I got her side. I want to hear your side. I'm not going to tell you what she told me. I want to hear what she told you. >> I want to hear you hit the car over there. >> Yes. >> For what? >> It's very >> For what? >> People who are dumb enough to shoplift usually aren't smart enough to get away with it. After all, in today's world of surveillance footage and cell phone cameras, it's almost [music] impossible to sneak out of a business with unpaid merchandise. So, right when they thought they might get away, that's when these dumb shoplifterss get instant karma served to them by the cops. >> I might as well be arrested. >> You're not. Just hold on. Okay, so I got to figure out who she is. >> On July 29th, 2023, officers at a grocery store responded to an ongoing shoplifting report. The woman is stopped outside with a cart full of unpaid groceries and initially claims her receipt is on her phone. >> Hello, ma'am. >> Yeah, >> I'm also employ police department recorded. Do you have a receipt for all this? >> Um, that's my phone. Bye. >> Okay. Can I see it? >> My phone is going out. >> Okay. >> So, they just watched you walk out past all points of sale without a receipt. So, >> Oh, no. Nobody. Uh, who >> can we go back and figure it out then? >> My Uber's coming, sir. Okay. Well, then uh I'm going to have no choice. You're being detained at this point. You're not free to leave because I believe you have stolen all this stuff. >> No, I did not take this. This right here, the dress. >> Okay. >> Can we go back inside and figure it out then? >> That's what she's saying. >> No. Can we go back inside and figure it out or were you >> Well, listen. Sorry. My Uber's coming. So, >> no, you're not going then. >> Why? >> Working fine. >> Okay, let's figure it out. >> Okay, let's go. >> I'm I'm going to be late for my Uber. Can you show me on another contact at the front line? >> Well, then you'll just have to call a new one. Let's go. >> No, I don't because my my insurance is not caught. My insurance is not covered. >> Okay. So, this is what's going to happen right now. Either we go figure this out or I'm going you're being detained for this. We're going to figure it out and then if you've stolen this stuff, then I will arrest you for it. Or we can go inside and solve this issue and then we don't have to go down that route. It's your call. I was I was standing right here when you walked out. So, let's go back inside and just try to figure it out. >> Okay. >> Okay. That's probably the best route. >> Inside, she admits she did not pay for the items and also reveals she doesn't have enough money to cover the total cost. Officers begin to the items which fill the cart. >> You put that back in there. Hey, no. No. Leave your first. Okay. And we're just going to walk over here to the back. We're going back in right now. Okay. Okay. So, what's what's going on? Let's keep going this way. >> I just need some stuff. >> Okay. Let's go over here. I'm going to have you sit down on this. Okay. So, you didn't pay for anything, right? You sit down. Okay. All right. Um, so we'll get you a total in a list. >> All right. But want to prosecute? >> Yeah. Both. >> All right. >> You think it's over 2,000? >> Probably not. >> Those are those are mine. >> I know. >> Those are two tools in the >> lobby. The officer tells her she's being arrested for theft, but appreciates her honesty. During a search, they find another person's ID card belonging to a man in her purse. >> It's a little bit better. So, I appreciate your honesty. Honesty goes a long way with me, okay? So, I appreciate you being honest. Um, did you not see me sitting here? Okay. Okay. So, they want to press charges for the theft. Okay. So, I'm not going to take you to jail. >> All right. >> But, so, um, >> charge is what happens. >> Well, you're going to get So, I'm not going to issue you a site today cuz then I'd have to book you and release you. Okay. So, like I said, I appreciate the honesty. Honesty goes a long way with me. If you keep that up, then this will be a much quicker process. Okay, there's two options that we have. Okay, so right now you are under arrest, though. Okay, just so you're aware of that. Um, I'm going to Where is your I'm going to search your bag here cuz this is on your person. Is there anything else in here that doesn't belong to you? >> No. >> Are you sure? >> Where did you get these? >> I got those at Target. Do you guys sell these? >> Yes. >> That's my daughter that I use. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> So, you don't have a ID or driver's license on you? >> Yeah. >> Where? >> Oh, on the front. >> Officers process a trespass order banning her from the store for 3 years until July 29th, 2020. They contact the store to gather receipts and footage and confirm. >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. And just so you're aware, you've been trespassing in this Fred Meyers for 3 years. If you come back, you're subject to arrest. Today's date is the 29th of July uh the 2023. So if you return by July 29th of or 2026, you are subject to arrest. Yeah. I'll just take the uh the itemized sheet once you get it. And then um uh can you pull video? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. Cuz I'll um and then I'll get you a case number and a card. Uh have you done the Axon up link or do you normally email it? >> Okay. >> Yep. So I'll give I'll give you an email so you can send me the link. >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And then I'll upload the video. Walk out. >> Yeah. >> Oh, I just uh >> Who's this? >> Hers. So she walked out with like just a cart full of stuff. Uh uh. >> I I missed the one in custody park. >> Yes. >> All right. >> Anyone else in that car right there? >> Which one? >> Or which car are you? >> Yeah. So, here. >> I guess I'm playing catchup. Sorry. >> This is what I need. So, these two things were in her purse. I need to get you to go find out who that is and contact him. >> These are in the purse. We need to do what? >> Those were in her Yeah, those are in her wallet. So, I need to figure out who that is and if he's >> The store reports that she walked straight out with the cart, admitting she didn't pay when confronted. The total value of the stolen goods is about $940. >> Aware that she's in possession. >> Oh, gotcha. Okay. Who did she say this is? >> She says it's her neighbor. That she's >> It's her who? >> It's her neighbor/boyfriend. >> Her neighbor. >> Yeah. Which I mean, if that's true then and he's okay with it, then she can have it. But if not, >> if she if she if if he allows her to have that, then she can have possession of it. >> Yeah. Okay. >> But if not, >> contact this person. >> Yeah. >> You want to leave this open or close? >> Uh, you can close it. >> Close it. >> Hello. >> Hey, brother. >> You were the one that called this in >> or so. Long story short, >> you stand over here. >> This gentleman was here to call him on another suspicious vehicle that was here that he went and cleared. Okay. >> When he came back and was addressing me with what happened, this lady just straight walked out. My apparel associate was behind her like, "Hey, this jewelry just fell out of her purse." She hadn't gone through check stands and he proceeded to follow her out over between the two red vehicles over there. And he's like, "What's going on?" She's like, "Yeah, I didn't pay you." >> He's like, "Yeah, I didn't pay for this stuff." >> Pay for what? Do you know what you take? >> Oh, yeah. They're they're counting it up now. It It's a big I mean, there's probably over $100 just in alcohol alone in the cart. >> Okay, I'll work on this. All right, so what do we What was our grand total? >> $916. >> Well, that was glass that didn't have EPC, so >> plus another 22. Given the amount and her lack of proper ID, they decide on a book and release arrest. She'll be fingerprinted at jail and then released. >> Let's go back inside, figure it out. And then as we're walking back in, she's like, "Okay, I took everything." I was like, "All right, okay." >> So, 9:40. Yeah. >> Yeah. That's a >> Do you want me to do the transport for you then? >> Ah, I don't Well, so I was Are you good here? >> Well, no. So, I was curious. So, initially because I thought you guys were going to have the occupied bird. I was just going to sight and release. Well, I wasn't even going to sight and release, but now that we have Manning, >> um, we could sight and release and that way um, I don't have to follow through investigations. I can just have the site now. >> Book and release. >> It would be a book and release, but be a sight and well cuz I that way she'd have the site, right? you know, so it's tighter and then um cuz then it'll just be still not in custody. >> No, it's not. You don't have to in custody, but are you going to take her to the jail? >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Could you process it for me? Just that way she's IDed because um I don't like that she doesn't have a driver's license or she doesn't have any ID on her and >> No photo. >> There is a do photo, but she has someone else's ID. The woman explains she came to the area by Uber, allegedly covered by her insurance transportation program, and that she was visiting her daughter in a local shelter. >> So, I'd like to have a fingerprint out just to be >> Okay. You know. >> Okay. >> What's What's Davis working on? >> He's he's working the ID. >> Okay. So, I'll I'll move my car over and we can swap. >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> That'd be awesome. So yeah, if you want to send me the details in the email and then a link to submit everything. >> Yeah, I will. That will be my next thing >> because I'll I'll need her name and my report. >> That'll I'll be Yeah, I'll just add that. I'll add that to the email. >> Perfect. To see my daughter. >> To see your daughter? >> She's in. >> Due to the large amount of stolen merchandise, the officers proceed with the arrest. A female officer is called to perform a search before she's transported. >> A lot. That was a lot of items. All right. So, I'm going to have to have you go ahead and take a step out for me. So, she needs to walk to walk. >> Um, no. I haven't I haven't searched her at all. Do you would you object? >> Let's have Jennifer come since she's working. Yeah. Do a search. >> Okay. Come back. Okay. >> In this jail or? >> No. >> Pierce County. >> She is formally charged with felony shoplifting processed and released from the jail. Honesty may lessen the severity of consequences, but it cannot undo the act of theft. Every choice has a cost. Integrity is always the wiser investment. But this is still not the worst case. Yeah, they have it here. I'm going to have to talk to them though. Something I got a key in that pocket. [clears throat] Sorry. >> Is this your backpack here? This backpack. This is >> good. >> You're you're a top Tom driven, but what are you missing? >> I just mean information >> and >> footage >> and >> statements >> and Hop alone. Honored. >> What's your position here? >> CVS's district asset protection manager initiated an internal investigation after a controlled substance audit revealed discrepancies. >> District asset protection manager. He was a national drug diversion manager. >> Corporate. >> All right. So, I need your ID as well. >> Who initiated the investig investigator? All right. How did CVS find all the narcotics services? >> Yeah. So, we do periodic counts on controlled substances um about a week and a half ago, I think it was. This store, we do what's called cycle counts. So, when they cycle count it, it matches to what they should have in stock. If there's a difference, it flags it. And then the pharmacy managers have the ability to escalate it to us to take a look at. So about a week and a half ago, the pharmacy manager in this store had a flag on his local 5 milligram >> where we're showing like 349 tablets off. >> Surveillance footage showed Sylvia removing pills from bottles, ingesting them on site and at times placing unmarked vials under the counter to take home later. >> She escalated that to us. They came to me and I was assigned the investigator for it. Um I started looking at it. I went through all the past cycle counts um for what we call the inventory period which mean for for us we uh we inventory control substances every May 1st. >> So from May 1st to now I could see what we call negative cycle count so where it looked like somebody was actively taking it.
