That's not that kind of stuff. It's not your ex-boys. Okay, that's [ __ ] >> This is Joel Aringa Sains who just a few hours ago reportedly stabbed an innocent man 84 times and then engaged in deeply disturbing behavior involving the victim afterward. >> Those body laying on the floor and then I think his head was on the side of him. >> No, his head was completely off. >> When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered it was far more unsettling than the caller had described. Yeah, just right there in the pool of love. And then there's a large pool of love there. >> It's going to be a bigger scene than what we're thinking. >> The little spots are first impact. >> Just a guy getting his head chopped off with a 2in knife. You can't even though it could be all kind of >> On the 21st of June 2021, the Los Cusus Police Department received a call from Apadaka Park in Los Cusus, New Mexico. A call that left even the most experienced officers deeply disturbed. >> So I was just driving right and then I pulled on the >> and I seen those was a body laying on the floor and then I think his head was on the side of me. >> Okay. Said Applea fire going in water. I was pulling in cuz I was going to go hang out at the park and then I I seen something on the floor and I thought it was a trap and kill him and then on and then and yeah and then once the light like once I the light touched like the body I seen the body I seen his face. >> Okay. Could you tell people like um no his head was completely off his body? >> What do you mean? >> Like he was >> okay. And what was he wearing? Uh, I don't know. I want to say a white shirt in that breather had blood on >> maybe. >> And how long ago did it? >> Uh, I I seen this like 5 minutes ago. 5 10 minutes ago. >> Okay. >> And then and then on and so then I seen it and I got I got you know and I was I sped off. >> Okay. And you for a fact so you said you circled back to double check and is completely off of his body. >> No, I didn't circle back. I just I just tried getting out of the area to be honest with me. >> Well, that's okay. Do you have any did you see anything else? Anything else suspicious around the area? >> No, I see nothing. There was nobody at the park. I just pulled in and then I just seen I just seen his head off of his body like capitated. He was just laying. I got I got scared, you know. >> Considering the severity of the situation, multiple officers rushed to the scene. What they found was nothing short of horrifying. for everybody to stand and then let's go up with the Dustin and let's go take a body uh body first take a line and uh normal go right behind >> stay right here for now. >> So the scene is right there right there. You see all the blood? >> What up? The victim's remains were found in a disturbing condition with key parts located some distance apart. At first glance, it seemed like an accident, but the surrounding circumstances and a closer look told a different story. >> A little spots are >> maybe >> first impact and then roll. >> Look at the cut. It's clean. You can have cuts and skirts. You know what I'm talking about? Come around this way. Just which way? This way. Side down, brother. >> You can't take that same path. They know we don't have. >> It looks like there's a roll right there. >> That roll. >> Yeah, cuz there's or >> Yeah, that's one thing we probably need to do is look at his shoes. On the top of his shoes, too. sitting. >> We're going to need all this. We're going to need all this building. >> Yeah. >> Lose our weight. They've been bitching to Chief that this guy was >> What's the tattoo say on the top? >> They got Mickey. I can't really make it out. >> It's a scorpion. Maybe an IK or an IK like a duck to looks like me and Miranda were looking at like possibly right here. Is there something shiny? >> Yeah, like he spit on him. >> Like maybe he spit on him. >> Yeah, >> that's right there in there. >> That's what it kind of looks like. I mean, I could be wrong. >> Cut off his finger, too. >> So, we're missing a finger. >> Is it freshly cut off? >> Yeah. Okay. >> So, we're missing uh the middle finger on the right hand l So, we may find it over here. >> And then there's multiple wounds on the back. >> Yeah, >> that being slices. >> What is this? The middle one. >> Right here. rock might fall back down. >> I I don't know, dude. I I that I don't know. Um we can make sure that we do, but we have a a few process. >> Yeah, it's going to be a bigger scene and we're thinking that's that's their camp or what we believe to be their stuff or one of their stuff. Sorry. And I obviously with his head uh what you say >> 10 yard 10 yards from his torso before we begin. >> There were no signs of a crash, no tire marks, no shattered glass, no damaged curb. Clearly it was not an accident. The victim had visible injuries on his torso and one of his fingers appeared to be missing. Officers also noticed marks on the ground suggesting the body had been moved from another location. They followed these drag marks to the actual execution site where the suspect had decapitated the victim and then dragged the hymn to the road. >> Yeah, right there in the pool of blood and there's a large pool of there. >> Yeah, this is going to be our [ __ ] did he get over there? drug him. >> That's why there's uh on the curb and you see >> I can see on the I can see it right there. >> So there's your drag mark there. >> But what officers didn't know yet was that something even more disturbing was waiting for them. Not at the scene, but in the interrogation room. >> He dragged the body and probably threw the head because the where they cut the off is like here and then the body's over there and the head's even a little farther. [ __ ] Dude, that was that'sed up, dude. Okay. So, like the say this is the tree that the we found the pole blonde. The body's like like right here and then the head's like right there. No, no, no. Like like the chop spots here. >> The body is like in the middle of the road with the head part wherever like a a neck and then the head's over here somewhere. >> I don't know if he was like cut him off, toss the head, and then drag the body. >> The victim was identified as 55-year-old James Garcia. The condition he was found in suggested this wasn't just a random act of violence. It felt like a personal grudge, as if someone close to him was involved. But who could it be? Based on this theory, police checked his close contacts, friends, girlfriend, wife. He was homeless. Nothing surfaced that could lead to a suspect. At a time when officers felt they had hit a dead end, others searching the nearby area found a mysterious man sitting under a tree in the dark. What made them suspicious was that the man appeared to have bloods, stains on his clothing, bags, and an object resembling a knife. >> Put your hands up. Stand up. 809. >> 87. Everyone 103 right now. Come over here. Put your hands up. Put your hands up. Get on your knees. Put your hands where I can see them. Stay right there. Okay. 809 87. 89387. Stay where you are. Keep your hands up. Okay. >> Keep your hands where I can see them. Don't move. >> Contact. You got cover. You got contact. >> Hands covered in blood. >> Uhhuh. >> And there's a knife stick in the ground. Covered in blood. >> Wow. So like some al-Qaeda [ __ ] >> It's a welfare check for a male laying on the ground decapitated. And there's a knife sticking in the ground. Cover it in blood. Like a steak knife. Filelet knife. >> What? A steak knife? >> Like a thin fillet? Fish fillet knife. >> It could be all kind of just a guy getting his head chopped off with a 2-in knife. You can't even walk. >> 50 ft south of >> This discovery raised immediate red flags. The man identified as Joel Arinega Signs was quickly detained and brought into the interrogation room for questioning. >> Joel. Joel. So, I'm just trying to find out more information about James. So, was he your boyfriend? Were you guys dating each other? >> Okay. Were you guys in some kind of lover's quarrel? >> No. >> Like because he's your boyfriend. You guys got in an argument? That's >> just what I'm getting. [Music] >> You tell me, man. Why would you call me? >> I'm not calling you gay. I'm not judging you. I'm married. >> You're married? >> Yeah. >> Who you married to? >> You married to James? >> Are you gay? >> Are you married to James? >> Are you trying to insult me? >> Huh? >> Are you insulting? >> No, I'm not insulting you. We're not calling you information. >> Why are you calling me gay? >> We're not calling you gay. We're just >> I didn't call you gay. >> I said, "Are you married to James?" No. >> Joel initially denied any connection to James, but he didn't know yet that there was strong, undeniable evidence tying him to the crime scene. >> So, is that why you attacked James tonight? >> Because he called you gay. >> Is it because James is gay? >> I'm asking you. Are you getting >> I'm not lying about anything. >> You're telling me I don't know what to think. >> You act like a child. >> I'm not acting like a child. >> Yes. >> Okay. >> Oh, [ __ ] >> So then tell me about James. >> Tell me about James. >> Is that why you're pissed off? Because James thought you were gay? No. >> Did James hit on you? >> No. >> Did he make some kind of advance towards you that you didn't like? >> No. >> Told you I was gay. Is that why they keep? >> No. That could tell you. >> Yeah. >> I'll call you. >> Okay. Well, I mean, if that's what you feel like you want to do. >> I'm not calling you gay. I'm asking you. >> You literally just killed me. >> I did not. told me that you >> I asked if James was your husband. >> I asked you if that was your husband. >> Yeah, I told you that's not the same thing. Why did you ask me? >> So, if it's because you guys had a lover's quirrel or he made some kind of unwanted advance. >> I guess. >> You guess? >> No. >> So, he did? >> He's so angry. >> Do I? >> Yeah, you do. >> Well, I help you out. >> You want to fight me? >> I don't want to fight you. Oh my god. >> I don't want to fight you. >> Don't call me again. >> Not call me again. >> Beat the [ __ ] up. >> I'll beat this [ __ ] >> Okay. Someone tell me what it was. >> No. Apologize. >> Okay. I apologize. >> So, well, you came in here lying. Trying to see. I'm >> not lying. I'm trying to figure out your relationship. Help us out, James. Certify it for us. [Music] You can do it yourself. >> I know that's what I'm doing. I'm asking you questions. >> I'm not doing anything. [Music] >> I'm not trying to come to >> You're acting, >> am I? >> Okay. So, what will happen tonight? Okay. So, here's what I think happened. You and James are in a relationship. He said something to you and you killed him. >> Where did you go? >> Baker. >> Who's Baker? Why that came? >> Yeah. Is that what happened? >> It's okay. Okay. >> All right. >> Okay. Does your wife know where you at right now? >> No. >> Does she know that you're sleeping in the park with another guy? No. >> You told me earlier you're sleeping in the park. You and James are the only ones in the park. >> I didn't do that. >> That's exactly what you told me. >> It's on the camera. Well, then help us understand what was going on. You're investigating, aren't you? That's That's exactly what we're trying to do. >> Did you kill James because he was gay? You didn't like that? >> No, I don't know. >> You don't know why you killed him? >> I don't know. >> He repeatedly ignoring the detective's questions, but the investigator knew exactly how to get through to him. They presented him with solid evidence that directly linked him to the crime. You remember when we took a swab with your hands and you rub those Q-tips on your hands? Remember that? We're going to send that off to We're going to send that off the lab and it's going to come back. >> You never seen that guy on your hand. >> You don't know like it's all said to each other, right? That's how it happened. Yep. >> According to reports, dried blood was found on Joel's hands, clothes, and shoes. And after testing, it was confirmed to be victim's blood, Joel's footprints were found near victim's remains. This was solid evidence that could land him behind bars. But detectives still needed to know why. Was it self-defense or something else? While Joel knew that detectives had found his secrets, so he made another plan to find his way out. Look, >> Joel, we know what you did. We just want to know why you did it. My name is Joel. It is Joel. >> What do you want to be called then? >> Alire. >> I'm sorry. >> I gave it to the [ __ ] >> Alire. A L T A I R. >> That's okay. >> He had a gun. He had >> What kind of gun was it? >> Like a little 22. >> Did you see what color it was? It's like black for brown. said, "Take that from me." And he tried to pull it on me and I took it away. And then he pulled out a knife. I don't like guns. I don't carry gun. I can fight. I just wanted to drag his body down. >> How many cars passed by you? about 14 pass. >> Really? >> Yeah. >> What time did this all happen at? 4:59. >> Was it dark outside or was it light outside? >> Black. >> Pitch black. >> Where's that gun at now? >> I don't know. >> You just left it there? >> Yeah, I just I don't know how you guys were coming. He claimed he acted in self-defense, insisting that James attacked him while armed with both a gun and a knife. But something didn't add up. There was no gun found at the scene, which immediately raised doubts among detectives. So they kept digging, determined to uncover the real motive behind his actions. >> So why did you die? My wife >> your wife. When did this happen? >> Four years ago. Four years ago. Yeah. Okay. Was that reported? >> No, we were all homeless. >> What's that? >> We were all homeless. >> You guys are all homeless. >> Homeless. >> Homeless. Because you had your bags. What knife did you use? >> I don't know. My hand in his pocket. >> He had it. Yeah, I pulled off. >> You pulled off with him? >> Yeah, he tried to I just want to play back. >> Can you give us her name? So she's >> I don't know. So we can talk try to find her. >> I appreciate that. I appreciate you being honest with us. Can I get a cigarette? You want a cigarette? for your >> Later, Joel revealed another crucial detail about his motive. He claimed that James had raped his wife in the same park and had now stolen both his and his wife's belongings, which led to the deadly encounter. >> Did you use the same knife that you stabbed him with to cut his head off? >> What? The knife that you stabbed him with, is that the same knife you used to cut his head off? >> Yeah. Yeah, like a switch blade or something. >> And that's what you used? >> Yeah. How's it happen? No. How is it? Have you ever had a replacement? >> With this confession, the murder was no longer a mystery, but Joel's behavior suggested he might have been under the influence of drugs, which could affect the legal consequences he would face. The court later recommended a mental health evaluation in 2021 as his competency to stand trial was questioned. nearly 4 years. In 2025, he was officially charged with first-degree murder. [Music]
