I didn't [ __ ] do anything wrong. Stop. >> Hey. Hey. >> Why do I have to stay in jail for something like this? I can't hurt someone. I mean, this is crazy. I've never been in trouble in my entire life. Why do I have to spend the night in jail? Shoplifting might seem like a small crime, but some people managed to turn it into a full-blown disaster by refusing to cooperate, trying to run and denying any responsibility. Today, we're diving into some of the worst shoplifters ever caught on body cam to see if they finally learned their lesson. >> Get your ass on the ground. >> Get your ass on the [ __ ] >> Get your ass. Don't [ __ ] move. Police in New Jersey respond to a shoplifting in progress at Marshalls on February 24th, 2024. The suspect exits the store as officers arrive. >> Nah, bro. Come back here right now. >> Come back here right now. >> He's running down the alley. The suspect runs toward a gas station, but is quickly tackled and handcuffed after a brief chase and struggle >> towards the gas station through the back. Get your ass on the ground now. Get your ass on the ground. Get your ass on the [ __ ] [ __ ] Get your ass Don't [ __ ] move. Don't you [ __ ] move. Put your hands behind your back now. Put your hands behind your back. >> I got you. >> Put your back. Move your hands. He's in custody. I'm at I'm at the gas station. I go. That's all right. >> Sit up. Don't >> [ __ ] move. >> The suspect, identified as Maurice, repeatedly apologizes, admits regret, and says he should have dropped the stolen items instead of running. >> The hell, Maurice? >> I know, man. >> Come on. I'm sorry. from a [ __ ] dick, man. [ __ ] man. Don't understand this [ __ ] man. >> [ __ ] >> Why? Why did you go this way? You could have just dropped the stuff. >> I was and came and talk. >> I thought you was going I thought you still going to come get me, [ __ ] >> Damn. I I was going to drop that [ __ ] too. [ __ ] >> Call crew, baby. I hope for it. Uh, no worries here. I'm next to snipe on the grass on holding >> in between the gas station. >> [ __ ] dick, man. I'm a [ __ ] dick. Damn, man. I'm going [ __ ] up, man. If I dropped the star, I was going >> You was going to chase me if I just dropped the star. >> Stand up. >> Stand up. >> All right. He's not searched yet. >> I got stills in my pock. I'll let you do that. >> You're not going to see my car, but I'm going to search you. All right. >> How you doing, Maurice? >> Not good. >> Not good. What's What's wrong besides being under arrest? >> You all right? Otherwise shaking all this [ __ ] What's wrong? >> Jesus Christ. Christ. You got anything? [Music] >> Officers search him. Maurice continues to express remorse, calling himself stupid and a mess. You just going to walk over here and see if it's over, man. I hate my [ __ ] My bad off them up. >> That was you. >> These are [ __ ] Just the one front. >> [ __ ] do this [ __ ] Why, man? Why my life, man? Why, man? >> I don't got nothing else on me, dude. >> No, I'm sweaty. You got on [Music] the shirt. Officers conduct a thorough pat down, checking his clothes, pockets, and hat for stolen items or contraband. >> What? >> [ __ ] [ __ ] What's that? >> I don't know. >> What do you mean you don't know? What is that? >> Take it. I'm not sure this one right here. [Music] [ __ ] >> Oh man. [Music] Okay. Something in the water. It's right up here. >> Huh? Got a hole here. >> The bottom. Is that what you're feeling? >> Yeah. I check the bottom one. The top one. >> Check. >> What's that? >> I said ain't no walk to your car. >> The suspect is placed in a patrol car, appears sick, and officers lower the window for him. Walk over to that car. All right. Yeah. Can you grab the back? You done? >> You need to go to the hospital. >> Not yet. >> You going to be sick in the back of the car? >> Oh, no. I'm already >> got to put the seat belt on. >> Just bring it towards me. Hold on. and my partner going through the other side. >> Hold on. Hold on. >> Please. >> What? You think you're going to be sick? Mark, >> you need some gloves? Once? >> Yeah. All right. I'll lower the window for you. All right. >> Nice. >> Oh, he did. He got They uh Brower caught him right here. I guess they ran out the back. Came down this way. Brow caught him right here. Cuz when we pulled up, he had him double handcuffed already. Officers recap the chase. One officer caught and tackled Maurice near the gas station after he ditched the stolen merchandise. I think he was trying. He He was on the radio, but he wasn't comfortable either. But there he is right here. That's coming. I didn't have I didn't have dispatch make another call for service cuz I keyed up. Did you hear me when I was like >> I have him in custody. He was sitting right there cuz I tackled him right here. >> Nothing came through. >> I got out at the gas station. I can't see 199. >> Nothing was coming through at all. So I >> I'm like looking around. We're like, "All right, we'll look around. We'll try to check him out. I know you use your gun towards D." So >> yeah. So I tackled him. I caught him like right here and I tackled him and uh he dropped the [ __ ] as I tackled him. I put him in cuffs and then I was just sitting there. I keyed up. I was like, "Oh, we're alongside Olden Avenue in between snipes or whatever." Nothing. >> The [ __ ] >> I just tried again as I walked out of Marshalls cuz I just >> I know. I heard 232 and I I >> What do you hear? Answer. >> You heard you say you're out here, but you ask for the update. >> Yeah, I said go for 232. I heard 232. >> Yeah, I do. >> Twilight. >> We'll meet you in there. >> He uh I pulled up right out front. I hopped out the car and as soon as they said he was walking out with the green bag, he walked >> video too. >> He walked out. No, I >> What's that? >> He got out. I was like, "Yo, Maurice, knock it off." He like dipped behind the pillar and then >> The officer notes the suspect tried to hide behind a pillar before fleeing. They chased him down the alley. What did you say though? >> Transporting one adult male arriving this location headquarters. Starting mileage 11360. >> Maurice is transported to headquarters. He faces charges of shoplifting, obstruction, resisting arrest, and contempt. Stealing twice in the same day only makes the crime worse and harder to deny. Anger and racist outbursts won't change the facts. Actions have consequences, but this is still not the worst case. Just wait until you see this next one. >> I'm not under arrest. >> You're under arrest. >> For what? For what? >> Relax. >> Let go of me. Hey. No. >> On May 6th of 2023, officers in Kent, Washington, confronted Kayla and her companion after store security identified them as repeat shoplifterss. When ordered to leave, Kayla grew combative, tossing property, cursing at officers, and refusing to comply. >> Hi guys, how we doing? >> Hey, need you guys to leave the store without taking anything. >> Okay, you guys are identified as previous shoplifterss. Yeah, store security said they called us here. They said you walked in with another guy just now and they literally pointed you out. Both of you. >> I didn't give me. >> Yeah, both of you. You guys are trespassing the store for life and you you need to leave. >> You don't give it away, bro. >> What? >> Those stolen jeans. >> The jeans with the stolen tags on them. And then so you guys need to leave the store. Okay. If you don't leave now, you're going to get arrested for trespass. You guys understand? You can't come back. >> Cool. They don't want your business. They don't want your money. >> The the store security. >> Security. >> That's really stored identifies two repeat shoplifters, Kayla and her partner. Police tell them they're trespassed for life and must leave. >> Simple. >> Are you serious? >> Absolutely. They don't want your business. You got to take those gloves off. You got to leave. >> I'm not a weirdo. I'm just doing my job. You got to leave. >> You are a weirdo. >> Okay. Well, I'm sure if I took your dirty fingerprints outside and got your fingerprints, you'd have a serious a long history of >> Excuse me. You want to do that? Let's go check out. Check it out. Come on. You want No, seriously. I don't >> No, I want you grab my purse. You can take the purse. Go ahead. You got to leave. >> I want you to take my fingerprint. Thank you. Take your Seriously, I prove you wrong. We would have to go all the way out to my car out front. >> Cool. >> Yeah, >> that's really really rude. >> I don't care. You're really really rude. Tell me I have a long >> Go ahead. It would be a really fun end to my day. >> I just don't think you should be slinging around terms like that cuz it's rude. >> Why would you? >> You got to leave the store. I'm going to arrest you for trespassing. >> Keep going. Keep going. You got to clear the store and clear the entire parking lot. >> Oh boy. That's actually called disorderly conduct. Stop where you are. You're under arrest. Stop. If you start to run, I've already told you you're under arrest. If you start to run, I'm going to chase you. >> I didn't [ __ ] do anything wrong. Are you >> swing at me? If you swing at me, >> y'all, I didn't do nothing wrong. I swear to God, you guys are I'm not under arrest. >> You're under arrest. >> For what? For what? >> Go with me. >> Kayla argues, insults officers, and refuses to comply. She throws property and is warned she's committing disorderly conduct. Officers place her under arrest. >> Hey, listen. Listen. Plenty of opportunity out of pocket right now. I swear to God. For what? I didn't [ __ ] do anything wrong. >> Let go. You're going to get >> Are you serious? For what? What did I do? Tell me what the I did. Tell me what the I did. >> It's called conduct. >> For what? >> For throwing their property on the ground. >> Are you [ __ ] serious? Absolutely. >> You guys are so out of pocket. I said you're going to pay me my money. I have money. Cash money. Okay. >> Okay. You were told to leave the store >> and I did >> seven, eight times. >> No, I threw it. Literally talking about me. >> Let go. >> Let go of the purse. It's okay. >> You're not arresting me. >> Yes, we are. >> Let go. You're not. >> Stop. >> Stop. >> Hey. Hey. >> You guys are so >> I got mine. >> Why? Alex, >> can you keep an eye out for any other guys? She went in the store with two guys. >> Alex, get a camera cuz I'm videaping this [ __ ] >> We are videotaping. >> Good. No, you're [ __ ] up. Stop. >> I'm ling. Can you stop? >> Hey, your arm can get broken. I don't want to break your arm. >> No, clearly you do. >> You're resisting. >> Stop. >> Roll over on your stomach. >> For what? >> Did you say Yeah. You know? Okay. Now you're under arrest for another charge for resisting arrest. >> Why are you guys doing this? I didn't do anything. >> Do you want to get tased? That's the next step. >> I didn't do anything. >> That's the next step. I swear to God, you >> have issues. Look, you're such a [ __ ] >> Hey, let go of my hand. >> You did. You just squeeze my hand again. >> No, I didn't. Why? >> Hey, stop. >> You guys are so I don't understand what the wrong stand up. Stop you. >> Why are you freaking out? >> Because I've been arrested for once. >> We told you like 30 times. >> I didn't do anything. [ __ ] Can you stop? Get the [ __ ] off of me. >> Stop thrashing. >> Get the [ __ ] off of my leg. You [ __ ] piece of [ __ ] What the [ __ ] is wrong with you? I [ __ ] hate you. >> Not the first. Not the last. >> You guys [ __ ] stop. >> Okay, so you're under arrest. >> For what? Why did you do anything wrong? I hate you. Get the [ __ ] off me. Seriously hurt my [ __ ] leg. >> You just started kicking at my >> I did not try and kick him. >> I saw him. Do not stand. Do not stand up. >> I never will. >> Taylor resists arrest, screams she's innocent, kicks, and curses at officers. She's warned she may be tased if she doesn't comply. >> We have cash money. I was going to buy some [ __ ] >> We're audio video recording. >> Good. Good for you. >> Just letting you know. >> You want to see my money for >> Well, it's not about money. If you walked out without paying for stuff, >> I didn't walk out without paying stuff. They told me you guys had this door. >> That's what they told us. >> No. What? No, that's a different thing. >> Yeah, they identified them as previous shoplifters. We went and trespassed her. Not me. >> Told her to leave a bunch of times in >> the store with him. >> She finally left. As she left, she grabbed a stack of buckets and tossed them backwards at me. >> I swear to God, I didn't think he was talking to me. >> You didn't think who was talking to you? >> You guys. I thought >> when we were in the store. Yeah, I was talking to you. We we we said many times. >> Like you said, you guys. >> We'll go back to the footage. We have both of you. You guys are trespassing the store for life and you need to leave. >> Okay. What are you doing? >> Going for yourself. You're an arrest. Search your >> body. Go through my >> It's called incident arrest. Kayla, >> no. Do not stand up. We're ready for you to stand up. I'll tell you. >> Are you injured at all? >> Yes, I am. >> But what hurt? >> My [ __ ] What do you need on my [ __ ] back? My [ __ ] chair is hell back. It's hard to breathe. >> So, we're also going to have a sergeant come up here and talk to you. >> That's fine. That's perfectly fine. >> You want to stand up? I can sit you down in the bumper now. >> How is this legal at all? >> No seat. Actually, you know what? Do you have anything on your in your pockets? Anything on you that's going to hurt me, poke me, stick me. Needles, knives, explosives, guns, anything like that. >> No. >> Let's walk over here to this back of the car. >> So, I didn't do anything wrong. Seriously, you guys are so [ __ ] up. >> Stop raising your bag. >> You don't have to push your pocket back in. It's the lowest of the priorities right now. >> How is this even legal? How is this even leg? >> New drug laws in Kent. >> Not even kidding. I just put this on. >> New drug law. Just signed into effect. >> I literally just put this code on. I swear to God. Not even kidding. I swear to God all my kids life. Why? Why am I getting arrested right now? >> You're under arrest. You're under arrest for disorderly conduct. >> And you're under arrest for resisting arrest. >> Because you I didn't do anything wrong. I understand. There's no reason I should be arrested right now. Literally no [ __ ] reason. >> Officers find drug paraphernalia on Kayla. Complication. A new Kent ordinance banning drug possession went into effect just days earlier, turning her possession into a bigger issue. person right now is so out of [ __ ] seriously there's nothing I didn't do anything wrong I want his life I swear I'm honestly I don't do blues at all I swear to God I know what they are but I don't do them I swear to my kids >> you know the street name for him >> yes I do I know I know they are ghetto >> see my hand to sweep the side of your bra you don't have anything in there okay widen your stance for me see my hand. >> Step in there. >> Don't [ __ ] be right. This is almost why I'm getting arrested. >> Put your foot in. We already explained it to you when we were trying to find. >> I didn't do anything wrong at all. This is so wrong. >> What type of warrants does she have? >> Um, theft stuff. DWLS stuff. >> That stuff. I'm blown away. >> I'm not taking her without anywhere without my >> Yeah. >> So, >> okay. Where is your body? Did you just rip? >> Yeah, >> bro. I am downwind and that hit hard. Wow, that's hot. >> Dick came out hot. I will sight and release my guy even though he's kind of being a [ __ ] I'll grab her and transport her down, but we need sex to come see her. >> And fire of back pain. Correct. Let me look at her warrants real quick. >> Okay. You have the right to remain silent. Do you understand each of the rights I've explained to you? in my >> Do you need me to read the rights again? >> No. >> No. Okay. Do you understand the rights I've explained to you? >> No. Answer. Okay. What's that? >> Yeah. >> You do? Okay. Having your rights in mind, do you want to talk to me now? >> No. >> No. Okay. >> Yeah. Yeah. One question. Why would you really get to be taken to jail? I I've been to jail one time in my life. >> Okay. Your warrants would say otherwise. >> My warrants? You're lying. I don't know freaking warrants. >> Unless you gave us a bad name. If you give us a bad >> What? I swear to God, my kids give us a fake name. No Kyl, >> you have you have warrants for theft. >> No, I don't. For what? What are you talking about? I went to court. I want it deferred. >> Okay, here's what I'm going to do. I am going to go >> one time. >> I am going to go to my car. I'm going to get my fingerprint scanned. >> If if you ended up giving us a false name, >> that's my name. >> Okay. If you gave us a false name, then you're going to get extra charges for >> Okay, that's my real name and I don't have no warrant out. >> You do have warrants. That's what we just pulled up on our computer. >> How? But I paid I paid 260 >> something from Federal A and [ __ ] something from Auburn. >> No way. >> Well, can you tell me I have no knowledge of the >> Kayla denies drug use but knows street names of Pills Blues. Officers discover she has multiple warrants including theft and trespass. She insists she's been jailed only once, but records prove otherwise through that and we'll go through that in just a minute. Okay. >> As she's walking out, she throws behind her. So like, All right. Well, we're going to take another now. >> Yeah. I said like three times after that like that's disorderly of conduct. You're under arrest. Stop moving. Don't run. Stop moving. Don't run. And I was like, hey, if you start running, >> it's going to be more. And then as soon as we put hands on her, she super hard resisting. And then at one point we go to put her on the ground and she does she tucks her head and does a full flip. >> Hey. Hey. >> Kick me in the back of the shoulder. I'm not >> I don't know if that was just a front foot thing or not. >> Okay. Are you injured? >> No. She had a small thing of blues on her as well and she said they're not mine. of mine the KCC that they signed going to come and give us the legal update for it because I'll just give the sort of way. >> I think that I think that it either will go into effect in July or they'll do it early depending on what the state does cuz the state might come back and say the city can't do that. Miss, what's your first name? >> Kayla. >> Kayla. Okay. Hey, real quick. My my body cam's on so be not even video recorded. My partner said so you're in custody right now. Okay. and I would be willing to chat with you, but because you're in custody, I got to read you your rights and then you have to be willing to chat with me. And that's completely up to you. But if you want to talk, I have to do that. Is that something you want me to do? >> Okay, sounds good. >> All right, Kayla, you have the right to you have the right to remain silent. You understand the rights that I've read to you, Kayla? What What What do you want to talk to me about? >> I swear to God, I was buying everything. I really didn't think they were talking to me cuz I've never I've never stolen from here or anything. There's no reason. You know what I mean? So, I really didn't think he was talking to me. I was shocked. I was like, you're talking to me? Like, I there's no reason I should be kicked out here. Of course. Yeah, I'm mad. And so I all I did was knock I just knocked down the bucket of bucket, which I shouldn't have done. I should control my anger, but I just knocked down the buckets. And then they literally tackled me and like freaking put his knee in my back like hella hard, flit me upside down for no reason. Like serious y'all because I put some I didn't touch nobody. Didn't hurt nobody. Didn't do anything. Two buckets fell like two small tiny little five gall buckets. >> Oh boy. >> I shouldn't have done that. But literally they should not have done that. Like I there's nothing wrong with this. I have warrants. Can you tell me why what I have warrants for? Cuz I I'm literally I've been in jail one time ever. >> I can I can look at it, but I I don't know. I haven't looked at anything. I'm just here to kind of get the the quick version of what happened. So, I appreciate you telling me that. >> And he's so disrespectful. Literally, he said cuz my fingers were dirty. I probably have a a long record of like crimes or whatever. Like I one time. >> Okay. Well, I'm sorry to hear that. We get called here or we get asked by employees to come tell people that they need to leave. some of the people that you were with were previously trespassed. I don't know if you have been previously trespassed. It sounds like you're saying no, but as soon as the business tells us they want this group of people gone, it is completely their right to ask us to do that. >> Yeah, I totally understand. But like I said, I literally didn't see you talking to me. >> And then at the point where you do realize he's talking to you, you get flustered, right? Cuz it's embarrassing. I get that. The problem with throwing the buckets on the ground out of anger, I get it, is that it's disorderly conduct. And at that point, they do have a legal reason to arrest you. As soon as officers tell you, hey, you're under arrest, even if you think it's [ __ ] instead of arguing or resisting their attempts to put your hands behind your back to put you in handcuffs, you got to just be compliant. And then you can argue argue it after the fact. If you think it's BS, that's f that's fair. That's your right. But if you resist when we're trying to put you in handcuffs, it makes it dangerous for you. It makes it dangerous for us. And unfortunately, that's how it played out. Unfortunately, what happens when people resist, we have to kind of begin to do more than just simply try to get your arms behind your back. So that's why they >> Taylor tries to justify throwing buckets in anger, claiming she didn't think police were talking to her. Officers explained disorderly conduct and resisting charges stem from her actions. >> Put you on the ground to handcuff you. Okay. In terms of the warrants, I'll I'll go figure out what the warrants are for and I'd be willing to tell you what those are. I just don't know yet. Okay. >> I'll let you know what the warrants are for. Okay. >> Okay. >> All right. >> The warrant out of Auburn is for crim trespass >> for deferred. >> You deferred it? >> Yeah. maybe missed a court date or missed something. I don't know. >> They told me I literally paid because I paid half of it and for 40 hours community service, I just paid it off like uh $56, something like that. Okay. >> And then the other half she said I'm not even going to make another court date and it was gone. So why >> for whatever reason it's in there and it's your name, it's your middle name, it's your birthday, right? And the name you gave me is uh there was one out of Fedway, but I don't think it was you. It was a different middle name unless you gave the officers in Fedway a different name. And I'm just I don't need to confirm that right now because the Auburn one's fine and we have disorderly conduct from today, right? So, but here's the thing. When you go to Auburn next, just check in at the court and be like, "Hey, I got ar when you when you go to jail today, maybe they'll just help you figure it out and put you in contact with the right people." Okay. >> I get arrested, though. >> Uh yes, you are in tight for just a minute. We should all just go home for the day. I'm emotionally damaged now. >> Kayla. >> Yeah. >> These little things that are like pokés and tools and stuff, they cannot go to the jail with you. So, they're just going to get destroyed. >> Um, why? >> What's that? >> Can't I just give them to my husband? >> Where is he? Pretty much what I want to do is give all your stuff to your husband, but I don't know where he's at. >> Warrants confirmed one for trespass Orbin, possibly another from Federal Way. Officers advise her to resolve them in court. She remains upset, claiming unfair treatment. >> Was he the short Hispanic guy or the taller white guy in the gray sweatshirt? >> Neither. >> No, neither. He's in my sticks right there. >> That one right there. >> Yeah. >> What's his name? >> Alex. >> What is it? Sorry. >> Alex. >> Alex. Can you hop out for a second? We're switching purs. >> Hey, Caleb. Do you want your purse to go with him? >> Um, yeah, sure. Yeah. When an officer tried to politely hand Kayla's husband her belongings, surprise, he had his own party favors sitting right in his lap. Drug paraphernalia. >> Apparently, it's our suspect's car and her husband has passed out inside and is not waking up. You guys have some drug paraphernalia on his lap. He woke up. We're good. Can I open the door, talk to you? >> Are you Alex? >> Yeah. >> Your wife got arrested. Yeah. >> Yeah. These things happen. Um, >> she wanted us to give you her purse and her cash. >> What's she doing in there? >> Uh, she was identified by their store security as somebody who had shoplifted previously and they wanted her trespass. There's a bullet right here on the door. Just any guns in the car? >> No, sir. Okay. >> Anyway, she got uh she's under arrest for obstruction and disorderly conduct cuz she was throwing stuff around the store and she got mad. We told her she had to leave and was trespassing all that. So, you going to jail? Yeah. >> Probably shouldn't be driving though. Maybe find somebody else to come drive for you. >> Yeah. I don't know if you smoked or something recently, but I was trying to wake you up for I literally was just waiting for her forever. I took a nap. >> Oh, yeah. Okay. Any questions? Contact Kent City Jail and they'll find out how much how long. Okay. >> Kayla is initially booked for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, but quickly released later. Charges were upgraded to tampering with property and resisting arrest. Respect store bans and police orders. Arguing or resisting only makes things worse. Bad choices plus a bad attitude can quickly turn small trouble into serious charges. This shoplifter is already a mess. Do you agree with this opinion? Tell it in the comment section. 22 officers responded to a Walmart after reports of a woman stealing. They arrived just in time to see her leaving the store with unpaid merchandise stuffed in her cart. ID >> Oh, I'll pay for it. But I wasn't. >> You got your ID on you? >> Mhm. It's connected. >> Just let me see your ID. We'll we'll figure it out [Music] here. Let me get >> Just come to the loss prevention office and we'll figure it out. your ID. >> Oh, I'm good. >> You ever been in trouble before? >> Mm- >> You never been in trouble? This won't be a big deal. But they were watching you and they said that you didn't pay for a lot of the stuff. So, let's go in here and see what's going on and >> we'll figure it out. Just >> I'm sorry. >> No, that's fine. I'll tell you what. Since your kids in there, we'll let you push the buggy over there. Okay. >> They can push it. >> Well, you can push it. Your kids in it. >> Push it. >> Your kids in it. >> But I can pay for whatever. >> We'll figure it out. >> 3369 Central. >> Sorry, guys. Like I said, disconnected for real. I'm out. Central, can you send a zone unit up here? Central, go ahead and run her criminal history, too. Thank you. [Music] >> This little loss prevention room right here. >> I thought there was one outside. >> No, this is just their little office. So you can just you can go in here and sit on this bench with your kid and let here let's keep all this out here for now till we'll be off. >> Yeah, you can just take him in there and y'all can sit there for a minute while they figure out what what they say you did and didn't pay for. We'll see. >> I have a lot of stuff. >> Yeah, it's going to take a minute. >> You spent that much? >> This is $400 and something dollars. >> Yeah, >> clothes are expensive for kids. Yeah, they do you have a pen? I was feeding her. >> I'm trying. A lot of the stuff I gave her back said I didn't want. So, um, last Thursday, um, I identified, uh, a regular cash transaction that didn't, um, sync up to our normal payroll. Um, and when I dug into it, and it turned out that there was a extra special payroll that went through to our payroll clerk, um, done by herself for $5,000. Um when I looked into it a little bit more um I found there were about um what do we say eight other transactions that what she had been doing over the previous >> information over here is a pay dates what was taken. So she paid herself a total of 17,000 more than what she should have. Um and then this is our fringe and tax liability portion of that. So, it cost us 1,500 bucks on top of that. So, we're looking at 195 in total. And then she has some um company owned assets at home. The total was 990 of monitors and type of stuff. >> So, she works from home. >> Um occasionally. >> Occasionally she would. >> She currently there or currently here? >> Uh she has been terminated. >> Yeah. Okay. So, she's aware this is going on. >> Correct. Well, she's aware she's been terminated. >> She's aware. She's aware that we know. >> I don't think she knows. We're going to get you guys involved. >> The employee manipulated payroll by abusing sick leave PTO and vacation time to fraudulently increase her salary. She tried to cover her tracks, but the company noticed irregularities and began collecting evidence. >> Hi, Heather. >> It's officer Sam police. You know what's going on today? >> I I have some idea. I didn't like this. Okay. What do you think's going on? >> It was from payroll, so not really. >> So, I'm going to read you your rights and I'll give you the option to talk to you. You're not talking to me, making statements if you don't want to, then we'll send you on your way. If not, we'll discuss what's going on. Okay. >> The employer told police the suspect refused to cooperate. They had scheduled a meeting to fire her retrieve company property and discuss restitution, but she never showed. With evidence gathered, they contacted local authorities, who later arrested her without incident. What's >> going on? I don't know what I'm charged with. I don't know what they're saying I did. >> Well, what do you think? I'll tell you exactly what I have, but tell me in your mind what you think's going on. >> I paid myself out hours, my vacation hours >> last year. I just And then there I did a a payroll delivery first and that's then then they figured everything out. And so I was supposed to meet with them yesterday at 3:30 and I didn't because I was trying to hold a job and I I guess I don't know if they were going to pick me up yesterday. They didn't say that they were doing any >> Well, they called me today. I worked yesterday. They did not call me yesterday. They called me today everything that's going on. So right now what we have is going to be 10 charges. All right. Um one is tampering with records. >> How did I Okay. >> Because through the payroll computer software it's an official document. register for taxes and stuff like that. So, this should be that's just how it's written up. All right, that's going to be the highest level charge. This is a felony three. >> Judging by her demeanor, the suspect didn't seem to take the situation seriously at first, but once the officer read her Miranda rights and the reality set in, she began acting clueless. >> There were nine payroll charges done over since um October 6th or something, right? Um, and any what I think division of four or five, I can't remember which one's which, but anything over $1,000 is a felony felony five. Anything under $1,000 was um minor misdemeanor one or misdemeanor one. All right. So, I think I know there's split four and five. Can't remember which way is which. Um I know they're all real close to a thousand except for the last one which is pretty big. Um other than that, so they called me today, find out what's going on and talking within. This is what they uh chose to do. Um so that's why I work here. So kind of fall out of the house and here we are. >> Okay. >> If this woman thought she could walk away with nearly $20,000 in stolen funds, she was dead wrong. Skipping an official termination meeting under the excuse of job hunting didn't help her case either, especially not after committing a serious financial crime. As the officer continued reading off her charges, it became clear her problems were only just beginning. today. >> Well, is this going to happen today? >> You'll be to what's going to happen today is once we're done, um, this officer here is going to drive to the county. You'll be booked into the county. All right? And then next day or two, today's Wednesday. Next day or two, you'll be in front of the judge. All right. >> I'm staying in jail for the next two days. >> The next day or two. So, you could be arraigned in the morning. >> I'm staying a night in jail. >> Tonight? Yes, you will. >> They told me when they picked me up that I wasn't. Oh, >> that's just what's going to happen. That's not their call. That's not balls. >> Yeah. >> Okay. So, you're going to >> Oh my god. Oh my gosh. Please. Oh my god. Oh my god. I'm going to be Oh my god. >> The officer informed the suspect that she was being taken to the county jail for processing. It wasn't until that moment when the likelihood of spending the night behind bars sank in that the weight of her actions finally hit her. >> You know, they're also concerned about the the women you have at home. >> I have a monitor. I'm making it happen. I was coming there. >> Hold on. You're not being charged with that. Just let you know something that they're concerned with eventually. All right. So, I even put in the report there that's something concerned with, but is being considered being stolen or that because you had permissions to use it from home. Okay. Just keep in mind, don't break it. Don't destroy it. Don't complicate complicate things when you have it. I would hold on. >> I was Now I know I'm saying you have like an office full of things of your own too there. >> Yes. >> So what I told them same thing to tell you is when you're ready when you have the opportunity to gather their belongings, have somebody record you as you gather their belongings, right? So that way you show it's not broken or damaged or destroyed. And then you can call one of us and we can do we can help facil fulfill property exchange there. That way they can't say you broke anything, damn thing, and vice versa. >> It's shocking how clueless some people can be about the law. What kind of world was she living in if she believed that stealing $19,000 would only result in a slap on the wrist? Whether she felt guilty for what she did or just bitter about getting caught doesn't really matter. What matters is that justice is on its way and there's no dodging it now. >> Why do I have to stay in jail for something like this? I didn't hurt so much. I mean, this is crazy. I've never been in trouble in my entire life. Why do I have to spend the night in jail for this? I will I will come back. I promise. >> I know. But this is like crazy. >> I'm sorry. You feel that way? >> Oh my I think I've never done any anything. I don't Oh my god. >> All right, Heather, unless we have anything further and we'll get you going. Okay. >> Watch your knees. >> The suspect faced four misdemeanor theft charges. Five felony counts of grand theft and one charge of tampering with records. White collar crimes carry serious consequences even if no violence is involved. Tampering with records and theft can lead to multiple felony charges.
