She told me that is my house, go inside and my mind is crazy and I saw see her like beautiful and I just got her. But I don't I don't open my clothes. Monroe, Ohio. A quiet, quaint neighborhood where nothing ever seems out of place. But in the early hours of February 26th at exactly 2:30 a.m., that calm was shattered. Police rushed to the scene after a frantic 911 call pierced the silence of the night. The reason? Something no one in Monroe was prepared for. Over there. Straight ahead. STRAIGHT AHEAD WITH THE LIGHT ON, RIGHT THERE. DOWN HERE. WHERE YOU AT? I'M RIGHT HERE. BACK UP. BACK UP. THIS GUY RIGHT HERE? YEAH. DOWN ON THE GROUND, ON THE GROUND. HE HAS A GUN. I have a gun problem. Get him out. A young woman reported waking to every homeowner's nightmare, an intruder inside her bedroom attempting to force himself on her as she slept. Would you speak to us? Okay. Why are you in here? My daddy sent me over, do you understand what I mean, you know? The judge, the judge and son sent me here. I don't understand that. They sent me over here. Speak English. Yeah, I speak English, brother. Who sent you over here? Son, do you understand mother sent me over here? My daddy do you understand mother? All right. [snorts] Let's go. That way? Yeah. The intruder was soon identified as 32-year-old Achyut Demalla. Turns out, a single oversight nearly changed everything. The basement door was left unlocked. Demalla seized the chance, slipping inside unnoticed, turning a quiet home into the stage for a nightmare. However, the family acted immediately and locked [music] him up in the basement. Monroe Police Department. Who's calling with weird. Yes. What's going on? Um there's some guy that's broken TO MY HOUSE. OW! YOU said he just broke into your house? Yes. He's down. Broke into the residence and is being detained by one of the residents of the house. >> hurry. Yes, he's Got some guy got in property >> 8124, you clear on that? Yes, he's down there right now. Yeah, though I'm on the phone with the police right now. What Achyut had done that night was far more serious than he realized. Breaking into someone's house isn't taken lightly, especially in Ohio. As per state laws, unlawfully entering a home counts as burglary, a second-degree felony carrying up to 8 years in prison and steep fines. But when that break-in is paired with attempted force or unwanted contact, the charge escalates to a first-degree [music] felony punishable by up to 11 years. However, in this case, one question still lingered. What exactly was his motive? I don't know if I'm going to call the cops or not. Do you know what day it is? I don't know. Do you know what year it is? 2024. Okay. Where do you live at? I live in the the middle of the night. You know what I did, but there's nobody open the door. So, why are you here? The judge, you know the Do you understand mother? Give me that. Someone give me that. Someone give me that. Where did you go in the house at? The garage is open. The somebody tell me to go inside. That's why I go inside from the garage. Garage is open. They leave the garage open. They leave the garage open. Though Achyut seemed fully aware of his actions and even recalled every detail, his reasoning was disturbingly bizarre. I know. Then why are you in their house? Somebody sent me over there. Somebody tell me to go inside. That is my house. Somebody tell me. That's why I go over there. Who said that? George. Who? George. Do you understand George? I don't know who you're >> the good luck county court. I don't know who you're talking about. Are you on any medication or anything? Yeah, I'm in the back of inside my bag. Your bag in there? >> a Depakote Depakote tablet. Are you diagnosed with anything? I'm schizophrenic and I'm bipolar. Like schizophrenia? Schizophrenia. And bipolar? When's the last time you took your meds? I took last day it was today today morning. Yesterday morning? Today morning and yesterday morning. If Achut truly suffered from the disorders he claimed, it could exempt him from consequences. He could potentially get a verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity. Yet, officers remained skeptical. Was this genuine intoxication or calculated deception? What was your intention going in their house? Because they I touched their touched their their daughter. That's why I touched in their their house. You thought their daughter what? I touched her daughter and just touching her daughter like like just carry like like a girlfriend. That's why tension is going inside their house. Don't mind don't mind. I'm a mental disorder. Okay, I get you that you have a mental disorder, but I'm not understanding why you went in their house. Something about a daughter? No. I just >> try to explain a little better to me why you were in their house? Why I'm inside in the house? Yeah, this isn't your house. That house Do you understand what they're sending you over there? That is my house. Go inside over there. It's truly unsettling how calmly Achut had admitted to what he'd done. Yet, the officer remained unconvinced. Entertaining his erratic reasoning any further seemed pointless. With the conversation going nowhere, Achut was escorted to the station where another round of questioning awaited. You entered through the garage, correct? >> Yeah. Did you have to like crawl under? Yeah. >> garage door open? >> Garage door is open. Okay. How did you get into the house? Somebody sent me over there to tell me that is my house. Go inside where you go. Come from the underground. They said that's why I go. Do you understand what I am going to judge of the Buddha going to jail? You see what for the Buddha Buddha court? No, sir. I don't know the her real name. I don't know. My question is you went underneath the garage door and then then you opened the door to go into the house? Some They said they will tell me there that they said to open the like that. This is what being over there they open that door. Somebody told you to open the door? Yeah, somebody told me to open the door. After that I go inside. After that I saw that my Do you understand what I am saying? I don't found over there. That's why I tried to come. Do you know the people that live at that house? I saw uh saw him there and Do you understand live there before? And they said tell me to there go over there. Do you understand what I am trying to tell you? They told >> the people that lived there before? Do you understand what I am saying? I saw him there. I think he live or not I don't saw him there. You don't know who it was before? Now also they said Do you understand what I am trying to tell you? They told go over there and that's my house. They said tell me that. Who told you that? Do you understand what I am saying? The judge of the Buddha going to jail. Okay. Okay. With his guilt admitted, but his motive still unclear, Achut was transported to jail and booked for aggravated burglary, kidnapping, abduction, and gross sexual imposition. Turns out this wasn't Achut's first offense. To understand just how deep this went, we need to rewind to July 2021. Somebody called said you were looking in a car and stuff. What's going on with that? I just need to know what What was the name of the person in that car? This one like in bus ads at like That's just it. I just go to park over there at night time. Okay. That's just like Abraham Lincoln. Like this Like fingerprint this one kind. Yeah. I just Like this Freeze up. Freeze up. Like this. Where do you live at? I live in Monroe Terrace over there. Oh, okay. So, where are you walking to? I walk in the that village. To what? Village. I walk in the farm over there. Like animals are living like horse and the Okay. >> cow over there and like goat something like sheep I can go there. Okay. Do you have a I have a driver's license or an ID or anything? Police were called to an upscale neighborhood after reports of a man wandering, peering into parked cars, and muttering to himself. That man turned out to be Achyut, and unsurprisingly, his reasoning was just as fractured then as it was now. So, I'm going to be honest with you. This is a predominantly white town. >> you know So, you look suspicious. You're what? >> UN boss. UN HR boss. I'm the I'm the like I have a lot of those. Jago and the boss over there. You're the boss? >> Yeah. Of what? UN HR. Officer UN UN officer of the year and the head of the officer. UN UN Yeah. So, the United Nations? Yeah. I came here like me a baby like I grew up like a child. Like a child time. I teach every discipline school and I in the my country I go back also. Okay. My handwriting is like one line. Achyut had not one, not two, not even three, but at least 14 encounters with police in Butler County since 2021. But as luck may have it, a county judge eventually deemed him incompetent to stand trial after a doctor diagnosed him with schizoaffective disorder, bipolar type. Despite this ruling, his troubling behavior showed no signs of ending. So, let me tell you something. When you're looking in windows around car windows around here Listen to me. Okay. Listen to me, okay? And we're going to be done here. Listen to me. Listen to him. Are we going to listen to him right now? Listen to him. Just listen. I can't understand you. Just listen. Can you understand me? Listen. Stop. Stop. Hey. Hey. Listen to me. I just did. Hey. Knock it off. Along with being declared incompetent, Achilleut was ordered into treatment at Summit Behavioral Healthcare for competency restoration. Yet, looking at him now, it was clear that treatment never truly happened, and what followed would spiral from bad to far worse. WHAT WAS YOUR JAIL APPOINTMENT? DOWN. GET DOWN. ROLL OVER. ROLL OVER. Roll over. Give me your cuffs. Give me your >> [laughter] >> I thought I'd start to swing. I have to start swinging on you again. Sorry. Help. I know. Sorry. All right. I'm out. Sorry. Squad. [ __ ] Sorry. He's in cuffs. Yeah. We're good. Hey, dude. Is this just a skin? I think it's My heart is broken. Okay. From suddenly trying to lunge at an officer to begging not to be killed, Achut's behavior revealed just how fractured his state of mind was. The officer, hoping he'd finally calm down and comply, was met with the opposite. His words spiraled into even greater incoherence. Why you get so angry? Stop. Okay. I don't care. Shut up. I told him. All right. Squad's coming. What are you reaching for? I I Why are you putting your hand in there? >> Okay. I'll get it out. I'm just tired. Sorry. Squad. Nail's hanging in. I didn't do nothing. You would see. Put nail in there. They're going to beat you. Hey, you got to tell the truth. Like I don't Fire department. Your mother Your mother is my mother. Your mother. While a verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity typically results in court-ordered psychiatric treatment rather than prison, Achut did not walk free. He was booked for assault, obstructing official business, and resisting arrest. All right, you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can be used against you in court. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford one, one will be appointed to you for free before any questioning, if you wish. >> I got to talk to a lawyer first. Okay, so no talking? I don't know I need any any other I don't need I talked to that situation situation. Grandmother in my country. Both I stayed in family channel one one Dude, I'm being honest, I can't understand you at all, so I'm just going to quit talking to you. All right. >> [laughter] >> Yeah, well, if this dude would just be like, "All right, fine. I'll quit looking my cars." I'll see I was going to send him cuz we're busy. What Achut had done this time couldn't be brushed aside, and most would expect such an incident to force a change. Yet, just 2 months later, on September 3rd, 2021, officers were once again called to deal with him. Hi. Sorry. That's okay. There was this guy. He lives upstairs. Okay. And he was trying to like break in here like banging into the door. Sounded like he was like hitting something. Do you know what apartment he was in? I don't know exactly which one. I've seen him plenty of times though. I think he has like a mental issue. Okay. What's he look like? He's like a He's like this tall, but in the average Super skinny? >> Yeah. Okay. All right. And then he kept like staring in our peephole, and I like stood back like he was going to wait for me to come out. Okay. All right. A young woman living in the apartment directly below Achut had grown accustomed to his erratic behavior during previous encounters. But on this day, he crossed all boundaries, attempting to force his way into her apartment while she was home alone. You feeling okay today? You feeling okay? Yeah. Do you take meds for your head? Yeah. Okay. Did you take your medication today? >> Yeah. Okay. I just took it. Okay. >> Okay. We just want to make sure that you're okay. >> Yeah. Cuz if you're banging on a door Kind of fast? Like that. Fast. Your heart rate is Yeah, I go like fast. Yeah. Well, you're you're fine. You're not in any trouble. We're just trying to figure out um you know, what's what's going on and stuff. She's she's scared because she said someone was banging on her door. And that it's got her worried. Though Achiume now tried to appear innocent, reports painted a very different picture. It later surfaced that he had two prior sexual imposition charges dismissed. And in a separate instance, someone had even secured a protection order against him. Yet just 3 days later, Demall was arrested for allegedly violating it. The question remained, would he manage to deceive officers this time as well? Was he wearing a white shirt? I really don't know what color shirt he was wearing. I saw his face. And I know Was it shaved head? Was his head shaved? Yeah. Like in the front? Like a like a little blotch in the back. Okay. Um I'll come back down here and talk to you here in a minute, okay? >> [snorts] >> He suffers from some mental illness. >> Um and I think he thought his brother lived here. He knows his brother doesn't live here. He's talked to me and my boyfriend multiple times. Right. I it's it's a I don't think it goes by the day with him. Like it's all up here. Um that's not firing right. >> Right. Um So, let me go up there and talk to him. I'll come back down here and talk to you. But you said he's talked to you and your boyfriend multiple times. >> Right. Yeah, but so what am I supposed to do? Just live in here and just break into my apartment? All right. Was he trying to get into your apartment or was he Yeah, he was for sure trying to get in like banging his body against this door. Okay. So, he was like trying to force his way in? >> Yeah, and it sounded like he was trying to break these locks, which I don't know how he would do that. Right. Although the officer seemed more empathetic toward Achyut despite his questionable behavior, such leniency was misplaced because home invasion is no trivial matter. In the US alone, over 400,000 burglary arrests were recorded in 2024. Most offenders were men and alarmingly about 48% [music] involved attempts to assault the women inside. Do you know the young lady that lives downstairs? We definitely But you were banging on the door, do you know her? Yeah. How do you know her? She's not in my parents, I think in the past tense. Yeah, my parents. They're your parents? >> Yeah. They're the ones right? No, downstairs. The one that the door you were >> that are downstairs, right? Uh-huh. I just met them in the past tense. I think they are not parents in the future tense. Not future tense, past tense. Past tense? Yeah, your parents are in the past tense? Yeah. In the ancient time? In the ancient time? Yeah. Okay. There was yet another incident in 2021 when Achyut allegedly threatened a store worker saying he'd blow her up over the price of a cigar. He was issued a trespass citation afterward when he went on to violate not once but three separate times. Clearly continued leniency toward him posed a serious risk. Do you Do you sometimes um see things or think of things that maybe aren't maybe aren't real? Yeah, sometimes in my in [snorts] my mind. In your mind it just goes away? Okay. Well, we're going to try to get you some help, okay? Cuz today what you did is it was not really correct, okay? And I know you didn't mean anything bad. >> [snorts] >> Okay? But we're going to try to get something to make it so that your brain, your head stays here and not up here, okay? So, we're going to try. Okay? You'll show up for the disorderly conduct. It's a minor misdemeanor. It just states that you went down and banging on her door and tried to open it cuz you thought you were talking to someone else's door, but you still scared her, okay? And I'm going to tell the courts that we want to get you some help for up here in your head, okay? Seem fair? Okay. So, I need your signature so I can give you a copy. Achut was issued a summons for disorderly conduct and released, but this was only the beginning. His pattern of seeking out women and attempting to force himself on them couldn't be explained away by mental illness alone. It hinted at something far more disturbing, and yet each [music] time he managed to slip past real accountability. The cycle was nowhere near over. Fast forward to March 2023, once again, Achut was pulled from his family's home in handcuffs. How you doing? Come in here. >> [snorts] >> Here, I'll help you. I'm going to explain to you what's going on here in a second, okay? You ready? Wrist. >> [laughter] >> How do you say Is it Achut? Yes. Achut? Achut, you speak good English? You guys speak English good. I'm going to make sure these aren't tightening up, okay? Huh? >> Can I wear boots? You have some shoes? >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Yeah, we'll how's your family getting along? Hey, listen. >> I I have a daughter. You have a son? Yeah. Okay. I'm going to read you your rights, okay? Okay. You have a cell phone What is it? Yeah. You have any weapons? Achut had entered the home of an acquaintance, a young woman in her 20s who was also a mother, lying in bed with her child beside her. At first, she wasn't alarmed, but things quickly turned disturbing. He allegedly began touching her hair, then tried slipping his hands under her shirt. It was clear Achut was spiraling completely out of control, and the fear in the girl's voice was evident. We just forgot to lock the door because he never goes up there. And then, um, he just randomly came up there, and we were just laying on the bed, and he just sat next to me, and like he just started touching my hair. I was like, "What the hell are you doing?" And then, like he just started messing with my hair, like he like put his hands on my face, and he just started messing with me, and I was like, "What the [ __ ] Was he above her clothing? >> He was like above. Okay. He was on top of my uh clothes, and then I was like, "What are you doing?" And he was like, "Oh, I was just messing with you." Like, "Oh, I was just joking." And then he just went downstairs, and like I kind of just freaked out cuz like Why? I had a little kid. Like I had no self-defense, but like I had a little kid right next to me. It's just inappropriate. Yeah, and he's hit um like he's put his I just didn't want to do anything cuz if I know he hit her, he's going to hit me if I do anything, and like there's a little >> don't know who he is. I know who he is because I know he has like criminal records. You know his name? Uh Achut Demall. What Achut had done this time was unforgivable and impossible to overlook. The officers had already placed him under arrest, and while he offered no resistance, he was far from defenseless. Armed with [music] excuses and rehearsed justifications, Achut slipped easily into his familiar performance of innocence. You know one thing I just touched her hair and just I just want to lay there. You touched Where did you touch her? I know this side, over here. On her side? >> Yeah, just to make this joking. Joking? >> Yeah. Okay, did you You said you touched her hair? >> Yeah. You touched her privates? >> No. You touched up here? >> No. You touched her anywhere through here? >> Did you touch her like right here, or did you touch her down here on her butt? >> over here. On her side? >> Yeah, on her side. Are you sure? >> Yeah. Yeah. Okay. She's saying that you touched her inappropriately, okay? >> Okay, well, that's why you're That's why you're under arrest right now, okay? >> All right, all right. No problem. While he hadn't, or perhaps couldn't carry out something more violent, his behavior was still inappropriate and amounted to assault. Once again, he was brought in for questioning, yet his calm demeanor was telling. Achut seemed almost unfazed, as if he already knew exactly how this would end. Do you have any medical problems? Um, mental. What is it? >> Psychodeficient. You're psychodeficient? >> Yeah, psychodeficient. What have you been diagnosed with? Psychotic. Mental. Right, but did they give you a diagnosis? >> Yeah, like psychotic. Psychiatric. Psychiatric? >> Yeah. Okay. Did they say you were um bipolar? Did they say you were um Like what did they diagnose you with? I understand mental, I understand psychotic. >> they said they said like bipolar also. And psychotic also they said like that. And then like I think the sleeping tablet at night. Okay, so you're bipolar? Yeah. Okay. Um Psychiatric? Yeah. Okay. Um Mental. Mental. All right. Those Those To me, though, all those things are the same. So, psychiatric, mental, they're all the same, but normally there's like a um There's a word that they say that's a part like bipolar. >> I think psychiatric. Psychiatric? >> Yeah, psychiatric. Right. Right, that's being bipolar and schizophrenic, or as he explained it, psychotic, once again worked more in Achiut's favor than against him, becoming a loophole rather than a restriction. Achiut was only served a summons and avoided jail because in each of these cases he had been deemed incompetent to stand trial. The question remains, was this truly justice, or should the system have taken stronger action to protect the community from his escalating behavior? What are your thoughts on this case? Don't forget to share in the comments, and if you're already gripped by this video, the next one is just for you. [music] >> [music]
