I'm going guarantee you all my life. I have a receipt for that. the whole shopping cart. >> I have a receipt for what I rocked up and paid for. I know I had $321 of food stuff. >> Y'all seen me come out the store. >> We seen you come in, grab the shopping cart, go to the laundry detergent section, go put the laundry pods in there, and you go to drink aisle and put Red Bulls in there. >> Yes. So I was coming to do it like >> you do understand fully what's going on. Correct. What he explained to you, the tall guy, the ball guy that told you what he knows for the past however many times he's seen you doing this same shenanigans, right? So you can just kind of stop with the card payment and the accepting and not accepting. So just stop. >> Just stop. >> I have not even spoken to you once. >> No, I'm just saying. >> Yeah, I have no idea. I can't I'm not in charge right now. >> But I'm sure if you didn't do anything >> I No, I didn't know I didn't do anything. >> Yeah. Yeah. Well, knowing you did something and doing something are two different things. >> Exactly. That's what I'm saying. >> It doesn't mean you can't be in trouble. >> I understand that, too. That's why I'm trying to figure out what's happening. Well, I don't know what you may have done, but you didn't know you may have done. However, if you didn't do anything wrong, surely those hand tests will come off and you'll be on your way. However, I am not in charge and I'm not investigating anything. So, I really have no clue. >> The gentleman that's uh back there doing the paperwork. He is a little busy right this second, but I'm sure as soon as he figures out who's going to jail and who's not, you will be released. >> Okay. >> Why would I be released? >> Oh, we just answered this question. I gota All right, you're good to go. >> Come on. I did not want to come here. >> Why is everyone crying? >> One woman claims, "But I wasn't driving." Unfortunately, sitting in the driver's seat with the keys is still called drivingish in police language. >> I moved that damn car. >> Okay, you're still sitting in the drive seat. Guess what? I didn't drive the car, though. I didn't move it. >> You're in actual possession of the vehicle. I mean, you got the key in the ignition. The car is on. >> Oh, wow. I didn't move it. You just said camera solves everything. So, you turn those freaking cameras back. I still didn't do nothing wrong. >> You didn't do that. >> I got you. >> My license is suspended, bro. Why would I drive? >> I I literally I literally got you out of the driver's seat. >> That doesn't make me a driver. >> That make Okay, so the kid was sitting in the driver's seat, right? the kid and the car in there sitting in the driveway and the kids driving. >> They have the ability to drive the car away. >> No, none of that ability but not driving. >> But you have the ability to drive away. >> That's not what you said. You said I was driving. >> Yeah. I'm just >> No, no, no. I know. >> Conversion. >> What are you doing? >> I'm standing up cuz I'm tired of sitting on this ground. I'm not taking me to jail anyway. Add another chart. Another charge. >> All right. Yes, sir. >> I don't care. We go. >> That's a real big pet peeve about. Like I said, six years of my juvenile life cuz my stupid code wanted to do something. >> I stated everything and I still had to go. Sit down. >> I told you before. I know you said you're upset and you get worked up, but when you act like this, it's unnecessary. Bad things can happen. The female in the t-shirt would like to speak with you. Let me just bring her over here. I have this on. >> That works. Yeah. >> Sir, I got her. I got her. >> I have done a lot of things, but I did my time in 2017. Okay. And I stopped stealing after that because I had something to live for, which is my daughter. She's 10 now. I'm in the midst of trying to get my daughter back. When I come, that's he's really all I got right now. So, but I specifically told them. >> The drama peaks. One woman tearfully says she's trying to get her daughter back and totally didn't want to go to Target. She blames it all on a mysterious man at 7-Eleven who offered her $100. Sounds legit. >> My daughter, he was willing to give me $100. But before y'all can even try to allow me to go back there, we had to come here. I specifically said I don't want to go there. Like, why do we have to go? I don't want I just Listen, ma'am. I I'm 34 years old. I can't keep living like this, bro. I get that you're trying to better yourself and be there for your daughter. Okay, I get that and I know it's hard. But just because you think you're hands off doesn't mean that you can't go to jail. >> So that's that's how everybody is in this position. So you knowing what he's doing in return, I'm sure he's helping you try and get ahead, right? But >> he do, don't get me wrong, pay >> I'm going to ask you questions, but I want to read you your rights first because that's the way we have to do things legitimately. Okay. Yes, that's fine. >> You have the right to remain silent and not answer any questions. Do you understand that? >> Yes. >> Any statement you make must be freely and voluntarily given. Do you understand that? >> Yes, I do. >> And any statement can be used against in the court of law. Do you understand that? >> Yes. >> Can you let me explain something to you? Okay. >> You know the difference between right from wrong. Correct. >> When someone is legally doing something where they pay for it and when they're not paying for it because they're eluding the actual cash registers. Correct. In the world's worst confession, she admits the earlier theft wasn't exactly a misunderstanding and even IDs herself and her partners in the footage. Loyalty level low. >> Listen. >> Yes, >> he had some extra stuff. >> Uh-huh. >> That's what it was. He did have some extra stuff. No, what I did >> this is this is >> that wasn't legitimate at all. Of course, you know that and you can see that clear as day that it wasn't legitimate. Yeah, >> I don't have to lie. That wasn't legitimate. >> This is you from last week Friday, correct? >> This is me. Yes. I I >> And that's Chiron, obviously. And then is the other male the the kid that was just here? >> That was last week, Friday. >> Yeah. >> When your when your friends do something silly and you're there >> and tonight you loaded up the car with them, >> clearly you have an addiction issue. Okay. You need help. You want to do the right thing. You got to get away from people like uh them >> collectively as a whole. >> All right. >> Are you done with her? >> Yes. >> Okay. >> So, I do have to go to jail. >> Yes, you do. Unfortunately, today >> because this has been a big problem that I've been having to deal with for the last week. We knew you all were coming back up here tonight. There's a whole there's a whole reason to take me to the 71. >> That was yesterday that I saw y'all at 71. >> No, I begged him today. saying yesterday money, sir. You can't give me a chance. >> Not today. I'm sorry. >> There's nothing I can do to give a chance. >> Not today. I can't. Unfortunately, >> to spare me no type of chance. >> Not today. >> I'm going to take this off. Okay. >> Damn. I haven't been in jail in a long time. So, how many charges am I going to be charged with? >> Today, you're getting aggravated retail theft. Why? Because all four of you worked in concert together. >> I swear I didn't do that wrong. >> I feel like a child. You feel like a child. Let me get my shoe. Let me get my You carry me. Damn it. You carry me. You carry me. You carry me here. You guys take me home. >> Are you done? No. >> Kick me again. Kick me again and you're going to get another charge. Get your leg off me. >> Kick me again. >> I need to kick you. >> Knock it off. >> I'm done. >> I didn't kick you. So don't don't make it seem like >> you literally just wrapped your leg around me. >> Then I'm sorry. >> I acted like a damn truck. >> Yes. Because I don't want to go. >> Too bad. I didn't do nothing. >> Too bad. Too bad. It's done. It's past that. >> But why? Nobody even asked me a question. Nobody even said anything. Please run your cameras. I didn't do nothing. Can you give me another charge or something? Tell me. >> If you don't calm down, >> you could have just got another charge for wrapping your leg around my leg. >> I'm sorry. >> So, stop with the bull. >> I want to do what I did. >> Well, now you just freaking assaulted an officer. That's what you just did. So, good job. >> Let me check. I can step. I can sit. I'm going be obedient. Good. Good. Did we Did we >> Okay. Okay. [Music] >> All four are charged with aggravated retail theft because teamwork makes the scheme work. Even when you think no one's watching the cameras are and so are the consequences. Crime might feel small at the moment, but it can unravel your whole future. >> All right. On June 6, 2024, Lacy police officers responded to a shoplifting in progress call. Target surveillance footage shows a 33-year-old woman attempting to leave the store with nearly $250 in Lego sets. A loss prevention agent stopped her as she exited the store, and she abandoned the merchandise and left the scene. Heat. Heat. [Music] [Music] [Music] Heat. Heat. [Music] [Music] Heat. Heat. [Music] An officer stops a woman who perfectly matches the suspect white blonde and rocking neon green shorts loud enough to be seen from space. She claims she wasn't at Target. She was at McDonald's, obviously a much less suspicious place to not steal Legos. Were you just at Target? >> No. >> No. Why don't you step over to my car? Okay. Where are you coming from? >> We were over at McDonald's. >> Yeah. McDonald's. >> Yeah. >> Okay. You match the description of someone we're looking for. >> You sure you signed it? >> Yeah. Okay. >> Hello. He's saying it wasn't her. >> It wasn't you that was doing the Okay. >> I wasn't at Target. >> You weren't at Target at all. 11. Do you have a lot of riches though, huh? >> Seem a little bit out of breath. >> Well, yeah, you guys like I'm a little like freaked out right now. >> Yeah, if you could have them respond to me. >> Cops let her know the store's loss prevention team is on their way to ID her. She keeps denying it like a pro, but her eyes swear it wasn't me. Vibes aren't winning any Oscars. >> Described a white female, green neon shorts, blonde hair. So loss loss prevention I know you g they gave it back. So loss prevention is going to come over here and see if it's you or not. So if it was you be this would be the time to explain to this officer the truth. >> Okay. >> Okay. Cuz based on your demeanor, I believe it's you. >> I'm a little freaked out. >> Okay. Do you think loss prevention is going to identify you? >> No. >> No, >> I don't. >> Okay. Classic former 915. >> Do you have their phone number by chance? Snap a photo. >> I don't know if you're one of the one of the guys that have them on speed dial or not. Uh, I don't. >> After being read her, Miranda writes, she admits she has a warrant, but says it was all a big shoe related misunderstanding at Famous Footwear. Sure, let's blame the sneakers. >> All right. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can be used against you in a court of law. You have the right at this time to talk to a lawyer and have them present with you or being questioned. If you cannot afford to hire a lawyer, won't be appointed to represent you before question if you wish. You can decide at any time to exercise these rights and not answer any questions or make any statements. Do you understand each of these rights? I have to explain to you and having these rights in mind. Do you wish to talk to us now? Okay. So, you were in Target though, right? So, don't tell me you said you weren't in Target at all. >> You know, they have video cameras and everything else too, right? >> 11. You know you're going to warrant us in trilia for theft. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. Okay. >> That was like a misunderstanding. I went into Famous Footwear with a pair of boots that I had purchased and I called and asked if I could exchange them cuz I hadn't worn them yet and they said no. And so I made a mistake and took them in there and swapped them out for a different size. And they couldn't even I had to show them which ones I swapped out because they were brand new. I mean, I know I was wrong and I shouldn't have went about it that way. >> This famous footwear over here. >> No, it was just >> When the topic shifts to her alleged Lego heist, she acts like she's never heard of Target or Lagos or possibly Earth. >> This is regarding Target. You want to talk about that one? >> You don't want to talk about the target thing right now? >> What target thing? >> Well, just with the Legos. I just want to know what you do with them and stuff. >> I don't know what you're talking about. >> Well, what this is what waiting for them to show up where >> they identify you and then we'll have to deal with that appropriately. >> My crew arrest. You're detained. >> We're not We're being not putting you in radio 54 is off. >> Do you live around here? >> I live in West Olympia. Okay. >> All right. Just place your hands behind your back for me. All right. Well, unfortunately they have video and the person who's their lost provision disposed >> plot twist store security confirms it's 100% her. Guess the neon shorts weren't exactly a stealth choice. She's placed under arrest. >> You tell me when I stopped you at the exit. >> What? >> Sam 11 log one for 43. You have CSO copy. >> Oh, do I have to contact? >> So, what ended up happening? How come you want to tell me about it? >> You don't want to talk about it? Okay. about it. Can I not go to jail so we can see your search? >> Yeah, I'll take care of >> I'll walk you over. >> Can I talk to you guys about it? Can I not go to jail? >> Nope. >> I can't guarantee anything like that. That's all up to the stores. This lets you know you are being audio video recorded. All right. You have anything that's going to stick me or poke me or anything like that? >> Officers explain she's officially banned from that Target. If she comes back and tries another stunt, we're talking burglary charges. So maybe stick to Walmart. I'm trying here for a second and you are going to be trespassed from this location. Okay. From the target. If you ever come back here, if you try to commit another crime, it's going to be a burglary charge. All right. >> What is it going to be now? >> It's a theft three. All right. store staff spilled the bricks she boosted $250 worth of Legos expertly hidden in a reusable bag and camouflaged under her shirt. Smooth move until you walk out past every single register. >> The bag like a like a reusable bag. Put them in there. >> Reusable. Oh, did she steal the bag, too? No, the bag she had with her. Okay. And she used the shirt she has on now to cover the bag and then bypass I walked in front of her and stopped her. >> Got you. Outside. >> Yeah. Like right in between right before the last four. >> Okay. And pass all the points of purchase. >> Yep. >> Am I good at the grabber? >> Hello. I'm seeky. How you doing? Oh, I've been better. >> I should stop asking that. >> All right, come on. We're going to go to my car over here. Like sweat on my Got it. >> No. Will you wipe my like mouth? Sorry. Thank you. >> You're good. All right. Let's have your face here. Wide your stance. I'm going to search it. Anything um sharp in your pockets? >> No. I have a bag in my >> Okay. I'll grab that. >> And I have to ask, is there anything hidden in your bra? >> Huh? >> Is there anything hidden in your bra? >> No. >> Okay. Pocket. Check your back pockets. I'm just going to double check your cuffs and I'll get you in there. Are these too tight for you? >> Okay. >> She was transported to the Nisquy Corrections Center and booked on one count of theft 3R degree. Lying to the police only delays the inevitable when surveillance and witnesses are involved. If you're caught shoplifting, the truth will come out along with the security footage. >> I'm really sorry. I'm ready to pay for this. That's >> It's May 1's, 2025. Cops get a call from Target because some lady's been hanging out in the store for hours, basically treating it like her personal shopping spree, except she forgot one tiny detail paying. She tries to stroll out with thousands of dollars in stuff like it's no big deal. What happens next? Well, that's where things get interesting and lucky for us. It's all on camera. >> How much we looking at? >> More than 300. Okay. All the tags out. Okay. $1,000. >> So, get this. A woman spends 7 hours inside a Target just casually loading up over $130 worth of stuff into giant reusable bags like she's prepping for the apocalypse. She hangs around near the exits trying not to look suspicious spoiler. She totally does. Then finally makes her move. walks right past the last checkout like it's a museum and she's just browsing. That's when loss prevention steps in and the party's over. >> Okay. >> So, you don't have any sort of Illinois ID, anything like that? >> I'm not from this country. >> Okay. Well, there's a lot of people who aren't from this country but still have stuff. >> Yeah. >> Okay. Do you have a middle name? >> No. I can only do is I don't mind paying for it, everything, and then leaving. Right. >> No, that's not happening. >> Can't do that. We lost that opportunity. >> Why can't I just pay for it? >> We're We're way way way past that. >> You committed a felony. >> But if I'm paying for it, what is the harm? >> It would have been fine if you didn't leave, right? You would have had that opportunity to pay. But because you left the store at that point, you chose to not pay for it. And we can't go back. That already happened. >> So now, how do you order it or what do you do? >> You can't come back to Target. you can go to Walmart or Meyer or Kohl's or you're going to have to find a different store to shop. >> She starts pleading with the officers saying she meant to pay and begging them to just let her do it now. But the officers break it down for her once she walked past the secured checkout without paying which crossed the line into felony theft under Illinois law. No going back. Then things get even weirder. She gives them different names, refuses to show ID, and eventually pulls out an Indian ID that says her name is Jamisha. At this point, even the officers are probably wondering what chapter of the Twilight Zone they just walked into. >> Done anything? >> Oh, you have pull up your passport. >> For what? What do I do? >> Okay, so you do can pull up your passport now or we're going to take you back to the station and you can pull up your passport there. >> Please don't. I'm really >> It's really It's too late. Can you please just pull up your passport? He just You promised me that nothing is going to happen. >> I did not promise you anything. >> Of course, you said that nothing. You'll once we do this thing, you can leave. >> I No, I said as soon as we're done with our reporting, we'll try to get you out of here as soon as we can. >> Yeah. You said you'll just You won't be allowed to fight with him. We're not We're not going to fight with him. >> It's too late. >> So, what do you want me to do? >> I need you to pull up your passport. I need to see a valid identification for you. >> And then >> and then you will be going back to the station with us. I need to see your identification. >> Please don't take me. That's simp that's simply not going to happen. You don't get to have that choice anymore. You made you made lots of poor choices today and now you have to pay for the >> He said he's not going to put me in the station. >> Well, that's not He doesn't work for us. I don't know who this man is. >> I'm really sorry. I'm ready to pay for this. >> That's again, I understand that you're sorry. I know you're ready to pay for it now, but you didn't want to pay for it then. So, I need you to give me your identification. >> I'm really sorry. >> Please. >> You guys are getting a receipt. How long? >> I mean, there's a lot of stuff. She's just scanning it all into her seat. >> But she one second. He promised me that you can leave one if it's scanned. >> Simply none of my business. That has nothing to do with our job. >> So what do you want me to do? >> Passport, please. Thank you. >> So what are all those other things that you were just swiping by? >> No, that's all Indian documents. >> You can I can have I don't have my I can show you my license here. >> Your license. >> Okay. So who's what's who's Jamisha? >> Me. And this is my >> So who is who? So who's Anya? >> This is my name also. >> But this is my Jamish Aari. You can see my picture. >> Okay. >> This is me. >> Okay. So this is So this is not your first name. >> No. >> Okay. >> Even after showing some form of ID, she keeps dodging questions, trying to bargain her way out, and repeating the same line over and over. Can't I just pay for it now? But it's too late for that. Officers and store security tally up the hall. $1313 worth of merchandise before tax. That's way past Illinois's $300 felony theft threshold. So yeah, not exactly a minor misunderstanding. >> You guys need video tonight. >> I would love to have it. >> I'll start. >> Oh my god, Annayia, it's the first time I've sat down in 4 hours. >> Yeah. >> How are you not tired? >> No. >> You've been walking around for seven hours. >> Oh my gosh. I'm ready to pay for the merchandise and leave the store. >> No. I don't know why you keep repeating that. I told you no. >> So then what do you want me to do? >> I told you you're going to be coming back to the police station with us. >> Please don't do that. >> That's my job. So >> I'm really sorry. >> It's I I understand that you're sorry. >> What do I go to the police station and do? >> Ma'am, you're going to be criminally charged. >> I'm really sorry. >> Okay. I don't mind paying for the merchandise. >> Okay, I'm I'm done talking to you because you just keep repeating the same things over and over again and I keep telling you that that's not an option. We can't do that. So, I'm not going to be acknowledging that anymore because I've already determined we're not doing that. You're repeating the same thing over and over again and expecting a different response. It's not going to happen. >> One second. He promised me. >> You've already said that. We've already gone over that and it does not matter to me what he said. You still committed a crime regardless of what he said. >> Let me just pay for the merchandise now. Please. >> It's way too late to pay for it. What? What is the H? >> You had many registers to choose from. It's too late. >> I don't mind paying the for the merchandise and I'm I'm not going to come back again. >> We know, but >> let me just pay for the merchandise and finish it. I need to take these goods for everyone at home. >> And you have her walking past the last point. >> She starts to spiral, insisting the whole thing was just a big misunderstanding. Says she was on a call that the bags were way too heavy for her to actually run off. And then comes the choruses. Just want to pay repeated at least a dozen times. But the officers stay calm, cool, and consistent. Their message, it's too late. Once you cross that line, there's no one shopping your way out of it. >> Yep. >> A few times. She came up and stopped right here. I think she was seeing if it would beep or not. >> I don't know. >> And then she went back back in, grabbed her stuff, came back, stood out here, went back, grabbed. >> And then the last time she went all the way around, came back behind did one of these things. When you do that, >> did it beat them? >> No, she didn't have anything that would have. >> So, they don't want to take any money from you. They don't want any of that. They want you here. That's why we're talking. And we're not going to take any money from them. We're not going to take any money from you. Okay. We have paperwork that we got to do here. And then we have paperwork that we have to do back at the station. >> Take me to the station. Yeah. Please. How will I go back? >> For a long time. >> They were going to pick me up somewhere from Target. >> Okay. We we can call somebody once you get back there. Okay. Once we get back there, it's a lot of paperwork. All right. Sometimes it's dependent. You know, if if we do our paperwork, sometimes you can leave. Okay. Once our paperwork is done, then you leave. Then you can call somebody to pick you up from the station, which is not >> I don't want anybody to pick me up from the station. >> Then you can call an Uber. Then you can call an Uber and have someone else pick you up. If you don't want anyone else picking you up from the station, then you have to call an Uber or somebody cuz, you know, you got to get out of our custody somehow. So, you're not going to have to go anywhere tonight. You'll be able to go home, but you have you can go somewhere, wherever you want to go, but somebody else is going to have to come pick you up. >> Did you drive here? >> No. >> How'd you get here? >> They dropped me. >> Okay. Well, then they can then they can help you figure it out or you can call an Uber or whatever. >> Can't the paperwork be done here only? >> H do I need to go to the station? >> Yes. >> This amount I don't mind paying. It's not a Let me finish. >> You're starting to frustrate me. We've told you a bunch of times that is not an option. So, please stop saying that. >> Can we just please? >> Uh, that was her phone number. >> Station, >> huh? >> How do we go to the station? >> With us? >> You'll you'll ride in the car with us >> and then be there for how long >> until we get the paperwork done? Sometimes it's maybe an hour. >> Put it right here. >> Why? >> Take the bag off and put it right there. I told you what's going to happen. Stand up. suitcases. >> So, no guns, no knives, nothing like that. >> Oh, nothing. >> Just face me. >> Don't move. Just stay where you're at. >> She has a personal luggage, too. >> Yeah, it's an empty bag. >> Okay. >> So, she brought something into the store. >> It's an empty luggage. >> Trans, please. >> Hey, please. Please don't do this. >> Don't resist. It's not going to go well for you. Stop. >> What do I just We explained it to you. Okay. When you take things without permission, that's a crime. >> But what do I what do I do now? For how long is it going to be? >> Hang on. >> Huh? >> Okay. Just hang on. Okay. It's probably going to be one maybe 2 hours. Okay. It depends on how quick the paper process works. >> Please. I'm requesting you. >> See from 5 11. >> But my bag your bag will come with Don't worry. Well, your bag was traffic. 11:01 they don't sign up on your >> What do I tell the family people >> talking about 203 11 >> going to come with us? >> Do you have the trespass or no? >> I have it all. >> What do I tell the family? >> I don't I don't know what to tell you from here. >> Yeah. Do not resist. You're going to catch an extra charge. Don't do that. Just keep walking. >> What charges? >> Don't mind. That's what I said. The best thing was to pay and finish it. >> The best thing to do would be not to steal in the first place. That would be the best thing to do. >> Of course, if I could have gone, run away. It was a different thing. The minute the guy came back, I turned. He was like, "Target, Target." I said, "What happened?" He's like, "You have to, you've not paid." I said, "I don't mind paying for the items." >> But why did you walk through the doors then? >> Because I was on call with them. They said you >> you're going to walk past the last point of all the cash registers with the with the security things. >> No, if the security if if the security bars were there. Okay. I I know that if I pass that it's going to beep. >> It only beeps if you have certain items. >> See, I don't and after that the second door was there also. I didn't pass. Tell me with this heavy luggage I could have taken the things and put it in my bag also. The bane bag. You p you passed all of the points of >> not all of the points the first half point. >> No, no, you passed all of the cash registers. The >> cash registers were different and this is this side was there. >> So I'm trying to explain to I'm trying to explain something to you. So what we call the last point or the last point of final sale, right? If you pass if you take the cart full of the stuff, okay, and which which is you had you had $1,300 worth of stuff and you push the cart past all of the po all of the places that you could have paid for it and then you start to leave, >> we have a problem. >> I know. I know. I understand. I don't mind paying for it right now. I'm going to have to do the procedure now. Get target stuff again online and do ask somebody to do it. It was the simplest thing for him to tell me that next time don't come to the store and tell him that listen pay for this. And then >> she searched, detained, and gently reminded not to resist because that would only make things worse. You might mean to pay, but walking out without doing it, that's still theft. And with her hall clocking in well over Illinois's $300 felony threshold, there's no more room for excuses. Don't wait until you're caught to decide to pay intent won't undo the crime. In Illinois, crossing the checkout without paying can turn a shopping trip into a felony. What an unyielding shop lighter. The next one will react much more violently, so keep an eye out. >> 29:30, we found one. >> On June 9th, 20123, a local Best Buy in Illinois rang up the Donor's Grove police after a woman tried to buy a laptop using someone else's ID. Officers didn't waste any time. They headed straight to the scene to sort it out. >> Thank you. >> Can we just move out of the way? >> There's somebody with the car. >> Where'd you get this ID from? >> That's not me ID. >> Huh? >> That's not me. >> That's not you. >> No. >> Looks like you. >> That's not me. >> That looks like you. >> That is not That does not look like you. It looks like you >> SUV. >> All right. >> I'm not going away. I'm trying to move from the side. >> Yeah, you could move over here. >> Okay. You're not even the office. >> I'm not talking to you. >> Uh computer 1,300 bucks, >> man. >> Uh Windows this time. Windows. >> Yeah. >> The two other guys that came with her. >> I didn't come with that guy was asking me for my number actually and I was trying to move. Yeah, >> I don't know. >> I'm not talking to you. >> Two other guys. >> There was one guy there. >> From the moment officers arrived, her attitude said it all. She was already bickering with the store employee and the tension was thick. Honestly, the scam wasn't exactly subtle. You could spot it from a mile away. But of course, she denied everything like it was all just a big misunderstanding. >> Doing fraud. >> Okay. All right. Uh, so you were just in here shopping, you're saying? Yeah, I was looking at um the laptops and I asked him for a laptop, but that was about it. I didn't purchase nothing. I don't have nothing. >> Okay. Did you try to open a credit card? >> No, I didn't. >> You did not. >> He gave I asked for the information. He gave me all the information. >> Okay. Did you like provide an ID at that point? Like here's my credentials. >> No, >> you did not. >> No, I was going to try to purchase um a laptop depending on the price of it. Sure. >> And he just said okay. He got the laptop, went back there, and never came back. She was clearly bluffing because yeah, she did hand over ID to the store, but the officer wasn't about to let her backpedal that easily. He called her out on it right then and there, and let's just say her story started to unravel fast. >> I um left the Uber and I didn't even I had like two addresses so he could take me back. >> You're with the Uber? >> Yeah, but he left. So, >> okay. Yeah. Just let him know it's going to be a minute. >> All right. Give me one second. >> Okay. Just stay over here, though. >> Okay. Hello. >> Can you name please? Uber. >> She then tells the officer she needs to message her Uber, but let's be real. She was probably phoning her partner in crime. She also seemed pretty confident the cop didn't speak Spanish because the first thing out of her mouth roughly translated, "I'm screwed." Not exactly the kind of thing you say when you're innocent. >> It was a darkkinned guy and I told him, "No, I don't have." He like, "So you don't have social media?" I'm like, "No, I have a boyfriend." >> You said it was a darkkinned guy. >> Yeah, he had like braids. >> Dreads or braids? I don't know. And a hat. >> Did he have anything else like tattoos? >> No, I didn't notice. >> What was he wearing? >> I swear I I wasn't even trying to let him cuz I didn't want eye contact with him. But he was like literally right behind me. I was Oh, right where the TV is curved. That's where where I was standing and he came behind me asking me for my information. >> Okay. Do you have an ID on you? >> Uh, no I don't. >> You don't? >> She was clearly starting to sweat, visibly nervous, and scrambling for a way out. At one point, she tried to shift the blame by complaining about some other guy in the store. Classic deflection move. Whether or not she was actually working with the two other men hanging around was still unclear. But one thing was obvious. She wasn't about to snitch. Not her style. Tribe of New York, please. >> It was them. Um >> 29 30. We found one. >> Sorry, miss. Did you say no record in both? >> Yeah, no record. New York and Illinois. Okay. >> Are you out of New York? >> If I'm out of >> like Do you live in New York? That's where your driver's license is out of >> Yeah. >> Your government ID4. >> Okay. Cuz we're not getting anything back on that, which means that you know, >> her story really started to fall apart when she couldn't even name the hotel she supposedly checked out of that morning. And then came the kicker. Her license didn't come back registered out of New York like she claimed. That was the final nail in the coffin. At that point, the lies weren't just shaky. They were sinking fast. But >> were you staying in the city or were you staying on a suburb? >> What? Here? >> Yeah. Like, were you staying in Chicago or were you staying in Chicago? >> And then I just go like every time I work at a club, I go to to a next club the next day and stay at a near hotel from there or Airbnbs and stuff like that. >> Okay. All right. So, do you come for like extended like a couple weeks or just a couple days or >> No, this is my first time here in Chicago for that. Okay. All right. >> I pray that it has sound. Like >> Sure. >> Seriously. >> Yeah. I I don't know if they have like audio. I don't know how their cameras work here to be honest. >> Well, I hope if they do so at least just so he could feel stupid because I I would understand. But we definitely didn't look like we was together. >> Sure. >> But maybe cuz he saw him with his phone in his hand trying to talk to him. Maybe he >> She was doing her absolute best to play innocent. But if the store did have cameras, like she kept hoping that footage definitely wasn't going to do her any favors. Then in a surprising twist, she casually mentioned that she travels for work, specifically dancing at strip clubs in different states, which a no judgment on the job, but it definitely raises the question, how many scams has she pulled off before this one? Huh? >> This is Janette. >> Hey Janette, what what brought you in today? >> So, I just came out here like I was selling my dance at strip clubs and and from city to city and then I came in. I'm not going to lie. I was trying to get a laptop but I didn't even purchase anything. I didn't I didn't get anything. >> Okay. Well, did you give them anything up there? the ID. >> You gave him the ID and it's not you. Clearly, >> it's not me. It's someone that looks like me. >> Okay. What we're going to do is we have to place you under arrest for possession of fraud and ID. So, put your hand behind your back. >> Okay. >> And I left my bag in the Uber. So, I I don't know. >> Okay. I'm sure one of our female nurses >> Can I text my mom and let her know? >> We'll let you We'll let you call at police department. Okay. >> Let's be real. Someone struggling to pay their bills probably isn't out here dropping over a grand on a laptop. In the end, this woman's little scam came crashing down when she was arrested right in the middle of Best Buy. Talk about embarrassing. And to top it all off, she was officially charged with identity theft. Remember, if you can't afford it, don't fake it. Identity theft will always cost more than the price tag. What an unyielding shoplifter. The next shoplifter will react much more violently, so keep an eye out. >> He's got a cart full of this. Saw you walking past me. Whatever. Is he your boyfriend? Is he just a friend? Is he >> on March 29 in Florida, police were called to a robbery at Taget? >> I get another unit on the backside and make sure he doesn't screw up. I'll take one to the front with me and then the next one just go to the back side. But there's one exiting the rear driver's side of the vehicle now. He's still in there. >> Yeah. >> Police respond to a call about a stolen vehicle parked outside a Target. When they arrive, they detain one suspect near the entrance. Meanwhile, the second suspect is still inside, casually pushing around a cart loaded with merchandise like nothing's wrong. >> This is a stolen car. Keep your hands out of your pockets. Have a seat on the sidewalk here. Have a seat on the curb. You're not free to leave. Is anybody else in the car? No. >> Don't reach for anything in your bag. Okay. Are you pregnant? >> No. Okay. Hey, you're not free to go. Sit down on the curb. Sit down on the curb. >> Do not reach in your pockets and do not run. You understand? You're not free to go. You're being investigated for vehicle trespass right now. Just make sure cuz you're probably going to end up in handcuffs here in a minute. >> Why? 26. I have another uh complaintant outside of the vehicle with me. Where's your buddy at? I know there's one more inside the store. He's got a cart full of this. Saw you walking past me. Is he your boyfriend? Is he just a friend? Is he both? >> You're going to be detained in handcuffs. Thank you for being cool. >> Officers spot Patrick hanging out in the sporting goods section. As soon as they approach, he makes a run for it, but that doesn't last long. He's quickly caught and detained. Once in custody, he denies stealing anything and insists he doesn't have any weapons on him. >> Yeah. Okay, I pick that up. >> You see like possibly Hispanic male, black jacket with a beard. >> Yeah. >> And he's in the sporting goods. >> Yeah. >> 26 LP just advised. He's in the sporting goods section. We're walking over now. Black baseball cap, black hoodie, dark colored pants, black Nike shoes, long hair. >> Hey man, you're not free to leave. Go. Okay. Okay. Okay. I'm done. I'm done. I'm done. >> I'm done. I'm done. I'm done. I'm done. >> You should have done that, man. >> Never done that. I know. >> You know I was going to catch you. >> I know. So, where'd you run? >> Uh, his hat, by the way. Do >> you have any weapons on you, Corp? We have fire. You do your side. Okay. Yes, sir. >> You know, I'm no problem. >> Another suspect admits she was just the lookout, but officers aren't buying the downplay. They press her for the full story, hinting that her role in the scheme was a lot more hands-on than she's letting on. >> Maybe resisting. No, >> maybe possession stolen vehicle. cuz that's still a vehicle. >> Yeah, let's go with instruction. >> What? >> Hold on. Put you in the back here and read your rights. Okay. >> I didn't hear any I ain't do nothing wrong. I thought >> Yeah. When I realized you guys were there for me, I panic. >> That's what you're saying. >> I didn't, you know, I had no intentions of running. How about you kick the roof over there? >> Kick roof. >> Thank you guys for your service. >> I kicked the roof. >> Yes. Here you go. >> Young kid that I tried something. >> Yeah. Yeah. Let me get you some water. Fire department's here for you. Okay. >> The conversation shifts to the stolen car and the woman launches into a news story saying her friend Carla gave the vehicle to Patrick as a kind of debt payoff since it supposedly had mechanical issues. Anyway, officers of course take that explanation with a grain of salt. >> For the vehicle? >> Yeah, she gifted it to him. >> She gift just gave him this car. >> Yeah. >> To who? To Patrick? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> How much do you think that car is worth? >> Uh, not as much as you think it is. >> Okay. >> It's got a lot of issues. A lot. >> Okay. How many cars have you been given in your life? >> Um, a couple. >> A couple? >> Yeah. >> Really? You must have very nice friends. So, the thing is like like she owes him money, first of all. Second of all, that that bees a lot of issues that she can't get fixed. She doesn't have the money or the resources to get fixed. >> Hey, uh Mr. Thomas. >> Yes, sir. >> Who's the owner of the vehicle? >> Carla. >> Carla. Cuz she's saying Carla gifted the vehicle and she has a bill of sale. >> Interesting. >> Okay. So, I was flagged down. The reason I was I was flagged down because they believed you were going to shop. Okay. >> I don't do that. No, I don't. Well, they suspected he was going to, right? So, that's why I was fighting him. But what can you tell me? What can you tell me about this car? Who is this car belonging to? >> Carla? My my girlfriend? >> Carla? Is that who was in the vehicle? >> Yeah, it was not Carla I spoke with that was in the car. That's why she's mad. >> Oh, because you're talking to this girl. >> Yeah. >> Okay. So, this vehicle here is recorded as a stolen vehicle. >> Since when? >> I don't know. I didn't check the details on that. When I walked up and I ran the plate through my dispatch, they advised it was stolen. Okay, so that's the other part of this investigation. >> Police quickly spot several holes in the car ownership story, and things take a turn when Patrick is accused of getting aggressive, allegedly throwing a display case during the confrontation. What started as a theft call is now looking a lot more serious. >> That's not stolen. >> Okay. Can you show me the >> Yeah. >> Well, then why would somebody call and report it still? >> She's a crazy. >> Then why are you dealing with her? >> I I don't I I try not to. I've been telling Patrick not to in there for a long time. >> Are you dating Patrick? >> We've been off and on for like 3 or 4 years. >> Well, Patrick went in there and loaded up a shopping cart full of stuff and he was going to steal it. >> We made a good part. No, no, we aren't going to steal it. We're going to get everything. Yeah. >> I don't believe that's accurate. >> And so, if we're looking over here, who's this in the gray hoodie that's still handcuffed? >> Joel. >> That's Joel. And he was not the driver. >> Patrick earlier. [ __ ] It's cold. >> That's not that cold. You got a jacket on. I know. >> It's little. >> That's not much of a jacket. >> I know, right? I need Wi-Fi. >> I can't help you with that. >> Can I walk over towards Target? >> You can do whatever you want. Oh, wait, wait, actually, no. You cannot. Uh cuz I believe they want you trespass from Target for life. >> Okay. >> So, that means don't go into the store. Don't go in front of the store. >> Okay. Okay. >> Right. >> Um >> if you do, you can get charged with a crime. >> If you go in and shoplift, it's considered a burglary. >> Okay. >> Okay. So you can go wherever you want to try and do that. And I'll make a note that you said that you saw a bill of sale. >> He actually has a bill of sale at his house. >> Well, that'd be a great thing to bring to court. >> Okay. >> It's just is it accurate? Is it is it true or is it not? >> I know like >> cuz I know people force things and I know there are angry ex-girlfriends. Like I don't know what the truth is. Like I'm not trying to take one side or the other. >> She is angry and whatever. But she did give him the car and >> well then she wanted it back. It is what it is. Yes, you are free to go anywhere but Target. >> Officers warned the woman that just being in a stolen car could still land her with charges. She pushes back, insisting the car wasn't stolen at all and claims this whole mess is just because Carla's mad about something. Blame shifting in full effect. >> Give me the run down. >> Yeah. We're going to follow you guys down. >> Hey, brother. He's going to take the cuffs off. >> You got You got to get your feet up first. >> I was trying to get up cuz I can't. >> Let's change plan. Put your feet up first. Um, >> guess they took her. >> I will find out. >> I needed someone to get a hold of my mom. >> Yeah, we're going with you to the hospital. So, this isn't like a free pass cuz you're going to go I understand. I understand it. I need my mom to know I'm going to jail. >> Okay. Yeah. It's a short drive. We'll we'll talk you down there. >> Tell her I need to tell my mom I'm going to jail. >> Hey, also you're you're going to be trespassed for life from here. Okay. >> Don't come back. >> What do I do? >> They just don't want you here. They suspected you're going to shoplift. You're in a stolen car. Okay. Put two and two together. >> How's it going? >> The report's not finished. Thank you. >> Patrick was ultimately charged with obstruction and tampering with or interfering in an investigation. Of course, like anyone else, he's presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Don't dig yourself deeper with lies. Cooperating early can save you big trouble. Being near a crime doesn't make you innocent, especially if you're playing lookout. Do you believe this shoplifter was overreacting? Tell it in the comments section. On May 4, the 2023 officer Perez with the St. Cloud Police Department responded to a Walmart in St. Cloud, Florida for a retail theft call. A woman had been spotted at the selfch checkout pretending to scan and pay for items, then casually walked right past all points of sale like nothing happened. to work to the register and she feels like pulling this past you without standing. >> All right, man. Do me a favor. Stand up for me. Stand up. I need you to stand up here. See your tablet? Put it down. >> Come on. Stand up and turn turn around. Put your hands behind your back. [Music] They want to pro what it is. Stay right here. Do not move. Can I get my medicine, please? When it's time to hop in the patrol car, she suddenly starts stalling like she's trying to decide if she actually wants the ride. The officers stay calm and patient, gently telling her to breathe and relax. Honestly, it's almost like a spa day, except, you know, with handcuffs instead of cucumbers. >> Let me find it and then I'll I'll get it for you. Okay, >> let me pee first. I got to pee so bad. >> Ma'am, >> please sit in. >> I understand. You're just delaying the inevitable. Ma'am, please. >> My daughter, >> come on. This the seat is up. You got to You got to You got to get up, ma'am. You got to get up. >> I know. I am. >> Okay. Come on. There you go. Come on. >> Sit. Sit the right way. >> You're fine. You're fine. Watch your Please, I don't need anything. Please don't take me with my daughter. Please, >> you're fine. Just breathe. Just breathe. Okay, >> I got to breathe. Can I get a Can I just place You're going to fall. Breathe. You're going to fall. >> Okay. So, I'm going to You're fine. I'm going to let you sit like this. I'm going to buckle you in after. Just sit down and relax. Okay. >> As they're helping her into the car, she chimes in again. This time asking for her drink and a cigarette. And believe it or not, the officers actually light it for her. Yep. While she's cuffed. Talk about five-star service. Just don't expect a mint on the seat. >> We're going to let you smoke cigarettes. I'm going to let you out. Need you to just listen to whatever we say though. >> Okay. >> All right. Come on. >> I got you. Go ahead. >> I I took my shoes off cuz I started sweating. I had an ID. >> That's fine. So, here you go. >> I can't have my drink. I did pay for it. >> You want You're going to You want me to put it in your mouth for you and then light it up? >> Yeah. I got to >> I'm not going to take you out of the handcuff though. >> No, I don't. You You got it. Okay. Here, I got you. I'll I'll light it up for you. There you go. Okay. >> You shouldn't have done it tonight. >> I was I'm sober. I've been 13 days sober. I shouldn't have done it. I should have >> That's fine. You're going to keep your shoes off for now. You're fine right now. You're good. >> Yeah. Yeah. I just want to fall off. >> Oh, okay. >> I shouldn't have done it. Should have done it. >> Ma'am, don't move. Come right there. Okay, this is fun. All right, man. Go ahead. Take that. >> No, no, no. I'm throwing on. >> I will toss a cigarette. Don't throw it on the ground here. I got You're a bottle. I'll throw it in. >> I don't think you're allowed to leave cigarettes. >> I know. That's why I'm telling you not to toss it on the ground. Good. And just when you think things are finally calming down, boom, she bolts. Full on jailbreak mode. Cuffs and all. The officers spring into action, chase her down, and literally tackle the situation. Once she's back in custody, they tell her, "You just made it 10 times worse. I can't. I can't. I can't. I can't. No. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I lose everything. Please let me take >> How many opportunities did we give you? Let's smoke and then we're going to start taking off. Guess what? That's another chance now. Get in. >> Get in. Step up. >> [ __ ] her. Sit back. She starts pleading again, saying she'll pay for everything and swearing she's a good girl. But at this point, the officers aren't buying it. They make it crystal clear things went from bad to worse the moment she tried to run. And now it's not just about unpaid groceries anymore. >> I don't want to lose everything. I'm a good girl, please. I just can't. >> Oh, I'll pay for everything. Why can't I pay for everything and and be done with it? >> We'll debrief and talk about it all later. >> Y Oh, I already know there's what it is about it, right? >> Yeah. >> So, I know what's what's coming out of it. >> It's not something that happen, right? >> No. Yeah. Yeah. >> Like guaranteed >> with the highest >> never again. >> This is me and going together. >> One ruins for all, bro. In the end, the woman was charged with petite theft and resisting without violence. Her sentence, six months of probation. Not exactly the dramatic escape she was hoping for. Just a long walk down the path of court dates and check-ins. Don't pretend to pay and definitely don't run. Both will cost you more than the groceries. What starts as a small theft can turn into a full-blown criminal record real fast. What do you think about these situations?
