I'm not gonna leave you here uncuffed. We got to cuff you first. Okay. >> I mean, no. I I'd rather not get cuffed. I mean, how much longer if I'm getting cuffed? >> Well, that I'll hold to your ear. >> Another day, another NFL star in handcuffs. Former Ravens linebacker and two-time Super Bowl champ Terrell Suggs thought he was just grabbing Starbucks. Instead, he ended up with flashing lights in his rear view, a squad of Scottsdale's finest, and an out ofthe- blue arrest. >> Hello, Mr. Suggs. How are you? Hello. What did you say? What you call? >> Mr. Suggs. How are you? Yeah, I'm good, sir. >> Yeah. Do you have any weapons or anything inside that we need to know about, sir? >> Yes. >> I have a firearm right here. >> Okay. Where at? >> Right there. >> Okay. All right. Step out. >> Yeah. If you go and step out for me. >> What's going on? >> Appreciate that, sir. You going pretty fast down that road for me. You go and step to the back for me. You're going back. >> Mr. Subs, I'm not going to be here. We're contacting over an incident that occurred March March 10th at a Starbucks. You and some customers a little back and forth in the the drive-thru. That's later, though. It was all captured on on a dash cam. Okay. So, the reason we're contact is our violent crimes department or violent crimes unit investigated that and they stab him for probable cause. >> Probable cause for my arrest? >> Yes, sir. Yes, sir. >> For what? >> The whole incident was capturing my dad. >> So, what does what does that mean? Like, >> well, what that means right now is you're under arrest. >> The body cam kicks off with officers greeting him almost politely. Suggs, still trying to catch up to reality, responds like he just got recognized by a fan. But this wasn't an autograph request. The cops quickly let him know they've got probable cause for his arrest. All tied to a dust up at a Starbucks drive-thru. >> We're going to take it nice and easy. You've been really cool with us. >> If you want to contact your attorney, we give you the opportunity to >> Wow. >> I'm just letting I'm just I'm not going to BS you at all. I'm just trying to be completely >> So, what this orderly contact within? >> Yes, sir. >> All right. So So, um I actually just had a newborn baby. >> Okay. So, how do I who do I notify that I'm about to get arrested for >> who's at home as a bait? >> She's not She don't live. She lives. >> Okay. I just don't want to be a baiten by themselves. Okay. >> So, >> do you have a phone? Can you call it for me? >> Oh, I'll give you an opportunity to do it. >> So, what we're going to do is you'll be transported to our jail. Our detectives will speak with you and then we'll go from there. I'm just the supervisor for the apprehension unit. >> I don't know the case details, but like I said, I'm not going to blow smoke up your ass. I just want to be completely honest with you. >> Okay. >> Okay. So, I'm going to have one of our patrol officers transport you down to our jail so we can be in and out of here as soon as quick and attract as least attention as possible and just be done. >> And I can make bail and all of that or something. >> Yeah. So, we I don't set that. >> That's all determined to a judge. Like I said, I don't want to give you any bad info. So, that's that's the most >> dash cam. Yes, sir. >> Who is >> the the victim of the matter? Yes, sir. I don't know his name. Like I said, I'm giving a limited information. We're at the apprehension unit. We're just supposed to contact people and then we go from there and do our business. Okay. So, as long as you hang out with us, which I truly appreciate. Like I said, not trying to blow smoke or nothing. Just trying to be honest. >> So, what y'all like camped out and like waiting for me? >> Surveillance. Yeah, that that's standard for us. So, >> okay. Thank you, sir. I just got to I just got to make a call. >> Suggs looks confused and that's when it hits. This isn't traffic enforcement. This is an arrest squad. Then there's the phone call situation. Suggs, clearly worried about his newborn, asks if he can make a call before going downtown. The officers shut that down with procedure. He'll get his chance, but only after he's cuffed. >> This sucks. We're going to have you move over here. You're not out in public and everything like that. If you want to sit down. >> Okay, that's cool. It's just here in a second though when the cop gets on. >> Yeah, we understand that. We're going to turn the car off. All stuff. I'm going to grab out of there. Only what you want out of there. Your phone, wallet, things like that. >> Yeah, my phone and my wallet in there. >> Okay. You know where they're at? Are they in the dash? They're in there. >> They should be in the in the center console and my wallet. I think I left my wallet at home. >> Okay, that that's no big deal. I just don't want to leave here without it and and leave you alone without an ID in the car. So, that's the whole thing. Boss Day 902. >> Yep. >> All right. So, there's going to be a patrol unit fully marked coming back. Has more room than the little one that we have. So, we're going to try to get as much space as we can. >> Which uh jail am I going to? >> Scottsdale City Jail. >> All the way downtown. Like downtown SC? >> Yeah. 75th Street in India? Yes. And when you get in there, they'll do their normal processing. Detectives will come in and have whatever the conversation you want with them. You'll be given a chance to use your phone. Like I said, we'll do that here once I'm able to grab the phone. That way, you can call someone make sure your child's taken care of. That repetition feels like justification, but legally, it's selfinccrimination. It's exactly why defense attorneys tell clients to stay quiet. On the field, Suggs knew when to stop talking trash and line up for the next play. Here, he keeps talking himself deeper into trouble. This is a lot of vehicles for me. >> Yeah. Well, there was a weapon involved supposedly. So, like you said, we got told there's weapons involved on desk cam. So, weapons involved. We bring everybody. >> So, who are y'all? >> Uh, like I said, we're the violent crimes unit, the we're the apprehensive unit. So, we call they call us the special assignments unit. We do surveillance and look for violent criminals, things like that. People who present guns, people who like beat up their girlfriends and run away. >> You present guns. Yeah. Like I can have a gun. >> Yes. That's what I'm saying. But in >> Well, I didn't point at him. That's probably my wife calling right there. I'm not saying you point anybody, but there was a gun involved involved in the crime, so that's where we get called at. You'd be surprised, even if somebody has it on their hip, but they committed a crime, they'll call us. >> Say that again. >> Even if someone has it on the hip cuz they had a gun on them and they committed a crime, they'll call us. >> When weapons get mentioned, Scottsdale doesn't roll up with one cruiser. They bring the cavalry. Suggs insists he never pointed his weapon at anyone. Here's where Arizona law comes down hard. Under Arizona's disorderly conduct statute, just displaying or mentioning a firearm during a heated argument can cross into threatening or intimidation. And let's be real, Starbucks lines are tense enough without a linebacker telling you he's strapped. >> If you want, I can grab the phone. >> Please. Please. >> I'm not going to leave you here uncuffed. We got to cuff you first. Okay. >> I mean, no. I I'd rather not get cut. I mean, how much phone if I'm getting cut? >> Well, I'll hold it to your ear. I won't touch anything. I'll just hold it to your ear. We've done this before, many crimes, but when you get in the back of a vehicle that we're taking to. >> I know. I'm going to be cuffed in cuffed. So, I'm I'm giving you all the options. >> So, when can I make the call? Like, you say I could get it now, but you'll have to cuff me. >> Yeah. So, I'll cuff you. >> I mean, [ __ ] That's But then, cuz you thought it was the wife and I was going to let you just have conversations with her. >> So, if you want to wait to get down to the jail, that's fine, too. I just if my boss comes back and he's okay with it, I'll do that. I just got We can't We got to leave two on you. kind of policy things everybody's recording now. >> A man who spent years brutalizing quarterbacks is suddenly worried about handcuffs pinching his wrists. Still, the officers aren't budging. They've got a policy to follow and they know the cameras are rolling. >> Just the phone. You think >> there's two phones in there? >> You don't think your wallet's in there at all? >> I think I left it in the cup. >> Okay. >> To be totally honest with you, my cup. I mean, it's two of y'all. You want to grab it? >> Yeah, that's what I was talking about. Yeah. You good? >> Yep. >> In the cup. in the cup. These are no wallets in the cup or anything like that. >> Yeah, I left it in my my cup. >> Sir, did you not want your wallet? >> Yeah, I left it in uh at the house, actually. >> Uh I'm going to go to jail. >> Yeah. >> But at the Starbucks [ __ ] I don't know how long when I got into it with the white guy. Nothing. We got out. We exchanged words and I was pulling off and [ __ ] I didn't want them to follow me. So, I just let them know I had my pistol on me as I was leaving. And I guess that they saying misdemeanor with a firearm. So, I don't know what they what you what y'all say was >> threatening with a firearm. >> Oh, they now they say threatening with a firearm. I I didn't point it at him or nothing. So, >> I don't know. Uh I'll let you know when I get down there. I know. But don't trip though. I mean, [ __ ] All this unfolds while Suggs is on the phone with his girlfriend or wife trying to keep his cool. He's split in two. Father and partner on one end of the call, suspect under arrest on the other. The duality is striking. To his family, he wants to sound calm. To the police, he's accidentally building their case. It's the definition of playing defense on two fields at once and losing both. >> I'm trying to call him now, but um yeah, he going to have to come cuz my car out here and the windows down. So, he's probably going to have to come and get it. >> Sounds like somebody's attached to it. >> Yeah, I'm I'm going to go to jail, my [ __ ] I swear to God. So, my um my car going to be on Pinnacle Peak. Basically, right, you know, like right before Walgreens and all that. Pinnacle Peak and >> 91st >> and 91st and 91st Street. Can y'all uh Oh, I need two on me. So, >> we'll hang out here in >> I just need somebody to run the car up. No, he's far. He's far away. He's um I got into it with I think he was a Trump supporter and um like yeah dad wasn't even there yet. So it was like a month ago or whatever and we we exchanged words and then I was going to pull off. He was like reaching for something. I let him know I had my [ __ ] too. You know what I'm saying? And I drove off so he wouldn't call me I guess cuz he called. You just probably need to come get my car and take it back to the house. Uh they fa to take me to um >> 75th Street in Indian School. >> Basically the jail down there. I'll let you when I get down there. I'll let you know how long I'm going be in there for. >> My guess is you want to get through this as quickly as possible cuz like I said, you have the option. I don't know. Like my boss said, we are not sure. The detective going to come down explain it more to you. But he's here now. If you're ready to go, don't know about the car. >> Uh I've got the keys in there. I can cut it off if you want and roll the windows up. >> Yeah, please. >> Roll up the window. >> Give me one. >> Yeah, we need one. I got >> You got all >> them? No, they not let me keys are in the cup. >> Firearm in there. >> Keys are in the cup. Firearms to the right of the driver's seat. >> I think he going to do it now. They got four cars in a unit out here on me. Nothing. They She said he said they doing event. They were like camping out. Like I like I noticed though when I came out was like, "Yo, it's a lot of mother cars down here." 10 minutes later he's like, "Oh yeah, uh you going pretty fast." I was like, "No." Cuz I looked down when he pulled me over. Speed limit is 40. I was doing like 47 to 48. like not nothing to get pulled over over it. But he wasn't they wasn't in typical Scottsdale uniform. I'm like, "Hold up, this some shit." He like, "You got fired on?" I'm like, "Yeah." He like, "All right, I like dog [ __ ] I step out." >> Hey, back window too. >> And he was like, "Yeah." >> Suggs even frames it as politics, calling the other guy a Trump supporter, as if that makes it clearer. But the law doesn't care about political labels. A jury won't care who said what first. What they'll care about is that Suggs admits to bringing a gun into the equation. Once a firearm is in play, prosecutors see it as a threat to public peace. Period. >> How do you turn it off? Is there a button? >> It's a a button on side on the on the side of the driver. Yeah. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> So, what the why you do call the cops on? >> He he must have like cuz I act as when he wouldn't back up and then he got out like he was going to do something to then I got out and you know up here they're not expecting my big ass to be in this car. You know what I'm saying? I think when he saw it was me, that's when he like started to backpedal. And like I said, I I don't know like I ain't going to play with these people, you know. We we ain't even had Dash yet. So that's how I know it was a month ago because Dash wasn't here. And I guess like I said, he must have called he was caught on dash cam. I think that's [ __ ] But >> you know what I'm saying? >> Well, we'll see. >> Yeah. >> Call me back. >> All right. Um, they going to I don't know what they going to do with my phones, but I'll call you once. >> It'll go with you down to the jail. >> Okay. >> All right. >> That's why I'm not there. >> Here we go. >> All right, bro. >> All right, sir. We're going to walk down here real quick. >> By now, Suggs is no longer in control, literally or legally. Cuffed, seated, and heading for a patrol car. He's polite, but clearly unsettled. So, the question for you is this. Was this the justice system doing its job or did a caffeine clash get overblown into a career staining prosecution? >> It's good right here, man. >> Go ahead. There you go. Cool. >> Thank you. And you too. Give him a little bit more room. Really cool with us. >> I appreciate that. Yes, >> sir. >> We got a short ride down to the station and >> ain't that short. The short one's right around the corner. >> That's just like a station now. >> We got like a 15-minute ride then. >> This is going to mess you up, Mr. Ch. I don't want to do that. Go ahead and flip this hand around the other way. There we go. You got your Avenger still in the way. There we go. >> Any of this stuff you would rather uh leave in your car or you want to take it all with you? >> Cuz when I I mean I got a I'll be able to get it back. Yeah. >> Yes. Yeah. Everything you bring, you can you can get it. >> No, we're good. >> Do you have uh like shorts underneath the the joggers? >> No. >> Like basketball shorts or anything that would have other pockets? >> No. >> Oh, these hanging on. >> They're prescription. Yeah, they're prescription. >> Suggs asks about what he can bring with him and whether his belongings will be returned. The officers reassure him, but it's the kind of reassurance you give when the outcome is already decided. It's another reminder that the criminal process is a machine. You don't stop it, you just move through it. >> Sometimes people will like sit in like push, there you go. Push yourself back a crack window or getting seat around. It's going to have to work. I want to get the seat belt inside. >> I'll get it for you. It's unlocked. >> All right. Pretty cool, too, right? Trying to keep things as low as you as possible. This next part, we're going to be serving a search war at your residence store for uh items and evidence of the alleged crime, clothing, things of that nature. Okay. It's not my call. I'm just we're just the dudes that come and arrest people, serve warrants. So, we want to maintain this uh relationship that we have with you and your your family at the house. >> So, a couple questions for you. Who's all at the residence? >> Nobody's there. >> Your wife's not there? >> No, she doesn't. >> No kids? >> No. >> Uh any dogs? >> No. >> No guests out there. So, there is zero people there. >> Nobody. Under Arizona statute, once a judge signs off, detectives can dig for anything tied to the alleged crime. Clothing, evidence, even scraps of proof. For a man used to controlling the line of scrimmage, this is the system blitzing him with no blockers. So, what happened is that Suggs was in front of the other customer and backed into his vehicle. Well, the other driver, you can see, gets out and so does Suggs. They're looking at, you know, if there's any potential damage. They argue before continuing along in the drive-thru. And then later on, Suggs gets his drink. He yells back to the driver, flips him off, and flashes that handgun before pulling off. The driver calls 911 following all of this. Suggs was arrested a few weeks later. In police body camera footage now from that arrest, Suggs is heard explaining what happened. Following his arrest, Terrell Suggs was charged under Arizona law with two counts. Driving under the influence DUI under Arizona Revised Statutes and resisting arrest under Arizona Revised Statutes. The DUI statute prohibits operating a motor vehicle while impaired to the slightest degree. While the resisting statute covers intentionally preventing or attempting to prevent a peace officer from making a lawful arrest, a first offense DUI in Arizona is typically a class one misdemeanor punishable by a minimum of 10 days in jail. Finds exceeding $1,200, license suspension, and mandatory alcohol education classes. Resisting arrest is a class 6 felony carrying up to 18 months in prison. Though probation and fines are also possible depending on the facts and criminal history. Arizona didn't blink and neither did the cameras. Now I want your take. Was this accountability or overkill?
