We usually know how these stories go. Traffic stop, lights come on, and the suspect either pulls over or runs. But what happens when the running starts before the stop even begins? Well, on September 30th, 2022, a trooper spotted a white Jeep Grand Cherokee merging onto I 85 North from Cleveland Avenue at a high rate of speed. The Jeep kept accelerating, weaving through lanes without signaling. The trooper got behind it and clocked the speed at 94 mph in a 55 zone. But before a stop could even be attempted, the driver gunned it, crossing the Gore area and fleeing into the night. We're coming up to the University. We're coming up [Music] to he's going to go back here. As the chase progressed, the suspect showed no signs of slowing down, driving recklessly at high speeds and showing zero regard for anyone else on the road. [Music] We're going to be exiting. [Music] As the suspect began to slow down, the passenger suddenly jumped out of the vehicle. And little did he know that would turn out to be the best decision he has ever made. Get [Music] back. I'm coming. I'm working here. You get enough. Not in the car. Here he is. Here he is. Here he is. Here he is. Here he is. When troopers arrived at the crash scene, the jeep was overturned and engulfed in flames. One trooper grabbed a fire extinguisher and managed to put out the blaze. As the chaos unfolded, two unresponsive males were located nearby. Near the crash site, troopers also found a broken and bloody AR-15 rifle, later turned over as evidence. The two deceased suspects were identified as Brick Dunn and a Marion Clott. The lone survivor, the passenger who jumped out moments before the crash, was identified as Montavius Lovejoy. He was taken to Grady Hospital with a gunshot wound he had sustained prior to the pursuit. On January 1st, 2024, a Manona police officer noticed an SUV make a sudden turn, appearing to avoid contact. The officer followed the vehicle into a parking lot, but instead of stopping, the driver turned around and sped off down Nicholls Road. A pursuit began with speeds climbing over 80 mph. [Music] [Music] [Music] the suspects. reckless driving helped him slip out of the officer's sight, but as they say, you can run, but you can't outrun the radio. With help from radio communication, the officer was able to locate the suspect once [Music] again. [Music] Heat. Heat. [Music] [Music] Dayne County Sheriff's deputies attempted to stop the SUV with a spike strip, but the effort failed. But seconds later, the SUV blew through a stop sign and slammed into a tree. All three occupants, 30-year-olds Rashad Nelson and Aaron Willis and 19-year-old Aaya Ry, were pronounced dead at the scene. None of them were wearing seat belts. Inside the vehicle, officers reportedly found two stolen guns and marijuana. Toxicology reports later revealed that the driver had THC, methamphetamine, and promethazine in their system at the time of the crash. We usually know how police chases start and how they end. But what happens when a suspect decides that nothing, not even common sense or his own safety, matters anymore? Well, on April 20th, 2019 in Milwaukee, that's exactly what happened. A pursuit began and this suspect made it clear he was ready to risk it all. No matter the cost, no matter the danger, he was willing to do whatever it took to escape. here still south traffic. We just hit a vehicle PD only at Chambers. We're going to stop and uh stay there. Okay. 82. We are still continuing as primary southbound on Sherman passing loc passing north. Just caught up in a little bit of traffic here again. And it's going to be a gray Pontiac G6 Wisconsin temp tag Q9310 Lincoln. Coming up to 35. We got a red. Just turn green. Continuing through 35. Approaching 17th Street 17th secondary eastbound on Sandle from Walnut speeds are approximately 50 mph road traffic. The chase quickly spiraled out of control with the suspect driving like a complete maniac blowing through traffic, ignoring signals and putting lives at risk. As the danger escalated, more and more units joined in, trying everything they could to stop this reckless driver before it was too late. Roads are dry. Speeds are approximately 90 mph. Still continuing south on 43. Traffic's light. Roads are dry. Speeds are approximately 90 milesPH. We're going to be going stand by here south on South Fifth Street. We're turning [Music] around east on the ramp right [Music] now. Again, it's going to be a great two door still northbound. We're getting caught in a little bit of traffic here. All [Music] [Applause] right, we're northbound still on I43 Q9310 Lincoln. One unknown number of rocket due to intense reason for the pursuit's going to be reckless driving. This suspect must have played way too much GTA because nothing else explains the level of insane driving we're seeing here. At this point, you have to wonder, is it even worth the risk for officers to keep chasing? 88 secondary north. I'll take over broadcast from here again off the north exit. We're going to be continuing eastbound and then north contin. [Applause] [Music] Passing MLK. East on Garfield. Pass MLK. Okay. Pass center. We will continue north on Palmer coming up to take over. We are passing locust continuing northbound Pontiac G6 two doors. Further suits going to be reckless driving. He's got a Wisconsin take on the way. 19th north on north on 19th. Uh passing thin place. All right, he's got to go east on Lawrence here. We're east on Lawrence from 20th after all the chaos and high-speed chasing over reckless driving. Officers were about to witness exactly what everyone had hoped wouldn't happen. [Music] Grinch 1301. Turkey. There's so much. As the suspect blew through an intersection, he slammed into another vehicle, causing a horrific crash so graphic we had to blur it out. The chaos didn't stop there. The suspect's vehicle then barreled straight into a house. Miraculously, the innocent driver survived the collision, but the suspect who caused it all was pronounced dead at the scene. And if that wasn't enough, the impact nearly set the house on fire. Thankfully, officers acted fast and managed to extinguish the flames before things got even worse. On June 24th, 2024, Arkansas state troopers were in pursuit of a stolen Nissan. The suspect, William Darren Barnett, took off the moment he spotted patrol cars. The chase escalated quickly, prompting a call for backup. That's when we pick up with trooper Tyler's dash cam footage as he joins the pursuit. Westbound. No traffic. I believe Mayor Angbound on Bay 52. The moment Trooper Tyler took over the pursuit, he applied serious pressure, staying tight on the suspect's bumper and looking for the perfect moment to execute a pit. Camera down to 30. Trooper Tyler executed a pit, but things took a turn for the worse. The plan was to push the suspect into a concrete barrier to safely stop the chase. Instead, the suspect's vehicle flew off the bridge and landed upside down on the interstate below. [Music] Can you see anything over there? With me. With me, Tyler. Pull this airbag down on your passenger side. Show me your hand. As troopers approached the wrecked vehicle, they found 51-year-old William Darren Barnett unresponsive. EMS rushed to the scene, but it was too late, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Who do you think is at fault here? And what could have been done differently to prevent this outcome? Porsche Caymans are known for its speed, but not for running from the law. Well, on Sunday, March 3rd, 2022, Trooper Thomas spotted a silver Porsche Cayman flying down Eor's 85 near mile marker 92, weaving between lanes at high speed. As the trooper moved in to conduct a traffic stop, the driver kept pushing the limits, failing to maintain their lane, refusing to pull over and accelerating even more once lights and sirens were activated. The chase was on. He's going to be a 1080 going northbound. Coming up to exit 96. He's an HOV. Exit 96. North Crest Road 96. Still northbound. Clear at this time. Coming up to exit 99. The suspect weaved through traffic at a dangerously high speed and quickly disappeared from the trooper's view. But what trooper Thomas witnessed just moments later left everyone on the road in complete shock. Looks like he's jumping towards exit 99. It's terrible. Looks like a 1050 real bad. 1050. 1050. Go ahead and start 52. It's 51 as well. 1050. They're going to be uh right in the corner. You stupid. Hey, show me your hand. Both of them. Don't move. Somebody over there somebody. Oh, you stupid. Don't you goddamn move. I think I get out. Get out. I don't care if you fall. Get out. Lay down. lay down. The driver appeared lethargic with slurred speech, slow movements, and watery eyes. Then came the real shock. A tow truck driver on scene revealed that a pedestrian had been hit during the crash and thrown over the median wall, landing on Dawson Boulevard. That man was later identified as Hugo Martinez. The driver of the Porsche, Victor Allen Smith, showed clear signs of being under the influence. He refused a state blood test and was arrested on the spot. Troopers found $3,200 in cash on him which was secured in his vehicle before it was towed from the scene. On March 3rd, 2023, a Gwynet County jury found Victor Allen Smith guilty of felony murder and homicide by vehicle in the first degree. He didn't lose his life in that chase, but he was responsible for taking one, and in doing so, he destroyed his own. Smith was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. On November 1st, 2023, Tex Arcana police were already in a high-speed pursuit on I30 eastbound. Trooper Shelton was parked at the 15-mi marker, listening in when suddenly a vehicle with flashers nearly slammed into him. He hit the lights and jumped into the pursuit. [Music] Just grab one of them. Do what you got to do. [Music] [Music] Just wrecked out. Just wrecked out. Just wrecked out. Go ahead and send 1016. Go ahead and send 1016. The suspect lost control and crashed into the trees. As trooper approached, he gave multiple commands for the driver to show his hands. But when he reached the vehicle, it was clear this was bad. The Jeep was mangled and the driver's upper body was slumped over into the passenger seat, showing no signs of life. Then things got worse. A fire had started under the vehicle. The trooper rushed to grab his extinguisher, but it failed. After calling for help, another officer arrived just in time with a working extinguisher and they managed to put the fire out. The driver was later identified as Steve Martin Jr. He died at the scene from the injuries sustained in the crash. Just before 11 p.m. on March 29th, 2025, North Little Rock police requested backup from Arkansas State Police. They were in pursuit of a vehicle flying down the road with its headlights off, hitting speeds over 120 mph. AISP troopers joined the chase near mile marker 145. Blacked out. 13's ahead of me. Just passed the 144. Speed's over 100. 13th primary coming up on the 142. Speed's about 127. Go ahead. The suspect hit 130 mph before taking exit 142 onto Highway 365. But at that speed, it didn't take much. He lost control and crashed straight into the trees. Fearing the worst, troopers rushed toward the wrecked vehicle. I didn't see anybody bail out of this car, but they went down this embankment. Let's move up and clear it together. There's three people in the car. Three people. All right. They're probably pretty messed up. I see an elbow there. Elbow there. What you see in that back window? You're going to have best shot. All right. Looks like the driver and and uh front pass laid on top of each other. Drivers laying across the back seat. I'm going to cut his bags off. Yeah. Hang on. Oh yeah. He's going to be pretty messed up. Sadly, the driver, later identified as John Bruce Martinez, was pronounced dead at the scene. Three 17-year-old passengers were injured in the crash, but were transported to the hospital and are expected to survive.
