It's later revealed the suspect is only 12 years old. Listen to me. >> You're making this worse for yourself. >> Look at me. >> Don't grab me. I'm talking. I will whip your >> to Are you listening to me? I need your attention here. Are you listening to me? Are you listening? Are you listening to me? >> Calm down. You're making this worse. >> Put your leg in. But you're making this worse. >> Dollar Tree. >> The only way that you can make this better is if you stop. >> You You cannot resist right now. You're already in handcuffs. Put your leg in. Come on. Put your leg in. >> Hey, listen. I need your attention here. Put your leg in. I'm trying to help you, >> man. Shanty, I'm tired of this. This is sex. >> Put your leg in. >> Put your leg in. Hey, >> hey, put your leg in. I'm trying to help you. >> I'm trying to tell her something. >> You can't talk to her right now. >> Not right now. >> Once you come around here with us, we can help you out. Okay. >> How the [ __ ] you going to help me out? Come on. Shante, >> put your feet. Put your feet and we roll out the window. Police and witnesses discuss the sequence of events. She was seen stealing from Target, swinging the knife while leaving and running into Dollar Tree to evade capture. >> Sir, I just saw her this morning. >> Where's everybody else? She got caught in the morning. 9:00. >> She's climbing over the seat belts on the back here. Go from that side to this side. She's standing up, squatting back there in the seat. >> Cuz she trying to talk to somebody. I don't know if she did this by herself. >> You had the knife, right? >> Yeah, it's in my car. Were there other people with her? >> Uh, this group came up when I when I saw her. It was somebody walking with her. I watched the camera, >> but I'm not sure if they was stealing it with her. >> Uhhuh. >> Target didn't say that somebody was They didn't say that somebody was stealing it with her, but maybe I just didn't want to disturb you at all. >> So, the female in the blue jean jacket the moment I got out and walked up, she goes, "What's going on? What happened?" And started to reach for that box with the cables on it. I said, "No, no, no. Leave that right there. Get out of there. Don't go in that store." And then she came out a half second later and I was like, "Hey, hey, you saw you go running in there." She was, "Yeah, I was following her." >> Yeah. And then when we started to get close to her, she started to kind of twist a little bit. He reached and pulled the knife out of her pocket. >> Yeah. >> I saw it swinging. She was swinging it, walking out of Target. >> Yeah. I mean, >> and then I see her hair and I was like, "It's our girl." >> She was holding the blue doo dad and had this bag in her hands. This was sitting right there in the front cuz I saw her come zipping across cuz I was kind of slow rolling it right there when they when I saw that last update. >> Puppies. >> She came out of there with that lady to eat one day. >> I don't know. Find out. You want us to tell you what happened? >> Sure. You guys want to tell me? >> Okay. What you got, man? >> Family members and bystanders arrive at the scene, but officers clarify that the child is the only one being arrested. She insults officers, refuses medical help, and continues to argue while awaiting transport. >> Are they on the right? If they not, they call it. >> We uh we pull a butcher knife off of one of them who we were here because of stealing. So >> I I would I would personally say that's probably not >> right, you know. But >> does anybody work for Dollar Tree? >> How you doing? >> Hey Zuma, did you have anybody steal anything from you just a minute ago? >> No, I don't think so. Miss Linda, >> that that young girl that ran out of here, she was coming in from somewhere else, right? >> Yeah. She think she ran I was over there, so I didn't really see anything. But most Miss Flender said she ran in the door. I think she might have been running from another >> um >> she was running from us. Yeah. >> So, okay. I just want to make sure nothing got snatched up in that few seconds cuz I saw her go running in here and that was >> So, I just want to make sure everything was okay. >> Okay. >> I got that out of Home Depot. >> What happened? >> I got that out of Home Depot. The little pocket thing with the screws in it to fix my bike. And I bought it because I automatically tighten up the little handle part and that's only $20 bill. We have we have a report of a signal one in progress at Memorial Security's requesting a 21. They have an officer while families are fighting in the ER parking lot. >> Who is he? Okay. Well, let me tell you. We're in the back seat. Guess who? The only one who is going to jail right now is you. >> We need to tell her something. You want some handcuffs, too? >> Okay. >> I remember you. I know you remember me. You remember me? >> Go back over there. >> Oh, I remember. >> Bro, just yell it. >> I most definitely remember you. You remember me? >> Where you talking to? >> Huh? >> I remember you, too. You want me to tell you what I remember? >> Roll it up. >> Can y'all go over there, please? I need all of y'all over there. >> You go to Target yet? >> Only until then when they requested officer. All right. So, I got a supervisor on the way. >> Okay. Um, I requested an ambulance. Okay. So, I'm not sure when they'll get here. >> What's up? >> I don't need a damn ambulance. I want to go. >> Though shoplifting is minor, officers must prioritize safety. The suspect used the knife to remove tags and stole about $155 worth of items. Right now I don't feel like hearing that because if I if I have to pee on the floor I really will be associated. >> Nurse, >> you do understand this behavior is what led to all of this to begin with, right? >> No, it begin with you following it. >> Okay, >> nurse and accusing me of trying to somebody. >> What you here for? >> Stuff. >> I'm at you anyway. So, you might not >> a bunch of charges. >> Just tell them tell them what's up. It's written on the paper. >> Yeah. I don't know them. >> Uh, shoplifting and then felony obstruction. Um, possession of tools for a crime. >> I mean, I feel like it's just cuz I'm black, but >> she was charged with shoplifting, obstruction, possession of tools for a crime and battery on an officer, but remained innocent until proven guilty. Even minor crimes can turn dangerous when suspects choose violence over cooperation. Respecting authority and staying calm can prevent small mistakes from becoming life-changing consequences. It not the kaziest incident you can see the next case even more. >> Oh well, no, cuz you don't need that. >> Okay. Well, >> on March 4th, 2025, officers responded to a shoplifting complaint from a local Kohl's. This footage is of the events that followed. >> All right, cool. Oh, >> hello ma'am. >> His phone and he chased me across traffic. >> Okay. It's probably cuz [snorts] >> maybe you had stuff that didn't belong to you. >> He's accusing me of that and now I didn't do anything wrong. >> Okay. >> He said if nothing pass you and I said that's fine. You can trespass me. >> Okay. >> I said I've been walking today. >> Did you want to talk with me outside just so we're not in middle of a doctor's office? >> Yeah. I called my husband because he would not stop following me. Like he he like chased me all the way across the street. I had to like >> run through oncoming traffic to try to get away from >> Understood. Yeah. So we're we'll make it right whatever is going on. >> Um first and foremost, so I like to u stay safe and so he the guy who is following you, he called us. Um and then I guess did you also call us as well? Yeah, I don't know if I didn't get routed to the right place or what, but it >> it did come through. >> I did. I hung up when I got in here. The lady let me in here and she said she would call the police and I said, "Okay." And they said I could sit down. >> Yeah. So, it did come through. >> Hello. >> Hey, are you here? >> Negative. I'm out with a female. Uh, loss prevention is going to be at Firestone. >> Um, going to try to recover some property from over there. So, we'll need someone to meet the LP guy at Firestone and then go to Kohl's as well. >> Hello. >> Can Can you please come pick me up? >> Okay. Then >> for start by going to Firestone >> and if there's property discarded in the bathroom, just take pictures of it. [sighs] >> All right. Um, so first and foremost, uh, I just want to make sure everyone's safe. Um, >> yeah. So, me, can you escort me away from here? So, where he can't follow me anymore? >> So, he is not here. So, he was here and he's over at Firestone now. Firestone. >> Um, because I guess that's where you were. And um, it was believed that maybe some property that was in your bag might be in there. >> I just don't have any. Um, so that um, so there was mention that you mentioned to him that you're armed and maybe that's just because you were scared. Um, so >> it was because I'm scared. I do I can I had you I don't want to go reach my back or anything. I can take it off. I can hand it to you. If that makes you more comfortable, I can take my jacket off and hand it to you. >> Okay. Now, do you have any weapons currently? >> I don't. Okay. >> I said that because I was terrified and obviously he didn't care cuz he kept following me. >> Yeah. Understood. Um, would I be able to search your bag and make sure? >> Yeah. >> Check for any stolen items. >> You're going to look here and I can pull this out so you can see my concealed permit. >> Well, um, do you have the weapon on you? No. Then I'm not too concerned. Here. Um, here. We'll wait by my car. It's a nice safe >> area here. Um, likehere. >> So, he is nowhere near here. So, I >> You just said right across the street. >> He's right across the street. >> Followed me across the street once. Like, what's just happened? He's not. So I've I I know him um because he works at Kohl's and >> creepy. So >> who chases a woman? Like I had several old men ask me if I needed help. I had people like >> um so let's start with the bag thing. So uh you said no weapons and no stolen property in your bag or anything like that? >> Nope. >> Okay. Is is it okay if I search it and make sure? >> Yeah. >> In your jacket. >> 218. >> Thank you. >> I went into calls to look for something and I am walking out. I'm like almost out of the parking lot. This guy's running after me. Like I don't know who he is. He's like in pain. >> Is it okay if I take your ID out? >> I was going to tell you absolutely. Yeah, it's it's out and >> Okay. >> Um Oh, well, no, cuz you don't need that. >> Okay. Well, as soon as uh it's determined whether a crime was or was not committed. Um I I will >> I didn't commit a crime. >> Well, we're going to find out. >> I don't have anything on me. I don't I did not commit a crime. >> Okay. So, I'm just saying that because that guy's accusing you of it. >> Yeah, I know. But I don't have anything on me. >> I I did I did not steal anything from him. So, so we're going to check the cameras at Kohl's and if it's determined that you did, then I will get your ID. That's how that works. Okay. >> So, I can leave in the meantime? >> Nope. You're detained. Not allowed to leave. If you try to leave, you'd be arrested. >> How can you detain me when I haven't committed a crime? >> Because someone >> I'm accusing him of a crime and you're not detaining him. >> One second. Getting a phone call. >> Officer search her bag with consent. She has a concealed permit, but no weapon. She repeatedly donnies any stolen items. >> Thanks. >> Hey, Brown. >> How's it going, bro? >> Good. Um, so at the end of the day, loss prevention. Um, accusing her of stealing >> and then >> like someone plain clothes, chasing me. I didn't. No crime is committed. You have no proof. You have no right to detain it. >> Yes, I do. Absolutely do. So, you're not leaving. If you leave, you're going to go to jail right now. So, you're staying right here. That's That's not true. >> That's how it works. And I already explained that to you, right? >> I know my rights and I have not done anything wrong. You cannot detain me. >> Yeah. Someone accuse you of a crime. >> I'm accusing him of a crime and you're not detaining him. >> So, he's Cole's security. >> It doesn't matter who he is. You cannot harass people. You cannot put your hands on people. You cannot chase people. I'm a female. >> We are not holding court. Okay. This is how it's going to work. You're going to stay here until we figure out what's going on. >> You know that that's illegal. So, >> okay. >> It's illegal. >> I have not done anything wrong. >> Put this down. You're not putting this back on. And you're not leaving. >> Yes, I am. Let go of my >> Because I didn't do I'm not Listen, I'm cold. I'm not leaving. >> The officer informs her she is being detained while they investigate and she protests, claiming she knows her rights and hasn't committed a crime. >> Right now, you're not leaving. So, you're being detained until we figure out what's going on. >> Oh my god. >> Oh my god. I know my rights. You guys are going to be in so much trouble. >> Okay. Well, you're being detained. >> Please let How far am I going to get with cups on? >> Okay. >> Calm down. >> Let go of me. >> Calm down. >> You're the one who got uncalled and it's on. >> Is your body camera on? I was trying to put my jacket on. >> Okay. So, ma'am, >> I wanted my stuff back. He searched my jacket. He searched my purse. Listen, >> I I understand. So, >> you searched my jacket. You searched my purse. It's windy. I wanted my jacket back on. That's it. You're the one who got violent >> cuz you're trying to leave the scene. >> I'm not trying to leave. >> You just told us. >> You told me you were leaving and you were putting your jacket on and walking away. What are you talking about? >> Okay. Okay. I understand. I understand. Thank you. >> So, ma'am, what we're going to do, I'm going to have you sit on this bench and then once we're And then we're going to play the waiting game. Can you please take these off of me? >> No. >> They're hurting. >> They're not meant for comfort. And >> I didn't do anything wrong. >> They're hurting me. I have >> So, how about this? How about you work with us? Cuz we're being nice to you >> and you're trying to escalate the situation. >> But if we can all agree to be nice, I >> So, how about you take it down a notch? Let us let us figure out what's going on. You >> didn't say actually you did, but that's irrelevant to right now cuz it's not a big deal. But let us figure out our job and figure out what's going on here. And if nothing happen, you'll be on your way. >> And then you're gonna be sued for doing this. You're doing what you need to do. >> Yeah. Because I have a female detained for now. It's being uncooperative. >> I'm not being uncooperative. >> Let's come sit over on this bench. >> I would like my property, please. >> Can you please put the propert in the car? >> No, I want to sit on the bench, but you have no right to have my stuff. >> She tries to leave, leading to a brief struggle. Officers place her in handcuffs for attempting to flee. She insists on her innocence and demands the cuffs be removed. >> Out. >> I do. >> And I'm going to run your neck. That's how that works. >> I didn't I did not steal anything. I don't have anything on me. This is illegal. >> Yoink. >> This is illegal. >> No, it's not. >> Yes, it is. And And if you don't I'm not surprised you don't know it because a [clears throat] lot of officers don't understand the law though. >> No. Why you you still live in Fort Myers? >> Okay. Well, >> you >> This is what happens. This is what happens when you come to Charlotte County and commit crimes. >> You have no right. I did not do anything wrong. I do not have any stolen property on me. >> Yeah. It's not on you because you But you still deprived Cole. All right. Well, camera footage and a witness do anything wrong >> is probably going to say otherwise. So, [clears throat] >> I didn't do anything wrong. >> Okay. >> And you can't hold me. You can't >> just watch her. And >> first, like Sephora and everything. >> So, she was at Sephora. >> Yeah, there's a Sephora inside of Kohl's. I was watching the cameras. I saw that she had a bag like underneath her jacket, which I thought was strange. I started to watch her on cameras and and I saw that she would select items off the shelves, put them into the bag. The bag was getting bigger and then eventually she exited the store without paying. I confronted her. I said, "Hey, I'm lost with clothes. I'd like you to, you know, give me my stuff back. She feigned ignorance. I don't know what you're talking about, man. Get away from me. I don't have nothing. I said, why don't you just give me the stuff back? We'll trespass you. You know, you'll be on your way. She said, I don't have anything. Get away from me. And then she she ran from coals over this way. She went into Firestone here and her bag was very full at that time. >> Um, matter of fact, that's that's what I have on video here of here. You can see her bag is so so full. >> And then when when she came out of the bathroom there, I didn't follow her into the bathroom. I just waited, you know, and then when she came out, her bag was flat like a pancake. >> Okay. Oh, okay. >> I didn't go through this yet, but I know. I just took a peek and I seen a couple things of coals like that, so I know I know it's in there. >> You um since you have gloves, do you mind pulling them out? >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Let me just save this real quick. >> Take a picture. Whatever. >> This is a trash bag. Go ahead. >> Do you know Well, you have to dig it for yourself as well. >> Yeah. I mean, I'll upload that for you guys, too. Send me like ax on or whatever. >> Yep. And then so I'm going to need a little bit of statement from you. [laughter] >> I threw that out earlier. >> I'm going to get a garbage so we don't >> bag was thick when she came in. She went right to our trash. >> And he seen it, too. He said he's willing to give a statement. >> Okay. Do you have um cameras? >> No. >> No. Okay. This my eyeball. >> A Kohl's loss prevention officer reports seeing her on surveillance filling a concealed bag in Sephora inside Kohl's then fleeing to Firestone and discarding the items in the restroom. >> Uh, no. It'll be easier cuz I got a scanner and I go right in there. >> Oh, okay. I didn't see that you had a scan. >> Yeah. >> I don't know. For some reason, I feel like this is a little more than what you're saying. >> It It probably is. It does a bit more. Watch it go to a mouth. It is. I just know alone like foundation for myself is like 43. So >> well yeah like I said sometimes it's even the officers are shocked when I tell they're like no no no what kind of math are you doing and I'm like look I said this this box is 100 bucks you know not that one really but just you know for example >> the beauty products are worth a lot. Oh yeah. Like I don't know what the majority of it does and know that it's expensive and a little man I need to stop giving people the benefit of the doubt cuz I did see her like a little bit earlier and like I felt bad because our Sephora staff like was like on break or they wasn't they weren't here yet whatever. So like I saw her in Sephora like alone and I was like oh like that poor thing like like there's nobody there to like help her. And then later on I was just like wait a second like she's glad nobody's there. >> She's glad nobody's there. Maybe that's why she chose to come. >> You know, it's >> perfect timing. Yeah. Well, I'm sure it's not her first time. She definitely seemed pretty, you know, sure of herself. And >> recovered items are photographed and cataloged. Loss prevention confirms the amount stolen appears to exceed $1,200, making it felony theft. >> I only was likeal it by,000. >> I looked at it. I'm like, this is a felony amount. And I was like, I don't know what he's thinking, but he's a lost prevention. He knows more than I do. >> It was 1,000. I think the toilet paper I think the paper towels were covering a lot of it. [laughter] >> Police determined the theft qualifies as felony retail theft under Florida law due to the amount stolen. She cannot be released via adult pre-arrest diversion APAD and must go to jail to await bond >> history from doing a pad. But the amount of stuff that she stole from Kohl's exceeded the Florida statute amount to where it became a felony. So, because it's a felony theft, unfortunately, she has to take the trip and then you can she'll she'll call you once she's down there to kind of update you. Um and then she just has to bond out. Okay. >> Um due to her having little to no criminal history, she I I don't know if there's I know she has to speak to a judge and he has to set the bond and all that. I don't know when that will be, but I'm sure shortly after. um she would probably be released, you know, upon paying whatever the bond is, but that's what we're looking. >> So, today, >> I hope so. I don't know what times. I know usually it's in the morning. It's still kind of morning. >> The woman is charged with felony theft and resisting a retail merchant. Officers note she has little to no criminal history, so she may be released after seeing a judge and posting bond. Even if you claim innocence, security footage and discarded evidence can still support felony charges. Two black females in a white SUV. >> And he described your clothes, black t-shirt, pink pants. Listen, I have reasonable suspicion for you to go back up there and for him to either identify you or say you're good. If you're good, then you leave and it's done. And you can file a report if you wish. I'll give you my badge number, my name. >> It's not your fault, though. I I understand. >> And that if that man calls and he says he don't know, I'm leaving. They say heavy set black female wearing a black t-shirt and pink pants and a white SUV. That's all I need to make you go up front. >> That's crazy. >> Okay. She said she wanted to get stuff for the girls and for the boys and everything. So, she told me to come get the car. She told me to come get the car. I went and got the car. I don't know. She came out. She didn't have anything. >> Right now, you're being detained. Okay. >> I'm being detained >> for obstructing official business. >> Okay. >> You behave yourself. I will discuss releasing you with a sus. Okay. I am. I'm not. >> All right, let's take a walk. Go back to the car. >> I don't know what's going on. They stop me talking about Santana. >> Hold on. >> I'm going to ask you a couple questions. Okay, but I got to read this to you before I ask any question legally. Did you guys attempt to stop them? >> Yes. >> Okay. I stopped at the when you put the car first. >> Okay. >> Yeah. So, Phil and I are headquarters and then I was up here with him and I put him and Justin both on them. My store manager was like, >> "Losts prevention reports both women pushed past staff, loaded merchandise, and left. Items recovered before they exited fully. Officers planned to charge for both obstruction and theft. >> You can write me." So, I want to charge him with obstructing for running and lying to me when I had him stopped up front. So, I need a brief statement. Hey, we tried to stop them. They pushed past us. We were able to get the items, but we observed. Officer McCoy stopped him in the lot. However you want to word it in your words. Um, but I just need that to charge him with obstructing as well. >> You want me to get his statement and Justin's? >> It doesn't matter. And I when I walked out this way, I was walking to the car and I heard him on the phone, but I didn't know. You know what I mean? >> Okay. All right. >> So, he was like, "Uh, he said, "I can't." He said, "I can't say you stole it cuz you didn't make it out the store, but I do still have to call the police." I said, "I wasn't going out the store." >> Okay. Well, put put your foot back in. I'm going to figure out what they want to do and we'll go from there. Okay. >> Thank you, sweetie. >> Yep. So, uh, they called one and I when I was on the way here, another one took off on them. So, I don't think after talking to him, I think little sister, I'm just going to cut her loose cuz she had really no idea what was going on. But I think the older one who pushed out the door. >> The younger woman was released after determining she likely had no knowledge. I wasn't oblivious like, "Oh, can you put this in my backpack?" >> Yeah. Yeah. >> So, you kind of you kind of knew you kind of suspected that it was >> I definitely know what I was doing and I definitely took part of it and I acknowledged that it was wrong, but I >> at the same time it was just like okay like I I because we had already taken it. So, it's like I mean I'm not going to have like like like might as well just you know give it to me so it looks it doesn't look so bad like you you have you know multiple things and I and I you know what I mean? Like it just I I wanted to take the fall as well if we were going to get in trouble and that was my decision. It was stupid and I wanted to stop but at this point it's too late. I mean I I acknowledge I was >> fair enough. I appreciate you being honest and not trying to >> to [ __ ] me or or do anything else like that. You know >> it's too by that time it was >> the the hard part is is that there's there's cameras everywhere. The officer explained that scanners and cameras tracked everything, giving the company a clear view of what was in their bags each time they entered or left the building. So, confession or not, the evidence was undeniable. Now, it was time to see if Andre would be as forthcoming as his friend Adam. >> How we doing? >> Pretty good. How about you? >> Good. >> You're Andre? >> Yes, sir. >> Howard is night. >> I'm Officer Chris Smith with the Salt Lake City Police Department. >> Okay. So, uh, first thing, do you have your ID with you? >> Uh, yes. >> And so, Satchel is kind of the point person for all of this. And coming up to Reggie. Reggie seemed off and was like, "Hey, I need, you know, help me out here. Take these." He took those. >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Did you take anything else with you? >> Uh, besides the um >> the shoes. >> Took the shoes. What did you do with your other shoes? wants to be brought in to work. >> Huh? >> The >> Oh. Oh, those shoes. Yeah. Oh. Uh, I can't even lie. Uh, I I threw those away. You just pitched them and said, "I'm out." >> So, you took the new shoes and threw the old ones away, right? Uh, yeah. Cuz the ones I had, uh, well, I mean, he would have they were pretty rough. >> Yeah, they they looked a little rough. Like >> talking out the soul was kind of rough. So, >> Andre shared that he had previously been homeless, but had recently been staying with Reggie, the third person involved. When questioned, Reggie also admitted to the theft. It turned out to be one of those rare cases where multiple suspects cooperated fully with law enforcement without any unnecessary drama. >> All right, my man. So, here's what's going on tonight. >> Okay. After sorting through all of this, >> um, unfortunately, you are going to be going to jail tonight. Okay. Just based off the dollar amount, it turns it into felony level theft. Okay. Um, no. Like we talked about, I know you have some of the items still still in your possession. Yes. >> I'm going to give you Steve's contact information. >> First time being in trouble. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> So, what what typically happens is >> first- time offenders, they get booked and they get released on what's called pre-trial services. You got to essentially you got to call in. They're people that help you keep up with your court date and make sure that you're following through on your commitments. Um, after after that occurs, reach out to Steve, say, "Hey, look, >> go about that. >> I'm bringing this stuff back." And the reason that I'm telling you, so State of Utah, any sort of theft, they can charge you up to three times the dollar amount for restitution. So, >> contrary to the claims many criminals make about [music] police abusing their power, these officers acted with complete professionalism. They appreciated the suspect's honesty and treated each of them with respect and courtesy. Even the employer had kind words for them despite the fact that they had stolen from the business. >> Look at what officer say here. Appreciate what you done. Sorry I had to end this way, man. I hear that. Um but good luck. All right. >> All right. Thanks. >> Yep. We'll grab your bag. >> Yeah, I do apologize. The smaller the wrist, the tighter they get. >> Yes. Middle. Unfortunately, it's a big it's a big building. So, >> are you coming in with us? >> Yes, I'm coming out. >> Will you learn? >> Why have we got two phones? >> So, always >> one girlfriend, the other girlfriend. Just playing [laughter] >> polygamy. >> Hey, come on now. [laughter] >> No. >> The smile on board's face. >> Uh, Reggie, I like you. >> Although the officer liked Reggie, he was the only one arrested that day because the value of what he'd stolen qualified as a felony. As for Adam and Andre, the company couldn't determine exactly how much they had taken. So, both were released and faced only misdemeanor charges. The value stolen matters as much as the act. In the eyes of the law, the dollar amount determines whether you're facing a misdemeanor or a felony, which can mean the difference between walking free and going to jail.
