All she had to do was head with them upstairs. But she acted bored and irritated like the whole thing was a waste of her time. Passing on that deal was something she will surely regret later. 393 for 341. Can you give me a call? Excuse me. Hey, my turn. Give me a call. The sh's gone. It doesn't matter. I'll figure out who she is at the station. Do you want to go upstairs with them and get a ticket? You want to come with me right now? Yeah. Do you want to go upstairs and get a ticket? As officers started going through her shopping bags, they asked the woman, Elise, to clarify which items actually belong to her. The cops then confronted her about the shoes she was wearing. While she had multiple excuses, it wasn't hard for the cops to spot her lies. What's What's not your stuff? It's a lot, man. I got to go through. It's not a lot. It's right there. This bag is ours. I think this is our food. This is the only bag she came in. So, I'm back with mine. That's the only bag she came in with. Is there stuff in here that's yours, though? Shoes in there. That's my shoes that I've been had in there. Okay. Yeah, those worn. Yeah, those are worn. Oh, those shoes. These shoes right here. These. Let me see. Kick them off. Kick them off for a second. What do you mean? Kick them off. Like, take them off. Just grab What do you mean? We're going to go ahead. Someone just took I'm sorry. Yeah. You're right. Dirty. I didn't know that was yours. Do you want your other shoes back so I can have my shoes back or what? What do you mean my other shoes back? Those shoes I literally want you take them off. Try them on looking in the mirror. I'm just saying. You sure are sassy for a thief. I'm always sassy. Well, that's a lot of consistency. Yeah. The receipt. No, it's back in. I give it to you. But it had four things on it. Okay. It had the two It had the two country time two time. So, one of these is ours. Can you um ask which a No, I've paid with that. And tell them to bring the camera down cuz So, what's going to happen? You're going to be trespassed from the store for a year. You cannot come back. You're going to come back. You got to call them again. Okay. The conversation was going nowhere and her story kept shifting. The officers realized they were just wasting their time. So, they decided to move things along. However, Elise was having a hard time accepting that the negotiation phase was over. Oh, this is all that's paid for. Yep. Oh, these are quite a bit. That's a Was this a selfch checkout? Uh, she concealed everything like on the floor and self check out. She only bought this. She didn't even present the other stuff. Try to pick. Oh, yes, I did. I put the scanner out there and I scanned it. All right. It was on the receipt you gave me. Oh, it was on the receipt here. Okay. You're famous. I mean, not Instagram famously about You're definitely Instagram. I don't know you. Actually, I can get all our information from you later, right? Yeah. Yeah. You guys can here. Here. Here's those shoes. Put me in a car. Yeah. You're coming to jail for what? For retail theft. I just said that I was going to turn around and No, I just said that you weren't feeling turn around. Okay. Well, then can No, wait. Cuz y'all can't leave. Stop. Stop. Okay. I'm trying to put I'm trying to bring that to the person in the car. No, they don't get No, they can't. They need They need my No, they don't. Yes, they do. No, they don't. How come they don't? Because I don't know who they are. I know who they are. They're my No, no. You said that. No, you said that you didn't know them originally to me cuz No, just cuz I came with them doesn't mean I know them. I didn't say I w I said I didn't walk in with them. Okay. Well, it means you know you didn't know them. So, your stuff's coming with me cuz I don't want anyone to take it from you. No, they're not going to take from me if you just give it to them. I'm giving you permission to give it to them. No, it's okay. Even with cuffs on, Elise was still trying to take control of the situation like she was in charge. She wanted her stuff handed off to the people she'd earlier claimed not to know. The officer stuck with protocol, reminding her that her fate was sealed. That way, you'll get it back when you go. No, I I just want it with them. Female over here. You don't need a female. I just know. No, I'm like I'm just asking you. Can you give that to them? That's it. That's all. Can wait either for the station or right here. I don't know. Could be testing. Just let it out. I ain't got nothing in my hat. Okay. Put my hat back on. Turn around. Put away. Turn around. Why? Cuz there I have on a whole dress. All right. There's nothing. Can I put my hat back on? No, it's with me. It'll go on your back. It'll go on your back. Don't worry. Can a lady come and grab my bag? I'm just letting you know. Why not? No, because Okay, I'm sitting down now. But get in. I just No, cuz I want her to I just want her to grab my thing. It's all coming with me. Let's go. Let's go. I didn't do all that. I'm just saying. This ain't a boy. Don't turn around. I tried to turn around and y'all just instant handcuffed me and I'm just trying to in the car. Get in the car. I'm just trying to get my We're going to pull you in. We're going to pull you in the car if you don't pull Don't turn around. Y don't have to pull me in the car. My things with her. Turn. Let's go. It's going to happen. Let's go. Let's go. Oh my god. I get my things with her. No. Here. Seat belt safety first. Why my things can't be with her? Because they're coming with you so nobody takes them. No, but I'm trying to get in contact with her so she knows. Too late. It's not too late. trying to do. That's what I was already doing. That's what I was already doing when you tried to handcuff me and I was trying to turn around. Elise was charged with retail theft and obstructing identification. The total value of the stolen merchandise was about $700. As it turned out, there was also an active warrant for her arrest in a neighboring county. On March 29th, 2023, officers were called to a Target store for a suspected shoplifting in progress. Two of the three suspects were outside near a parked vehicle while the other one was still inside filling up a shopping cart. Before confronting the suspects, the officer also discovered that the suspect's vehicle had been reported stolen. Yeah, he's potentially still inside the store. If I get another unit on the back side and make sure it doesn't spin up without one to the front with me and then the next one just go to the back side. But there's one exiting the rear driver's side of the vehicle now. He's still in there. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Just wait. I got partners in row. Jeff, that's him walking toward you. Hey, get out of the car. Get out the car. Come over here. This is a stolen car. Keep your hands out of your pockets. Have a seat on the sidewalk here. Have a seat on the curb. You're not free to leave. Is anybody else in the car? Don't reach for anything in your bag. Okay. Are you pregnant? No. Okay. Hey, you're not free to go. Sit down on the curb. Sit down on the curb. Do not reach in your pockets and do not run. You understand? You're not free to go. You're being investigated for vehicle trespass right now. I'll make sure cuz you're probably going to end up in handcuffs here in a minute. Why? 26. I have another uh compliant outside of the vehicle with me. Where's your buddy at? I know there's one more inside the store. He's got a cart full of this all you walking past me. Is he your boyfriend? Is he just a friend? Is he both? You're going to be detained in handcuffs. Thank you for being cool. The term vehicle trespass refers to being inside a car without the owner's permission, usually with the intent to steal or commit another crime with the two suspects outside already in custody. Officers turn their attention to the third suspect who is still inside the store. Uh he's in the department. Do you have video of him driving here? I pick up that cuz that car is stoked. So stoked. Yeah. Okay. I pick up that. I see like possibly Hispanic male black jacket with a beard. Yeah. And he's in the sporting goods. Yeah. 26 LP just advised he's in the sporting goods section. We're walking over now. Black baseball cap, black hoodie, dark colored pants, black Nike shoes, long hair. Hey man, you're not free to leave. Go. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. I'm done. I'm done. I'm done. I'm done. I'm done. I'm done. I'm done. I'm done. You could have done that, man. Never done that. I know. You know I was going to catch you. I know. So why'd you run for the line? You have any weapons on you? Corporate 1.44. I'm going to turn you to your side. Okay. Yes, sir. You're not. No problems. Are you injured? Yeah. Running away usually makes things worse, especially when the situation isn't fully clear yet. In this case, taking off did more harm than good. Who's your friend? What's their name? We're talking to them inside. So, I'm just seeing if you're actually Tell me. What is it? It's Pat. Pat? Okay. Does Pat have a job? I think he goes to work cuz I don't really see him out there. So, why is he out here stealing stuff from Target then? I know he was stealing. So, what were you doing? Why were you hanging on the car? Uh, just talking. Typically, right, you know how this works. One or two stay in the car and watch out while the other one goes inside and they call like, "Oh, cops are coming." Like, let's not BS me, right? didn't insult our intelligence cuz I don't really like being fed lines. You know what I mean? So what? I was on. Yes. Okay. Okay. But he told you he was going to go steal. You just told me you were on watch, dude. Yeah, I know. I was let know after you show up. This this Mando, you know, it's like a street bowl. Uh-huh. While the male accomplice was admitting he'd been acting as a lookout, officers inside were escorting the shoplifter Patrick out to the patrol car. On the way, they went over the possible charges. He said he only ran out of panic. What are we looking at? What are you looking at? Oh, you uh probably obstructing. Maybe resisting. No, maybe possessing stolen vehicle. Possess stolen vehicle. Yeah, we'll go with obstruction. What? That's right. Hold on. I'll put you in the back here. I'm going leave you right here. I didn't hear me. I ain't do nothing alone. I thought Yeah. When I realized you guys were there for me. I panic. I see what you're saying. I didn't, you know, I had no intention of running. How about you kick the roof over there? Kick what roof? What are you talking about? Thank you guys for your service. I kicked the roof. Yes. Here you go. Something probably young. Can I tried something? Can you swing your feet in? Yeah. Yeah. Let me get you some water. Fire department's here for you. Okay. Oh, I'm sorry. I'm spilling on you. [Music] Keep going. Please. What you doing with my girl's car? So, we're going to discuss that after I read you your rights. Okay. Is that my girl? Probably. With Patrick secured in the back seat, the attention shifted back to the stolen vehicle and how it ended up in their hands. That's when the explanation started. Nothing too solid. Just a mix of names, favors, and vague details. The more they talked, the less sense it made. Who's Patrick? Who's the guy over there? The dude with the ponytail and stuff. Um, I don't know. Okay. So when you say a bill of sale for the vehicle? Yeah, she gifted it to him. She gift just gave him this car. Yeah. To who? To Patrick? Yeah. Okay. How much do you think that car is worth? Uh not as much as you think it is. Okay. It's got a lot of issues. A lot. Okay. How many cars have you been given in your life? Um a couple. A couple? Yeah. Really? You must have very nice friends. So the thing is like like she owes him money first of all. Second of all, that that vehicles a lot of issues that she can't get fixed. She doesn't have the money or the resources to get fixed. Hey, uh Mr. Thomas, sir, who's the owner of the vehicle? Carla. Carla. Cuz she's saying Carla gifted the vehicle and she has a bill of sale. Interesting. Okay. So, I was flagged down. The reason I was I was flagged down because they believe you're going to shop. Okay. I don't do that. No, I don't. Well, they suspected you wanted, right? So, that's why I was flagged down. But what can you tell me? What can you tell me about this car? Who is this car belong to? Carla. My my girlfriend. Carla. Is that who was in the vehicle? That was not Carla I spoke with that was in the car. That's why she's mad. Oh, because you're talking to this girl. Yeah. So, okay. So, this vehicle, this vehicle up here is reported as a stolen vehicle. Since when? I don't know. I didn't check the details on that. When I walked up and I ran the plate through my dispatch, they advised it was stolen. Okay. So, that's the other part of this investigation. The same few names kept coming up, but none of them were helping much. The relationship history was unclear. The car's ownership even less so. The story changed every time someone opened their mouth. At that point, the only thing consistent was the confusion. She left with me last night, so I need to call her. She's right. She She's right there. Carla? Yeah, Carla. Is that Carla? Um, I believe so. Okay. So, who's the own? So, if Carla gave it to somebody, who do they give it to? Patrick. Who is Patrick? He is the guy in the store, I guess. Okay. But they they were dating for a while and broke up. I don't know. Things had calmed down, but the main issue wasn't going anywhere. The car was still marked as stolen. The woman claimed she had a bill of sale more than once, but when asked to show it, she always had a reason why she couldn't. All right. So, stand up for me. Turn towards me. Yeah, that way. That'll work. All right. You are out of handcuffs. Do you have keys to the vehicle? There is your bag. There still is a probably good probability you're going to get charged with a crime. Okay. You understand that, right? No. Why? Well, because you're in a stolen vehicle, it's not stolen. Okay. Can you show me the Yeah. Well, then why would somebody call and report it? Cuz she's a crazy. Then why are you dealing with her? I I don't I I try not to. I been telling Patrick not to for a long time. Are you dating Patrick? We've been off and on for like three or four years. I need Wi-Fi. I can't help you with that. Can I walk over towards Target? You can do whatever you want. Oh, wait. Actually, no, you cannot. Uh cuz I believe they want you trespass from Target for life. Okay. So, that means don't go into the store. Don't go in front of the store. Okay. Okay. Right. Um if you do, you can get charged with a crime. If you go in and shoplift, it's considered a burglary. Yes, sir. Okay. So, you can go wherever you want to try and do that. And I'll make a note that you said that you saw a bill of sale. He actually has a bill of sale at his house. Well, that'd be a great thing to bring to court. Okay. It's just is it accurate? Is it is it true or is it not? Yeah, I know. Like, cuz I know people force things and I know there are angry ex-girlfriends. Like, I don't know what the truth is. Like I'm not trying to take one side over the other. She is angry and whatever, but she did give up the car. A lifetime trespass might sound excessive, but it's standard in retail theft cases. With that handled, the cops turned back to Patrick, who was complaining about what he said was a broken rib. Whether the pain was real or just part of the act, they didn't change the fact that he was still going to jail. My partner felt it. There was nothing else besides the rib, right? No. Where we going? I mean, just um All right, I'm just double checking now that you're standing. All right, let's walk over this way. Right here. Run down. Yeah, we're going to follow you guys down. Hey, brother. He's going to take the cuffs off. You got You got to get your feet up first. I was I was trying to get up cuz I can't. Let's uh change plan. Put your feet up first. Um guess not. They took her. I will find out. I needed someone to get a hold of my mom. Yeah, we're going with you to the hospital. So, this isn't like a free pass cuz you're going to go to No, no, I understand. I understand it. I need my mom to I'm going to jail. Okay. Yeah, it's a short drive. We'll we'll talk you down there. Tell her I need her tell my mom I'm going to jail. Hey, also you're you're going to be trespassed for life from here. Okay, don't come back. What do I do? They just don't want you here. They suspected you're going to shop with Patrick was charged with obstruction and tampering with an investigation. Based on how things played out, his lawyer will surely have a hard time defending him in court. On June 2nd, 2023 in Florida, officers were called to a Target after a staff reported two women shoplifting. Store security had been observing them from the start. When they walked past the registers without paying, officers stepped in right here. How you doing, lady? You guys have your seat for this? sell squad has two items. Three items. Hold on. Oh, you made us out one. Hey, which bag was it? The bag right there. Yeah, the beige one. Hey, is there anything in that bag? We should know merchandise in that bag. Yes or no? Is it in your bag? Is it your bag? This your bag? Is this your bag right there? No. It's not Whose bag is it? Okay, we're not playing this game. Yeah. Wait, that I said put your hand behind your Putups on her. Okay. Are you Yeah. Put your hand behind your back now. Put your hand behind your back. What? Let go the phone. Let go the phone. Switch your arm for it won't hurt you. All right. It didn't take long for the officers to make an arrest. With the receipt in hand and a quick check through their bags, the officer had enough evidence to act. And while they waited for a Target employee to bring the full list of items that hadn't been paid for, the two women still seemed to think there was a way out. I paid for that stuff. We paid for all that stuff. All right, we'll we'll figure out what you need to pay for over here. Can I come? Nope. How old are you? 24. All right, then there. How are you? Okay. Okay. All right. I'll be right back. I'll get you guys a receipt. You have to stay. Give me a second. Can we just pay for the stuff? No. Why didn't you just pay four or five minutes ago? So, and then we asked you and he didn't want to tell us. No. And we were sad. You said it already like what the heat of the moment. But there's only a couple idols for paying for everything else. We won't come back here. The trespasses. That's definitely going to happen. And then he's going to go see what's not paid for and then go. It's just the stuff in the bag. It's just the stuff in the bag. It's our bag. It's our bag. We honestly just found it. You found the bag. Yeah. By saying they just found it is not a full denial, but it's also not admission either. And while there was a bit of possibility that they were telling the truth, in the eyes of the officers who have dealt with a lot of thieves before, it was a lame excuse. Do you have an ID in there? Um, I think mine is in there. Where's your ID? I don't have one. You don't have ID? This Sergeant Dun. She's going to pat you guys down. You guys like a poker cut or anything like that? We should know about you have any products on you? I still have the pat down though. You have any more anywhere else? Mhm. Okay. Open your legs. Do you understand if I miss anything? I don't have any, please. Forgot. Okay. Turn around. Do you have anything on you that I need to know about? No. How much? $126. $100. $126. What was it? Oh, my bad. All the stuff you grabbed. It was only a toy. It was only a Target's expensive. That's That's why it's $126. All right. Come on. We're going to go in the car. The value of the stolen items was over $100, which is petite theft under Florida law. a first-degree misdemeanor. If convicted, they could be looking up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine. They acted like it wasn't a big deal, but they might change their mind once they're already facing the consequences. Like, literally, have a seat. You have a seat. You can call when you get when you get into jail. Okay. Can I take a picture? All right. The camera you You're not taking a picture of me. Yes, you can. No, you ain't. What? Hey, bro. Don't grab me, man. You want to get another charm? You want another charge? But you don't have to let him take a picture of me. I'm asking you to step out. No, that's what the mug shot is for. Step out. I'm not. Step out. You want another Let him take a picture of me without my permission. You want another charge? You're not going to let him take a picture of me. You have my permission. Can you step over? What if he taking a picture of me? A felony for what? I don't want him taking a picture of me. That's not legal. Yes, it is. For him to take a picture of me, ma'am. It is. It is. Step out the vehicle. You're just going to make things worse for me. I don't want a picture taken. Take out the vehicle. Picture taken. Just take a right. I don't want a picture taken. Like, ma'am. Ow. Look up. Look up. Appreciate you. Have a seat. Taking a photo of the thief is standard practice in many stores. It's how loss prevention documents repeat offenders. It's not about shaming. It's about making sure they don't come back. Refusing at that point doesn't do much good. Still, the suspects took it personally. Tight. All right. Step out. Why are you yelling? Like, I'm I'm telling you, it's tight as hell. So, how you want me to fix them? How am I going to push up if they're already tight? You guys tighten me up when I was standing right there. Get out of the car. I can't move. I need help. It's tight. Like really tight. We're asking you to do it on your own, of course. I need help. I'm telling you your body this way. I cannot move this part. That works. Come on. I asked you to do the first time. Come on out. You should have just did that. Swung the leg over the first time. I'm going to take the handcuffs off. I don't care. You're going to take the jacket off. That's fine. Okay, you take it off. You can do anything else. You're a nice woman. [Laughter] [Music] Thank you. I appreciate it. I'm sorry, guys. Could have said something on that pass. No, no, no. The rain could have come down on the worst time, huh? Yeah. I got the uh It must be almost 5:00. The other receipt right here. This is the receipt for uh It's added with the jacket on there now. So Oh, the jacket wasn't on here before. Yeah. So now it's more Oh, the jacket she had on, was it? Yeah. Oh. Okay, cool. Both women were charged with petite theft. One of them had marijuana and received an additional charge for possession. What began as a carefree stroll past the registers ended in criminal charges. All that for a few items that they probably didn't need in the first place. On December 27th, officers responded to a reported retail theft at a Target in Flaggler County, Florida. A male suspect had stolen a box of Mike's hard lemonade. When an officer tried to stop him, he fled the scene on bicycle. Stop. Stop. Stop right now. Dude, you better stop. I'm telling you. Better stop. Stop. Stop. Stop. Stop the bike now. Get off the bike. Hey, get off. Get off. I'm telling you. I'm telling you right now. I do need Get off my gun. You get off. I'm going to tase you. Get off of me. I'm going to tase you. I'm going to tase you. Seriously, stop, dude. Dude, let go of my gun right now. I'm going to shoot you. Please. I want you. I really am trying to get you on the head. I'm telling you. Instead, I'm going to tell you what you're trying to do. Well, I got to get him off my No. Stop. Seriously. No. Let go. Stop. of my gun. Stop. Stop. Please stop. Please. Please. I'm not going to hurt anyone. I'm just trying to get away. You're not getting away by holding on to the gun. I'm telling you to let go of my gun right now. I didn't say to do this. Stop. Please help me. Stop. Let go of that yourself and let go of the gun. Man, you're about to get tased. Okay. I'm sorry. I called for help. Please. Roll over on your back now. On your belly now. Trying to grab an officer's gun while asking for help wasn't exactly something a sane person would do. Whatever his mental state was, it didn't change the legal reality. He has committed a felony. Officers had to act fast. The commands kept coming, but he wouldn't stop. So, things just continued to go downhill. Roll over on your belly. Roll over on your belly. You're going to get tased. You're going to get tased. Please let me go. I'm telling you, you're going to get tased. You're going to get tased. I worked for you guys. Shoot me in the head. I don't want them to. You're going to get tased. Let me go. All right. Stay back. Stay back. You get down. Stop. Get on the ground. Stop. Echo 226. Tango deployed. Roll over on your back. On your belly. Stomach. Roll on your stomach now. Stop it. Get on the ground. Stop. Get on the ground. Stop. Stop. Stop it. You're going to get chased again. Stop it. Get on the ground. On the ground now. Stop it. Get on the ground. No. Stop. Get on the ground. Roll over. Resisting. Get off. Stop. Stop it. Stop. Stop it. Give me a cuff. Give me a cuff. No. Give me a cuff. Stop. Seriously, man. Stay down. No. Stop. Please. Please. Stop. Stop resisting or you're going to get tased again. You got him that time. Roll him over. Here we go. Roll him to the right. Roll him to your other way. Other way. Other way. I worked for you guys. Which way do you want? That way. So I can get his cuffy on him. Once the cuffs were on, the struggle stopped. But the man kept talking incoherently. He sounded like someone who'd been falling apart for a while. It wasn't an excuse for his actions, but it might explain why things spiraled so fast. Whatever pushed him to that point, had probably been building for some time. What you guys told me to do? Bring your arm out. Guys, quick 17 years it took me to tase somebody. It's my first one, bro. It's up against the curb right over there. I grabbed a hold of him riding the bike. He went over the side, swung on me. I was trying to try to turn over. Yep. Yeah. 17 years it took me to tase somebody. There you go. Please. Sir, do you have anything on you? Any weapons? Any drugs? Anything that's gonna poke? He's trying his hardest to get my gun. I wanted to get grabbing hold of it. Wouldn't let it go. Please. I need to go to the hospital. Yep. Ambulance is coming. Hospital is not going to keep you from going to jail, though. Yeah. I have two psychosis. You have what? I need to circles of care. Sorry. Roll that way. Soul you guys. Special. Yes. Metal. Okay. Work for the feds. You want to check yourself real quick? Yeah, I'm good. I'm serious. I'm serious. I'm just trying to help you guys. not by punching at me or not. With the suspect finally under control, officers did what they usually do. Checked for weapons, drugs, or anything that might be a threat. They also called for an ambulance since a taser had been used and his behavior pointed to a possible mental health issue. The mic's hard that he stole is right by his bike. He dropped it as I grabbed him off the bike. Don't move. Stay right where you're at. Stay on your side. Which one of you gentlemen was here when I was trying to retain my gun from him? both of you. Believe me, I was trying to get the taser out, but unfortunately I needed two hands on that gun. I appreciate y'all. If you wouldn't mind just standing by so I can get some information from you. Just waiting on an ambulance to get here for him. Serial number. He wants me to go to Target and see exactly what he stole. The It's the Mike's heart. And that's it. That's it. I'm just going to double check with him. He wants me to double check. Yeah. So, you want to collect that. I don't know if any of them broke when he dropped them. They did. Okay. Did you get four or? Huh? Um I believe there was all four. I haven't rolled them yet. He ripped He was ripping the probes out as it was sparking. Assault battery. Resist with retail theft. Yep. And resist without. I might be pushing it. We'll just do resist with or you fall for some beer. There's some mics hard. That That's why we fighted. That's why we tried to take my gun, too. Come on, man. What started as a petty theft escalated into a felony arrest, all over a few cans of hard lemonade. He had chances to deescalate, but kept making one bad choice after another. The chaos was over, but the consequences were just beginning. Is everyone okay? What's that? There's been a lot of crazy stuff going on in my head. Yeah, I just want to know. Do you know anything? Like is any is everyone okay? Like is just any any kind of straight answer you could give me, man? Yeah, everyone's fine. Everyone's fine. I'm the one that I don't know how much you remember what was going through your head, man. But I'm the one that you fought. I'm the one that you were munching and elbowing. And I I imagined the whole thing before, but it wasn't supposed to happen then. Yeah. Well, everyone's good, man. It was a bad choice, a bad decision. It happens. Got to move forward from make better choices though. Okay. Every step of the way I've been trying to make I have been making the best decisions that could be made. And it's Well, we'll call today a little speed bump. Okay. I don't hold no hard feelings, man. I appreciate it, sir, cuz I swear to you. I swear to God. And on everything, I was just going to run away. Okay. Yeah. I would not have hooked you. Like I said, we'll call today a little speed bump. Made a bad decision. Got to answer to that decision now and move forward. All right. The conversation that followed was surprisingly calm, almost reflective. The officer didn't sugarcoat what had happened. He kept it honest, but also non-confrontational. Hey, that second taser, though. Oh my god, that was a good one, wasn't it? Oh, man. I'll tell you, man. That's why I asked if you grew under the influence. anything because that first one you hit your swear and you ripped it right out. That don't normally happen. But I'll tell you this much too. You have the pleasure. I've been doing this job 17 years, Stephen. 17 years I've been doing this. And you, my man, are the first person I have ever used my taser on. Really? So that should tell you something right there. I'm not one to pull that thing out very often. That's crazy. Oh, that second one locked you up, man. That's 50,000 volts. I almost could stand, but I was like, "Oh, you went down and you got right back up." I was like, "That was way that's way too savage." The man was charged with retail theft, assault, resisting with violence, and attempted disarmament. It wasn't the outcome anyone expected from a shoplifting call, but when things go south, the charges tend to pile up just as fast. On April 4th, 2020, a couple with a baby had been spotted hiding merchandise in their bags before leaving. Whatever their plan was, it didn't include what to do if the police showed up. Do you have anything that's targets? Do you have anything that's targets? No, I have This is target loss prevention right here. The target. That's what I'm saying. Here, she has our son. Relax. That's your son, right? This is our son. Okay. Take off your back, bro. My backpack's already mine. Okay. Can you show us then and then make it easy? I don't need to do that. That's not Well, they have proof that you walked out with under arrest for stealing. Okay, I'm under arrest. I didn't steal. I did not steal. Babe, are you trying to arrest me? I did not do anything. You didn't even do nothing. I did not. Please. I did not. You guys will look at the I didn't do anything. Okay, relax. No, I'm not going to react to you. I stole. No, dog. I am a kid. Look at me. You're making it hard. You're making it hard cuz you just told me I was being detained and now I'm under arrest. You scared? No. No. I didn't do anything. This is anything. It was just you. It was just me. Please take her out of handcuff. Go trespass. Got ID on you. No, I don't. But I will give you my Look, take her out of handcuff, please. No, I didn't. Those are my diaper bags. Please take her out of handcuff. She did nothing. I have everything and I'm giving it back right now. This is all you guys. All of it. Look, that's all my stuff. This two. That's all you guys' stuff. That's it. I have nothing else. Is that all your guys stuff? That's all of it. Okay. What's your last name? What's your last name of men and your first name? No, cuz we have our son and she should not be in hiccups. Well, we shouldn't be stealing with your son either. That was a good comeback from the officer. Stealing while you're with your baby will definitely not earn you the parent of the year award. The man, DeAndre, claimed he did not have an ID. In most cases, people lie about not having an ID because they're hiding something. But she's not with me. Let's take a deep breath. We shouldn't be stealing her commit crimes with the baby, right? I get that. What's your first name, Mr. DeAndre? D E O N D R E. Relax, man. I'm going to do a trespass. She'll be out of handcuffs. You got my word. You're making the situation worse. That you guys got I gave it back. Simple as that. But she didn't do anything. Please take my You'll be all right. You take the handcuffs, man. Hey, DeAndre. DeAndre, do you have ID out of Washington? Huh? Do you have ID out of Washington? I don't have any ID on me. Well, I mean, where is where has your state ID been out of? I I've literally been homeless. I got kicked out of my apartment and all my stuff got left there. I wasn't able to call. Okay, but you've never had state ID? I haven't had ID in years. I mean, but what state was it out of? Out of this out of this one. Okay, I'm getting overturned. Let's go over your last name again. While the officers ran his name through their system to confirm his identity, DeAndre kept arguing with the store staff. The woman's whining in the background wasn't helping either. Every sound she made seemed to tighten his nerves. And the more he talked, the more obvious it became that he was losing control. It's ours. Like literally, I just gave you Why would I give you all your and then We just paid for all that, bro. It's mine. The zippers are broken. Everything. This is mine. I had this You did you steal this? I've had So you got to sell that, too? No, you didn't. This is my bag. Hey, DeAndre, if they go look at the video and they say that's their bag, I'm taking you to jail. Oh my god. So if this is their bag, just give them their back, man. You already you already were honest about a lot of stuff. So just give them their Why are you guys when you're in the car? Just doing a trespass. Guys, why do I have to send the car for you to do that? I don't trust you. Ma'am, I'm not going to ask you again. Have a seat in the car. I didn't even do anything. Okay, I'm not getting any return on you. I don't know what to tell you. I've literally given you my name. Why are you yelling? Because I think that's messed up. You guys got her in the back of the car. She You want to be in handcuffs, too? So, no one is holding your baby cuz you're the one that should be in handcuffs, right? I'm sorry. I get that. I get that. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Okay. The reason why you're not as handcuffs, you got a baby right there. Okay. I appreciate that. Okay. So, just stay calm. Be cal for the baby. He's going to take her in a handcuff, but you got to give me your honest name. Since the system came up empty, officers took a photo of DeAndre to try a different route. He didn't push back, but his energy shifted. He was still standing there, but it felt like he was already looking for an exit. Whatever he'd been hoping to avoid, it looked like it was finally catching up. Andrew, you got a warrant for your arrest. No, I don't. No, I don't. Okay, dude. You don't do that. Can you give your Can you give her Don't run off with it, baby. I'm not. Can you get Can you see is she going She's going to get the baby, but we got to check on your warrant. That's just how it's got to go. You know, you know that's how it's going to go. Don't run. We know who you are. I want her to go. Is she going to jail? You want me to call extra cops and go make a whole big deal? No, she's not. She's not. Just give her the baby then. Then I'll give her the baby. Give her the baby, but she can't go running off. Give her the baby. I will give her the baby. I can't go to jail. Why not? Because I got private. I can't go to jail. Give her the baby. We won't give her the baby. Okay. Give her the baby. I will. You're going to run away. DeAndre took off, leaving the baby behind without a second thought. Officers reported the suspect fleeing on foot. They had no choice but to release the mother as someone had to take care of the baby. It wasn't ideal, but the child's safety took priority over charges. Okay, here's what we're going to do. You're going to have the baby. Okay, you got my word, but let me issue a trespass. You have my word. Okay, I'll put the baby right here to make sure she's okay. Are you leaving? Yes. I'll say I can pull out. All right, I'll pull out. Hey, grab the stroller. She's pulling out. I'll just This lady's pulling out. Okay, you have my word. What are we What are we going to do with baby and mom? Trespass. Okay, trespass mom. She just watch the baby. Okay. Hi. Oh, you warm enough? There you go. We got him identified. So, anything else that's yours? Yeah, I'm just making sure. Yeah, check that. I mean, it's there's nothing in this baby bag, right? That's targets. Okay. He's right in your trespass. Okay. We're not done looking for DeAndre, though. We're going to We'll find him and if he's going to go to jail if we find him. Okay. Okay. I can't do nothing about that. That's why you guys What's that? I said I can't do nothing about that. That's between him and you guys. I just This is the only word to go. I'm going to go try to help find this dude. As the call went out, additional officers surveyed the area. One took off on foot. Another circled ahead by car. They weren't letting this one slip away. The chase didn't last long. But it ended the way most of them do with the suspect out of breath and out of options. Hey, stop. Hey, you're under arrest. Stop. We got on the way. You're going to be a Where you set for stairs? Police. Stop. You're under arrest. Stop. You're under arrest. put downstairs back toward the center. Police green tank top, you're under arrest. So stop running. Get on now. I am flat. I am the stomach. I am. I am. I am. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Okay. Okay. I'm sorry. Give me your hand, dude. I'm sorry. Why are you running away, stupid? I'm sorry. I don't have nothing in my hands. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Yeah, if you're sorry, you would have stopped. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Once the cuffs were on, DeAndre stopped resisting and started apologizing. It's a shift officers see often when the adrenaline wears off and reality sets in. However, there's nothing left to argue and not much left to fix. The damage is already done. I'm not going to be I'm not going to be any more problems. I'm sorry. Okay. I'm just withdrawing really bad. I just I'm sorry. Okay. I'm trying to stand up. Please. I'm I can stand up. I'm trying to I'm trying. I promise I won't be any more housework. Okay. One, two, three. Oh, man. I'm sorry. All right, let's go to the front of the car here. Okay. I'm sorry, DeAndre. Man, I'm sorry, man. I could have been so much better. I didn't want to go to Well, you are going to jail. I know. I'm I knew I had a warrant. You guys got to take care of that stuff. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I really am. I don't know why. Anything hiding on you anywhere? No, I don't know why I ran outside. Go back a little bit. Turns out DeAndre and his girlfriend had filed no contact orders against each other. That meant they weren't supposed to be together, no matter how things had changed since. Just being in the same place was a problem, let alone shoplifting together. I'm sorry. I don't know why I ran. I don't know why I did that. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry. All right. Well, got to take care of it, right? What's the warrant for? Uh to appear. Well, you have a couple. What? Yeah, you got you got a couple. You got a felony. I have a what? A felony warrant. What do you mean for what? Dude, just chill the out. Like, quit it. Like, quit your attitude with it. You get all like hyped up, man. Start pissing me up before. That's why I'm saying I'm sorry. Okay. Well, it is for I'm looking. You got like a few of them. I have a few felony ones. William, too. You said I have a few felony ones. I'm looking. Hold on. You got the order violation, right? So, that's what I think we're going to book you on is the order viol. You do. We were with her, right? No, I wasn't. That's what I was saying. We weren't together. I was already here and she ended up being here and I saw her. We Okay. Well, you were still together, right? No, we weren't. You guys were standing next to each other. You were arguing for us not to arrest her and you guys were because I don't want because my son deserves You guys got to figure out this whole order thing. If you don't want the order in place, you guys got to go to courts and get it dropped. I know. I like that's on YouTube. No one else can do that besides YouTube. I know. I know. I know. That's not what it's about. I promise you. I promise you we weren't together. I was just here. I saw As much as I'd love to believe you, it's You know that's not the case, right? DeAndre was charged with shoplifting, violating a court order, and obstructing justice. Stealing was one thing, but doing it with someone he was legally barred from seeing, and bringing a baby along made it worse. On October 13th, 2024, Target loss prevention observed a couple shoplifting. The suspects, Leonard Esqueebble and Raina Martinez were already well known to staff. They're coming over here. [Music] We're holding the back. Come back out. Watch that door. As the sirens got closer, Leonard and Raina abandoned their cart and tried to flee the store. But by then, officers were already waiting for them at the exits. One stepped inside just in time to spot Leonard, who turned and ran the moment he saw the uniformed cop, and from there, the chase was on. Hold on, guys. Guys, we're just waiting for those guys to come out. I got I give up. I give up. Get down. I give up. I give up. I give up. I give up. I got him. I got I give up. I give up. I give up. I said I give up. I give up. where she got. She's still inside. Sabrina. Sabrina. We still got one female outstanding. San, we still got one female out standing. Leonard was quickly cuffed and placed in the back of a patrol car, but Raina had slipped out of sight, and no one was exactly sure where she'd gone. After a few minutes of searching, one officer headed to the security office to review surveillance footage with store staff. She's somewhere in the store. Can you start backtracking from when they started running? Yeah. Yeah, let's do that. Okay. Okay, we're backtracking. Uh, standby. So they want that 248. Raina comes. Let me see her picture. I have his phone. So that's you taking picture. Okay. Raina is wearing the camel uh leggings, a crop top uh spaghetti strap shirt. What else? White shoes. And white shoes. There's Leonard detained. Good to go. Where the she go? She hasn't left. She's still in the building. I'm looking at I'm looking at all my fire doors. Dude, no one left though. I saw a Jeep on this side earlier, but I didn't know if you guys saw the Jeep. Mhm. She might be in the back room in this little corner over here. Okay. And other units. It looks like she's in the back room uh where we got Leonard. Right. I'll take you over there. The surveillance footage gave officers exactly what they needed. It narrowed down their search to a specific area. Officers headed straight to the spot. At that point, the question wasn't whether she was still inside, but where she was hiding. Hey, let me see your hands. Let me see your hands now. Let me see your hands. contact with one over here. Yes. No. Let me see your hands. I know. I'm trying to crawl out. You need to crawl out. She's crawling out now. Keep your hands out. Okay. I'm coming down. Sorry, man. She was hiding good. Oh god. God damn it. Give us one second. Look it. Master finder. Called it. Pretty good. My radio's not working. I don't know if you guys we have one. I think it's like underneath. Was she under underneath? I said that. Thank you. Of course. Thank you guys. Can you let us out? Thank you. We're good to go. Do you have anything in your bra or anything? No, I don't. I don't have nothing on me. She tucked herself in well, but it didn't take long for the officers to find her. Hiding among the merchandise only bought her a few minutes, but not much more. At that point, there was nothing left to do but to calmly escort her toward the exit. Spread your feet apart. You have anything in your shoes? No. Hope your pass. Okay. There it is. According to the store receipt, the items in the abandoned cart totaled $271. Leonard and Raina were charged with shoplifting, resisting, and obstructing or evading a police officer. On top of that, Leonard had 11 active warrants, and Raina had five of her own. On August 9th, 2023, officers were dispatched to a Target store after reports that Thelma Grant, a woman with 32 prior incidents, had returned and was allegedly trying to steal again. With a track record like that, staff had little doubt about her intentions. This is the footage of what happened next. Hey guys, what's up? Got a lady. She think switching stuff. She's she ticket switches like um she ticket switches using stock barcodes usually a little bit um based on like 2400 and up. We have a name for her. I'm not sure if it's 100% accurate, but we have her as Thelma Grant. Thelma Grant. Yes, that's old. Yeah, she's old lady. I don't feel bad for her, though. She's She knows what she's doing. Like she's been doing this for a while. Like just to give you some signs. $2,400 in theft. How many? 32 incences. Yeah. So, she's been doing this for a while. So, usually what she does is she grabs like little stock bar codes that are like a dollar, a little bit less. She'll put that on whatever else she's buying. And then she'll actually go through the checkout line. She'll scan the socks. Yeah. She scans the socks like 50 times. Yeah. So, while she's scanning, can you pull up like what all we can? She's been doing this for so long that we have all these different incidents on her. Yeah, she's been in here a while already. Um, she's been in here for I can't lunch. She's been in here for like 30 minutes. I'm expecting her to head to the front seat. Is she a nurse? Really? I have no idea. At this point, store security had seen enough. They tracked her for nearly half an hour and watched her swapping barcodes in real time through the surveillance cameras. However, if they wanted to be able to charge her with theft, they had to wait for her to pay using switched barcodes and leave the store. Oh, no. No. We'll get her um once she pays at the POS and when she exits. We have to like target makes us let them leave. That way it shows like there's no possible way they could have intended to properly pay. Like that's why they call it the last point of sale. like there's no way that she could have paid properly. I just need her to get out of the big room at this point. And like I showed them, I've got 30 plus incidents of her switching barcodes. So, I know you guys technically could pull her for defacing the merchandise, but we don't want to do that cuz it's just Target won't let us do that. But my boss did give us permission like if she for some reason like sees the cop car or something, she abandons it, we will we can pursue trespass. All right. So, Oh, yeah. She's taking We're good. So, see that? Look at that's a big black bowl that she scanned. That's a small white little cup that she scanned. So, we're good. Let's just wait till she passed off. Once we have Can you guys tell the difference? So, you see that's a big black bowl and this is like a small white cup. Thelma scanned her items using swapped barcodes. When her payment card didn't go through, she stayed at the register for nearly 20 minutes trying to pay. At that point, it didn't matter if she paid or not. Hey, ma'am. Drop your phone for me. Uhhuh. Drop your phone for me. Yes. You're under arrest right now. Okay. Place your hands place your hands behind your back. We'll tell you as soon as you're uncuffed. What I did? We'll tell you as soon as you're cuffed. What did I do? What's Are you just Let me get some handcuffs on you and then um we'll bring you back and we'll explain everything. Yeah. Sorry. What did I do, sir? Well, I'll let you know. Just let me get these cuffs on you real quick. Don't want to mess up your watch. Mhm. What in the hell did I do? We'll explain. Just give us a second. She kept asking what she'd done, but the officers weren't in a rush to argue. They wanted the loss prevention to be the one to give her all the details as they have the surveillance footage. After all, this wasn't a one-time incident. It was a pattern that they've been aware of for a while. Would you like me to grab your cell phone for you? Yes. What did I do, ma'am? So, let's explain it in the office. Okay. You want to move it over there? Did you want me to disconnect the call? Yes. What did I do? I'll take your purse, miss. Okay. So, the loss prevention officer is going to explain everything to you. Yes. Um, we're just going to sit down, have a conversation, and he'll explain everything. Right. Cuz I didn't do I mean for y'all to come up and just handcuff me like that in front of everyone and I didn't do anything back here. How you all going to handcuff me? Have a seat over here on the the bench for me. Yes. That's good. You can sit there or there either way. Yeah. I don't want to sit down. Have a seat. I don't want to sit down, sir. This hurt me. My arm. So switching switching the barcodes. Switching the barcodes of an item is a crime. I didn't switch no barcode. Be on camera. And we have What did you do? Sir, you didn't see me switching nothing. I didn't switch no barcode anywhere. Yes, ma'am. Sir, show me, please. I have I have it right here. They They've seen it. They sir. No. Uh-uh. You You need to show me. Show me. What did I do? You don't need to show. Okay. Show me. What did I do? Did you switch the barcodes of the items that you rang? Sir, I promise you I didn't switch no barcode. I We haven't Sir, I didn't switch no barcode. What's your name? I didn't switch no barcode. Okay. Thelma insisted she hadn't switched anything. She asked for proof and claimed it was all just a misunderstanding. But the longer she spoke, the more her lies became obvious. Officers didn't press further. Usually with loud defensive suspects, the truth usually unravels on its own. You got ID in here, man. No, my my um ID and everything is in the car. What's your name? And and then for you to go, you you're not supposed to just search my um items. Well, you're arrested right now, ma'am. Yes. But what I'm saying is arrested for what? Shoplifting. Shoplifting. Please sit down. Sir, show me proof that I shoplifted anything. We just told you, sir. I didn't. No, I did not. No, I did not. Okay. Have a seat for me. That Oh, no. Uh-uh. Um, only thing I did, I went and I bought what I had. I was trying to get my money off the chime the whole time. What's your name? I'm not giving that information unless y'all tell me some stuff. We did. No, no, y'all did not. The first thing y'all did was handcuff me. You're under arrest for shopping. How you under arrest? First of all, sir, look here. First of all, I didn't leave out the store with anything. And I didn't change no I didn't change no prices on anything. The only thing I did was scan what I had. When you were scanning things, they were it was coming up as a white plastic cup. Listen, I stand what I have. You're not going to sit up here and tell me that I shot this at anything. Okay? I stand the stuff that I had. That's something that if you wish to fight it in court, you can fight it in court. Oh, I'm definitely going to fight this in court. Okay. I'm definitely going to fight this in court now. Switch the barcode. Sir, I switched the barcode. First of all, I didn't switch any barcodes on anything. And I'm going to sue Target. Oh, heck no. Uh-uh. No. No. No. I'm going to I'm going to sue you all. I'm going to sue you all because this is not fair. This is not right. Nope. Okay. And then to have the police to come and handcuff me at the register around everybody. Okay. Oh, heck no. Uh-uh. All right. Didn't even Didn't even bring me back here. Didn't even bring me back here. You're going to come up there and handcuff me in front of everybody. Okay, ma'am. Oh, I'm definitely going to get me a lawyer. Sounds like I'm not talking to you because I didn't because you didn't do anything to me. Okay. You didn't or you stood back. You're the reason why we're here. Listen, it doesn't matter, brother. He's the reason. I'm talking about what you all did. As the conversation continued, she grew more defensive. Instead of addressing the accusations, she focused on how she was treated. It was a familiar tactic. Shift the narrative, stall for time, and hope the cops would give up their investigation. But that tactic never works. Kenny just bam me out the store. Was doing that, too. I know that. But can he let me go? That's up to them. But I don't think they are. Sir, that's that's all I'm asking. Sir, we can't. Please, sir. Please. Cuz this is going to be on me and I'm going to lose my job. I break at the hospital and date surgery. Please. I Please, sir. He's got to keep his job, too. I I understand that, but this judge, it's their call. Please, sir. I won't step back in here. No way around it. Please, sir. I'll lose my job if this is only it. Please, it took me so long to get this job. Please, sir. I'm just begging you. Please, just one. Just please. Just can Can I just pay for the stuff and you please, sir? I can't. Unfortunately, we have 30 previous incidents of you doing this from here. I do, sir. No, you Sir, I've never been Oh my god. You've never been to this store before? Is that what you're saying? I always shop in here. I live right down the street. Okay, sir. You have never caught me in no shoplifting or anything like that in here. I Oh my god. I can't believe this. I No. No, you did not. Uh-uh. Sir, what how much is the items? Oh my. I didn't Sir, I didn't even leave out the door. Yes, ma'am. I didn't leave the I didn't leave out the door. I understand. I didn't leave out the door. I didn't pay for anything or anything. It's 5926. Is that a misdemeanor or felony? It's a misdemean. What started as outrage moved to negotiation and ended in quiet pleading. She offered alternatives, a trespass warning, an immediate payment, a ban, anything to avoid the charges. But that window had already closed and nothing she said was going to open it. And I'll go ahead and show you everybody that needed to signed off on it. So there's your name, your signature, the property manager name and signature, and that is my name and my signature. Okay, that's fine. All right. And it wasn't indefinite. Yes, ma'am. It is permanently. That's kind of harsh, isn't it? I didn't I didn't decide that, sir. Isn't that kind of harsh? What? Indefinite. It's not my choice. It's what it's target procedure. You cons? Yes, ma'am. M. So, this is a copy of the arrest report. Yes, sir. You're going to create a copy of this and then there's going to be a case report number on here that you could pull from our system. Yes, sir. Oh, thank you so much. You got it. Yes. Thelma Grant was charged with theft, but only for that day's incident. Her earlier offenses couldn't be pursued. Either the evidence wasn't there or the statute of limitations had passed. She was also issued a lifetime ban from all Target stores. Some shoplifterss rely on experience, others on sheer boldness. But neither stands a chance when the evidence is clear. In one way or another, once the cops step in, even the most entitled shoplifterss end up humbled.
