Police stop a woman outside Target. She swears she didn't steal yet. Admits she walked out without paying. Officers remind her if you pass the registers and exit with merchandise, that's retail theft. >> Give us your ID now. Or we could wait. Listen to me. Or we could add an obstructing charge to your retail theft charge. >> No, I a buy. >> I don't understand. Like >> exactly. You didn't buy anything. You walked out with it. It's as simple as that. >> I didn't even get outside. Listen, it doesn't matter if you go through that first set or that second set of doors. You left the store. You left the store without paying. Yes, you did. You left the store without paying. >> You already admitted to it. >> So, let's make Now, let's make this Let's make this Exactly. It's on camera. So, let's make this simple. >> Let's Let's get your ID so we can get you identified so you don't you don't get another charge. That way, you're just getting charged for retail theft. >> Let us get your ID. >> That's what I'm going to do. For how long? >> You're going to be fine. Listen, we might have got off the wrong foot. I'm trying to explain to you how this works. So, for retail theft, you walked. >> She argues she would have paid if caught. Officers explain intent doesn't matter under Illinois law. Leaving without paying is theft. >> Pass all the last points of purchase. >> Correct. >> I didn't even come to the store. >> Exactly. You walked past all the cash registers. >> Out with the merchandise. I walked around before, so I didn't technically mark past anything. If y'all >> did you not pass Did you not walk past the registers >> just now? Yes. >> Without paying? >> Yes. Just now? Yes. >> So, that's a retail. >> How? And I don't have anything. >> You got Google on your phone. Type in ILCS. Retail. >> What is it going to say? Attempt to steal. >> No, it you did. You did not plan on paying for the items. Otherwise, >> you did. Then why didn't you go to the registers? >> If I get to pay. Yes. So if you were getting caught, you were going to pay. That was >> I was still going to pay. >> That's good. Yeah. Perfect. >> We need your ID. If you don't provide the ID, you're just adding charges to yourself. >> Taking an item. I'll sign up barcode and do another. >> Oh man. All right. We We need your ID. >> I can show you to you on my phone. >> Asked for ID. She hesitates. Gives different birthdays and officers suspect she's lying. They press her to provide proof. >> How do you know how you feel right here? >> I just got another one. I don't have the paper. >> Do you drive yourself? >> No. >> Who's out there? >> My friend. >> Did your friend know you were going to do this? >> No. >> What's your first name? >> What was that? How do you spell it? What's your last name? Do you have a middle initial? What's your birthday? >> Fingerprint you. If you're giving us a bogus name, you're going to get another >> Do you Do you want to try that again? >> How did you spell it? >> The way you told me to spell. >> That's my name. I don't have Pull up the picture of your ID, though. Where you live now? >> Where at? Around the corner. What's the address? Do me a favor. Smile for me. Let me see those teeth. Come on. >> Smile. >> So, was there a reason why you told me your middle initial was? >> I said, >> "Okay. What's your password? >> 11503. >> You said 03. >> Come on, man. >> You want to play these games? >> I was standing next to you. 03. >> You said 03. >> We were all standing right here. >> It's not that hard. >> I don't have no reason to laugh about my damn birthday. I'm already in there. Okay. Uh, report number right there. >> Perfect. And then whatever. >> Loss prevention breaks it down. She grabbed Target bags, stashed items inside, dumped some when she panicked, then kept concealing before heading for the exit. >> You can get the footage. Actually, I can probably submit a request. >> Yeah, the one drive link. >> Yeah, >> they're still scanning there. The check link. Um, can we do this? I'm not supposed to leave the office. >> I'm not supposed to leave the office. >> Oh, as long as that's you're good. >> Because um it depends on how much you ended up stealing. Could be a felony amount, could not be. All depends. as far as you know. >> That's what I know. >> Yeah, they got it all on camera. >> You want to just talk to get the information? >> Just explain that what you told to me like stuff. >> Oh yeah. >> Uh so we were I was picked her up on the floor. I was walking on the floor. I mix on blue side which is like the GM side. Uh we have >> You were personally walking the store? >> Yeah, I was personally walking the floor. Got it. Um and then she came up to blue selfch checkout. She went out the went in the exit which is closed. It's not open. and she grabbed a handful of the Target plastic bags, put it into the cart, uh went into the candle aisle, was concealing half of it, got spooked, went over to our furniture, went into that aisle, looked up, done checked, and then continued concealing into the bag. Um, and then she made a loop back around grocery side, or GM side, which was right here, and then made the exit. And >> Okay. >> Okay. Um, obviously we'll get her band and everything, too. I'll send you that Axon uh like community request. You're familiar with that, right? Yeah. Okay. All right. Cool. Yeah, that'll be the easiest. >> Staff document everything with photos and confirm she'll be banned from the store. >> Way to just drop all the um the merchandise. Uh is that all of it right there? >> Yeah, that's all of it. I'm going to snap so I have it. I'm going to snap a picture with my phone really quick. >> Are you okay with the priorities? >> How we doing? Just want to get a picture of all this really quick here. >> Perfect. Thank you. >> That's the only number we could use. >> She admits to prior arrests for retail theft and marijuana possession. Officers secure her belongings before transport. How much? >> All righty. >> That solves that. >> Stand up. >> I know it sucks, but it's our protocol. It's our policy. Unfortunately, >> put your phone in your >> You want to give my partner your bag? I'll hold on to it. >> You'll make phone calls at at the PD. We have to go faster. Let me just >> No. Come on. The faster we get there, the easier get through this. Okay. Give my partner your bag. Got long hair, huh? But turn around. Have you been arrested before? >> Mhm. >> For what? Don't even tell me. Retail theft. >> What have you been arrested for? Before marijuana in the car. >> Marijuana. All right. Let's see the other arm behind your back. I'm going to roll up your uh sweatshirt. Okay. >> You got little wrists. So, is that good? >> Okay. You don't have anything on you, correct? Do you have anything in your pockets? So, your jacket, >> my friend. >> Okay. >> These for your car? >> Mhm. >> All right. I'm going to put this in your purse so we don't lose these. You got anything in your purse that we need to know about? >> All right. >> Escorted to the patrol car, she complains about being held tightly. Officers explain it's standard procedure, not personal. >> Made the wrong decision tonight. That's what this is. I'll uh I'll send you that link within the next couple minutes or so. >> Thank you, man. >> Why is y'all holding me like I'm a runner? >> Huh? >> We have to. >> I got to just what we got to do. Go ahead. I have to period awaits. Put your seat belt on. All right. You want some water when we get to the PD? Huh? >> She's officially charged with felony retail theft. Stealing, even with the excuse of planning to pay if caught, is still theft in the eyes of the law. Dishonesty only adds more charges, and choosing honesty prevents deeper trouble. But this is still not the worst case. Just wait until you see this next one. >> Okay. >> Well, we have your old shoes in the asset protection office. So, you're detainer now. Okay. Anybody under arrest? >> You're just a right now. >> Police are called after loss prevention reports. A woman swapped her dirty shoes for a brand new pair. She also stuffed her shirt, pants, and jewelry into her purse, leaving her old sneakers behind in the aisle. [Applause] >> Yes. Yes, sir. Sorry, ma'am. I've been watching this now here. So, um the shoes she has on. >> Those are her dirty shoes and those are our shoes. And then she concealed in her bag. I think a a shirt and I'm not sure. He still has the pants on them, but I think she has jewelry as well, but I didn't see her. I But what I did see was that those shoes are ours. >> We got two more coming. Let's listen to them, please. >> So, I know you guys are busy. Do you want to just approach on the floor? want to let them I don't know how long they're going to be shopping. >> I'll I'll when they one just got here. So when she pulls >> I'll see what she wants. >> Hi. >> Hello. Sorry. >> No, it's okay. So those are our shoes. Those are her dirty shoes. >> Okay. >> And then uh she put some stuff in her purse that is ours as well. I don't know what you guys want to do. I know you guys are busy. So do you want to approach on the floor and just >> uh No. We're going to need to have her actually try to exit because at this point she could try to say like while still going to pay for so she would have to bypass all the points still. >> Okay. Okay. No worries. >> We can try to see where she's at. She's in the back right now. >> Yeah. Hopefully they're almost done. James are going to lose if she passes. >> Security and officers wait until she passes the checkout to lock in the shoplifting charge since suspects often claim they plan to pay. >> You still purchase at customer service? like the other concealed stuff or like when we can't I could get flips saying, "Well, he was still going to pay for it." >> Yeah, you're right. You're right. Yeah. Yeah. You know, I just didn't know cuz sometimes um when PD shows up, they're like, "Oh, we're really busy, so we're just going to go approach on the floor, get stuff back, and blah blah." >> But yeah, so I just never know, you know. Which one is that? >> I mean, we can hang for a little. >> But I mean, >> so hopefully hopefully they'll be on their way out. I'm not sure. And it's just her so far. >> It's It's her. He's with her. But >> he >> And then someone >> You don't have anything for sure on him, though? >> Uh, no. She's the one that's concealing everything. >> Where is she? >> Where is she? >> Oh, there she is. >> You guys know who she is? >> No, I don't. >> I think I've seen that hair. >> I mean, I if any have her on the shoes. Those are her shoes. So, We're just trying to see if she's going to have to try to do it like a sho. >> Where are her old shoes at? Right here. >> Where'd she leave them? >> She left them at the shoe in the shoe aisle. She like put them behind other shoes. >> Okay. >> So, I said, "Well, if anything, I know she has stuff in that purse that belong to us, but I but that in fact, like if I have anything and those are ours, so I have her on her shoes." No worries. I don't know. They had pants in a shirt and I think they're in there, but he keeps grabbing stuff. So, I don't know. And then they keep >> going into corners. Okay. >> So, maybe they'll maybe they'll go pay now. Who knows? Hopefully. So, we can just be done with this. >> Mhm. >> Did they Where did they go? >> Did I go to the right or >> Oh, they're there. Okay. So, that looks like they're about to pay. >> Okay. >> And they're coming >> hopefully. And they are going to be towards GM's side. So maybe that's >> her male companion pays for his items, but she skips checkout completely. Still wearing the stolen shoes. She ditches her purse, but keeps the shoes >> cuz she got into a corner where I couldn't see. I have someone on the floor, but but no one saw her for sure. Put them back or put them in her. >> No. So see how full it is. Yes. >> But no, no, but the the shoes for sure. But we we >> Okay. >> Hopefully we can get maybe something. >> So he's going to go pay and she's going to walk out. Okay. Hey, Juan, can you go over to GM, please? 16. So, it looks like the guy's paying. So, if anything, it would just be the female, but she kind of stepped away from him real quick. >> So, if anything, just checking out good to go. >> Uh, we're about to make an approach right now. There's an officer out there, a GM, because I think they're going to walk out. So, but the gentleman's paying, but she has stuff. She has her shoes. Some of these cameras aren't working. >> Just stay right there. one on 32 and it's a female with the yellow. But I have the police. >> Yeah, male's checking out right now. >> If you want to wait for her like in the vestibule just so that way it's like undisputed. >> Where is she? Where'd she go? >> Officers stop her outside confirming she abandoned the old pair in the store. >> Okay. Yeah, she don't ditch. Hold on. Yeah, she d No, she she's ditching her purse. They're going to walk out. Hold on. >> She ditched her purse and seasonal. Can you please go get it? >> Yeah, she's out of shoes. They're heading towards the exit right now. >> She still has >> She's just a female. >> How's it going, buddy? >> Are you even looking at the pictures when I came in? >> No. No. We have your old shoes. We got your old shoes on your back. Okay. >> I'm wearing the same shoes I'm wearing. Okay. >> Well, we have your old shoes in the asset protection office. So, you're just detained right now. Okay. >> Under arrest. >> You're just detained right now. >> She refuses to cooperate, saying she won't go anywhere without her husband. Officers show her clear video evidence of the shoe swap. >> You're insane. >> My camera's on. >> I don't care. >> Okay. >> Well, there's a female in there. >> The the camera was on when you guys eat on that guy's neck, too. But >> I didn't eat on anyone's neck. Nobody else is using this. >> Who? Who's that? >> That's why he's in jail. >> Who's there? >> Valenuela. >> We didn't hang on his neck. >> 11:16 Central. I got a 41 detainine. >> She's in the asset protection office. We got to go. >> My husband's home with me. >> She can wait outside the office. Ma'am, come on. You said you have somewhere to be. Let's make this quick. >> All right. Can I just take the shoes off? >> Are you past all points of purchase or you're going to get charged for shoplifting? >> I'm not past all points of purchase. Go right there. See? Okay, >> you can let me squeeze me any harder. >> You want to take it cuz she's threatening to >> I don't want to I don't want a male putting their hands on me, please. >> Okay. One second. >> All righty, ma'am. Let them have a seat on the bench. Right. >> All right, ma'am. So, they have you on camera swapping out your shoes. Okay. Can I see putting items in your purse? Okay. Um I I didn't leave with that. >> Okay. No, I understand. We're not worried about that. >> I was using it as a shopping bag. >> Okay. Okay. >> Right now is just >> That's fine. Can I have my tickets? >> Okay. We're going to get done when we're done. Okay. You don't run this. >> All right. Well, then are you going to pick up my daughter? >> After being mirandized, she's formally arrested. She argues it was only a $10 item, but the evidence is undeniable. >> I'm not answer any of my questions or make any statements. You understand? >> Am I arrest? >> Very. >> I thought I was detaining. No, you are detained. But we have video. Now you're >> Yeah, now you're arrested because we do have you on video footage. Swapping your shoes and trying to walk out of the store. >> It's a $10 ticket. Like it's a $10. >> Okay. Well, actually, I can't take you to jail. Okay. >> So, you want to talk about what happened? >> I just need your shoes. >> Okay. What's your name? >> My daughter by shoes. >> Don't drop my daughter then. >> That's not what I'm saying. She told me to stand by. Maybe she'll give you better. >> Police uncover multiple outstanding warrants tied to her name and social security number. Shoplifting, disorderly conduct, resisting and evading charges stretching back to 2018. >> Child two at least. >> Okay. >> Shoplifting, disorderly conduct, and resisting obstruction. >> Resist obstruction. >> Well, you have three. So warrant. >> Wait, what are you talking about? >> I'm direct confirmed. So you're going to jail today? Actually, >> I have warrants for what? >> I said shoplifting, >> disorderly conduct, resisting, arresting, or evading an officer. >> So whatever incident you had prior, you didn't show up to court. It sounds like >> they could just be simple FTAs. >> I've never had a Okay. >> Well, it comes back to your social security number. So >> it comes back to my my name and social security number. >> Yeah, I ran you by >> I ran you by your social case. Okay. Regardless, you're going to take it in court. Sort that out with them. We're not going to hear during the discernment. It's in your name. It's to your social. It's for you. >> Am I going to have a bite? >> That's We'll find out right now. >> You sure you don't want to take your >> Yeah, those are cool. >> Mhm. >> What's your husband's name? >> Joseph. >> Okay. >> Have a warrant. >> She's trespassed from all Walmart stores. Entering again means instant arrest. Rickava Snow Match Wall in every Walmart in Las Cru is okay. >> So it just says that if you come back to the Walmart, if you're even in the parking lot, they take a picture of you, anything like that, we either arrest you on the spot or we put a warrant out for your arrest. >> Do you understand? >> Do you have any questions? >> Any songs you want to listen to, Charlene? >> No. All right. >> So I can close my body. >> All right. It's good to go. And then, you know, I'm not I'm not booking you in jail on the shoplifting. That'll still just be a citation. Just go take care of it. All that jazz. Yeah. >> You know, don't let it get to this point. >> Well, see, I think [Music] part $30. >> It be like that sometimes. So, handle your scandal. >> All right. Yeah, it's going to be failure to appear for resisting trucking evading, failure to appear for disorderly, and same thing for shoplifting. So, >> yeah, that's all it says. It doesn't really give much other than that. I'm not Let's see here. Looks like 200 for one, 100 for another, and this one has no bond. All right. >> Along with a fresh shoplifting citation she's booked on her old warrants. Bail ranges from $100 to $200 with one case holding no bond. Trying to outsmart store security only makes things worse. Every move is being watched. Small thefts can spiral into bigger problems when past warrants and court failures catch up. If you like this video, please sign up for Law Zone to receive more. Look out for the next shoplifter who will react even more aggressively. >> Put your stuff down. Why? >> Put your Put your drink in there. Why? >> Take this off. >> Why? What are you going to do? >> I'm going to arrest you for shoplifting. >> I'm not. >> Do not resist. >> Do you want an extra charge of resisting? >> On August 2nd, 2023, officers were dispatched to a Target store regarding a suspected shoplifter named Robin. After making contact, they obtained her details and explained the allegations that she had attempted to leave the store with unpaid merchandise. >> Attention that you purchased um food, but you had other items that you were leaving with. >> I wasn't leaving. I hadn't locked out the store yet >> cuz you saw us. >> No, on camera. That's what it looks like. >> Well, that's not what happened. >> Okay. It doesn't look like the Red Bull is on here either. >> Mhm. I scanned the Red Bull. Do you have your receipt? >> I know. I scanned the Red Bull. That was the first thing I scanned. >> Okay. >> He had a different another receipt, too, that had printed. I guess it printed out two different times. >> Can I see your receipt? Officers reviewed Robin's receipts and explained that since she had already passed all points of sale, it appeared she was trying to leave without paying, though she claimed she was just headed to the bathroom. Surveillance footage suggested otherwise. >> I mean, >> I know that was I was going to come over. >> You go what you customer service? >> Why would you go customer service? That means >> because I need something. >> You need return. This doesn't make any sense. Usually when you do returns, you do it in your first year. >> No, not if I had to go figure out what I wanted. >> That's usually how it works. >> What are you returning it? >> That's how I always did it. >> What's your What are you returning? >> Well, I already had it with the um the filter. >> So, you already returned it? >> Well, I gave it to them to hold on to. >> So, if I go ask them, they're going to confirm that. >> I don't know. It's a different lady now. >> It's pretty convenient. Robin asked if she could take a few things home to her kids, but officers told her to wait while they ran her information. That's when they spotted a backpack in her cart stuffed with merchandise. >> Backpack in here. >> Don't Don't pick your stuff out of the cart. >> Just wait. >> I told you you're not going anywhere until we confirm your information. So, you might as well just put it down. Is this your backpack in the cart? Who says it? >> Target backpack. >> Did you pay for it? >> You did? >> No. >> So, what were you going to do with all of that stuff? >> Put it down. >> Yeah, cuz why would you put it inside the backpack? >> Too full. >> People usually don't shop like that. >> I can't have room in my car if you saw me. Not a normal way of shopping. >> If you saw before, I didn't have room in my cart. >> There's there's plenty of room. >> Yeah. >> We understand that we shop, too. We know how to fill a cart. We know how to do this. So, the things that you're telling us, we know how to return items. >> None of that makes sense for a reasonable person. >> I guess I I guess so because loading a backpack up of stuff that you're going to walk out with. You saw us looking at you over here as Vasper Adventure is talking to us. So, you decided to walk this way because maybe you can just get by us. Like, maybe we wouldn't notice. >> Maybe by chance we weren't talking about it stupid to do that. >> Of course, you saw. >> Robin insisted she was on her way to customer service when the cops stopped her quickly spinning a string of fresh excuses about why she went the way she did. But, as expected, her story fell apart fast, coming across as flimsy and unbelievable. You you weren't going to use EBT for the Starbucks drink or you just said this Starbucks. >> I know what it's like. I didn't use >> So, what were you going to do with that stuff? >> Put it here. Ask them to hold on to it for me. I'm waiting for my sister to get here. >> When is your sister supposed to get her? >> The officers weren't buying Robin's excuses for a second. Between the surveillance footage and her suspicious behavior, it was obvious she had no intention of paying for the backpack or the items stuffed inside it. >> Put your stuff down. Why? Put your Put your drink in there. >> Why? Take this off. >> Why? What are you doing? >> I'm going to arrest you for shopping. >> I'm not shopping. >> Do not resist. Don't resist. >> Do you want an extra charge of resisting? Then you can continue. >> You guys making things. >> Do not resist it. >> Do not resist. >> That's an extra charge. There's four of us. >> Set these up just a little bit. >> Why? I wasn't shopping. >> Why are you trying to keep us from your purse? >> Come on. Stop. Stop. Stop. I didn't cuss. Hey. Huh? Yeah. >> It's on It's on the >> Stop, man. >> Oh, you guys are >> We're not here to hurt you. >> Let me go. I wasn't shoplifting. I didn't walk out of the store with it. Despite her continued resistance, the officers quickly gained control of the situation. With Robin restrained and seated upright, they proceeded to take her into custody without further incident. >> Okay. Well, you can you can talk about that in court. Okay. >> Time to take these cuffs off. >> Ow. >> Good. Ready? One. You're going to get up on three. Okay. Take the front of the unit. [ __ ] You think it's going to focus stab us? >> Yeah. >> With the woman secured, officers spoke to a store employee who confirmed what he had witnessed. He added that this wasn't Robin's first time being caught shoplifting at the store. >> Did she get to? >> She made it all the way. You guys were locking up right here. Uh-huh. >> I'm surprised you guys didn't see him. She was right here already out the door. So that's this is where I stopped here. I was like, "Let me see your seat. Let me see your seat." And then you guys came around the corner and she's like, "Nope, I paid for it." And I was there's coffee right there. I'm not going to play this game with you. So >> And then that's when did she walk like around this way? >> Well, she went right back. She's like, "Let me show you. Let me show you. I didn't print out a receipt. I paid for it all." I was like, "No, you didn't. Let's go get a receipt then real quick so we can make sure went back." And that's why she's like, "Don't do this. Don't do this." Then she's a repeat offender. I'm a manager with Thompson's right here. Both of them I've been at and I've stopped her before doing the same damn thing. She'll pay with her food stamps or the food items and push out $500 in other items. So, repeat offender. I already knew she wasn't recognized as soon as I walked out here. So, she could insist on her innocence, but with both video evidence and witness statements against her, the outcome was clear. Robin was officially charged with shoplifting and resisting arrest. Stealing and making flimsy excuses only adds to the trouble. Once evidence stacks up, denial won't erase the charges. What an unyielding shoplifter. The next shoplifter will react much more violently, so keep an eye out. >> I want to do your job. I ain't got [ __ ] to lose. I'm talking about this cracker here. >> On March 16th, 2023, Brook Haven police responded to a shoplifting report at a public supermarket in Brook Haven, Georgia. The suspect is identified as Ryan Donald Bilips, a repeat shoplifter with a history of erratic behavior. >> Three day mom came up from me and she put me right over there at the student state. She paid $4,000 each day for 30 days. And then when I left, you know what I'm saying? She I take care of my I got to go to class and stuff like that for the you know being out here and stuff like that. But they stole my own ticket. I >> have my ID and they have card >> because see they normally don't have they normally for the property when serville right the property lady downstairs cuz I got arrested over there at the at the restaurant and then they put me in they put me in 14 days. BIP rambles incoherently to officers about past arrests, stolen ID, and unrelated personal issues while trying to justify his presence in the store. >> Then when I first got arrested over here, I was got arrested over the at the buff. >> Okay. >> Yeah, I got a buffer. I got arrested at the buffalo, but I had a DUI from four years ago. So, I had to clear that up like that cuz I wasn't trying to do that. So mom gave me gesture to the boo. She gave me she paid 30 days for my stay for that. But I still but I still have my property over there at at your at >> you got to make an appointment to come in and pick it up. >> That's where I was going. You know what I'm saying? Cuz I stay right there the puppet stay right back there. So So I was working my way over there. But when I stopped at Cookville and I purchased these items and then I put my jacket because it was hot. I put my jacket there and my jacket got stolen. I had my put my jacket. It's like a little zip pocket. I have my ID, my EVT card. I have all my identification there. >> Let me get you >> and it got stolen. So when I came in here, I'm thinking >> Okay. >> So when I come in here, I'm like I'm bones to where I don't have my ABT card in there. So I'm be I didn't have it in my apartment and I didn't I didn't run up >> same last name first >> just struggled my camera I was like let me go cuz I didn't feel right >> yeah it was all the way over on at the high street 911 hang up >> oh there was nothing Yeah. It wasn't >> on May 31st, 2023, police responded to a subway after reports of an employee stealing from the register instead of earning extra money through. >> Please don't send me to jail. >> You can get rid of >> I'm not saying nothing. Give me give me a few minutes. >> Yes. >> We have evidence for 3 years. Three years. >> Three years? No. Are you out of your mind? >> So, >> right now you are going to get arrested. Okay. I need to speak to you because this has been going on for a while. Completely up to you if you want to speak to me or not. >> Okay. But I I >> Hold on. Let me finish. If you do want to speak to me and you have an explanation for whatever it is that you may have done, I'm going to read you your rights and we'll go from there. Just to get kind of like a baseline if you this is kind of like your chance and you get to explain yourself before you. >> You might be surprised, but plenty of thieves try to justify their crimes by claiming they have kids. Sure, many people have children, but that doesn't make it okay to steal $20,000 from your employer. >> And piles and piles and piles of evidence with detailed note and corporate is this is me right now. Corporate is coming after me for you. >> That's all I have to say. >> That's not send me to jail for my daughter. >> I have >> You've been told before nobody else. >> I Excuse me. I told you you had a past record. I worked my I worked hard for six years to drag you out of that. You had all whatever drugs felonies you have. You did not listen. I gave you my store keys. I trusted you. And guess what? You robbed me for over and over and over. I have >> He's You've been recorded now. >> Enough. >> Step out. Step out. Although the manager had warned her several times, the suspect continued stealing. While the officers understood the manager's frustration, they asked him to step out so they could conduct the interview without his interference. >> 5-year-old dog, six, sevenyear-old daughter, >> okay, >> that needs to be picked up. And I have nobody else. >> Okay. >> Regardless of what happened, I don't know how. >> Okay. So >> can we resolve this away without taking you to jail? >> Unfortunately, it is not up to me. >> It's up to him. >> Okay. >> Yep. So there is a lot that we need to talk about. >> All right. And I cannot force you to talk to me. We can have a conversation, maybe get a better understanding why this happened if you want to, but I have to read you right. >> Okay. >> I have never like intentionally done anything wrong to hurt you. >> Mr. Vansa, I need you to step out, please. We cannot do this back and forth thing. If you're going to keep doing this, then I cannot do an interview. >> It's often the most innocent who suffer the most from crime. In this case, the woman's daughter had to witness the trauma of her mother's arrest. Hopefully, the officers can find a relative to care for the girl. >> So, what exactly? >> I feel like he treats us very unfairly. >> Okay. >> What is >> all of us? >> What is unfairly to you? >> I like there was one girl's been working here 6 years. She still makes minimum wage. Like he like he doesn't give us any appreciation. and I've been here a long time and I I know I don't mean the sound come off, you know, like as excuses and anything, >> but he's a hard man to work for, >> right? >> And I've never I never like intentionally meant to like I never like in my mind like stole anything. >> Okay. >> I just feel like we're all treated so unfairly. I mean, >> so what >> I mean, >> what do you think happened when you're pocketing money >> or when you're taking money from the register or when you're not bringing stuff up and then later on adjust? >> I understand it. It wasn't a lot. >> It's ironic that she claimed she didn't want to make excuses while she was in the middle of making one. Even if her claims about the manager were true, there was still no valid reason to steal from the store. She also insisted she didn't feel like she was stealing and that she didn't take a lot. But if 20 gone,000 isn't a lot to her, then what is? >> What was the initial amount that you were taking that you can recall? >> A couple dollars. >> A couple dollars is what? Like $2? >> Yeah, like $5. It started with $5. >> Yeah. I mean, >> was it every day back then in January? >> No. >> No. >> When did it become every day? I think I went to Syria every day. I mean, it was a dollar here, two or or here here and there, you know, and I stick it in a tip jar. >> Were we only talking about a dollar a month? Like $1,2? >> I didn't take like 20s and big amounts. I didn't. >> Nobody mentioned 20s, but you did take 20s. >> No, I would go and get change a lot. >> Okay. All right. >> I'm not going to argue with you. I'm trying. >> I understand >> for you to tell me a little bit to help me out. Help yourself out. >> I know. I'm trying. But I didn't like steal a lot. Like at the time it was little amount. >> She still doesn't seem to understand that it's about the total accumulated value of everything she stole. She'd been at it for quite some time. So even taking just $10 per shift could easily add up to thousands of dollars overall. >> In total, >> not a lot. >> Not a lot. Fair enough. >> Now, whenever there's a cash transaction, I'm just looking at the patterns here. It seems to me like whenever there is a cash transaction, you don't ring up the cash transactions, you either ring it up, you cancel it, you don't ring it up, you leave, you put the money in, provide change, you split that amount into the tip jar, you take some cash, or a combination of both. or later on you come back and take cash. >> So, it's a lot. It's been every day for the past at least for the past month. >> It's only It hasn't been that much. Not that it makes a difference, but it I mean I don't take a lot every time. Okay. >> And I I know that doesn't make a difference. >> So, a day >> over time it >> How much do you take a day? $10. >> $10. >> Yeah. Yeah. For you for eight years. And this has just started recently. And I apologize from the bottom of my heart. My daughter I have I can't do this to my daughter. Please Tina. Can't we handle this a different way besides sending me to jail? >> You do what you have to do. I I cannot be interrupted. For I get in trouble. If I get into your Vietnam, >> would you would you allow me to not go to jail and we can handle it with some other meino? I've done so much too for you. I've been loyal to you and I apologize. >> Loyal to you? How >> you forg stop and go or I'm going to have to you take it off. >> She doesn't seem to grasp that it's about the total value of everything she stole. She's been at this for a while, so even taking just $10 each shift can easily add up to thousands of dollars over time. >> $750. >> $750? I don't think so. >> You don't think so? >> I guess I have. I I guess I I don't think I think some of the times if you see me taking 20s, it was exchanging money. >> Okay. So, >> I don't I didn't think >> the exchange the exchange does happen. The problem is you're not putting in what you're taking off. So that's not an exchange. >> No. What? >> How is that an exchange? You have you have a friend? >> What? >> Do you have a friend? >> No. >> You have I mean he says it's 19,000. >> There's no way. There's no way. There's absolutely. >> So that's why I asked you. You give me an estimate how much you think you've stolen. >> Not nowhere near that. >> Then how much? >> A few couple hundred over 6 months. I would take like $20 a day. >> $20 a day >> or so. Yeah. I mean, I know that's not correct and that's not the right thing to do, but I did not steal $19,000. >> After first claiming she stole $10 a day, she suddenly changed the figure to $20, only confirming her dishonesty. >> So, I'm just going to patch you down. Is there anything on your person I should know about? No guns, violence, weapons of mass destruction, al-Qaeda hiding in your pocket, anything. You know, cut me, gross me out, stick me. I have to go home. >> But I want to go home. >> Sorry. >> No. All right. I'm just going to patch you down. >> It turned out she was stealing about $12 a day, which added up to over $21,000 in just 6 months. She was, of course, charged with grand theft. Despite the overwhelming evidence, including 100 hours of video footage, she chose to take her case to trial. Even small thefts add up over time. What seems minor in the moment can lead to serious consequences.
