[laughter] >> Please, y'all. Please. Please. Please, just call his name. Just call his name. >> Is she okay? >> Unfortunately, YOUR DAUGHTER'S DECEASED. >> WHAT? >> [screaming] >> EVERY DAY OUT ON THE STREETS, COPS deal with tons of violence, hatred, and heinous crimes. They spend their nights pursuing bad guys and even risk their lives on a daily basis to protect others. But then, they face their greatest challenge when cops have to give parents [music] the worst news of their lives. >> And because there are no signs of life for 20 minutes, um Andrea has passed away today. >> On March 3rd, 2025, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, police responded to a disturbing report of an infant [music] in trouble. The officers were dispatched to the address. Upon arrival, they heard shocking news from the paramedics. >> I assume the baby's probably not going to make it. Family's pretty hysterical. We do have some Spanish and English speaking. Um the lady in the yellow, I think it's her grandma. She's going to lose it. Um I mean, they're probably all right. Um doesn't seem like anything foul play, but baby's been a little sick with some respiratory stuff. Sounds like they were taking a nap. Baby was napping and then just wasn't So, what's Yeah, that's it. >> Any family inside? >> No, I had to kick them all out. >> Like two, three, four people? >> Um we're not there yet. About five. >> [clears throat] >> After hearing the chilling information, the officers went upstairs. There they found the relatives of the 7-month-old infant. Among them was his deeply concerned mother, Edith Estrada Segala. >> He had walking pneumonia at the beginning of the year. Okay. Today he woke up with a stuffy He's been stuffy all weekend. He's been stuffy for the past week. >> Uh-huh. >> I took him a bath today. >> Okay. >> Thinking it would help. >> Okay. >> I passed out. I did. I'm sorry. I don't know. I He's been up all night just with the stuffy. Doing nothing. >> You passed out after giving him a bath? >> No, [laughter] the water was running. >> They're They're still working on him. What's baby's name? >> Adrian. >> Adrian? >> Adrian. >> Adrian. >> Adrian. >> Okay. And his uh last name? >> Estrada. >> Estrada. And um his date of birth? >> Uh it's um July >> 6th. >> Uh-huh. >> 2000 uh 2014. >> 2014. >> 2014. >> Okay. Okay. Do you have any other kids? >> I just want to see >> Okay. >> We have you guys come down here. We're going to be with you in the lobby downstairs. >> It seems like 5 seconds. >> No, this is a lot. >> What does a parent have to do? >> Excuse me. >> I have my husband in the back. >> This is your younger son? >> Oh. Oh, no. I was just like Oh my god. >> No, he's really loud. I got a first name. No, he's really loud. >> They're still trying to revive him, right? >> Yeah, they're still working on Yeah. >> Edith explained she had stayed home instead of going to work to take care of her son Adriel. She had been giving him a bath to cool him down when she apparently lost focus. She was devastated, blaming herself for being too tired. >> [laughter] >> There was several agonizing minutes of waiting for the entire family. They prayed and clung to the slim chance that Adriel might come back to life. Eventually, the update from the paramedics arrived. >> Are you ready to listen to me, please? I know I'm not making this up. Give us a So, my buddy just told me that inside the fireman have stopped doing CPR. They talked to the doctor on the phone and because there are no signs of life for 20 minutes, uh Adriel has has to wait today. >> [screaming] [screaming] [snorts] [screaming] >> After Edith was taken away, the officers entered the residence [music] and looked around. They noticed that the bathtub was wet. A little later at the police station, [music] investigators spoke with Edith about what might have happened aside from the pneumonia the infant allegedly had. >> I was just kind of cleaning up, doing some laundry. And he was just there watching cartoons. But he does have a diaper rash, which we've been trying to control for daycare. So, that's why I started the bath that way he could breathe as well cuz he was choking up. And I started the bath. >> [laughter] >> I closed the door that way he could get the steam in here. Or his head. I got him undressed. He was wearing some blue pants. He was wearing a long sleeve shirt. He was dressed well. And and >> [clears throat] >> I undressed him. And I put his toys in the tub. So, I put him in there because I was still doing laundry in the other room. >> The distraught mother continued her account. She admitted that she had no idea how it had happened, but a little later she had simply fallen asleep. She was awakened by her mother who was banging on the door. >> So, when I opened the door I was just kind of half asleep. I opened the door. It was my mom. So, then she asked me about Adrian. And I went back inside the room and I was still half asleep. I I I I I I couldn't put two two and two together because I didn't see him in his bassinet. So, then right away, I rushed to the bathtub. And that's when [clears throat] I found him. >> However, there was another circumstance surrounding the incident that Edith had not mentioned up to that point. The officers had come across it while searching her apartment. While being respectful of her suffering, they decided to ask about it. >> So, one thing I did notice um when we were going through there, there was a pretty a pretty There was a lot of empty alcohol containers. >> Mhm. >> So, you're the only adult that lives there, right? So, is it safe to say that you're the one that's consuming that? >> Um I was consuming that. I did have a couple friends over. >> Okay. >> and then honestly, I would leave the house and go to my boyfriend's house and like, you know, not drinking, but like it was here and there. I haven't I've been home here and there, but it's been inconsistent, honestly, and I haven't had friends over. >> Any sort of drinking today? >> I did have a shot. >> Okay. >> While I was doing laundry. >> Okay. Okay. Um shot of what? >> Um it was Pink Whitney. >> Okay. What is that? >> Um >> I mean, I saw the bottles, I I just don't know what >> Okay. Is that like what you normally like to drink? >> Um it just depends, honestly. >> Okay. And so, you had a shot, like a one of the little ones, or Um And was this When was this? Like Was this while after I was in the bath? Was this when he was sleeping? >> sleeping. Yeah. >> Edith claimed that she had only had one drink, but the investigator wasn't going to buy her statement. He had good reason to believe that she had consumed much more. Soon, he explained why. >> I didn't smell brand new Southeast Substation air. What I smelled was smelled like alcohol. Right? >> In my room? >> In this room. >> Oh, okay. >> In this Right? That's because you've been sitting in here for a few hour or I don't say a few hours, maybe an hour or so, right? Um That doesn't happen from one shot. I'm just being honest with you. And I'm not, you know, I I hate I don't want to call you a liar. You know, I think this has been a very traumatic day and and people have a a tendency sometimes to kind of I think you're being truthful. I still think we're being completely truthful. And people have a tendency to pad stuff when they're uh upset with themselves, when they're embarrassed maybe, when they feel like crap to be honest with you. You know, I I don't think um I don't think it's necessarily abnormal, but given the circumstance and and my experience not only just in my job, but in life, um I I I know that we're not being truthful about how much we drank today, right? >> She insisted that she had only had one drink that day to deal with her hangover from drinking the previous evening when she had been visiting her boyfriend. At that point, the investigator interrupted her because he found something highly questionable in her version of events. >> You drive from his house to your house with your kiddos, take your son to school, go back home, have one shot to take the edge off, right? Take that hangover away. Here's my concern. So, we have a number of things going on here then by your own admission. Because if I'm still smelling a little bit of alcohol on you, that means either you were insanely drunk this morning driving your kids around or you drank when you were at home because nobody, I'm telling you right now, you have you're I've been in this game way too long. All right? I I I you're you're you can't >> Yeah, I know I I drank yesterday. I did. >> okay. So, in order for you to still have a a smell of alcohol on you like that, you would have had to been insanely drunk this morning still for it to still be on you right now. Or or you drank more than you're saying while you were at home. Let's cut this. >> I have a pretty high tolerance. I do. And yesterday we did drink um whiskey. I did. And I you know, I didn't brush my teeth this morning. And >> Yeah. >> I get it. You know, I get it. >> After the interrogation, Edith was arrested. She was eventually charged with one count of all the resulting in death. On February 7th, 2025 in Bryan, Texas at approximately 12:40 a.m., a man named Brandon Dickerson called 911 and made a totally chilling statement. >> 911, what's the address of the emergency? >> I just killed my wife. >> Okay, sir. What's your name? >> Brandon Dickerson. >> Is that Dickerson with a B? >> D D I C K E R S O N. >> Can you tell me a little bit about what happened? >> Uh she was cheating. >> Okay. Did you catch her cheating or did she tell you she was cheating? >> Uh I'll say I caught her cheating. >> Okay. What's your >> Um can I can I add someone to my car? I need someone to take my child. >> How many children do you have at the location? >> Just one. He's 8 years old. >> Okay. Okay, and what's your wife's name? >> My last name, my wife? >> What's your wife's name? >> Oh, Alexis Walls. >> And how do you spell her last name? >> W A L L S >> Okay. Is she still breathing? >> Oh, no. She's shot like 15 times. >> Okay, do you have the gun on you at the moment? >> I currently do not. It is disassembled outside. >> Where outside is it? >> It's going to be on my front porch. >> On your front porch? >> Yeah. >> Okay, what kind of gun is it? >> It's a Ruger Security-9. >> A Ruger Security-9? So, she's dead? >> Yeah. >> Okay, and where is your wife at? >> Uh, she's in the middle of the hallway. >> Which hallway? >> No, in the hallway of my house. >> In the hallway? Okay, when did you when did you shoot her? >> Just now. >> How long ago was that? >> Uh, how long has this phone call been? I feel like I can't take this I can't take it apart. But, it is outside. It's going to be laying on the trunk of my car. >> Okay, it's Okay, you just said it was on the front porch taken apart, and now it's >> I I was in the process of trying to take it apart. >> Brandon was honest with the police and didn't try to lie, run, or hide. He also waited for the officers to arrive. When they got to his address on East 18th Street, they found him lying on the ground and talking to his brother on the phone. >> Get my son. Call Dario. Get my son. For real? swear to God. >> Brandon I swear to god. I told you. I I swear to god. >> Why would you >> I can't. >> Is anybody else in the house? >> Yes, my son. My brother's getting him I only relinquish custody to my to my brother. >> Is that who's on the phone? Is that who's on the phone right now? >> Why would you do this, Brandon? You knew you were going to kill her. >> I know. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I love you. The you're on speaker. >> Let's get him off the road. >> I only relinquish custody to Nathan Aaron Claybo. >> Roll over on your butt. >> I only relinquish I only relinquish custody. Yes, ma'am. >> In the hallway. >> He's in the hallway. My son is asleep in the bed. >> Hey, Officer Lee, where are you going? >> I I don't know, sir. >> Have him in Put him in the the car right there. >> Soon, the officers determined that the victim, Alexis Walls, was lying dead in the house, [music] having been shot 15 times by Brandon. But even more horrifying was the fact that their 18-month-old son had been in the house during the murder. Fortunately, he was safe. >> It's okay. It's okay. >> Um Do we have someone coming to get the kid? I know he said I know he said brother was coming. >> Hey, buddy. It's okay. It's okay. >> Court, where's your car at? 5Z dispatch, they're not going to be any good. Brandon, where's your car at? >> Down on the street over there. >> All right. Let's walk kid away. >> Yep. >> The toddler was safe, but within minutes he became the unfortunate child of a murdered mother and a father headed to prison. The reality of what had happened, however, hadn't fully set in yet. That changed when the victim's family arrived at the scene and had to hear the unbearable news. >> Where's my daughter? Where's my daughter? >> She's inside. Listen to me. Listen. >> Where's Where's >> What What What is your daughter's >> Where's my baby? >> What's your daughter's name? >> Alexus. >> Alexus, okay. Come here. >> No, no, no. Where's my daughter? >> She's inside. We can't let you go in there right now. >> Wait a second. That boy did not hurt my daughter. >> You do not want to go in there right now. >> Did Did he shoot my daughter? >> Sir. >> Tell me. Did he shoot my daughter? >> We are working through an investigation right now. >> Sir, if my daughter been shot, you can say yes or no. That's all I want to know. >> We're working through an investigation right now, okay? >> Oh, my heart, y'all. >> My daughter been shot. >> Is he Is he in there? >> He is not in there. >> Where is he? Where is he? >> currently in our custody right now. >> Oh, my heart, Brandon. >> Little What? >> Will you switch places with us, please? >> Where is he? >> Y'all got paper around this house my daughter. Is my daughter dead? >> What car is he in? >> You are not going over there. >> Little What? Little Y'all got paper around this house my daughter. Is my daughter dead? Man, tell me yes or no, please. I can sympathize. My daughter is dead. >> What car is he in? >> Oh, Lord Jesus. Jesus. >> [crying] >> Jesus. Jesus. No. No. >> You got to let us do our job. >> The officers did everything they could to ease the family's pain, but no words could be enough. Alexis's parents were understandably devastated. [music] They were experiencing both overwhelming grief and extreme anger toward the man who had killed their daughter. Meanwhile, Brandon was taken in for questioning. He was surprisingly cooperative and calm for a man who had just brutally beat his wife to death. He had a lot to tell the officers about himself and his motives for the murder. >> I've always been an outcast my whole life. Every you know, every This is probably the first thing that was really good for me because you can offer me a cup of water and as soon as I'm about to grab it, society just throws it on the ground right in front of me every single time for 29 years. Breaks the person down. >> Yeah, it does. Usually it doesn't even take that long. >> I'm pretty strong-willed. I should have I should have should have got help a long time ago. I got talked to the The the first the 11 years of my life was domestic violence. Our stepfather was addicted to pills and alcohol. You know how the old truckers used to be on the speeds and all this other stuff and I had a we've had a fight our whole life. I've always I've always had this going on in my head and just tonight took the scale a little too far and it's I had to call because it I know everything can be used against me, but it was going to be worse than if I waited in the morning because their entire family line would have been coming. >> Brandon's words revealed that his problems had started since childhood and although the immediate trigger for the murder had been his suspicion that his wife was cheating, financial problems had also played a major role in pushing him over the edge. >> Three nights before? >> Uh here recently, yeah, me and her brother truck almost got into a fight. We were arguing on We're not really arguing, we were going back and forth on the phone a few weeks ago. They just never viewed me as somebody. You know, I get it. I'm making 15,000 a year. You know, I take your little daughter away and I lost my house, I lost my car, her car broke down, we both got laid off. I've been struggling for the past 2 years to find a career. Now that I have one, she wants to leave. I'm I finally got the opportunity to build a life together and she took it away. So I took everything away from her. You want to I confronted her. >> He shared that he suspected his wife of flirting with another man and had warned her twice. It turned out that much of his jealousy stemmed from a bitter experience in a previous relationship. >> Because I've been cheated on for 6 years out of my first relationship that lasted 9 years. Taking her to my heart actually mistake. For 6 years and then buried. But you know, it's like >> knew it was you knew it was happening for 6 years out of >> Uh my first with my first relationship, yeah, but And I told her when she was talking to this man, I said I don't trust him. I said I know how it operates. You want to go run to him with all your problems. No woman should talk to another man about their personal endeavors within their relationship. That gives them such an advantage. And she fell into it. >> Brandon Michael Dickerson was charged with murder under Texas law. And on February 3rd, 2026, he pleaded guilty. The court sentenced him to 50 years in prison, the maximum punishment available. On April 16th, 2022, police responded to a call regarding a shooting. The callers had heard a series of gunshots, after which they had seen the shooter take off westbound in a Ford Focus. Upon arrival, the cops found the bodies of two teenagers at the scene, Cameron Luna and Jorge Armendariz. >> Do you anybody got a gauze or anything? >> [music] >> What? >> Gauze? You got to have some right like right there. Here, grab your gauze. Grab your gauze. >> Let's get the monitor ready so I got a lot of knowledge. >> Yep. >> Yep. >> Do you guys have a monitor? >> Yep. >> Yep. >> Yep. >> [laughter] >> I got progress. I need to keep progressing. >> Hey, last if you turn off your lights and cancel out. She has a green Nissan Altima. >> That gives you a guy. >> Is that the vehicle just green Nissan Altima? >> Yes, sir. >> 10-4. >> Victim's dilated. He takes his last breath. >> What's going on? >> You got casings [music] all right here. >> Unfortunately, both boys were already dead. Soon, the cops spoke with eyewitnesses. Many of them had seen the shooters and their car from a distance. They couldn't determine the exact color of the vehicle or the precise age of the gunmen. Soon, one of them gave valuable information to the police. >> I saw half circle. I saw a couple license plate of the shooter. >> I saw them. Saw the shooting. I couldn't there was like three or four young men firing at the car. >> Three or four? >> At least. >> You saw two? >> Two or maybe three. >> There was a green Ford. >> It was a dark blue. >> I was >> Four door. >> I told the 911 operator, but I'll tell you too. That's just uh >> So, the Mexico New Mexico turquoise plates. >> Okay. >> Um R A N Romeo Alpha November 283 >> What did you say it was? A green Ford? >> I know where it's at. >> Okay. >> Um >> Can you describe the people? >> They were all dressed in black. >> All black? >> This guy was wearing a white shirt. >> One was wearing a white >> Short guy in black, black, black ball cap. >> It was at a distance. >> And they were all like handguns. >> I saw them. >> Saw two firing at the vehicle? >> I saw two guys get out of get out of the Ford Ford and then they just started shooting at the car and got back in. >> Two guys? >> Maybe there were three. It was fast. I mean, we were riding our bikes right here. Just started pop pop pop and turn and look and I saw the guys doing this. >> Were they older, younger, taller, shorter? >> looked medium height young guys. But they you couldn't I couldn't tell their age from but I they just kind of the way they were moving was young. >> Okay. And then south? >> I was watching them but we started It was just kind of I just saw them go that way and then I don't know where they turned. >> Some of the bystanders had mistaken the gunshots for fireworks, but then they saw the boys with the guns and realized it was a deadly attack that had left two teenagers on the ground. And the tragedy became even more heartbreaking when the father of one of the victims arrived. >> Tell me something about my son, man. Tell me something about my son. >> He's over there. He's all right. >> Tell me something about my son. >> [snorts] >> So, tell me something about my >> When you all want to call Do you know what happened? >> Let Let me see him. >> Let's call 911. >> Just let me see him, bro. >> Just give us a second. Give us a second. >> Let me call my detective. >> Hey, you can't >> Let me see him, man. >> You can't go over there. >> All right. I I I can handle it. Let me just see him. Where's my son, man? >> We can't let anybody in the scene right now. We can't even go in the scene right now. >> Is that my son? Is that my son? Is that my son? >> Give him space. Give him space. >> Who Who was it? >> Just give him space. >> He's on his phone. He said we're dead. Oh my god. Oh. Oh. You guys don't find out my I'm going TO KILL HIM. OH. NO. >> [screaming] >> AFTER CHECKING PHONE RECORDS AND social media, the police discovered that the victims had known who they were meeting. Eventually, the police identified four suspects: Javen Montoya, Carlos Gallegos, Damian Romero, and David Sola Silva, all teenagers. Soon, the cops spoke with Javen's stepmother. Her attitude said a lot about his upbringing. >> Where Where's he at? >> I told you he took off with his mom. His mom lives with me, too. >> Where else would What do >> I don't know. Ask their dad. I have no control over what they do. Like unless I'm using the car, I don't know where the hell they are at. >> Okay. >> I shouldn't even be using the >> They don't stay anywhere [music] else or anything like that? >> Mhm. No, they just stay at home. Sometimes she goes and stays um at her mom's house, [music] but >> Where is that? >> Um over there on Denny. >> Okay. >> Later, investigators discovered that the two victims had been on their way to buy a gun when they were attacked so their weapons could be stolen. Nearly 2 years after the shooting, police managed to apprehend all the suspects. >> In my mind through this investigation, I don't believe you intended for what to happen out there. I don't believe you [music] went over there or you sent them over there to kill them. Would I be correct? >> I don't have anything to say. >> Okay. Yeah, that's true. I just wanted to give you an opportunity [music] to explain your side and then you try to You're being charged You're being charged with two counts of murder, armed robbery, and conspiracy to commit armed robbery, and unlawful carrying of deadly weapon for >> I would say just [music] wait until you have your lawyer and then you can talk to your lawyer and tell them that you know that >> Well, your DNA is available in case it cuts the scene. >> The case is not the scene. It's my case. It's that y'all found at my house. >> At the scene. >> The court relied on phone records, social media messages, and forensic evidence in reaching its decisions. Javen Montoya was convicted on two counts of first-degree murder and faced up to 82 years in prison. Carlos Gallegos was convicted on the same charges and sentenced to two consecutive life terms. >> [music] >> Damien Romero was also convicted of first-degree murder. David Salas Silva, who was believed to have orchestrated the crime, took a plea deal. His murder charges were dropped and he was sentenced to 2 years of probation. On September 28th, 2021, in Carlsbad, New Mexico, police responded to a disturbing call about a child who was unconscious and not breathing. Officers were dispatched to the child's home in West Peer Street. Upon arrival, they rushed to the backyard where the child was. >> Outside? Backyard? Backyard. I'm just going to go around. Where's the kid Where's the kid at? >> He's in the backyard. >> [laughter] >> Here. How old is he? >> All right, Carlsbad, I have a 12-year-old kid not breathing, not conscious. CPR started. >> Come on, buddy. Come on, buddy. >> Come on, buddy. >> What do you have? >> What do you Unconscious juvenile male. >> Come on, baby. >> How old? How old? >> HOW OLD? >> HOW OLD, [ __ ] >> 12. >> 12. >> HEY, MARQUEZ, make sure nobody leaves this house. How long WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU ALL SAW HIM? >> I just went to the >> I'm going to call him. >> The child was 12-year-old Brent Sullivan. While the officers were performing CPR on him, one of them went to the front door of the house. There, he spoke with a woman who was close to the child's family. >> Who's that kid in the back? How do you know him? >> He's the grandson. >> Who lives here? >> Um Kelly. >> Kelly? What about this gentleman? >> Um I know he's the grandfather. >> Okay. >> I don't know where he's at. Okay. Who else is in the house? Is this a different house or is it connected? >> The officers were doing everything they could to bring Brent back to life. They felt his chest rising and that gave them hope. Soon, a team of paramedics arrived at the scene. After receiving a quick briefing, they rushed in to help save the boy. >> 12-year-old unconscious, not breathing. >> They said they gave him Narcan. >> Okay. >> Don't know how long he's been down. >> Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Let's go. Hey, just grab everything we just got from Go John, get the He's looking at me. >> [music] >> Here, you want me to do chest? >> Despite the efforts of the officers and paramedics, 12-year-old Brent did not survive. The big question was what happened to him. The officers sensed that he did not die of natural causes. Soon, they spoke with Brent's grieving grandmother, Kelly Smith, and she gave them a clue. >> He's been doing He's been doing this for a while. >> Doing this for who? >> For his mom. >> Who's mom? What do you know that he took or what do you think he took? Ma'am, this is all important information. No. You took fet Did you find around him? Do you or you think he took it? >> No, he took it he had taken it yesterday and we we >> Soon, the officers received new information. Witnesses reported seeing a suspicious man leaving the backyard just before police arrived. He was allegedly selling substances to the family. Officers searched the area and soon they located the man nearby and took him into custody. >> Hey bud. >> [snorts] >> How you doing? Let me talk to you for a little bit here, man. >> Yes, sir. >> No idea you had What's your name? >> Eric. >> Where are you coming from, Eric? >> Right down here on Western Way. >> What's your last name? >> Lopez. >> Eric Lopez? >> Yes. >> 21 Carlsbad? >> They weren't able to revive the kid? >> Do what? >> They weren't able to revive the kid? >> I don't believe so. I'm not one of the first >> Horrible, man. >> Yeah. >> The man had given the officers the name Eric Lopez, but soon they discovered that he had lied to them and that his real name was John Routt. Back at the house, the officers gathered more disturbing information from Brent's grandmother. >> What was his mom yesterday? And he stashed them somewhere. And um we looked and looked and tried to find them and he promised that he wouldn't if that he didn't have them but he did. We searched him. It's my fault cuz I was going to I had heard >> How long's he been using? >> He said he This is the fourth time he's OD'd. >> What time he OD'd on >> here? No, not here. I mean he he OD'd at his house, too. >> How many times has he OD'd here? >> Once. >> Once? Today? >> This is twice here. >> Twice here. Kelly, there's a problem here. >> I quit, dude. >> I know. I know, but you're still allowing this to come into this house and you got babies. >> Brent had grown up in an unhealthy environment, one that had directly contributed to his tragic fate. The most important person in his life, his mother, Alexis Murray, has put her son's life in danger because of her addiction. Soon, the officers spoke with her. >> Explain to me what happened. >> I didn't know. I don't know. Like yesterday morning, yesterday morning, I took my drugs to school, and when I came back, I could smell it in the [music] I could smell the hidden smoke of it. I I tried to search him, and he took off running from me, and I chased him, and when I when I Finally, I kept to keep chasing him cuz he kept getting out, and when I finally found my brother in here for my mom's watch so that I could search everything and find it cuz he he keeps doing this. He keeps >> [snorts] >> So, today So, today you brought him over here that way you could >> Yesterday morning. >> And he's been over here since yesterday? Okay. >> And then I see that like checking my purse, everything trying to find all cuz it's every like he's got places everywhere. >> [laughter] >> With foils and stuff everywhere, and I was trying to find all of it, and he I screamed and said he he wasn't here. >> Okay. >> And so, I looked all over, and he wasn't there, and and when I got in here, I heard him scream. >> Heard him scream? >> Heard him scream. >> Okay. >> As officers continued the investigation, three people were taken into custody. John Rauk was charged with providing false identification to law enforcement and being a potential felon in possession of a firearm due to a prior felony conviction. Kelly Smith was charged with intentional child abuse resulting in death. She was sentenced to 18 years in prison. Alexis Murray was charged with intentional child abuse resulting in death and child abuse related to exposing Brent to She was found guilty and sentenced to 14 years in prison. On July 12th, 2024, officers responded to reports of a stolen vehicle seen driving through the area. When police attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the driver initiated a high-speed pursuit that tragically ended in a car crash. The collision resulted in severe injuries to the driver of the vehicle that was hit. Following the crash, the minor driver fled the scene on foot leaving behind his injured passenger. Soon, the officers arrived on the scene. >> Hey, hands up. Hands up. Dude, can you stand up? Hey, come on. >> I can't move. >> Okay. >> No, I can't move. I hurt my leg. >> to move you away from the car. >> I can't. >> We need to move you away from the car. >> I can't move. >> Is that it? >> Oh. Oh my god. Please, my phone's in there. I need it. >> All right, step back up. >> No. >> [crying] >> Leave it, fire department. >> Uh look, get behind this wall, guys. >> It's broken. I know it's broken. I can't walk. Come >> Hands up. >> Oh. >> Was anybody else in your car? >> No. >> What do you mean you don't know? >> I can't move. My ow, please, please move >> We're checking your phone. >> Was anyone else in the >> car? >> The 14-year-old female passenger stated that she hadn't been driving the car, but couldn't remember who else had been inside. Soon, the officers arrested her. Then, the owner of the stolen vehicle, which was already on fire, arrived at the scene. >> Well, they stole my car yesterday and I just >> All right, you are the boss. Okay. Out of Kent? Oh, okay, this is your car, ma'am? >> Yeah, that's my car. It's the one over there. >> Okay. Did you happen to see how many people were in the car? >> Uh when I saw it, it was three persons. >> You saw three people? >> Yeah, I saw three people. It was a I think it was a The apartments where they parked once get out there. >> Okay, but when when you were following us that were when one of my partners was following you, were they like were there still three in the car? >> three in the car and then one get out on those apartments. >> talking about now. Like >> two. >> Two? >> Two. >> Right before this crash, you said >> Yes, it was two. >> [music] >> And it was I think I saw Okay, you all have Alejandro Moreno. >> What is it? >> Yeah, I think the one who was driving it was like a African-American. >> Sadly, the driver of the vehicle that was struck did not survive after sustaining severe head trauma. Police revealed that there had been four individuals inside the stolen car at the time of the crash. There was Trey, the driver, who was a serial car thief and had stolen another vehicle just days after the incident. Then, the 14-year-old girl with the broken leg and two other passengers. One month after the crash, police visited one of their homes. >> Buddy, buddy. Sorry, sorry about it. >> It's okay. >> Yeah. Good? >> I'm Officer Weaver, Kent Police. >> Yeah. >> All right, are you the mom? >> I am. What's up? >> All right, I'm Officer Weaver, Kent Police. Just so you know, my body camera's on. >> Okay. >> I'm here to talk >> It probably has to do with this injury. >> Potentially, but I have a line that he was involved in in July. >> What happened? >> In a car crash, perhaps? >> No. >> Sure? >> Yeah. Can you go Can you go in the house, please? >> What? >> Okay. >> Sorry. Do you know how he got his arm injured? >> I have no idea how he got his arm injured. >> Okay. So, on July 12th, Okay. there was a crash. You may have seen it on the news, where one of his friends was driving and they hit and killed somebody. There were four other people in the car. His wallet is in that car and they >> Close the door, please. >> I'm confused. I want to listen. >> No, I I want you to close the door. >> Okay. Sorry. It's good. Um his wallet was in the car. >> Okay. >> It was a stolen car. >> The officer explained to the woman that they had not come to arrest her son, but to determine whether or not he had been involved in the crash. It was apparent that the mother was completely unaware of her son's circle of friends and the trouble he had gotten himself into. >> Do you know who Treyu or Trey is, friend? >> I have no idea. >> Okay. But he he's a guy who's chronically been stealing cars and his parents were trying to control him. As soon as he would get off juvenile detention, he would immediately go steal one. This case, he was took off from the police, going like 100 miles an hour and hit and killed another guy. Everybody took off and ran except for one guy whose leg was broken in the car. It was one of their friends as well. So, the person we're we've charged and he's in custody is the Treyus and we're just talking to the other kids just to make sure all the stories are matching up and they're strictly just witnesses. That's the only reason I want to talk to them. >> The son was trying to eavesdrop on their conversation, so the mother and the officer moved away from the front door to speak privately. The mother was somewhat skeptical of what the officer was telling her. She had her own explanation for her son's broken arm, but soon it became clear that her son had misled her. >> Okay, this is good for me to know because I will tell you that his hand was broken on July 13th. So >> So the the crash happened really morning just after midnight doing >> And at like about 2:00 in the morning, he came running in my room saying he punched the wall. >> Yeah, I know. >> I did not believe him. >> So he's very very lucky that it's just that because I've already downloaded the the car and everything. They were doing 104 miles an hour. It's getting again. Okay, that's it. >> You have no idea. Okay, I am so upset right now because you have no clue how many times I have spoken to my children about how stupid dumb decisions like this >> What is >> could ruin and affect >> Dude, you're going to get in so much trouble if you don't stay inside till mom's ready for you. >> Okay. >> the rest of their lives. >> Yeah, it's >> And this could literally be a murder charge. >> The officer reassured the mother that her son was being viewed only as a witness and a potential victim. After recovering from the initial shock, she called her son over. The officer expected him to admit that he had been involved in the horrific crash. >> The stolen car? Okay, where did you get picked up? >> Um over there. >> Over there? >> Right. >> Um who all was in the car? First of all, who was driving the car? >> Trey. >> And what >> I don't know the other people. >> What's Trey's full name? >> I don't know his full name. I know his >> Is it Treyvon that or Trey? >> I just I don't know his last name. >> How do you know him? >> Uh friend from school. >> Which school? >> Uh Kentwood. >> Okay. And he's in your class? >> Uh no, just a friend that walks around in the hallways. I see him. >> Okay. So who you don't know who else is in the car? Any ideas? >> Uh not that it's not their names, no. >> Okay. Boys, girls? >> Uh I think it was all boys. >> Not sure though. >> No, I I literally don't know them. I just know Trey. That's it. >> All right. So, you get picked up by Trey and what happens? >> We just were driving and he got in a crash. Like, that's what happened. >> Not you were just driving, but what were you just doing? >> So, again, I'm asking you questions I know answers to, okay? So, we're just driving at some point, but at some point did you guys notice the police behind you? >> Yeah. >> Okay. How did you know they were police? >> The sirens. And the lights. >> Yes. Yeah. >> So, what happened when Trey saw the lights and siren? >> He took off. >> Okay. How fast do you guys think you were going? >> I don't [music] know. Fast. >> Okay. And what happened? >> He crashed. That's all I know. >> Do you know what he crashed into? >> No. I didn't know anything else. >> Okay. You didn't see what he hit? >> Nope. I literally don't know. >> So, what happened after the crash? >> I We just >> [music] >> I don't know. >> No, don't lie. What did you do? >> what happened. >> Okay. So, the car crashes, it comes to a stop, it starts to catch on fire. >> Yes, sir. >> You obviously didn't stick around and sit in the car. Where did you go? >> Uh I don't know where I went. I have no clue where I went. >> Did you stay at the scene or did >> No, sir. >> So, you ran away? >> Uh yeah. >> Okay. That's where we're getting. Okay. >> In the end, the 16-year-old driver, Trey, was charged with multiple felonies, including second-degree murder, vehicular homicide, felony hit-and-run, two counts of vehicular assault, attempting to elude a police vehicle, and possession of a stolen vehicle. He remained in custody with bail set at $500,000. At the time of the crash, he was already on electronic home monitoring for a prior vehicle case. His record also included referrals for harassment in June 2023 and for taking a motor vehicle without permission in September 2023. On September 7th, 2024, Rome police in Georgia spotted a black Dodge Charger speeding dangerously at over 100 mph. Moments later, farther down Turner McCall Boulevard, another deputy discovered the same vehicle crashed into a hillside after a head-on collision with another car. >> Yeah. That >> It's on fire. >> Hey, stop right there. Stop right there. >> Dispatch, this black vehicle is on fire. It's in the grass between the park and Turnham Road. >> Turn around. >> Where's the driver of the Hellcat? >> They're sitting there. >> I don't know who is sitting there. I don't know. >> And there's one sitting right there. >> But he was the one flying. >> Dispatch, we're 1095 with the driver. >> Hey. >> On the driver's side, he's moving. I mean the passenger. >> Hey, 820, Dispatch, do you have EMS coming 10-18? >> I will get the fire department. >> You do? Okay, help me. >> 10-4, they hit a vehicle head-on. >> Okay, they're bleeding. They're bleeding right there. >> Go ahead and get fire units en route. >> 820, Dispatch, we're going to have massive injuries in this vehicle he hit. Damn. >> I need him in the car. >> What do you need me to do? >> I got I got still got a pulse right here. >> Okay, yes. Yes, thank you, Jesus. >> Oh. >> Hey, hey, we got a child. We got a child in the back. >> Dispatch, I think we have an entrapped in this vehicle that's on fire. >> Hey, she looks okay. She looks okay. She's moving. >> The lady in the front >> Can you get her out? >> No pulse, no pulse on her. I don't know how we're going to get to it. >> Ain't nobody in that car? >> No, there's someone else in the There is someone else in >> I just arrested him. >> The officers discovered severely injured people in one of the vehicles. There was no time to waste if they wanted to save lives, but there was something even more alarming. There was a baby in the back seat. >> Dispatch, we have a child in the back seat of this vehicle. I have a pulse on the driver. I do not have a pulse on the passenger. It's going to be the one that was hit head-on, not the one on fire, and I'm going to need more than two ambulances, probably three. >> Do they have pulses? >> She does. He does not right now. Can you get the baby out? >> Yeah, you get the baby out. >> Hey, I can get her on this side. >> Hey, just come sit on the curb right here, okay? >> I can get the baby out. >> It's okay, lovey. It's okay. >> Go ahead and pull the Just pull the headrest >> Oh my god. Okay. You have the whole car seat, you said? >> Her leg's probably broken. >> Oh my god. >> All right. Can you pull him out? >> Yes. >> Go ahead and >> me to get her out with the car seat? Okay. >> Hold on. Hold on. >> It's okay, lovey. I got you, baby. She's properly Yeah, she's good. >> Yeah, he's The baby's okay. I see him breathing. >> Where are the ambulances >> God, they're taking so long. She's like it's She's breathing and her back. >> Chaos and shock were overwhelming even for the officers. Meanwhile, the car that had caused the crash was burning on the hillside. Soon, police noticed signs of life inside. There was a passenger trapped, and officers reacted immediately. >> Be careful. I think there's somebody in there. Hey. Come on. Come over here with us. You're not You're not a He was a passenger. >> Okay. >> Come on. Come over here. We need to get away from this car. >> Come on. >> Come on. You okay? >> Yeah, I'm all >> Come on, buddy. Was anybody else in the car with you guys? Just It was just you two? >> Firefighters were devastated to confirm that the mother of the baby, 23-year-old Kadrian Harris, and the passenger, 23-year-old Malik Henderson, had not survived the crash. Soon, the victim's family arrived at the scene, shocked by what had happened. >> Is that her? >> Oh, you know her? >> Yes, that's my friend. >> Oh, wow. >> I want to try to get her out. >> Oh, I'm sorry. >> are the babies doing? How are the babies doing? >> They're taking her now. I jumped in there and he said, "We're leaving now. If you're not going, get out." Do you need anything? >> My baby. >> Take a breath. >> It's senseless, man. God, it's senseless. Damn. >> This is my best friend. Give me the number. His best Her dad's bald head. >> Her dad? >> Damn, bro. >> Asian. >> It's Asian, I'm a girl. >> It's a man. >> Hey. >> Oh, what the [ __ ] >> On the road, many people had gathered. While some officers comforted the friends and family of the victims, others [music] spoke to a witness of the horrific crash, who provided details about the incident. >> What is he doing? >> Where was this car coming >> It was coming this way. >> They impacted right right over here. >> About where all that glass and stuff is? >> Yeah. >> So, I saw from the from the outside. >> Okay. >> I saw the car car That car went that way. That's all I And then I just drove over here. >> Okay. >> So, I can assess the damage. >> One of the officers later determined that the driver responsible for the crash, later identified as Omar Garcia, smelled of alcohol. The suspect admitted he had been drinking, justifying it by saying he had just left his friend's funeral. But, the real grief belonged to the families of those who had died in the crash he caused. Soon, relatives of Kaedrian arrived at the scene. >> We're her big sisters. >> You're her sisters? >> Yes. >> Who's your Who's your sister? I'm sorry. >> Kaedrian Kaedrian Harris. >> Okay. >> The child is dead. >> How old's her child? >> The child? >> Yeah. >> She did They baby. >> Are you blood relatives? >> Yes. We're have the same baby. >> I hate to be the one to tell you this. >> Oh, Jesus. The baby's at the hospital with no family members because we couldn't find a way to get a hold of them. All right, but I don't want to be the one to tell you this, but I have to. Your sister is not going to make it out of this. >> Is she breathing? >> She hasn't been since the accident. >> Can we see her, please? >> No, it's an active investigation. I know there's a lot going on. >> Who was in the car with her? >> Ma'am, we can't tell you. >> Our daddy is on his way to be on his way. >> Your daddy is? Okay. I'm sorry. I really am. >> My dad's on the way. >> Is he on the way to the state you're saying? >> Or is he on his way to raise in the hospital? Was somebody in the car in the accident with you? >> Did she have all her hair? >> She just had one. >> Okay, so what happened? I'm not getting mad at you, but what happened? Somebody [laughter] got to tell us what happened. >> There was a car that was driving extremely dangerous and hit them head-on. >> So she the only one that's dead? >> There's somebody else in the car with her, too. Father? >> Yeah. >> I don't have any good news for you, unfortunately. But the the child is at the hospital. If we can get a family member up there at the hospital then to be with the child. >> All right. Who Who fault was it? >> It It was not their fault. >> Yeah, wasn't their fault. Say on that, man. >> Yeah. >> That's what the whole thing had me. He was rolling, man. >> Were you You were with the >> I was Scott. I was with the >> Yeah, you were >> So is he in jail? >> We [laughter] don't have him. >> Is he going to be charged with murder, right? >> The family of the deceased, Kadriana, could not believe what had happened. It was a tough pill to swallow, especially since they lost a loved one just because of a drunk driver. But another person suffered the most devastating loss, the mother of Kadriana's [music] deceased passenger, Malik. >> Cuz we can at that point we can do emergency contact. >> He's not in that car. >> Ma'am, >> Please tell me my son is in that car. >> Hey, ma'am, you can't >> Please >> go over there. That's my son. >> Hey, hey, hey. >> Hey, he's cold. >> Hey, hey. >> No. >> Listen, listen, listen. >> Sir, I'm going to lay down. >> You can't. Unless you don't want to be here. Let's go. It's okay. Hey. >> [laughter] >> Please, y'all, please. >> We can't let you do that. >> Please. >> We can't. >> Please, just call his name. Just call his name and see if he answers. I can't move. I can't leave him in there. I can't let him be in there. >> There's nothing you can do right now, okay? I'm sorry. >> Please, don't let it be the baby, bro. >> In the middle of the tragedy, there was one piece [music] of good news. Kaedrian's 1-year-old baby was airlifted to a children's trauma center in critical condition, but ultimately survived her injuries. Omar Garcia was found to be under the influence at the time of the collision. He was charged with two counts of vehicular homicide, one count of serious injury by vehicle DUI, driving without a license, fleeing, and attempting to elude, reckless driving, and driving too fast for conditions. He was booked into the Floyd County Jail. After pleading guilty, Garcia was sentenced to 20 years in prison. On May 29th, 2024, in Castleberry, Florida, at 9:07 a.m., deputies were dispatched to an apartment of 43 San Jose Circle after a disturbing 911 call. The caller identified himself as 37-year-old Farrell Torres, who admitted that he had his girlfriend, Vanessa Maurice Santiago, who he claimed wasn't breathing. When officers arrived at the scene, Torres was outside the building, lying on the ground, and crying. >> 506 507 You're on Arby's. >> Yeah, I got it. Yeah. Here, here, just chill here for a second. Just so that I don't do anything stupid. Stay like that, all right? Don't don't do anything stupid, okay? >> I'm not. >> I hear you. All right, brother, you're good to go. >> Is it just her in the apartment? >> Yes, sir. >> What's her name? All right. >> Sheriff's office. >> You stay here. >> Sheriff's office. >> After Torres was placed in handcuffs, the officers entered the apartment [music] where Vanessa Maurice Santiago lay dead surrounded by blood. A steak knife was embedded in her face. It turned out that Torres had reached out to family members immediately after the murder. His sisters immediately arrived at the scene. >> He came over here to the house. He was just freaking out. And I was like, "What's going on?" And he's like, "I was like, "Is there someone in He was like, "Yeah." All right, so I assumed And I kept telling him like, "How do you talk to yourself? How do you talk to yourself? How do you talk to yourself?" So then here we are. >> So, what did he tell you specifically? >> I didn't even I honestly didn't even want to know how it happened. He just said he blacked out, and I don't want to know. I don't even want to know what happened. >> All right. >> I don't want to >> No, no, no, I'm not going to say it. Just What did he say like what happened to her or her condition? >> He just said he just said he blacked out. >> He blacked out or something happened? >> Yeah, I got it. >> I don't really know. >> Okay. >> I didn't want to know. >> Did you do something to her? >> No, it just gets >> The same thing we >> The same thing >> Are these in there? >> No, I didn't say that. >> Just say >> I said sorry. >> The officers questioned Ferrell inside the patrol car. They wanted to understand his motive for the murder. He gathered himself [music] and soon began explaining what had all led to the killing starting with the early hours of that day. >> Okay. She [snorts] said she was getting ready? >> Yeah, she was going to work. >> And were you? >> And I told her I told her good morning. >> [laughter] [snorts] >> She was mad. >> She was mad? >> Yeah. >> What was she mad about? >> Because the camera wasn't working. >> You said the camera? >> Yeah. >> Which which camera wasn't working? >> The whole camera. >> The whole camera? >> [laughter] >> And that's what room is that? Is that the master bedroom or the main bedroom? >> [cough] [clears throat] [snorts] >> The master bedroom. >> Master bedroom, okay. >> [laughter] >> Okay. >> What? >> What happened after that? You said good morning and she was mad the camera wasn't working. >> At that point Ferrell couldn't continue his account. The officers waited patiently, but he simply cried and remained silent. Their attention then shifted to Vanessa's mother, who had arrived at the scene. One of the officers took on the difficult task of delivering the tragic news. >> Where are the children right now, ma'am? >> They're in the daycare. Supposedly, she takes them in the morning. >> What daycare? >> Huh? >> What daycare? >> It's It's on Palm. I think it's on Palm. He talks to her every morning. >> Okay. >> Is she okay? >> Unfortunately, um your daughter's not assisting. >> WHAT? NO! >> [screaming] >> NO! NO! NO! >> OKAY, LET'S >> NO! >> LET'S SIT DOWN. LET'S SIT DOWN. Let's sit down. Let's sit down. I know. It's okay. Just sit down. Just sit down. Just sit down. Just sit down. >> You're okay. You're okay. >> Okay, just sit down. All right. I'll be all right. You're all right. Hey, hey, just squeeze my hand. Just squeeze my hand. Just squeeze my hand. You'll be okay. Just stay seated. Stay seated. >> Oh my God. Lord, take me! Take me! Oh my God! Oh my God! >> I know. >> No! Oh my God! >> You're okay. >> Oh God! Oh please, Jesus. >> What happened? >> Oh my God! >> MOMMY. >> NO! NO! >> [screaming] >> NO! NO! NO! NO! WHERE'S THE CAR? WHERE'S THE CAR? >> GOT TO GO. >> WHERE'S THE CAR? >> NO! >> [screaming] >> Both of them. >> Okay, what happened? What happened? No! That's not >> There was an incident between the both of them. >> Mommy, MOMMY, [screaming] MOMMY, MOMMY. >> IT'S OKAY. HEY. YOU'RE ALL RIGHT. >> MOMMY. NO! >> [screaming] >> Vanessa's mother was devastated. The officers and her relatives did everything they could to comfort her, but that simply wasn't possible at that moment. Understandably so. She was living every parent's worst nightmare. >> [music] >> Vanessa's grieving mother and one of her sisters struggled to process the painful reality. Waves of grief came and went. Another outpouring of tears followed moments later when the victim's other sister arrived. >> [crying] [laughter] >> You're >> [crying] >> not You're not serious enough, but just just wait. Just wait, okay? Just wait. >> [crying] [crying] [screaming] [laughter] >> They're at school. They're not here. Don't worry. They're fine. >> Vanessa's sisters did everything they could to comfort their mother. In fact, there were two more indirect victims of this tragedy, Vanessa's children. But, they were also the ray of hope that gave the family a reason to keep going. >> Mommy, you got to be strong for the boys, Mommy. You got to be strong for the boys. >> [laughter] >> You got to be strong for the boys, okay? You got to be strong for the boys. >> Hey, Saki, bring her back over here. Yeah, let's just give her some space. Yeah, yeah, okay, that's fine. Let's Let's go over here, then. Wait, just No, no, hey, don't don't apologize. We >> Perrell Torres was charged with second-degree murder, demonstrating a dangerous and depraved mind without premeditation under Florida law. He was transported to the Seminole County Jail, where bond was denied. A lost life can never be brought back, but someone has to deliver the unbearable news to unsuspecting parents. And the ones who sometimes take on that burden are the cops. And no matter how many times they have to do it, it never gets easier.
