which is downtown. >> Mhm. Um hopefully she'll learn a lesson from that. >> Talking about my daughter. >> Yeah. >> Yes. >> So here's the deal though. Even if she was doing what you're saying, which is not too consistent with the norm the average citizen. So >> I'm just saying I have personally done that. >> Right. But when you walk past all points of sale. >> Oh, okay. >> This may have been a miscommunication among officers as the suspects never actually passed the point of sale. When officers spoke with the mother, she appeared completely unaware of the suspect's possible motives for shoplifting. >> Alcohol with her. >> She had a buzz. >> Yeah, that was in her purse. >> I don't know what her intentions were with that. I mean, I'll let you decide that as a mother and how you want to go about discipline if you're going to discipline, but that's all how you want to go about it. But that's what we found. >> Okay. >> But yeah, there's however you want to apparently. >> So, that's all she was taking was alcohol. What else? >> And there was there was some candy. Uh, she said that was for her grandpa. >> But I I Here's the thing. She's with She's with grandma. >> Yeah. >> And obviously it's a loud behavior because again, you can kind of go from there about what was going on with grandma. But I mean that this is this is something that I'm sure you know your mother better than anyone. >> I do. And I don't know why my mom would do that. That's the thing. like she has her social security. She lives with me >> and she doesn't have to pay any of the bills there. >> I mean, she buys food and stuff on her social security to help out, but I mean I may >> at the station both the grandmother and granddaughter were officially charged with shoplifting. Additionally, the grandmother faced an extra charge of resisting arrest due to her uncooperative behavior during the encounter. Even family bonds don't excuse breaking the law. Guiding the young into crime carries serious consequences.
